We're still basking in the glow of Burning Man 2012, and we suspect you are too. Of course "basking in the glow" is code for "neck-deep in the playa dust that's still all over our stuff".
There's been a steady stream of articles and photo galleries coming across our radar these last couple weeks, each carrying a reminder of what we do and why we do it. Long story short: you people are amazing. And we're especially glad to see so many incredible photographers, videographers, thinkers and writers giving their gift of documenting this hard-to-describe experience.

WHAT WAS THE SANSKRIT MESSAGE ON THE ARTIST WRISTBANDS?
Some folks asked, and we thought you'd enjoy the answer. Kristy, our Gate crew manager, tells us how they chose the Sanskrit quote printed on the wristbands for artists arriving early:
"In the spirit of Fertility 2.0, we chose this text and language because they embody themes of creation and and basic elements of human life. The text is Article 1 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/index.shtml). We chose a Sanskrit translation as it is one of the oldest human languages and is a foundation for many modern languages. And hopefully this mystery encouraged a little extra Communal Effort and Participation among those who wanted to figure out the meaning. Thanks to all of you who were curious!

"FPV is 'first person view' flying of a radio controlled aircraft using a video image from the plane transmitted wirelessly to a viewing station on the ground, using video goggles in my case. This allows safe operation of a small, quiet, electric airplane while taking high-definition video while piloting the plane as if one were sitting in the cockpit. I flew at about 50kph (30mph) at an altitude of of 30m (100ft) over the playa and the city to obtain video for this production, then landed safely right on the inner playa."

Your Burning Man year-round volunteer SF Community Events Team is planning the 13th Annual SF Decompression Heat The Street FaIRE! for 10/07/12 on Indiana Street starting Noon. We are scheduling stages and placing art and camps NOW. Don't delay!!!
Got big art? A mutant vehicle? Interactive theme camp? Performance, crafting workshop, kids event, performance art thingy, puppet show, dance troupe, parade, lecture? Bring it on! Or maybe you can loan and help run a live performer sound system, stage, lighting/other infrastructure? Or you have an opinion about what you'd like to see more of at Decom?
To contribute a sampling of your favorite playa photo/video imagery, also email us and we'll share your best photos on the screens at various stages.

"The Temple Guardians have been watching over the Temples of Burning Man since 2002, but until now we have never had an archive of our history as a group. It is our intention to capture history of the Temple Guardians in a way that allows us to share our story with everyone. To this end, we are looking for playa artifacts from the last ten years of the Temple. We specifically would like to have photos of Guardians at the Temple, group photos, art from our bandanas, examples of our traditional bells, and stories from or about Guardians at the Temple. Wow, after one of the most challenging years in Burning Man's history, our community truly stepped up to make Burning Man 2012 one of the best events ever. Despite all of the challenges, dust, smoke, rain, lightning and more, it all went off without a hitch!
There were more incredible art installations, mutant vehicles and theme camps than ever, and the (peak) population of 52,300 clearly cranked their dials up to 11 to manifest one magical Burn week! A host of first-timers joined in, many of whom quickly became productive contributors to our community. We can't wait to see what they do next year!
We're especially pleased to report that traffic in and out of the city (one of our biggest concerns) was a TOTAL NON-ISSUE. Wait times getting into BRC were lower than we've seen in YEARS (like 3 hours at the peak), and Exodus waits were nearly non-existent -- the delays experienced by most were due to terrible road conditions rather than the volume of Burners coming or going. And we owe it all to YOU for planning ahead, and to some exceptional planning and on-site work by the Gate crew (thank you Gate!).
Despite worries of a dustpocalypse, Mother Nature blessed us with relatively light winds and moderate temperatures throughout the week, but she let us know who's boss with a bit of rain and lightning (eep!) on Thursday, and a solid windstorm on Friday. She saw fit to let us Burn in peace for Saturday's (epic) Man burn, and Sunday's (truly spectacular) Temple burn.
Now that you've returned to your (other) home, we've got a full Burning Man 2012 wrap-up to warm your cockles, including media coverage, oodles of photo galleries, post-playa tips, opportunities for getting us your feedback and more. Wow, after one of the most challenging years in Burning Man's history, our community truly stepped up to make Burning Man 2012 one of the best events ever. Despite all of the challenges, dust, smoke, rain, lightning and more, it all went off without a hitch!
There were more incredible art installations, mutant vehicles and theme camps than ever, and the (peak) population of 52,300 clearly cranked their dials up to 11 to manifest one magical Burn week! A host of first-timers joined in, many of whom quickly became productive contributors to our community. We can't wait to see what they do next year!
We're especially pleased to report that traffic in and out of the city (one of our biggest concerns) was a TOTAL NON-ISSUE. Wait times getting into BRC were lower than we've seen in YEARS (like 3 hours at the peak), and Exodus waits were nearly non-existent -- the delays experienced by most were due to terrible road conditions rather than the volume of Burners coming or going. And we owe it all to YOU for planning ahead, and to some exceptional planning and on-site work by the Gate crew (thank you Gate!).
Despite worries of a dustpocalypse, Mother Nature blessed us with relatively light winds and moderate temperatures throughout the week, but she let us know who's boss with a bit of rain and lightning (eep!) on Thursday, and a solid windstorm on Friday. She saw fit to let us Burn in peace for Saturday's (epic) Man burn, and Sunday's (truly spectacular) Temple burn.
Now that you've returned to your (other) home, we've got a full Burning Man 2012 wrap-up to warm your cockles, including media coverage, oodles of photo galleries, post-playa tips, opportunities for getting us your feedback and more. Here's a big thank you to everybody who supported Burning Man projects this year ... whether it was a financial contribution, a donation, or volunteering your time and talents, the fruits of your generosity sure did show on playa! We saw more art projects in Black Rock City than ever before (over 375 installations!), including more fire art than ever (93 pieces!), and 550 incredible mutant vehicles.
While it does seem during the thick of the fundraising season that we're getting inundated by requests for support, the end result is that more people have the opportunity to contribute to these projects, making them truly community-generated creations. So thank you!

Burning Man Presents for the benefit of the Burning Man Project...
DECOMPRESSION 2012 Heat the Street FaIRE!
Near 19th St. & Minnesota St., SF (public entrance TBA)
Come at noon SHARP for a full twelve hours of art, performance, fire, dance, theme camps, circus arts, live music, DJs, Burning Man 2012 imagery, and MORE!!! All six blocks, the park, and stages will be overflowing with a stunning variety of creative expression! Bring your imagination to share and BE the art you wish to see in the world!!!
