ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Greetings Burners everywhere and welcome to this edition of the Jackrabbit Speaks. We've got fun news (art!) and serious news (laser safety!) and touching news (temples!). Because, y'know, we like to keep it interesting.
Before we jump into it, a gentle reminder that the Low Income Ticket Program is about to close up shop, as we're really close to receiving the maximum number of applications. Get yours in fast if you want a shot at one!
We're very excited to announce this year's honoraria artists — take a gander at the list below, and we'll tickle your eyeballs with pictures and project descriptions soon enough.
And as it's that time of year, art project fundraisers are starting to roll in, and we're collecting them on our Support a Project page, and highlighting selected ones below. Check 'em out, support 'em if you can.

There’s a Black Dot in the Middle of Everything I See
|
 |
| |
At last year's event, one of our Black Rock Rangers, Ranger Halston, was rendered almost totally blind by lasers shined into her eyes by participants during the Man Burn. Because of the irresponsible actions of Burners with lasers, Kelli's life has been permanently altered. You can read more about the story on Voices of Burning Man.
Kelli is raising funds to cover the lost wages and medical bills she’s accumulated since the injury, carrying her over until (and hopefully beyond) her Workers’ Comp claim gets processed by Burning Man’s insurance company. Please join with us as we help her, if you can.
The Burning Man organization is considering various changes to the laser policy for 2015 and beyond. Regardless of the eventual policy decision, don’t use handheld lasers in crowds, don’t ever aim them at people, and make sure nobody around you does either. And don’t bring them to Burning Man ever again — it’s just not worth the risk to the livelihood of another human being.

The Temple of Promise
The 2015 Temple has been revealed. For four years in a row, the temples of Black Rock City have been palatial, romantic, classical in design. Time’s up. This year's Temple crew have brought fluid, organic inspiration to this year’s design: the Temple of Promise.

Primal Screaming over Burning Man (and the war of cultural appropriation)
Caveat writes:
"One gets the impression that many Burners thought that when Burning Man got big enough for the forces of liberal consumer capitalism to notice it, that those forces would just roll over and plead for Larry Harvey to rub their belly. Or that the New York Stock Exchange would hang the 10 Principles on the wall and replace the opening bell with dub-step.
That was never going to happen. Burning Man’s entry into the world as a genuinely large scale movement was always going to be a complicated, messy, clash of ideas."

Corpus Christi BWB Beach Clean-Up Nets 8,000 Pounds of MOOP
Jon Mitchell writes:
"Parsec and Corpus Christi BWB have made local headlines recently for their work cleaning up 'The Bowl,' a stretch of beach in the Corpus Christi area that would make a great place for a burn if it hadn’t been totally trashed and neglected. Shotgun shells, furniture, parking blocks, MOOP city.
But Corpus Christi BWB rounded up a bunch of volunteers and started cleaning the place up last year. 'It’s been well over 8,000 pounds of trash,' Parsec told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. 'We removed four trailer loads and a 15-foot dumpster, and it’s still a mess and still continues.'"

Envision, Burning Man, and Beyond: One Worldwide Movement?
Burning Man's Communications Director Megan Miller writes:
"As the sun rose on the last morning of Envision, I looked out over the joyous crowd and the gravity of the work we all are doing suddenly washed over me. The impact we are making collectively on thousands, arguably millions of lives. They are waking up. They are reaching out. They are connecting the dots and encouraging each other to dig deeper, reach further, and become more than they thought possible. We are all helping to build what might become a truly global cultural movement."

Virgin Letters Project
Dakota writes:
"Virgin Letters are a way to share the magic of the first Burn with another virgin in the midst of experiencing what can be an overwhelming transition. You will likely never know who received your letter and unless you identify yourself they will never know you, inviting a soul bearing honesty about your first experience to give theirs a little framework and perspective in what may be for them a bewildering new paradigm."
