GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Hey you! If you're looking to make art for Burning Man 2016, and want some dollar-shaped assistance, our 2016 BRC Honorarium Art Grant process is open for business. Letters of Intent are due November 30, so jump on it.

Next up ...

Burning Man is hiring! We're getting some key people into some key positions that'll help us sail this crazy-ass ship beyond the horizon into our future — and we're looking for some more crew members.

So if you want to get in the game, we've just opened up three opportunities: specifically, a People Lifecycle Manager, an Organizational Performance Manager, and an Administrative Associate, People and Operations. Does that confuse you? (That's OK, it confused us at first too.) See the specifics below.

Oh and guess what?

The Man burns in 288 days.

The First Children's Book About Burning Man is Now Available

This is great! Peter writes:

"After a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of Burning Man - The World's Biggest Playground, the first children's book about Burning Man is now available.

It can be found in select bookstores and online at: www.worldsbiggestplayground.com.

For the last three years I have been making personal books after each Burn for my daughter Veronica (who is now 4) since she was not with us. It was that effort that evolved into this book for children everywhere.

I have worked with the approval of the Burning Man organization to produce a book that honestly reveals what Burning Man is in a format that will be acceptable and enlightening to children and adults alike. The book is full of colorful and engaging photographs that tell the story of what Burning Man is in a tasteful manner that nobody could find offensive, whether they are a Burner or not.

This first edition of the book is a beautifully bound hardcover with 56 pages of my color photographs. The book is 8 1/2 X 8 1/2 inches square and is as durable and lovable as any book on a child's bookshelf. The perfect size for both little hands and yours!

Go to www.worldsbiggestplayground.com for more information."

A New Team for Preserving Burning Man’s Volunteer-Driven Culture

Jackrabbit Jon Mitchell sat down with Burning Man co-founder Harley K. DuBois to talk about a new team dedicated to supporting our amazing volunteers.

"Volunteerism was never hardwired into the organization itself, because the spirit of it was so innate to the founders that we all had our own ways of doing it. Now that we’re reorganizing, we can hardwire in volunteerism. This new team is our first effort to do that."

Q&A with Harley K. Dubois from Burning Man

From DANISH:

"DANISH™: What is the primary strength of temporary communities, like the one at Burning Man?

Harley K. Dubois: The strength is that you can experiment and do something that might fail, trying it on for size. The temporary nature gives you the opportunity not to have the pressure to create something immediately perfect. If you start temporary, you can always move to permanent.

You can test anything; you have more minds to draw on when co-creating, so developing a better solution to whatever the problem might be.

In temporary communities, you simply find better answers to questions and have the freedom to try without pressure."

Can Burning Man Balance the “Art” and “History” in “Art History?” Should It Have To?

For the second post in the da Vinci's Workshop blog series, Caveat takes on the question of the artist's responsibility for accuracy:

"My very strong take is that the complexities inherent in this topic – and for that matter in any topic that isn’t bland and anodyne – are a strength, not a problem: to the extent that Florence was a democracy more in name than in practice, to the extent the rich were subverting art as well as developing it, to the extent that Florence was as much a fucked up cauldron of intrigue as a shining beacon for the future … does that detract or add to its urgent relevance for our own time?"

Craft the Bells for the Bell Towers at the 2016 Man Base

Kimba writes:

"Calling all artisans! Burning Man is looking to contract someone, a small company or an artist collaborative to create bells for the four bell towers within the Man Pavilion at the 2016 event in Black Rock City. The bells will ring hourly during the event, should provide a harmonious call to your fellow citizen, and can be as loud as you want (without amplification). We love the idea of the bells being made from upcycled materials. Many details still to be worked out; we’re looking forward to working with you and hearing your ideas.

RFP in process for interested and qualified parties. Let us know you’re interested no later than 11/30/15 by sending an email to kimba@burningman.org Please share."

Sculpt the Sculpture at the 2016 Man Base

Kimba also writes:

"Call out for sculptural artists. Burning Man seeks to contract someone, a small company or an artist collaborative to create one of two slightly-larger-than-life-scaled sculptures to be included in the Man Pavilion at the 2016 Burning Man event in Black Rock City. The sculptures are to be installed on a provided plinth, roughly 5’ wide x 9’ deep and raised about 9’ off the playa. (1.524m x 2.743m x 2.743m).

RFP ready for interested and qualified parties. Send 'em my way: kimba@burningman.org Please share."

Thank You for Supporting Art in Black Rock City!

Here's a big thank you to everybody who supported Burning Man projects this year ... whether it was a financial contribution, a donation, or volunteering your time and talents, the fruits of your generosity sure did show on playa! We saw more art projects in Black Rock City than ever before (over 400 installations!), including more fire art than ever (over 100 pieces!), and 650 incredible mutant vehicles.

While it does seem during the thick of the fundraising season that we're getting inundated by requests for support, the end result is that more people have the opportunity to contribute to these projects, making them truly community-generated creations. So thank you!
