Fair warning: we're going to be HAMMERING you with super important, information-packed JRSs throughout July and August that will help prepare you for your excursion to the desert this year. So right now's your time to enjoy a little downtime, cuz it's a comin'! (First-timers, y'all should especially pay attention, but this stuff's equally important for everybody.)

Tickets are going out in the mail as we speak, and that process will continue through the middle of July, so if you haven't received yours yet (or a confirmation email that they've been sent), hang tight. Still need tickets? We've got another sale coming up in August. Details here: http://tickets.burningman.com.

We'll keep this one short, cuz they're gonna start getting loooong soon.

The Man burns in 64 days! Whoa.

BRUNO'S PRICE TAG GOES DOWN

Iiiinteresting ... Tom Corty writes:

"Great newsletter! I am the broker who is selling Bruno's Country Club & Motel. Just a note of interest that the Price for Bruno's Country Club & Motel is now $650,000 and he will help finance the sale to a qualified buyer. I hope this you can inform your readers of this as one of them may be interested. Nobody can replace Bruno but there is a time and place for everything.

Thank you, Tom Corty."

AUSTIN'S BURNING FLIPSIDE TAKES LEAVE NO TRACE TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

Burning Flipside is the official Austin TX Burning Man regional event -- it's also the oldest and largest Burning Man regional event. Event organizers faced a challenge when they were asked to compromise the community's core principles in order to increase their population cap. Unwilling to let that happen, they worked with government officials to rewrite the rules.

Here's the Hun's coverage in the Burning Blog:

HOW [FREESPACE] CHALLENGES BURNING MAN'S EMERGENT PRINCIPLES

"[freespace] sounds like that Burner's Dream come to life, right? Naturally, Burning Man got involved. But what does that even mean? Who is this 'Burning Man?' Is it the Burning Man organization? Is it the fledgling non-profit Burning Man Project? Is it Burning Man participants acting of their own accord?

Yes."

WRITERS OF BURNING MAN, UNITE!

"Does Burning Man have a literary culture, at all? The answer is no. But by this time next year – thanks to a new community effort – the answer might be 'Yes.'

A pair of Burners named 'What' (Courtney Sherwood) and 'Wonton' (Wendi Anderson) have, in the best tradition of a do-ocracy, taken this aspect of our culture into their own hands: and they want you to join them."

Caveat Magister in the Burning Blog: http://bit.ly/14b0c18

BURNING MAN FEATURED IN "THE BLOOM" VIDEO DOC SERIES

Burning Man is featured in Episode #2 of The Bloom, a video documentary series exploring transofrmation festivals. From their site:

"The Bloom's second episode examines how Transformational Festivals have become opportunities for 'Practicing The New World' through the paradigm shift of producing reality through CO-CREATION, utilizing an ethos of PARTICIPATION which results in immensely rich environments that take the festival beyond commercial entertainment and into the realm of meaningful community experience and ritual, and MODELLING, the many ways that participants are taking their transformational experiences back into their communities and their everyday lives."

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VOLUNTEERING AT BURNING MAN

This is a long-ass read, but well worth it (and highly entertaining, if we do say so) if you're considering volunteering at Burning Man this year, or ever, really. Caveat kills it, as he gives you the inside scoop on volunteering at Burning Man.

ASANA: CUSTOM SOFTWARE FOR STRESS-FREE PLAYA PREPARATION

The good folks at The Chillage write:

"Asana helps companies plan and organize complex projects, and we've made a custom version JUST FOR BURNING MAN. The Chillage has been using it for years, and it's been invaluable, and now it's our gift to you ♥

CALLING SENIOR BURNERS

Love this ... get on it, people! Chuckee writes:

"I am attending Burning Man for the second time with my son. I am trying to round up all us senior Burners for some sort of group event at the Burn. Want to join me? Help plan and implement ... chuckee@voicenet.com"

STRING QUARTET SEEKS VIOLINIST, VIOLIST, CELLIST

Christina writes:

"For the last four years I have been out and about on the playa with my violin serenading art pieces and the humans who visit them. This year I would like to perform string chamber music of any size (two, three, four, more). My tastes range from Haydn up to present day. I am seeking partners in co-creation to make poly something-or-the-other. If you have an instrument with a g string, a ken toward exhibitionism, and penchant for Mr. Immortal Beloved, email me at Christina@boundlesscuriosity.com."

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

MASTERS OF GAMES NEEDED FOR SUPER STREET FIRE

This was out there last year, and it's truly Super Rad. Ben Mossbarger writes:

"Super Street Fire (SSF) is an interactive fire art installation in which two players shadowbox while wearing gesture recognizing gloves, sending waves of fire back and forth at each other across a giant ring of flame effects. The ring is designed as a recreation of Ryu's stage from the classic Street Fighter II video game. I'm looking for individuals with plenty of emcee/improv experience to run a couple of shifts on stage as our Masters of Games.

The Masters of Games run the show at SSF. Their job is to provide commentary on the matches to excite and engage the audience, to provide stage banter between rounds/matches, and to generally be the locus of the audience's attention when they're not distracted by the fury of 32 flame effects. There will be online tutorials available before the event.

This will be some of the most fun you've ever had on stage. With a simple gesture or sweep of your finger you set off giant spouts of flame with the audience cheering as you go. The sweat beading down your forehead and the flames licking at your knuckles are a small price for the exhilaration you'll feel.

email benjamin.mossbarger@gmail.com with your name, contact information, on-playa availability, and a description of your stage experience."

COME FLY WITH THE RED SPARROWS PRECISION AEROBATICS TEAM

This is pretty freakin' great. Wizzard is the best. (Personal note: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR UPCOMING PLAYA WEDDING!) Wizzard writes:

"We are looking for other 'pilots' to join our team.
- build a wearable WWI biplane (of your own design)
- perform airshow routines
- dogfight others in combat
- attack the aircraft carrier
- if you're not a pilot, or don't feel you can build a plane, we also need clouds and people to move them

HOW TO TOW A TRAILER AND NOT DIE

While this isn't TECHNICALLY a civics issue, it kinda is, really, since SO MANY OF YOU PEOPLE HAUL TRAILERS TO THE PLAYA AND BACK. And? It would seriously suck if you died.

Properly loading, maintaining and towing a trailer is as serious business as it is tricky. Do it wrong, and you end up overturned in a ditch. Are we making you nervous? Good.

Here's a great website we came across (well, we Googled it, actually) that tells you everything you need to know. Hauling a trailer? Please read it:

Hi everybody! Hope this finds you well. You'll notice these JRSs are getting longer and longer as we get closer to the event, and the trend's only going to continue, so we'll keep this part short and sweet.

So hey! We're starting to send out your Burning Man tickets now ... so if you bought tickets from us and opted to have them mailed to you, watch your inbox for a shipping notification email! The fulfillment process will run through mid-July, so hang tight.

Included in that ticket package will be the oh-so-pretty Burning Man 2013 Survival Guide for your (MANDATORY) reading pleasure. But if you just can't wait, here's the (mobile friendly!) online version:

http://survival.burningman.com

We are getting VERY excited for the playa! Do you want to get excited? Do ya? Here, this'll help ... it's the (kinda mind-blowing) list of art projects scheduled to be displayed in Black Rock City this year:

One could say it's spiffy! Oh, and MANDATORY READING FOR EVERY BURNING MAN PARTICIPANT. Ahem.

Oh and also, if you're picking up tickets at Will Call, you'll receive a printed Survival Guide ... but in the meantime, DEFINITELY read the online version so you can properly prepare yourself for the playa.

TELL BRC ABOUT YOUR FUN PLAYA EVENT! GET IT IN THE PLAYA EVENTS CALENDAR AND WHATWHEREWHEN!

It's that time of year when all those playa plans are starting to take shape and gain momentum. Let the citizens of Black Rock City know about your event by submitting it for publication in the printed WhatWhereWhen guide that is distributed at Greeters. Events listed in the WhatWhereWhen come from submissions to the online Playa Events Calendar. The Playa Events Calendar opens Friday, June 14th at 12pm (noon). The printed guide has limited space, so only the first 1550 events can be considered for publication. After the 1550 submissions, the online version continues to accept events right up through the event. Submissions for the printed guide are limited to 140 characters. (Here's a tip for making the most of those 140 characters - don't repeat the name of your event in the description.) To list your event, go to http://playaevents.burningman.com

ART AND WHIMSY ARE RENEWABLE RESOURCES

Caveat Magister on the Burning Blog:

"Burning Man became a San Francisco Cacophony Society event early in its history, turned into the definitive Cacophony event in the mid-90s, and soon a small army of whimsical geniuses who otherwise would be setting up rappel lines between corporate rooftops were working on art cars, theme camps, and port-a-pottie logistics for the annual trip to the desert."

The result was a pretty amazing list ...."

LARRY HARVEY AT THE LEWEB CONFERENCE

Burning Man Co-Founder Larry Harvey was invited to speak at the LeWeb conference in London on the topic of the Sharing Economy. While he was there, he had the opportunity to interview with a few different news outlets, and each conversation bubbled up interesting ideas and thoughts about Burning Man as a gift economy, the tech culture's relationship to Burning Man, and what that all means in terms of societal potential. We've collected them for you here:

EVENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - LOCAL SHUTTLE BUS CREW TAKING SIGN-UPS NOW!

Human Jones writes:

"The crew of Local Shuttle Bus between Black Rock City and the towns of Gerlach and Empire is looking for a few additional volunteers to expand their ranks and work the ticket booth near Center Camp.

If interested, you can start the process here:
http://profiles.burningman.com/participate/volunteer/

Background:
Volunteering at Burning Man is a great way to become more connected to the event, and honestly, few roles on the playa have as low a requirement as the Local Bus Shuttle crew: usually just one or two 2 hr shifts between Wednesday and Saturday. How easy is that?! The depot hours are 9 am to 4 pm Wednesday-Friday, and 10am to 2pm Saturday.

Bonus: Along with the opportunity to participate, there is limited camping space available for volunteers on a first-come, first served basis at the Center Camp Local Shuttle staff camp.

Volunteering FAQs:
http://www.burningman.com/participate/volunteer_faq.html

So keep the gifting spirit alive and thriving, and work alongside some great people.

"TELL US SOMETHING CAMP" WELCOMES STORYTELLERS

Marc writes:

"Tell Us Something Camp, inspired by the Moth, is an open forum for telling, archiving, and sharing true stories. Stories are 10 minutes, must be personal, and told from memory. It is a celebration of storytelling, of Black Rock City, and of each other. We listen, we laugh, we cry, and we do it with stories. Our theme this year is 'What are you waiting for?' Want to tell a story? Call 406.203.4683 to pitch your idea. Stories are told without notes and last for 10 minutes. The event takes place Wednesday evening at Tell Us Something Camp. Updates as to camp placement and time of the event will be posted at the website: http://www.tellussomething.org/burning-man/ "

PLAY)A(SKOOL SEEKS SPEAKERS FOR TEDX BRC

"At Play)A(Skool, we believe that the sharing of knowledge, experiences and ideas help us evolve individually and collectively. This forms the basis for what we give BACK to the Black Rock City community year over year. We invite you to PARTICIPATE by providing a class or experience.

This year our theme is 'Paradigm Shift.' What do you have to share that is groundbreaking, thought-provoking, interesting, funny and most importantly IDEA SHIFTING?

Our class format is very simple --- you, a dome and a bunch of people interesting in what you have to say or do. Anything from the abstract and esoteric to the very practical and concrete --- we want to provide a platform for you to GIVE BACK to the community. Our class formats are 30 minutes and 60 minutes so please prepare accordingly.

In 2013, Play)A(Skool has joined forces with several other camps including IDEATE, each dedicated to the new 'Learning Center' on the playa where we will host your classes and experiences in an indoor dome where you are the Guide. If you have an 'Idea in Action' that you would like to SHARE, please complete the following form by MIDNIGHT (PST), June 23, 2013 for consideration: http://bit.ly/11xKnRJ"

NO TREE KIPUKA. CROWD-WRITTEN SHORT STORY COLLECTION ABOUT BURNING MAN

Aramis (we're crushing on this playa name) writes:

"I'm putting together a crowd-written collection of stories about Burning Man. It's called No Tree Kipuka, a title that is explained in the attached short story, A Burst of Entropy Blared Forth, which is my contribution to the volume. I'm asking all Burners with a creative fire to submit their written stories for consideration.

(be sure to download the Word file to view it b/c I've done some funky formating that only shows up in Word)"

PARTICIPATE IN THE CITY LIGHTS PROJECT FROM THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME

We LOVE this kind of thing ... see a need? Create a solution! And crowdsource it! Gary writes:

"City Lights Project is about bringing more participation to the artistic crew of Burning Man. If you don't have the time or inclination to join a large Art Installation, check out the City Lights Project. We enroll you the average Josephine and Joe to build illuminate sculptures to be hung on the dark streets of the camping area of Burning Man; Black Rock City. Black Rock City has over 200 utilitarian street signs to identify the roads and pedestrian walkways. The street signs are useful in navigating the city, but not being lit, a bit hard to see at night.

How to Participate:
City Lights Project installs solar-powered light sculptures on street signs around Black Rock City. You can join the project by building those lights sculptures for us. The project will provide you with a basic solar light fixture and metal stand to attach to the street sign. You can then create a light sculptures out of your own materials. You can add the Solar Lights to an object you find or build new sculpture with materials you choose. We recommend that the sculpture be resilient to physical abuse by wind and man, and not easily create MOOP (matter out of place).

Check out photos of last year's sculptures at our Facebook, http://www.facebook.com/#!/www.citylights.org
Or our website www.cityoflites.com
Or contact us at citylights@burningtribe.com "

HELP THE AFRIKABURN FIRE COLLECTIVE GET TO BURNING MAN

This? Is rad in oh-so-many ways. Monique writes:

"You may have heard the whispers from across the seas by now....Our flaming sculptural performance VLAM STOF (Flame & Dust) Odd-I-See is coming from your trusty dusty South African Regional, AfrikaBurn all the way to Burning Man in 2013!

A life-size T-Rex roars across the playa while boxing bunnies, swimming polar bears, haunting hyenas and a 60-foot pendulum swing to the beat. All alive and burning in a cheeky evocation of a primordial struggle as the earth-creatures of steel and fire battle it out over limited resources. We need your help in getting there!

We are transporting our sculptures and our renegade group of engineers, artists, and carpenters from South Africa all the way to Black Rock City. It's going to be one heck of a swim, if not for YOU!

Please DONATE via our Indiegogo page: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/lizzy-the-t-rex-needs-your-help-to-come-home/x/488793
We need to raise $25,000 and we don't have long to do it.

For more info: https://www.facebook.com/AfrikaBurnFireCollective

We can't wait to set our creatures free in Black Rock City
Thank you amazing, wonderful people, with love, the AfrikaBurn Fire Collective."

TEMPLE OF WHOLLYNESS SEEKS WHITE FABRIC DONATIONS

Bunnie (who creates mind-blowingly beautiful textile art installations) writes:

"The Temple of Whollyness is looking for white fabric donations. Preferably cotton or a natural fiber but not synthetic - like old white sheets, canvas, and muslin. It can be white, off-white or cream. If you have rolls of white cotton canvas fabric – even better!

We are making 4,000 square feet of artistic shade quilts and the fabric you donate will be used for this purpose.

If you have a donation and live in the San Francisco/Oakland/Bay Area and can drop it off – that would be so helpful. If you live outside the Bay Area or want to make arrangements to have it picked up – we will try to make it happen. In all cases, please email Bunnie: spicebon3@yahoo.com

Wholly yours,
The Temple 2013"

UTAH'S REGIONAL BURN EVENT - GRANTSVILLE, UT - JULY 11-14

The Utah Burners write:

"Every mid July on a local Utah playa, Burners gather to celebrate a unique Burner culture in Utah. This festival is sanctioned by the Regional Burning Man Network and is intended to create immediate experience and personal connection, encouraging relationships and collaborations that enable people to act more powerfully than individuals alone could dream — especially in the face of the daunting social realities of the 'default world'.

We began as one of the very first official Burning Man Regional Festivals in the world. Since then we have evolved into a dynamic, year-round, active community whose mission is to ignite a sustainable culture of creativity and self-expression!

The 2013 Element 11 Arts Festival will be held July 11-14, 2013 at Seabase in Grantsville, UT. For tickets and additional information, visit http://element11.org/"

ADOPT A NEIGHBORHOOD -- OR PERHAPS A STREET CORNER

One of Burning Man's 10 Principles is Civic Responsibility ... and what better way to express that than to adopt a neighborhood or a nearby street corner to help beautify and maintain it, right?

You could organize a posse, and do periodic MOOP sweeps. You could make sure the street signs aren't getting obscured. Help little old ladies across the street. Get creative ... see a need, create a solution!

Warning: the resulting feeling of self-satisfaction might be contagious.
