**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/

Greetings friends! We hope this finds you well, and enjoying yourselves as the year drifts into Fall. And we particularly hope that our friends along the eastern seaboard of the US are weathering Hurricane Sandy safely ... sure sounds like a whopper.

But tell ya what, when disaster strikes, ain't no place we'd rather be than with other self-reliant Burners who know how to gift their skills to those in need, cuz yeah, that's how we roll. Stay safe out there, folks!

We're excited to tell you that we passed the BLM inspection last week with flying colors, and it's all thanks to YOU and your efforts to Leave No Trace ... that AND the heroic efforts of the Playa Restoration crew that has now returned (albeit a bit dusty, bleary-eyed and somewhat disoriented) from their long days in the desert sun.

And just in time too, because guess what? It has already started to snow in Gerlach. Brrrrrr. We're hoping for a big winter that will tamp down the playa surface for next year ... but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

We've got a nice little JRS for you this time around, featuring some beautiful photography, videography, stories -- AND A BRAND NEW SECTION called "Black Rock City Civics", which will feature one tidbit per JRS about being an upstanding citizen of Black Rock City (How do community bikes work? What's good generator etiquette? What are the limits of radical self-expression? Is wood MOOP? You get the idea). It promises to be illuminating for both first-timers and vets alike.

The Man burns in 305 days!

BURNING MAN PASSES BLM INSPECTION - 2013 IS ON!

We're excited to report (and you're likely excited to hear) that Burning Man has passed the BLM inspection of Black Rock City's footprint on the Black Rock Desert. This means that Burning Man 2013 will happen, which is rad, of course.

Big thanks to all of YOU who did your part to Leave No Trace, and to the hard-working Playa Restoration crew (the largest ever) to tackle the task at hand: removing every last trace of Black Rock City.

WELL DONE EVERYBODY! Here's the full story, as told by The Hun:

HELP REUNITE LOST CAMERAS WITH THEIR OWNERS

Turns out this has become a super fun annual tradition. Here's Burning Man staffer Lee Anna Mariglia to tell you about it (including a highly-apropos video addendum):

"A small selection of images from the cameras turned into Playa Info's Lost and Found at this year's event have been uploaded to Flickr. Designed to help reunited cameras with their rightful owner, this project was first begun in 2010 with great success. We ask you and your friends to peruse these images and, if you recognize any friendly faces, please let those friendly face owners know that their camera has been found.

Detailed instructions for how one would reunite with their camera are found below each image.

To get started, check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/burning_man_lost_and_found/

Happy hunting,
Lee Anna

WHAT'S UP WITH TICKETS FOR BURNING MAN 2013?

We know you're wondering. Even as last year's tickets were just going on sale, we began reviewing what worked, what didn't, and ways we could improve the system for future years. We are listening to your feedback, collecting input from many voices and experts in the community, and are deep in the process of working out the plan for this year. These are not decisions we take lightly and there are many factors to consider, so please be patient as we determine the ticketing plan for 2013.

All announcements related to 2013 tickets will be included in future editions of the Jackrabbit, with full information posted on the web site ... so stay tuned!

TWO VIDEOS FROM COOL ART INSTALLATIONS

Michael Emery sent us in this video of his piece "Nelumbo Nucifera" from Burning Man 2011. We'll admit we didn't get to see it at night, which now that we're seeing this footage, we realize that was REALLY DUMB. Because it was cool. See:

http://vimeo.com/45848840

Second up, we have The Starlight Project from Burning Man 2012, by Erich Remash, Jeremy Berglund, Don Peterson and Chad Ingle. It's a beautiful set of laser-cut icosahedrons (we're admittedly a bit foggy on our advanced geometry, so we're trusting the artists here) laid out in the formation of the constellation Orion. Which is cool.

http://vimeo.com/50586237

See? Cool.

FULL CIRCLE: GEORGE POST'S BURNING MAN BOOK EVENT - SF - NOVEMBER 13

Our friend George Post writes to tell us of this event, supporting his new (and excellent, we must say) Burning Man photography book.

"ASMP NorCal presents a Burning Man book event on November 13th with George Post at Fort Mason in San Francisco.

Long-time playa photographer George Post first met the Burning Man at Fort Mason when the 1991 Man was erected and displayed on a floating barge tied between the piers on the Summer Solstice of that year. Following the ceremonial "Raising of the Man" and the generator-powered illumination of his neon nervous system, a film of the first (1990) Black Rock Desert burn was shown in the Cowell Theatre. Impressed by the photographic possibilities, George journeyed to the 1991 event and has continued to attend every year since.

Now the Northern California Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) presents a Fort Mason evening with George and his new book, "Dancing with the Playa Messiah," in the Southside Theatre in Building D on November 13th. Social hour with light refreshments begins at 6pm, program to follow from 7-9pm. General Admission is $10 (free to ASMP General Members, $5 for ASMP Associate and Student Members).

George's self-published book is a 216-page 12x12" hardback with nearly 1000 color photographs from 21 consecutive years of documenting Burning Man. George will present a slideshow of images from his book and talk about the technical challenges of documenting Burning Man in a harsh, dusty desert environment; the changes brought about by the exponential growth of the event; and the transition from film photography to digital.

Autographed copies of the book will be available for purchase after the program.

Visit http://asmpnorcal.org/drupal/node/1456 for full details and ticket pre-sales. The Southside Theatre is a small 160-seat venue, so advance ticket purchase is recommended.

See more about George's book at http://playa-messiah.com and https://www.facebook.com/PlayaMessiahPictureBook "

FLAME EFFECTS FOR THE ARTIST - SEATTLE, WA - DECEMBER 1-2

DaveX, who manages all the fire safety on playa (bless his heart), writes:

"Our friends at the Hazard Factory and Ignition Northwest are our hosts as the next Flame Effects for the Artists class comes to Seattle Washington.

Attention all artists who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their art! This class is for you ...

The workshop will be teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel based flame effects into your work. This class is great for the beginning fire artist and always has something new for the 'expert'. Each one of these classes has drawn participants who have had all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions and projects that have been both fun and challenging.

This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating a small flame element into their work, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level.

The cost of this 2-Day class will be $150. Both days' classes will be from 10am – 5pm. Printed materials and a crappy but filling lunch of whatever cheap food we can get will be provided each day.

Joining Dave X in leading this class will be Eric Smith, Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas. We will also have displays and demonstrations of fire art from several local fire artists!

Check out some pics of past classes:

Come and join us for this weekend to hang out with other fire artists and have a blast, no pun intended. We have room for 40 and will be taking walk up registration the day of the event, space permitting. Email your name to Fuelmaster@gmail.com to reserve your spot."

BRAND-BE-GONE! COVER YOUR LOGOS

One of Burning Man's 10 Principles is "Decommodification", by which our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. Black Rock City is the one place in the world where you don't have to be inundated by advertising. In this spirit, participants have long been encouraged to cover, augment or mutate (usually to humorous effect) logos on their rental vehicles, et al. This practice seems to have languished in recent years, but we hope to see its revival in 2013 and beyond. Go forth and Decommodify!

Well, San Francisco Decompression was last weekend, and it turned out to be a beautiful gathering of the tribe, as it has been for oh so many years ... and this year was particularly sweet. Wonderful to see all your shining faces again! Yeah, we missed you.

Now, if you're in the LA area, you really really must get to LA Decom,TOMORROW (Saturday, October 13) ... cuz it's gonna be awesome.

In the last couple weeks, we've had a number of folks send in their accounts of their virgin Burn experiences, which we thought was pretty cool ... and we thought you'd enjoy reading them. Oh and that reminds us, you should also take some time (and maybe have a box of tissue at hand) to take a look at the (133 at last count) comments on our "Hey First-Timers! How Was Your Burn?" post on the Burning Blog. Check it out, and maybe add YOUR story:

http://bit.ly/SlyTIp

Out in the Black Rock Desert (remember that place?), the Playa Restoration crew has wrapped up their efforts for 2012, and we've got the full recap on the Burning Blog ... see below for details!

Oh and lastly ... last call to have your 2012 event feedback factored into our planning for 2013. Email it to feedback@burningman.com before November 1st. We love your feedback, really. So this is us, thanking you.

The Man burns in 323 days!

PLAYA RESTORATION COMPLETE - MOOP MAP FINAL RESULTS ARE IN!

First off, HUGE props to the Playa Restoration crew, who have been toiling in the Black Rock Desert since the Burn, working to restore the playa back to its original condition, leaving no trace of our having been there. Big ups to DA for his passion, dedication and tireless pursuit of LNT, and his skills in coordinating such a Herculean effort. We exalt you!

Equally big ups to The Hun and Vertumnus for skillfully documenting the whole process so we can watch along in real time, via the Burning Blog. Here's their final recap of the whole process, so you can see how our whole city did (answer: awesome):

1 MILE CLOCK IN GUINNESS BOOK!

Jim Bowers writes:

"On October 4th, Artist Jim Bowers was notified that the 1MileClock Project ('Burning Time') has OFFICIALLY been listed into the Guinness Book of World Records! The 2011 art project created a giant laser clock over the heads of 50,000 Festival goers covering an area of 3.25 miles in circumference and 1.25 miles in diameter. The controversial clock kept accurate time (as opposed to ""playa time"") to within 1/2000 of a second.

This new record creates a brand new category in the Guinness Book entitled 'World's Largest Timepiece'. Over 100 Artists and participants on the project are eligible to receive personalized record holder certificates from Guinness. Contact Jimbowers@foothill.net for details.

EPIC JOURNEY: KAYDEN KLEINHANS CYCLING TO FROM AFRIKABURN TO BURNING MAN

Kayden Kleinhans has undertaken an epic journey, this from him:

"My mini art installation at AfrikaBurn was a leather bound journal which I placed in the Temple for the duration of the event. The journal was filled with the songs, hopes dreams and aspirations of the AfrikaBurn community. This journal is on board with me and being hand delivered to the temple at the burn in Nevada in 2013. The journey will take 12 months and I am currently in Curitiba the state capital of Parana".

There is a move for keen burners to join him on the last leg of his journey just before Burning Man next year, cycling from Reno to Black Rock City. Interested in getting involved and joining? Email shani@afrikaburn.com.

THE GIFT PROLIFIC GALLERY AND OPENING

This is pretty rad ... check it out. Joshua writes:

"The Gift Prolific is an art project that was created by Joshua Coffy. Everyday since last year's burn, Josh gave a gift or did something nice for someone. Then he would go home and make a small painting about each day's gift experience. At this year's burn he gifted away all of the 333 paintings! Each painting has a number on the back of it and can be tracked on www.theGiftProlific.com. You can read about each gift experience that inspired each piece of art. If you were gifted one of these paintings on the playa Joshua would love to hear from you! Where is the painting? What did you do with it? Did you keep it? Did you gift it away? Do you have a picture? Please check out the site and send Josh an email. Take care."

PEOPLE IN MOTION SCREENING AT BMHQ - SAN FRANCISCO, CA - OCTOBER 18

WHAT: "People in Motion" Screening plus Q&A with the Filmmaker and Artist, Lonnie Tisdale
WHEN: Thursday, October 18th, 6:45PM-9PM
WHERE: Burning Man HQ, 995 Market Street, 15th Floor San Francisco, CA 94103

Those familiar with the training discipline parkour--or "free running"--know that its push to move creatively and freely throughout the world is more than an exercise routine, it's a philosophy for life. "People in Motion", in its focus on parkour, showcases the potential people have to move through time and space. Shot along the West Coast and in Black Rock City and using an original score and composite editing, the film inspires viewers with its fresh perspective on how the individual can move creatively through a number of environments. Just as Burning Man's Ten Principles inspire Burners to come together as a collaborative community in the face of the harsh Black Rock Desert, parkour's philosophy of overcoming obstacles is about defeating and adapting to both the mental and physical barriers which surround us every day.

The ninety minute film will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmaker and parkour practitioner Lonnie Tisdale. The film begins at 7:30p. Light appetizers and a wine and beer bar will be open during the first thirty minutes of the event. Q&A to follow the film. It's FREE so there's really no excuse... come on down!

To learn more, check out the film's website at https://peopleinmotionmovie.com.

We hope your decompression process is going about as well as you could hope for (we know it ain't easy). To help smooth your way, we've got listings for upcoming Decompression events, a great post about how to make life more like Burning Man like ALL THE TIME, and if you need to just drop in and tune out, a listing of some great DJ sets from the playa this year (we're listening to some great ones as we write ... they really keep you in the move and groove).

There are two particular pieces to which we'd like to direct your attention, and that's a) Justin Jones's really excellent "Radical Travel" podcast about Burning Man (you'll find it in the Photos Video and Audio section), and b) Leah Lamb's article "Partying for Planet and Dancing with God" (found in the Writings section). Both of these are guaranteed to trip your trigger.

Finally, if you'd like to follow along as the Playa Restoration crew continues their heroic, Herculean efforts to rid every last trace of Black Rock City from the Black Rock Desert (and document how YOUR camp did), well then ... here ya go:

http://blog.burningman.com/tag/moop-map-live-2012/

Oh and hey, we miss you guys! We hope to see you out at SF Decompression ... there's a LOT going on in town that weekend, so be sure to plan your travel carefully.

The Man burns in 334 days (though it feels like tomorrow)!

FOLLOW THE MOOP MAP LIVE!

The Playa Restoration Crew are out on playa AS WE SPEAK picking up the last remnants of Black Rock City 2012, and tracking which camps were naughty and which were nice (e.g. good at their Leave No Trace efforts). Lucky for you, The Hun is documenting the process together with Vertumnus's incredible photography so you can follow along at home via the Burning Blog.

See how your camp did! See how your neighbors did! See how we ALL did!

Remember folks, if we don't Leave No Trace, BURNING MAN DOESN'T HAPPEN ON THE BLACK ROCK DESERT ANYMORE. So this is serious stuff, and these people are killing it out there, so we can do it again next year ... and the year after that ....

DID YOU GET FED BY BRC WHEELS ON MEALS?

New for 2012 was BRC Wheels on Meals. Created and organized by Dazzle!, this small but mighty group of 7 fed over 450 art crew team members on playa during build week. Our menu was simple...microwave meals, pudding cups and ice cream but our motto is what set us apart. ""Go ahead and eat, we'll work on your project"" resulted in many opportunities for us to help artists. We not only fed people, we also helped build, fixed equipment, moved materials, offered advice and even went on a run to Gerlach for supplies. If you were fed by us, helped by us or have pictures, we'd love to hear from you. Visit our facebook page at:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/BRCWheelsOnMeals/?ref=ts

We look forward to feeding you again next year!

PLAYUZZLE - INTERACTIVE PUZZLE AT SF DECOMPRESSION

Playuzzle - the Interactive Walk-Through Playa Puzzle - Join the team! Meet the artist at Decompression!

Playuzzle is a 4,000 sq ft interactive puzzle with 16 lighted towers. As you walk between them (breaking an IR beam) and/or press the buttons and switches located in the field of towers, you have made a ""move"" and the tower colors will change. Participants try to figure out what each move does and then solve the puzzle.

We'll have one sample tower to show at SF Decompression. Come by and meet the artist, and if you like, join the Team! We have 26 Key roles to fill, ranging from serious time commitments to small ones. Or, if you want to help without taking on a Key responsibility, sign up to join one of the teams.

Look for the 9-foot high, 4-foot square, lighted tower with the EL-wire outline.
