GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Happy Winter Solstice Eve. We have reached the last Jackrabbit Speaks of the year, folks. It’s almost time for the world to start tilting back towards Burning Man season.

That also means it’s almost time to do the Ticket Dance again. Here you’ll find the overview of the 2017 ticket sale.

On top of that, we’ve got some interesting news about sustainable tech initiatives, some major upper-stories and one downer-but-funny-story, and an incredible documentary series about the 2016 Temple. There’s also a special mission, should you choose to accept it.

Finally, at year’s end, we ask those who are able to consider a donation to Burning Man Project. Our nonprofit supports Burners to do incredible things, but in turn it needs the support of Burners to make that possible. Thank you!

The Man burns in 256 days.

2017 Ticket Sale Preview

It’s nearly 2017, which means it’s time to talk tickets.

The process will be pretty much the same this time around. The biggest change you’ll note is that the price of regular-tier tickets is increasing from $390 to $425.

Our costs increase each year while our population cap has been the same for the past few years. In 2016 we held fast in order to offset the blow of Nevada’s Live Entertainment Tax, which we recognize was a significant burden for ticket buyers. This year, we need to make the move.

Black Rock Labs Sustainable Tech Accelerator Launches as Black Rock Solar Declares Victory

Sybil Hatch writes:

“Black Rock Solar is declaring victory. After almost 10 years of accomplishments in low-cost solar power, Black Rock Solar will pivot to become Black Rock Labs, an accelerator for clean-tech innovations arising from the Burning Man world.

‘Black Rock Labs will enable us to leverage emerging technologies that weren't available eight years ago to significantly reduce the carbon footprint at the Burning Man event,’ says David Shearer, chair of the board of directors.”

Building a City of Radical Inclusion

Dr. Victor Pineda writes:

“For the past few years, I’ve been dreaming about a city where everyone was included. It could be called a radical city because it breaks with conventions. A conventional city has spaces of exclusion, has pockets of poverty, and of wealth. A conventional city has structures, rules, and standards that may be unjust.

Cities have limits on where certain people can go and what certain people can do. They also all reflect in some way the underlying values of their citizens. A radical city includes everyone, no matter how they look, who they are, and what they can or cannot do.

There is one city I know that qualifies as radical, Black Rock City, Nevada.”

Give Unto Others: Your Playa Gifting Stories and Artifacts

In the holiday spirit, Mia Quagliarello writes:

“‘The playa provides’ is an axiom that is proven true again and again. You need something, and it miraculously appears, often from a stranger who seems to have an uncanny ability of knowing exactly what you need when you need it. We’ve all been there.

At other times, you don’t need anything, but the playa provides anyway. Thoughtful gifts, mementos of Burning Man culture, gestures of kindness, even homemade sourdough bread baked right at camp — there is so much bounty in the desert.

Here are some stories of gifts you gave or got on the playa.”

Off-Topic: I Disagree With Your Festive Holiday Wishes!

On the other hand, Caveat writes:

“‘Happy holidays,’ you say? ‘Merry Christmas?’ ‘Have a great New Year?’

Wrong!

You couldn’t be more wrong.

You couldn’t be more wrong if you used creationism as an excuse to deny global warming. You couldn’t be more wrong if you said capital gains tax cuts will help acai berries cure cancer. You couldn’t be more wrong if you said the War in Iraq is filled with hot single girls just waiting for your call.

Lies. All of them. Lies.”

Geometry and Climate Change: Gregg Fleishman’s Otic Oasis

AngelBe a.k.a. Pamela Biery writes:

“Otic Oasis’ rhombohedric structure is based on the diamond form of the rhombic dodecahedron constructed within the framework of a 3-D checkerboard of cubes. The “Lost Triangle of Pythagoras,” which defines the diamond shape, is the unifying factor of Fleishman’s design.

Fleishman sees this design as a solution to the changing needs of people on a planet under pressure. Such buildings can be disassembled and moved in the face of climate-driven disasters.”

A Culture Forced “Underground”

Dear Burning Man volunteer and former Bay Area dweller April Jones wrote this powerful statement about artist spaces in the wake of the recent tragic fire in Oakland:

“This past weekend’s devastating fire in Oakland hit our people, our chosen family, and due to the tragedy, everyone is on high alert. Events for now are being cancelled.

I have read comments from many who don’t understand why people would go to places that may not be up to code or attend an event that may not have the proper permit from the city. For those who don’t understand this world, I want to talk a bit about the “underground” scene from my perspective.”

GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Dear, dear people. Your Jackrabbit feels like holding people close these days. This issue is such a mix of ecstatic and painful information. It's just kinda… like that out there right now.

Good news first: Burning Man 2017 has a theme: Radical Ritual. The Man is inside! Get a load of that below. And right in keeping with the art theme announcement, the BRC Honoraria Grant cycle is now open. Plus, we have more opportunties for artists, as well as inspiring stories from Black Rock and Standing Rock alike.

Okay, now for the hard part. Last weekend, disaster struck in Oakland, right in the heart of our community. At a large musical gathering, a fire broke out, and many lives were lost. In this issue you'll find a message from Burning Man to our community affected by this tragedy, as well as some ways to come together, give and get support.

We love you.

The Man burns in 270 days.

LATEST NEWS

Burning Man 2017: Radical Ritual

Beyond the dogmas, creeds, and metaphysical ideas of religion, there is immediate experience. It is from this primal world that living faith arises. In 2017, we will invite participants to create interactive rites, ritual processions, elaborate images, shrines, icons, temples, and visions.

Our theme will occupy the ambiguous ground that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime. The human urge to make events, objects, actions, and personalities sacred is protean. It can fix on and inhabit anyone or anything. This year our art theme will release this spirit in the Black Rock Desert.

To the Burning Man Community Regarding the Oakland Fire

As we’re all too painfully aware by now, a devastating fire broke out at a gathering in Oakland, California on Friday night. As of this morning (December 5), the death toll was 36, with a portion of the building’s remnants still left to search.

Many in the Burning Man community have been deeply affected by this tragic event, and many more across our global network have reached out to ask how we’re doing. In our tight-knit community of creatives, each of us has been touched if not directly, through friends of friends. The degrees of separation are minimal and the collective sense that “it could have been any of us” is as real as it is heartbreaking. We’re deeply saddened by this loss and we’re holding the victims and their friends and families close to our hearts.

True to the Burning Man spirit, we’re also asking ourselves what we can do, how we can help.

From Black Rock to Standing Rock

Christopher Breedlove writes:

“It’s hard to get a sense of what’s truly happening at Standing Rock. Between the myriad voices from the field, misinformation from the opposition, and the near absence of major media outlets, it takes a lot of work to get the real story.

I just came back from a mission to Standing Rock with a crew of Burning Man participants and staff, some of whom are still on the ground. Here’s what we saw, what we did, and what we learned.”

Not Even a Wheelchair Could Stop Seth Mohler From Going Home

Mia Quagliarello writes:

“Having been to Burning Man twice before the accident, Mohler was determined to put new meaning into the idea of Radical Self-reliance. A builder and a fixer with a background in TV production, he always felt his gift to the playa was helping people, from helping with RV problems to securing shade structures. In 2015, he led his camp, Tortwava, remotely, helping them prepare to have a spectacular Burn. (At the last minute, he realized he wasn’t physically ready to join them, much to his wife’s relief.)

But in 2016, it was time to go home.”

The Playa Provides: A Journey of Starting Over at Burning Man

Maria Gotay writes:

“The temptation to lose myself to the desert nights, to become a dot in the LED glitterscape, was strong. But this wasn’t my first rave, and I was here for so much more than just the party. I was on the mend and I was on my own for the first time. I was here to reclaim my life on my terms. I just happened to be doing it one of the world’s most legendary gatherings. I had a lot to learn.”

Burning Man has long had a presence at South by Southwest in Austin, and this year they’re commissioning original artworks! How cool is that? They write:

“Visual artists have always played a role at SXSW through the filmmakers, musicians, and technologists coming to Austin each spring. In 2017, we are expanding our art initiative to deliver an experience of unexpected discovery and inspiration, bringing together diverse people, mediums, and topics.
