GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Here’s how you can tell Radical Ritual’s gonna be a great theme: It’s not even June, and already the community is exploding with theme-related projects.

Almost everything in this packed JRS involves some kind of Radical Ritual, from the Shrines at the Man base, to the on-playa Shabbat for 700 people, to the rituals of the humble dung beetle. Even the fastidiously science-y Census crew is in on the ritual.

You know what other Burning Man ritual is really important? Leaving No Trace. In fact, MOOP is on the rise, so we’d better do that ritual a lot this year. Watch DA’s video below for more.

The art projects and summertime events are coming fast and furious. ’Tis (almost) the season!

The Man burns in 100 days.

2017 Man Pavilion Shrines and Processionals

Hale Chamblee writes:

“With a theme like Radical Ritual, it’s no wonder Burning Man 2017 will be home to 30 different Shrines.

At the center of Black Rock City, 20 Shrines will inscribe a circle around the Man base, known this year as the Temple of the Golden Spike. Throughout the week, the space will be energized with processions and rituals, inviting the denizens of BRC to explore what we as a community consider sacrosanct.”

Buy Fuel From BRC Petrol to Protect the Playa

Hotspot writes:

“BRC Petrol will again be helping keep the city running by giving registered art projects, Theme Camps and Mutant Vehicles the ability to purchase fuel on playa for 2017.

You can help us protect the playa by storing as little fuel as possible in your camp. Each point of transfer is a risk of spill, fire or worse. It is preferable to have large generators filled daily by the Petrol Department than to store fuel in your camp and fill equipment yourself.

Registration will open in early June and will close on July 15. Theme Camps and Mutant Vehicles should be prepared to register for fuel shortly after receiving their approval letters. An assessment of daily fuel needs will be requested at registration. Should you need a breakdown of your fuel usage from 2016, please contact petrol@burningman.org.”

Bruno Selmi 1923–2017

Danger Ranger writes:

“Bruno’s Country Club was the most notable building in Gerlach when Burning Man first arrived there in 1990. Constructed in a style typical of frontier architecture, the front wall extends above the roof to create a more impressive façade. Over the years, we would come to know Bruno himself as an impressive character, even larger in life.”

Ritual Principles of Milk + Honey, Purveyors of Radical Shabbat Since 2008

Alessandra Wollner and H. Connor Moss write:

“When Burning Man’s 2017 theme became public, a collective YAAAAAAAAAY! rang through Facebook Group for the Theme Camp, Milk + Honey. We Honeys (as we who belong to this community call ourselves) were amped. Radical Ritual happens to be our raison d’etre.

For the past 10 Burns, every Friday at sundown, Milk + Honey has hosted a playa-wide Kabbalat Shabbat service, the Jewish liturgy honoring the end of the work week and the sacred transition to the Day of Rest. Since 2014, we’ve followed our Shabbat service by offering 400+ guests a sumptuous, sit-down meal. To our rough, proud count, about 700 desert dwellers attended Milk + Honey’s ninth Shabbat service last year.”

Losing My Non-Religion: Chronicle of an Emerging Sacrament Among Native Burning Nerds

S. Megan Heller (with a shit load of help from Picky!) writes:

“Childhood-me would never have guessed that adulthood-me would integrate religious rituals so thoroughly into my life and work. But as I get older, and as I have studied other cultures, I recognize the importance that symbols – lab coats, games, oaths, meals – play in creating and legitimating feelings of inclusion and belonging. And now that I feel like an enduring and integral part of a community, I want to make sure that the people in my life – especially my kids – feel they belong somewhere as well.”

Get In: Brennan Steele’s Dung Bug

Jessi Sprocket writes:

“The Dung Bug is an interactive, mobile installation inspired by the radical ritual of the dung ball rolling beetle. Participants will be able to enter the 10-foot-tall steel dung ball where they will work together to walk the beetle and the ball around the playa. An experienced bug pilot will guide the installation ‘across the dust and towards its goal of spawning new friendships and shared experiences through group participation.’

The real dung beetle uses the sun, moon, and Milky Way to navigate its way to a sandy nook to bury their prize. Nighttime pixel-mapped LED lighting and starcaster lights will provide a homage to the dung beetle’s celestial guides. Brennan’s goal is to create a moment where strangers bond, support each other and have a beautiful shared memory, all within a gorgeous steel dung ball.”

AfrikaBurn: The Unbearable Whiteness of Burning

This piece is powerful. More like this. Pretty Prince of Parties writes:

“If the Burning Man experience is about getting out of our comfort zones, what could be more uncomfortable than taking a hard look at the privilege that allows us to spend a week roughing it in the desert at enormous cost halfway around the world?”

Leave No Trace: MOOP Is on the Rise!

Leaving No Trace is one of the easiest things to understand about Black Rock City’s culture, but that doesn’t mean we can take it for granted. On the contrary, MOOP (Matter Out Of Place) is on the rise, and if we don’t get a handle on it, it could threaten the continuation of the event.

D.A., manager of Playa Restoration, made this video to educate and rally the troops (read: that’s all of us) on the nature of the MOOP problem and how we can stop it. Watch, learn, and share it far and wide.

Deep Playa String Quartet Seeking New Members

Phoenix writes:

“The way I reckon, Mozart would have lived it up on the playa. Vivaldi too. Brahms would be hopeful to have a moment with Clara at the Temple. Schubert would envy the looping decks. Beethoven might judge the number of kazoos participating in his 9th symphony. Ravel would look around and think nothing’s changed in 100 years.

Help bring these great artists to life on the playa by joining the Deep Playa String Quartet. Seeking intrepid, talented musicians on viola, violin, and cello. Performance Thursday at 4 pm at the PlayaChoir Dome plus more.

If this art project is for you, write Christina.”

Begin your training runs now so you will suffer a little less in the world's funnest race — a race where kisses, shots of rum/whiskey/water are offered, dance parties, trampolines, high fives, running gels, and truly the ultimate high collide in the playa’s best LSD (Long Slow Distance).

Everyone must run with a water bottle or hydration backpack, and everyone will have fun. Plus, finish and earn the coolest piece of playa swag ever (medal!) and even a t-shirt too!”

Help Us Finish La Victrola

Adorable writes:

“La Victrola is the world’s largest Art-Nouveau gramophone — a five-ton steel sculpture and cabaret stage paying tribute to early music and performance. Its curated program transports listeners back to a time of vaudeville, speakeasies, and cabarets. After debuting just the horn and stage last year, the La Victrola crew is working hard to finish the full version with a nine-foot-tall box underneath with new railings, staircases and cabaret features, and take it back to Burning Man, and then beyond...”

Time Machine Coming to Playa — for Real

CAPTURE writes:

“A time machine made out of a vintage elevator cab is headed to the playa this year and is already causing a stir.

It will have two different looks, one for day time and one for night, enough LEDs to start a party, and will leave you with a lasting experience… if you can find it.

Hint: its somewhere out in deep playa.

This project is the proud recipient of a BRC Honorarium grant and is currently fundraising the remainder of the budget.”

St. Louis Regional Gateway Burn 2017 — Northern Ozarks, MO — June 8–11

Where: Private property near Belle, MO
When: June 8 – June 11

Robin Murphy writes:

“Time is a funny thing. We all think we’re moving right along forward, then before you know it, you don’t quite remember if something happened yesterday, or last year, and good luck explaining how you remember what happened next week.

Make memories new and old with us June 8–11 at Gateway Burn 2017: From Time to Time, as we explore the history of Earth, past, present, and future, and create the countless methods we might use to Get There.

More than just a history lesson, we want to know how you would get FROM here TO there, or how you would get around anywhen you landed. It’s an expedition through retrofuturism, a flight of futuretroism, with freaky frescos, creative cruisers, steam powered stabilizers, goofy garbs, alternative energy art cars, and futuristic flair.

Gateway Burn is an official Burning Man Regional Event in the Northern Ozarks area of Missouri.”
