ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

This is a juicy one. It’s getting to be that time of year.
The big news is that Burner Express Bus tickets are on sale now! Bunnies, your faithful Jackrabbit rode the bus last year, and it was without a doubt the best Exodus experience this bunny has ever had. You should really think about it.
There’s a whole lotta art to show you now that build season is well underway. This issue’s got artist interviews, it’s got artist storytellers, and it’s got a whole heap of art installations to support.
There’s also some nuts and bolts for prospective artists and performers you won’t want to miss. Want to perform at Center Camp? Want to get help schlepping your art out to its spot? This JRS has some deets for you.

Give a Gift to Burning Man, and a Theme Camp Will Match It
 |
|
| |
We know. You’re already spending a lot to make your and other people’s Burn happen. That’s not lost on us, and thank you. But for the next two months, every donation to Burning Man Project will be matched by a generous Theme Camp… up to $150,000! In the spirit of Gifting, they aren’t looking for any recognition or special treatment. They’re not doing this to gain access to the VIP air-conditioned nightclub out in deep playa (this is a joke, repeat, this is a joke). They simply want to help keep the fire burning for all of us and hopefully inspire you to contribute too.
What would your donation actually do, you ask? Here are a few things: grants to artists, artist support services on playa, civic engagement, Burners Without Borders, the global Regional Network, and a whole lot more. You can learn about these programs in our 2016 Annual Report. You’re already giving so much as volunteers, Theme Camp/Mutant Vehicle team members, build crews, and as regional participants. You’re the ones who make Black Rock City “home” for all of us. For those who can, a gift to Burning Man Project helps us continue to serve our ever-expanding community. Thank you for considering a
donation.
You can give online or contact development@burningman.org.

The Solacii: Tigre Bailando's Art of Sacred Space
Jessi Sprocket writes:
“Solace — to give comfort, especially in times of grief or misfortune — is the “primary motivating offering” of The Solacii, says Black Rock City Honorarium artist Tigre Bailando. Since 2012, thousands of participants at various events such as Burning Man, Envision and Rainbow Serpent have witnessed Tigre’s artistic process develop through large-scale sacred sculpture. All of his works create a relationship between the art and the human. They have an interactive aspect asking the participant to enter the sculpture, to join the piece and to add their own personal energy to it.”

Burning Man Storytelling Moves From the Fringes to the Main Stage
JR “Nexus” Russ writes:
“I am in the Bedroom on a hot, humid summer afternoon in Washington, D.C. Although the city being built on a swamp is just an urban legend, it is days like this that make me question if it might actually be true. The windows are closed, and there are about sixty of us in a room around 800 square feet in floor space. And Ten Principles )’( — the new show I am hosting at the Capital Fringe Festival — is about to begin.”

Camp Loveland – a Case Study in Radical Rituals
Dragonfly and Jenny Bee write:
“Over the years we’ve received powerful and heartfelt feedback from many of our members that these rituals and experiences not only provide a good time, but create a real sense of community, extending even into the world of everyday life. Our camp philosophy encourages exploration, community, responsibility, participation, play, and an opportunity to embody the best and most outrageous version of ourselves, and these rituals let us live that out. And of course, we always strive to lead from the heart. Put simply, we love to love. Our camp rituals allow us to put that love into practice.”

GLC 2017: What Is Burning Man’s Secret Mission?
Jon “Argus” Mitchell writes:
“When Burning Man participants talk about ‘getting it’ or ‘doing it right,’ what is the ‘It?’ Is it ‘transformation?’ Is it ‘permission?’ Is it a particular philosophy or way of life?
At the 2017 Burning Man Global Leadership Conference in Oakland, founding board member and Chief Transition Officer Harley Dubois contends that the ‘it’ is what happens when we step out of the game of money, value, and material status and start working on and giving to something we believe in.”

Want to Bring Art? Register Early!
Brody writes:
“The Burning Man Art Installation Questionnaire closes June 13, but please don’t wait until the last minute to register your art. Our small team of Artist Liaisons has a limited amount of time to contact each artist, and the flood of questionnaires they receive right before the deadline is overwhelming.
If you’re interested in receiving time on playa pre-event to install your art, or access to other resources, we highly suggest you register early to ensure our Liaisons have time to speak with you.
If you miss the June 13 deadline, we also have a Walk-in Registration form you can fill out in advance of the playa (but you will not be contacted pre-event and will finalize your art registration once you arrive at the ARTery on playa).
The last great reason to register your art early is art placement. We start finding great open playa placement for the art that registers early. If you have a preference for where you’d like your art to be located, it’s more likely we can accommodate you if you register early.
Thanks for helping art be even more awesome!”

How to Perform on the Center Camp Sound and Performance Stage
Beat writes:
“Do you have an original song in your heart, or rhymes bursting from your lips, or the urge to shake your groove thing in every limb? Do you dream of performing somewhere in this land of beautifully bizarre self-expression?
You’re in luck. Scheduling is officially open for the Sound and Performance Stage in Center Camp this year.
Whether you’re a seasoned performer or you’ve never done anything like this before, we want to help you and your unique talents find a time to shine in our performance schedule this year. Because no one does it like you.
If you’d like to make our stage part of your Radical Ritual this Burn, first make sure you have secured your ticket (because we really can’t schedule you until you do). Then visit our Sound and Performance Team website or email Beat, our Performance Lead, for more information."

Submit a Talk for the Center Camp Café Speaker Series
Chapless writes:
“Submissions are open for the Center Camp Café Speaker Series! Our theme this year is:
Break Your Frame
We are looking to explore the 'framing effect' and how it affects the ways we perceive, think and communicate. We want to spotlight the literal (and metaphorical) interpretations of frames and how they change our perceptions of art, as well as the basic understanding that how we phrase things changes our decision making.
Talks generally range in length from 10–30 minutes. Moderated Q&A follows every talk ranging in time from 5–15 minutes.
All submissions are welcome as long as general Burning Man ethos and values are upheld, i.e. no promotions of products, corporations, political candidates, or rigid partisanship.
Research, whether academic or experiential is welcomed and appreciated.
Talks that incorporate this year’s event theme (Radical Ritual), or the Speaker Series theme (Break Your Frame) will be given scheduling priority.
For more information, visit our site or email speakerseries@burningman.org.”

Tree of Ténéré
Zachary Smith writes:
“Made with 25,000 LED leaves, the four-story Tree of Ténéré is the largest interactive “light canvas” ever created.
Use your voices and movements to create colors, shapes and patterns in the canopy above. Watch DJs, choirs, and dancers perform in the treetop. Join in group yoga, meditations, and more under the shade.
Help us bring Ténéré to cities and festivals around the world, starting at Burning Man 2017.”

Light Years Away
Wynn Earl Buzzell Jr. writes:
“Light Years Away consists of a flat plane at 20’ above the ground. From this plane a massive central vortex spirals down to an altar. Above the plane three secondary vortices spiral up toward the heavens. These vortices are populated with over 4,000 individual LEDs. On the ground you can approach the massive vortex and step onto one of six illuminated tiles which compose the altar. In the absence of people the spirals of LED lights slowly pulse upward around the vortex. As the altar is populated the system of spiraling lights gets increasingly excited. When the altar is filled with six people the system of LED lights explodes with activity and triggers the upper vortices to shoot fire up into the air.”

Donate Books to the Dustiest Library in the World
Heavyweight writes:
“The Black Rock Public Library needs your help making this year’s book collection the best one yet. If your spring cleaning has turned up any books or comic books that you think someone would love, put them back into circulation by donating them to BRPL!
Donations are accepted year-round, both on and off the playa. All books will enter permanent circulation with a one-year checkout period. For more information, visit our website.”

Are You a Piano Tuner? Help Tune our HEARDT
Bara Anna Stejskalova writes:
“Project HEARDT is a highly interactive customized piano encompassed by a 3D heart structure which connects music and light. Participants create light pulses within the heart depending on what they play on the piano keyboard. HEARDT is bringing a piano to Black Rock City, a piano with its heart open to any expression. A piano that can play beautiful music, that can stir emotions circulating inside participants and viewers alike and bring visual light to the room and beyond.
Since it can be quite difficult for a piano to handle all natural elements in the desert, we would like to get in touch with piano tuner based in US and ideally coming to playa, because we want to make sure it is in good shape and has the right sound through the whole festival.”
Interested piano tuners should email Bara Anna
