GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

If you smelled ozone and playa dust when you opened this email, don't worry — your brain is mostly fine. It just smells like work in here because, well, there's lots of work in here, because it's already almost May!

There's also parties in here, but they're worky parties. The Newbie Orientation and Participation Faire, the Desert Arts Preview and Precompression, to be precise. To go along with those, we've got the first in a series of in-depth stories about 2017 BRC Honoraria artists from Jessi Sprocket.

And lest you think it's all about BRC, applications are now open for Burners Without Borders community micro-grants, so don't forget to think about the work right in your home community, too.

Send in your sticker designs, gol' dangit!

The Man burns in 130 days.

Hey, if You Want Stickers This Year, You Have to Create Them

So there are probably some artists reading this, right? Of those, some of them are probably capable of drawing inside of a circle, one presumes.

Well, to them, the Jackrabbit sez: Draw some Burning Man stickers. We’ll select some designs and print them. We’ll give them to everyone who goes to Burning Man. You just have to draw them. The deadline is May 29.

Submissions Open: BWB Community Micro-Grant Program 2017

Mr. Breedlove writes:

“Burners Without Borders is excited to announce the launch of our 9th annual community micro-grant program, and you are invited to apply! To date, BWB has provided over $100K in grants to over 90 projects that have left a positive trace around the world, leveraging a relatively small amount of money against the mighty power of the community’s capacity to make a difference.

Through BWB’s grant program, we are jump-starting creative, civic projects that grow community and make a positive impact. Real change starts at the grassroots level, and healthy communities emerge from citizens participating in actively creating the kinds of communities they want to live in. So submit your project ideas today!"

Application Deadline: June 1, at 5 pm PDT

Grant Awards: $100–$1,500

Gerlach–Empire Shuttle Bus Shutting Down

Terry “Retro” Schoop writes:

“For many years, Burning Man ran a shuttle bus service between Black Rock City and the towns of Gerlach and Empire. During the early years of high demand, two buses alternated the circuit, offering the shuttle service on an hourly basis. Over the years we reduced the schedule to better match decreasing ridership, which has been a steady trend since 2010. We were down to one bus making the two-hour run three times a day, twice on Saturday, and some of the later runs had a single rider. 2016 saw the lowest ridership in an eight-year period.

Some blame The Kid, Burning Man’s Gerlach-Empire shuttle depot manager between the reigns of The Owl and Human Jones. The Kid’s style of managing the shuttle bus operations was to gently interrogate riders as to why they would ever want to leave Black Rock City on such a beautiful day?”

Daruma Project: Fall Down Seven Times, Get up Eight

Jessi Sprocket writes:

“Angela Chang and the Daruma Project team were perimeter volunteers for Mazu Temple in 2015. They’ve been camping together for years, but this is their first large-scale project. The six foot tall wood, wire and papier-mâché Daruma Doll creation is actually their first work of art. “We had never really considered ourselves artists before,” said Angela. On their recent visit to the Burning Man Global Leadership Conference, they suddenly realized they had obtained artist status without even realizing it.”

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Burn: A Comprehensive Guide to Burning Man

Ninja writes:

“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Burn is a comprehensive event guide to Burning Man, detailing everything from the history and evolution of the event to traveling to and from (and around in) Black Rock City to building a camp (wiring said camp for solar power, gray water disposal, etc.) and surviving the Black Rock Desert (what to bring, the culture, how to change a bicycle tire, etc.) for a week.”

Playa Choir Seeks Singers, Musicians and Sound Support

Madi writes:

“The Playa Choir, in its 14th year on playa, seeks all singers, choristers and musicians to participate in our non-dogmatic, spirit-driven, playa-style Sunday morning service. We sing, we toast, we laugh and cry, we pray while tapping, and commune with champagne and granola bars, but mostly we sing dusty Burners home with songs of love while encouraging all to make life a brilliant and authentic work of art.

Visit our Facebook group to learn more about what we do, and send me (Kathleen Hollingsworth) a private message to get involved.”

Action Figure Family

Jallen Rix writes:

“Imagine walking across the desert and seeing a set of colorful shapes in the distance. Drawing closer, you discover they are life-size statues, and the closer you get the more you realize they are covered in small toys. Not just any toys: hundreds of action-figures! They’re so densely populated that these ‘heroes’ seem to create the larger statues by their magical convergence. On even closer inspection, you encounter moving parts, secret compartments, and activities to engage and play with.”
