GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

April Fools’! Oh, no, there’s no trick. There just weren’t any good Burning Man April Fools’ pranks this year, so we missed the sound of that phrase. The lack of pranks must have been due to all the serious awesome Burners have been committing lately, of which you’ll find a sampling below.

This issue’s packed full of ways to participate. There’s a paid residency on offer for people who are both artists and scientists. There are tempting offers to join a Burn Perimeter and/or help Playa Resto leave no trace. And for the newbies with no idea how to participate, we’re throwing a whole newbie faire (as per usual).

But before we go galavanting off into the coming Burn year, let’s take one last look back at the glorious Burn of 2016. Burning Man Project’s 2016 Annual Report is now available, so you can see how we did, and 2016 Black Rock City Census data is out, so you can see how you did.

Get on in there!

The Man burns in 145 days.

2016 in Review: Better, Faster, Stronger. Still No Daft Punk.

Our Annual Report is the in-depth look at what Burning Man Project is up to. It includes summaries of our active programs, including: Black Rock City, Art and Civic Engagement, Education, the Philosophical Center, the Global Network and Fly Ranch. The report also includes sections about Gifting and our organizational backbone that support all the nuts-and-bolts activities that make this unexpected, impractical, and persistently meaningful thing called Burning Man happen.

Want to understand what Burning Man Project is doing and where we’re going? This is the place to find — and then share — that information.

2016 Black Rock City Census Data Released

The Census Team writes:

“If you wonder about these things and have an affinity for numbers, we’ve got good news. The latest Black Rock City Census data is now available! If you attended the Burn in 2016 we hope you were one of thousands of participants who filled out our online survey after returning from the playa. If so, way to go! You helped make our analytical dreams come true so we can provide statistically reliable and valid estimates concerning the BRC population.”

Friends Don’t Let Friends Call Burning Man “a Festival”

Graham Berry writes:

“Burning Man is a lot of things to a lot of people. It’s a social experiment for the ages. It’s a far-reaching, phenomenal community. It’s a ritual that weaves together cultural traditions from peoples all over the world. Since nothing else is like it in the world, it can be hard to locate appropriate terms to explain it. For all the things that Burning Man certainly is, one that mindful Burners will vigilantly note that Burning Man is not, is a festival.

GLC 2017: And That’s a Wrap

Hundreds of organizers, leaders and artists from all over the Burning Man world have just wrapped up the 11th annual Global Leadership Conference, held this year in Oakland, California. Jane “Lioness” Lions, Mia Quagliarello, and Shawn Saleme — your Jackrabbit’s favorite people in the world right now — have racked up seven blog posts to fill everybody else in on what went down at this year’s GLC, and there’ll be more where that came from.

Ticket Scalpers Aren’t Ruining Burning Man, but They Are Trying to Exploit It

Rebecca “Nimbus” Throne writes:

“It’s incredibly disheartening to see listings for Burning Man tickets at exorbitant prices proliferate moments after the Main Sale has concluded. We hate it, you hate it, everyone except ticket scalpers hates it. But we in Ticketing have good news about that, and we want to make the truth absolutely clear: the majority of these inflated listings are bogus. They aren’t real. These listings are essentially phishing scams, looking to lure eager Burners so desperate to get to the playa that they’re willing to pay a premium to an unknown source to make their playa dreams come true.”

Burners We Once Knew: Rod Allen

A man after our own heart. Mrs. Lucky writes:

“I met Rod Allen and his partner Nod Miller at their first Burning Man in 2007 when he volunteered at the Black Rock Beacon. He was a white-bearded big British guy in a loud shirt and failing health, holding a stuffed panda. Nod had a sharp wit, flashy glasses and tendrils of magenta braids framing a friendly, forthright face.

Being around Rod and Nod was part Mother Goose and part Clockwork Orange. ‘It’s time to shoot up, Love,’ she’d say to remind him to take his insulin. They cruised the playa in a black London hack and took a Basil-Fawlty-like glee in teasing silly Americans. But when it came time to prepare a story for publication, it was quite apparent he was a pro.”

Keep the Burning in Burning Man! Volunteer for a Burn Perimeter

Kelsey Owens writes:

“Do you like fire?

Do you like Burning Man?

Do you want to help keep the burning in Burning Man?

Then you have to love Burn Perimeters!

For all the brilliant works of art that go up in blazes of glory, there’s a catch: Someone still needs to have their head on straight to ensure the safety of said glory. Who would want to do such a thing? Well, I would. Read on to see if you would, too.”

Don’t Bring Wood Killed by Pests Into Nevada

While we’re on the subject of fire, Brody writes:

“We love to burn stuff at Burning Man, because (as our Fire Art Safety Team manager DaveX says) without burning, it’s just… the Man, man. If you’re thinking of transporting wood to Burning Man, however, take note. Commercially-purchased or otherwise kiln-dried lumber is fine to bring in, build with, and burn. If you want firewood for your Theme Camp, please purchase it on your way to the event once you’re in Nevada. Don’t transport wood into Nevada that’s been killed by pests (pine beetle kill wood, etc).

The Nevada Department of Forestry says there are no specific LAWS prohibiting transporting wood across state lines into Nevada, but it’s highly discouraged to avoid spreading infestation of various insects that could do damage to Nevada’s forests.

Think of the forests when planning your burn, please!”

Calling Scientists and Artists: Paid Residency

Pretty sweet opportunity for all you smarty-pantses. Ms. Wiffles writes:

“Guerilla Science is partnering with the Pratt Institute, New York to support up to 15 artist-scientist collaborations to bring their creative work to Oregon Eclipse festival.

Music, cabaret, theater and art are pervasive at festivals, so why not science (with the exception of Burning Man)? We are seeking applicants interested in developing new forms of interactive installations and live events that mix science with art, music and play. We believe that games, hands-on workshops, participatory art, and immersive performances are great ways to connect with people. These types of creative expression are a unique way to engage with people who may be distant to science.

Scientists and artists will be grouped together to produce an interdisciplinary work of their choice. We’ll be matching based on interests and preferences. Groups will be provided with an honorarium of $4,500, two festival tickets and a travel subsidy per project team.”

Deadline to apply: April 28

Help the Morris Burner Hostel Stay Alive

Gemini writes:

“For nearly four years, the Morris Burner Hostel has provided a unique hostel experience, community center, art space, performance venue, and awesome playa vibe for Burners on their way to Black Rock City or just visiting Reno. We need help now!

The best way you can help us is by becoming a member. Just $50 a year helps us continue awesome programming and provide low-cost or free lodging and support for local and international Burners and artists, and you can stay with us at any time.

We also currently have a GoFundMe campaign. As a venue affected by nervous city officials in the aftermath of Ghost Ship, we’ve been required to install a sprinkler system, and our venue has been temporarily shut down, cutting our income in half. We also have a legal battle over our backyard and an easement the city wants to put there, forcing us to incur legal costs.

We are a community asset, resource and amazing space. Please help if you can.“

Unleash Your Power Within

Kahai Tate writes:

“Two 16' x 24' wooden structures, intended to remind you to embrace Immediacy, Kino Pālua will welcome you to become at one and interact with the ‘ahi’ or ‘wai’ sides of the sculpture. Feel the heat and hear the roar of the six propane poofers as you let it all go inside ahi, and be soothed by the calming and embracing experience awaiting you inside wai. A truly dual-natured experience.”
