ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Right around this time of year, Burners start champing at the bit, practically begging us (well, Larry, really) to announce next year's art theme so they can get rolling on their projects. And we'll admit ... it's historically not been without its challenges. But not this year!
For hark! The good and benevolent Mr. Harvey has listened to your cries, heard your pleas, and — after a fruitful collaboration with Burning Man's Education Director Stuart Mangrum — has emerged valiant from his secret underground lair, and bestowed upon us ...
The Burning Man 2016 Art Theme: Da Vinci's Workshop.
Pretty sweet, right? So get your innovation in gear, get your tinker on, and start creating, folks! Time to make some clever!
And right on the heels of the theme, we're just about to kick up the application process for our two art grant programs: Black Rock City Honoraria (for art destined for Black Rock City) and our Global Art Grants (for art designed for the wider world). If you want some monays to make your artses a reality, hop to it and apply! Becaaaaause ... guess what?
The Man burns in 312 days.

2016 Art Theme: Da Vinci's Workshop
Burning Man’s 2016 art theme is inspired by the Italian Renaissance of the middle fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, when an historic convergence of inspired artistry, technical innovation and enlightened patronage launched Europe out of the dark ages and into modernity.
Our story will focus on the republic of Florence, for it was here, in a city-state of about the same size and population as Black Rock City, that humanist ideals, a rediscovery of science, and funding from a newly moneyed class of entrepreneurs fueled a revolutionary cultural movement that redefined Western civilization.
Five centuries later, we will attempt to recreate this potent social alchemy by combining Burning Man art, maker culture and creative philanthropy to make Black Rock City the epicenter of a new renaissance.

Photos OF Found Items and FROM Found Cameras Are Now Posted
Your photos are adorable, by the way. Retro writes:
"We've posted pictures of many of the backpacks and phones, as well as pictures from the memory cards of many of the cameras, on our Flickr page. If you're missing a backpack, phone, or a camera, please look through those and include the reference number for that picture in the description of your item.
Remember, cameras or phones might be lurking in some backpacks. Just because you don't see your photos on Flickr doesn't necessarily mean we don't have your camera or phone. Even backpacks can get hidden in a pile of other stuff. Don't despair, send us a description via this submission form."

Tales from the Playa
Tales fom the Playa are the dreams and memories of events that took place in Black Rock City, as told by participants. That’s you.
There's plenty to read about Burning Man out there, but we believe the most intimate and vivid picture comes from Burners' first-hand accounts. So send us your stories, and we'll publish them on Voices of Burning Man.
You can follow Tales from the Playa on the blog or on Twitter at @FromThePlaya.

How Was It for You? Burning Man Virgins Share Their Reflections
Y'all wrote excellent reflections, if we do say so ourselves. Mia writes:
"We asked others in the community to share their first-time reflections with us. Forty people from around the world did just that.
Ninety-five percent of the entries were extremely positive; negative feedback focused on things like camp commodification and other perceived violations of the 10 Principles. Common themes emerged in the responses, as you’ll see below, but within that each story is wholly its own."

Burning Confessions — My First Regional Burn (in Japan!)
Burning Man's Communications Director has a confession to make... Megan Miller writes:
"[U]ntil just a few weeks ago, I had never actually participated in a ‘regional event’. The Burning Man Regional Network of events and community leaders is growing steadily. Today there are 265 official regional contacts in 125 locations and 65 events held annually in more than 15 countries on 5 continents.
Happily, in a post Black Rock City dusty-eyed haze, I pulled myself away from day-to-day Burning Man communications long enough to experience one of them — in Japan."

Larry King Sent Me to Burning Man
Yes, that Larry King. Brandon Davis writes:
"His hug was deep and powerfully authentic. Truth resonated behind his actions, unobstructed by a need for reason. I was just a dust-covered vagabond walking through the city temple when I saw a simple man, standing and bowing with slight reverence to each person who passed through the temple and into a solemn and quiet courtyard. I walked up to him, took my hands into a prayer pose, humbly lowered my head, and then without speaking, we hugged. It lasted for ages as far as hugs go. Maybe 35 seconds. We inhaled together and when we pulled away, our eyes were brimming with the happiest tears. I didn’t know this man’s name, and I didn’t need to. He was my brother, and that was enough. I bowed again and walked back the way I came.
This desert was strange, this city was bizarre, and these citizens were peculiar. I felt right at home."

The Archaeology of Awe
What does a professional archaeologist think of Black Rock City? Turns out it fits right into ancient human patterns. Alexei Vranich writes:
"I remained perfectly still, knowing that any movement would cause the dust drifts balancing on the folds of my sleeping bag to cascade inside of it. It was my second day at Burning Man and all my possessions — from the clothing inside my backpack to the delicate gears inside my digital camera — were impregnated with the remnants of a massive dust storm. As an archaeologist, I was certainly used to less than ideal conditions, but this was not my idea of camping. Yet it was because of archaeology that I had chosen to come here in the first place during what was ostensibly my vacation."

Photo Gallery from Fish of the Pier Crew
Gorgeous gallery of the past four years from the documentarian of one of Black Rock City's greatest art crews. Fish writes:
"My name is Fish, I'm one of the members of the Pier Crew, a Resident Artist of The Generator in Reno, and the crew's pseudo documentary photographer the past few years. I've recently set up a gallery that covers four years of attendance, including three of our large scale builds, and I'd like to share it with the Burning Man community."

Video: ArtPrize Seven: ‘Why these finalists?’
Some Burning Man staffers including co-founder Crimson Rose were on the scene at ArtPrize in Michigan to help suss out the winners:
"The public and juried ArtPrize finalists have been named, but who has the right formula to win?
Art critics debated that question again Monday and Tuesday evening during 'Critical Discourse: Why These Finalists?' live on WOOD TV8. ...
Tuesday, the experts discussed the finalists in the three-dimensional and time-based categories. The critics were Sarah Schultz, an independent art curator in New York; Crimson Rose, co-founder of Burning Man; and Edward Winkleman, a writer and gallery owner in New York."

Burners Shane and Howard in Oprah Winfrey's BELIEF
 |
|
| |
Okay, Burning Man's presence in popular culture is seriously getting surreal. Howard writes:
"Burners Shane and Howard Fallon are in a documentary funded by Oprah Winfrey through her Harpo production company. In August of 2013 the part2productions film crew traveled to Black Rock Desert to document Shane and Howard as they made a pilgrimage to Burning Man in remembrance of the passing of Julee and Kendra at the Temple of Whollyness.
The BELIEF documentary aired on Oprah’s OWN channel on seven consecutive nights starting on Sunday October 18, 2015. Shane and Howard and Burning Man were featured in the episode 'Belief: A Change Is Gonna Come' which aired on Wednesday 10/21.
Shane and Howard were also on the Dr. Phil Show on Thursday October 15, 2015 on CBS. We appeared on this show with Oprah Winfrey herself and talked about our Burning Man pilgrimage and healing after our unimaginable personal loss."
We didn't get this info in time to share this before it aired, but you can find out about the show and any rerun times on Oprah.com.

Barron Scott Levkoff Seeks Photos of Mystical Midway
Barron Scott Levkoff writes:
"SEEKING: photographic or narrative/storied evidence of the MYSTIC MIDWAY's appearance at Burning Man's Carnival of Mirrors.
Got a story, pics, a testimonial or any other proof of visiting our Funhouse Labyrinth and Tent of Marvels in The Midway in Black Rock City this year?
Producing social experiences can be so ephemeral, I would greatly appreciate any of the above to go into our archives and to share with the cast & crew who worked so very hard to bring our peculiar brand of mythic social experience to ~1,100 playa citizens.
Stories and pics would greatly console us as we attempt to reclaim our possessions from the dust and heal the respiratory colds we contracted from performing in awful conditions night after night! OH THE GLAMOROUS LIFE"

Thank You for Supporting Art in Black Rock City!
Here's a big thank you to everybody who supported Burning Man projects this year ... whether it was a financial contribution, a donation, or volunteering your time and talents, the fruits of your generosity sure did show on playa! We saw more art projects in Black Rock City than ever before (over 400 installations!), including more fire art than ever (over 100 pieces!), and 650 incredible mutant vehicles.
While it does seem during the thick of the fundraising season that we're getting inundated by requests for support, the end result is that more people have the opportunity to contribute to these projects, making them truly community-generated creations. So thank you!

Bring the kids, bring your beautiful selves, and bring the spirit that makes Burning Man truly the World's Biggest Playground. Come as you are, dressed up in your Burner Best or get one more use out of that Halloween costume.
Lots of afternoon fun for all, face painting, Flow Arts Performance, bobbing for bacon (and maybe some apples as well), Burning Man coloring pages and more.

We were listening to ...
Twink — Think Pink (1970)
-
We know what kind of music that *sounds* like it's going to be, but it's actually fairly typical guitar-y psychedelic rock, only with more sex voices than usual.
Ruins — Hyderomastgroningem (1995)
-
49th best prog rock album of all time according to Rolling Stone. Japanese. Face-melting.
Kruder & Dorfmeister — DJ Kicks (1996)
-
You don't know, you better ask somebody.
