Hello there and happy Halloween! We've got a special event coming up that we want you to know about ... Larry Harvey (you may have heard of him?) will join John Perry Barlow and Peter Hirshberg at Columbia University (you may have heard of it?) for a lively philosophical symposium moderated by Dr. David Kittay. They'll discuss Burning Man and the 10 Principles, their history, and their application in the world. This has all the makings of a really interesting event.

The forum is FREE and will take place on Tuesday, November 19th from 7-9pm at Columbia University's Altschul Auditorium. The event is open to all but get there early to make sure you get a spot (or reserve your seat here:
https://burningmanspeaks.eventbrite.com/ ). So, if you're within shouting distance of New York, be there! (See details below.)

And with that ... onward to this edition of the Jackrabbit Speaks. Enjoy. :-)

The Man burns in 303 days!

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN: SCIENTISTS SHOWCASE THE WONDERS OF THE WORLD AT BURNING MAN

Yay science!

"The mobile science exhibit, known as the MicroZoo, is the brainchild of bioengineer Tristan Ursell, a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University."

http://bit.ly/19NVQjs

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

BURNING DOWN THE LIBRARY

""'Are you really going to burn books on Saturday?'" Sista Turtle Dove said. "My typical response was, 'Only if there are any left...'""

A thought-provoking story about a provocative art piece, designed to provoke and challenge your assumptions, and ... wait for it ... provoke thought. Caveat Magister in the Burning Blog:

http://bit.ly/HpfRU0

[Editor's Note: those nested quotes, while mind-boggling, are in fact correct.]

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

MY 15 YEARS WITH THAT FLAMING GUY

"The sad truth is Burning Man is becoming middle-aged and most of the wilder rumors are akin to an old athlete's embellished stories about how good it all used to be."

Long-time Media Mecca volunteer Dennis Hinkamp wrote this nice piece for High Country News (that's the western United States high country, for those of you playing at home). And here it is for you to enjoy:

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

LEARNING GENEROSITY AT BURNING MAN

"Burning Man gives me a clearer idea of how to serve in God's kingdom, because God's reign is not just what happens when you die. It is continuous with the way we live right now."

The Reverend Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young wrote this nice piece about his experience of Burning Man for the Huffington Post. (He's got some more in the hopper that we'll be sharing with you in future JRSs.)

LUMINOUS AURORA: 3D PROJECTION MAPPING ON THE TEMPLE OF WHOLLYNESS

Max Nova sent us this lovely clip:

"A phenomenon washed over The Temple of Whollyness each night, varying with different themes, all centered around ancient knowledge. This project marks the first year that 3D projection mapping has ever been seen on the Temple at Burning Man.

3:59 OF PLAYA MOMENTS

Sockaplaya sent us this love note:

"For the 11th consecutive year Black Rock City re-energized me once again with the power to believe that people can do amazing things. I wrote the score synced with these images to bring a sense of love, strength and energy to try and express how each year at Burning Man has made me stronger.

BRING BURNING MAN ART TO THE REAL WORLD: SUPPORT THE AURORA IN PALO ALTO PROJECT

Do you remember the Aurora sculpture from 2011? Hoo boy, we sure do. (Here, this will jog your memory: http://bit.ly/1is6xKl) So yeah, let's help get it placed in the real world, right?! The Aurora Team writes:

"WHAT?
For one afternoon, we are turning Palo Alto's City Hall Plaza into [City Hall] Playa! Come see the lighting ceremony for Aurora - a 35 foot LED tree sculpture designed and built by Charles Gadeken for Burning Man.

All Burners are invited to bring their loved ones to this family-friendly event. The ceremony will be Saturday, November 16, from 3:00-7:00pm with the tree lighting at 6pm.

WHY?
Aurora is a fairy tree that re-ignites our childhood imaginations, full of wonder and endless possibility. The opalescent willow has over 40,000 LED lights and hand-beaten copper leaves that chime in the wind. It will be on display at Palo Alto's City Hall for one year beginning November 16.

This amazing project was spearheaded by two audacious kids whose father shared photos of Aurora with them after a trip to the playa. They were so inspired by the work that - at 8 and 6 years old - they petitioned the city of Palo Alto to bring this amazing piece of art to the denizens of the city.

Please contribute to this incredible project that will bring the beauty and joy we all find on the Playa to an urban environment.

YOUTH EDUCATIONAL SPACESHIP LANDS IN VEGAS - LAS VEGAS, NV - NOV 15-DEC 8

The Youth Educational Spaceship (Y.E.S.) project is landing in Las Vegas! Y.E.S. is a mobile spaceship classroom built from repurposed and found objects by artist Dana Albany, together with kids from San Francisco's Tenderloin and Hunters Point neighborhoods. This collaborative art program for youth gives them time and space to create, participate, and then exhibit their work, while engaging children in hands-on experience focusing on art and technology.

Y.E.S. will be open to the public at the Learning Village, 727 Fremont Street, starting Friday November 15, with a variety of family-friendly programming including spaceship tours, mosaic workshops with recycled materials, wiring demos and interactive robotic demos, culminating in a closing ceremony and children's art show on December 8. For more information about programming, please visit: https://ticketcake.com/venue/learning-village/las-vegas.

This program is a collaboration between Burning Man Project (www.burningmanproject.org) and Las Vegas' Downtown Project (www.downtownproject.com).

HOW TO UNSTUCK A STUCK ZIPPER

OK, here's a dumb one. But when you reeeeally have to pee, and you're struggling like mad to get that super playafied tent zipper to open, you'll be like "damn, I should've listened to the Jackrabbit!" (As you pee yourself.)

Put some Chapstick on a stuckified zipper to unstuckify it. You can also use olive oil.

Bam. This is us, loving you and your craptastic zippers.

Now, a slew of superlative people attend Burning Man each year (and YOU are no exception!), we all know that. But we were especially pleased to learn this year's winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, Michael Levitt, is a Burner! We've got the story on the Burning Blog: http://bit.ly/H52xDk

Back on the ranch, we've got info on Regional events in Seattle, Shanghai and Second Life. Wait...what was that last one? Yes, BURN2 takes place online in Second Life October 19-27. No matter where you live, grab an avatar and head out to the virtual playa! Details below.

Lastly, Burning Man Project is hosting a talk with Charles Eisenstein, (author of Sacred Economics), temple-builder David Best and artist Joshua Coffy, titled "The Gift: From Economy to Cosmology" October 28 @ 6 p.m., in Petaluma, CA. If you're in the area, don't miss it. We've got details below, or visit http://bit.ly/19qkDbO.

THE 2013 NOBEL PRIZE WINNER IN CHEMISTRY IS A BURNER

Congratulations to Michael Levitt, professor of structural biology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He was awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work in the 1970′s "for the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems." Why does this matter to you? Well, Michael, it turns out, is a Burner! We are not entirely surprised.

TALES OF DRONES

Award-winning writer Susan Karlin wrote about drones on playa. Here's a snippet: "Burning Man is known for flouting rules, not making them. But the advent of drones hovering above 70,000 scantily clad revelers has engaged a balancing act between freedom of expression, safety, and privacy. How Burning Man regulates their use is now being studied by local law enforcement and government agencies as a template for how they can be regulated in society."

Here it is in Fast Company: http://bit.ly/1aq7AWQ

She wrote another piece and it went in IEEE Spectrum: http://bit.ly/173IcLq

Finally, she recorded a story about drones too, which aired on KCRW (LA's NPR affiliate): http://bit.ly/GRG6lh

CHRIS GUEST FROZE BURNERS

This is pretty rad ... you might find yourself holding your breath once in a while. Chris writes:

"Inspired by the Burning Man principle of 'Immediacy', or 'being in the moment,' I had the idea of 'freezing' people I met there in their moment, using a camera effect called 'Bullet time', which is like on the Matrix where it looks like the camera is moving while the subject is somehow frozen in time.

So for the last six months or so I'd been working on a way to create this effect from just one camera and a handheld contraption that I invented and called 'The Camapult'. This short film is the result and is my gift to the amazing people that took part: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bje0I_hdi-8 "

BURN2 CARGO CULT - SECOND LIFE - OCT 19-27

Super Suz wants to geek out with you:

"What happens when a real-world event transcends the bounds of the virtual world and takes its experience into another realm? Welcome to BURN2, your virtual Burning Man!

What is BURN2? Burning Man's ONLY officially sanctioned virtual regional! Who attends BURN2? Participants who want to share the unique experience of Burning Man and its culture in an easily accessible, 3-D, virtual environment. Anyone can attend, anyone can experience, and anyone can enjoy! Many of the events you will see at Burning Man you will see here, too! And without the heat and dust! (Turn up your furnace and put up a fan in front of a kitty litter box if you need that.)

Get a free avatar and walk around the 97-acre BURN2 playa; experience art installations and participate in theme camps. Dance and drum to the beats of the Lamplighters as they light the city's lanterns at dusk. Interact with Rangers, Greeters, and other participants from all around the world. Dance to live DJ's. Participate in poetry workshops. Drive mutant vehicles or visit elaborate porta potties. Write messages in the Temple. Watch the Man burn! There's plenty of ways to participate!

For Burners new to Second Life, visit www.burn2.org and check out the links on the right-hand side. The first link will get you set up with an avatar. Avatars are free, and most people learn basic navigation skills fairly easily. The second link will transport you to the virtual playa. Just click that link, and then the 'Visit This Location' button, and whoosh!

Need more help? Join the BurningMan 2.0 group once in Second Life, introduce yourself, and ask our friendly community for assistance. Or, email info@burn2.org. Be sure to include your avatar name if you've set one up.

Can't wait to see you on the 'playa' Oct. 19-27!"

GOOP - GIFTING OUT OF PLACE

You know how when somebody gives you a gift, and you feel obligated to accept it, even if it's not something you want or need? Maybe you don't want to hurt the giver's feelings, right? Right.

Whether it's a physical object or not, not every gift is a wanted gift. Be a good gifter! Be cognizant of your recipient's feelings as you are making your offering, and do a gut check that you're not GOOPing.

But please ... don't take it from us. Some of the best thinking on the subject of gifting has been done by our friend Halcyon. Seriously, this is good stuff ... check it out: http://bit.ly/1aq9F59

Hello folks! Decompression season is coming fast and furious -- and around the world -- much to our delight. We've got information on the San Francisco, San Diego, Toronto and Sacramento events... with more to come. In the meantime, find your nearest one here on the Regional Events Calendar: http://regionals.burningman.com/events/

Our wonderful (and way overworked) tech team has launched a spiffy new Image Gallery, and it's SUPER SWEET. It's a good place to send the Burn-curious if they want to get a quick, surface-level gist of the mind-blowing spectacle that is Burning Man. We've got details about how to use it below, but if you JUST CAN'T WAIT, fine, here ya go:

http://galleries.burningman.com

We love you guys, and yeah, we miss you too.

The Man burns in 330 days!

ANNOUNCING THE NEW BURNING MAN IMAGE GALLERIES!

We're excited to announce the launch of our new image galleries, featuring the finest photos taken throughout Burning Man's history. And they're BEAUTIFUL.

http://galleries.burningman.com

Search for photographs, artifacts or illustrations from any year, across a number of categories (http://galleries.burningman.com/pages/themes.php), by popularity, contributor, keyword, or click "surprise me!" to throw the dice. You can even search by color! Feel free to add your comments, enhancing them with stories about the shot, or the moment captured (ahem, comment policy: http://blog.burningman.com/comment-policy/).

The galleries have powerful features photographers and researchers are gonna LOVE, and we'll be telling you more about those soon. But two we're particularly psyched about are batch-upload and auto-resizing features ... making it substantially easier to add photos.

Want to submit photographs? Learn how:
http://galleries.burningman.com/plugins/burningman/pages/faq.php#contribute

Got questions? Read our FAQ:
http://galleries.burningman.com/plugins/burningman/pages/faq.php

This pairs with the new Burning Man video gallery, which we told you about over the summer:
http://galleries.burningman.com/plugins/burningman/pages/video.php

PLAYA RESTORATION 2013 WRAPS UP! WELL, MOSTLY

The Hun has been diligently chronicling the Playa Restoration team's progress as they made their way across what was Black Rock City, picking up the tiny remaining bits of Burning Man detritus. You can read her entire series here:

http://blog.burningman.com/tag/moop-map-live-2013/

Well, they wrapped up their work -- despite freezing daytime temperatures, wind and more -- only to have the scheduled BLM inspection postponed due to the US government shutdown. It was disappointing to the Resto crew and BLM folks who were going to conduct the inspection October 2, but rest assured it'll happen -- it's just a matter of when.

In the meantime, ALL HAIL THE PLAYA RESTORATION CREW!

Lastly, is your camp showing up Yellow or Red? Are you freaking out? Well, we have a special message for you in our Black Rock City Civics section below.

GLOBAL DIGITAL PREMIERE OF "SPARK: A BURNING MAN STORY"

Ignite.me is hosting the fabulous documentary "SPARK: A Burning Man Story", the one that that The New York Times heralds as "An oasis of creativity."

It's available for online rental or purchase, which is fantastic for those of you who've been wondering when it would be swinging through your town ... well, now it is! Check it out:

THE JACKRABBIT SPEAKS ... BUT NOT *THAT* MUCH

Thank you, yes YOU, for taking the time to send us your Burning Man photo galleries and blog posts. They warm our hearts in the winter doldrums and inspire us to keep creating and participating in the phenomenon that is Black Rock City.

You may wonder why we didn't include your post in the Jackrabbit Speaks. We received hundreds (yes, hundreds) of posts and links. We have pretty strict guidelines around what we do and don't post. Before submitting, we ask you to consider:

~ Imagine your audience is nearly 200,000 Burners across the globe. Most won't be in your area the weekend of your event. The Regionals have a robust network of email lists, though. Go to http://regionals.burningman.com and find your local list. Your local rep will be more than happy to promote your (relevant to their community) event!

~ We like to keep the JRS family-friendly for our diverse audience. A stray racy photo (use your best judgment) in your photo gallery may keep it from being included.

~ Writing about Burning Man 'niche' experiences or specific camps is wonderful, and you should keep doing it. Post widely to social networks and your own websites. There are a multitude of venues other than this newsletter that will connect you to your readership. Try http://eplaya.burningman.com to reach out!

We love that you're inspired. In a perfect world we could post everything submitted. But we can't. Please don't take it personally ... it's not you, it's us.

MY BURNING MAN PROJECT FAILED!

Ever had a Burning Man project (ambitious or otherwise) utterly fail? You're the first! (Just kidding. No, you're not.) It happens to the best of us ... pretty much all of us, really. Molly Ditmore shares her fail stories, and we invite YOU to confess yours. Plenty of folks already have, and they're a hoot to read. Enjoy:

WHAT IF MY ART PROJECT IS A LOADED GUN?

"We know that an engineer who knowingly builds a structure that can hurt people is morally culpable. As is someone who deliberately offers contaminated food. But what about an artist who realizes that his work … by creating a powerfully aesthetic experience … is potentially causing emotional trauma? Does he have anything to answer for?"

Another brilliant and thought-provoking piece of writing from Caveat Magister in the Burning Blog:

BURNING MAN EPIPHANY MAKES FOR BETTER PIZZA

SO MANY LOST BICYCLES ...

Runs With Scissors has a cool project:

"It happens frequently: in the worst situation, you may find yourself exhausted after a party in deep playa - and the bicycle you were planning to ride back on is no where to be found, but a mangled wreck with a broken chain has been left as a sorry replacement. There are stories of people who have bicycles taken from racks in the backs of their camps on the first day and there are stories of people lifting whole clumps of chained bicycles and putting them into trucks.

The trouble is that I only have stories and I want real statistics. I want to build a map that tells me where the most likely place is for a bicycle to be lost. I want to know what the qualities are of a bicycle is that makes it more likely to disappear.

If we have enough data points, we can learn when and where we need to protect ourselves and how to prevent this from happening to ourselves. If you have ever had a bicycle disappear, please take the time to fill out the quick survey below.

MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO DECODE THE BRC 2013 MAP

From Oracle Machine Systems, L.T.D

"It has come to our attention that certain activities prevented you from deciphering our message during that long week you spent in the desert. It is not too late to find the truth. Take a look at that map you received and untangle the information buried there. More information will be available throughout the day at Playa Info during Decompression. A brief Q&A session will take place near the Playa Info table at 5 p.m. If you are not able to attend but think you have the solution, check in on the Twitter feed of @cultofthehat after October 13th."

OMG MY CAMP IS *RED* ON THE MOOP MAP!! I'M FREAKING OUT!!

It happens every year. The Playa Restoration Team publishes the annual MOOP Map http://blog.burningman.com/tag/moop-map-live-2013 and people whose camps are Yellow (bad) or Red (way bad) freak the f*ck OUT. They'll abjectly panic, gnashing teeth, rending garments, flailing on the ground, speaking in tongues -- you get the idea.

We're here to tell you, it's OK. We still love you ... we really do. Nobody's going to blackball you from the playa (unless you're like really *really* REALLY bad on a consistent basis). All we (and your fellow participants) ask is that you learn from your mistakes, and do it better next time. Strive for Green!

To that end, here are some tips from participants who are doin' it right about how to make that happen ... it all starts with designating a dedicated LNT Czar for your camp to plan ahead:
