Greetings all, and happy holidays! We're pretty darn sure this will be our last JRS of the (calendar) year, though we just might crank one more out before it's all said and done. (There's big news burbling just underfoot, and it depends on how things go in the next couple weeks.)
We've got your usual variety of bits and bobs from around the Burning Man universe, and we'd especially like to point your attention to our end-of-year donation program for the Burning Man Project. The Project has had a productive 2013 working on a number of projects and programs to spread the Burner ethos around the world (From the playa to the planet! Catchy, right?).
In fact, we have a post in the Burning Blog highlighting some of their most recent activities (http://blog.burningman.com/?p=28843)... and we're looking forward to a lot more in 2014.
Oh and did you notice this JRS looks a little different? New subject line? New "from" name? Yep, well we've changed email systems to one that will make your subscribe, unsubscribe and preference-setting world a LOT easier. And soon ... it'll be prettier. Hooray for that!
We hope your holidays are GREAT.
The Man burns in 254 days!

WHAT'S UP WITH THE BURNING MAN PROJECT?
What's the Burning Man Project been up to lately? A lot, actually. We've got a number of pots on the stove, some small, some large ... some that are quick to make happen, and some that are focused on long-term results.
We've captured a handful of highlights from the last half of this year (this is only a sampling ... the full compliment can be found at www.burningmanproject.org).
Check it out!
http://blog.burningman.com/?p=28843
This is cool, right? Does this excite you? Get your juices flowing? If so, please help us (continue to) bring the playa to the planet! Make a donation to the Burning Man Project (see below)!

MAKE A YEAR-END DONATION TO THE BURNING MAN PROJECT
The mission of the nonprofit Burning Man Project is to bring the values and learning from Black Rock City to the place it is most needed: our everyday lives. We envision a world in which self-expression is the norm, where gifting is a daily practice, and participation is enthusiastic and frequent. And that's why we are asking for your contribution to help Burning Man's expansion from the playa to the planet.
More and more academic institutions, nonprofits, businesses and municipalities are looking to learn from the Burning Man experience. They're eager to discover how we build community and sustainability, and to learn why this powerful movement has such life-changing impact. And we are eager to share it with them. To that end, we are busy developing an online learning portal, lectures, philosophical discussions, and demonstration projects to give everybody access to Burning Man ideas, values, and resources -- worldwide and year-round.
While a portion of Burning Man's ticket sales help sustain Burning Man Project's efforts, realizing its full potential will require resources well beyond that. So we are asking for a contribution of ANY SIZE to help us share the Burner ethos. If you've always thought the world should be more like Black Rock City, then this is your chance ... if you can make a donation, we can make a difference.
All donations are fully tax deductible to the extent allowable by law. If you are able to donate $150 or more, we are offering a choice of two Burnerific gifts: the beautiful 2014 Burning Man wall calendar, or a cozy charcoal grey jersey scarf hand-screened with the Burning Man Project logo. We can also accept recurring donations. To donate and choose your gift, please click here:

BURNING MAN'S MARKETPLACE CLOSING TEMPORARILY
Fair warning, we'll be closing down the Marketplace area of our website for revamping, starting December 31. The whole process should take roughly a month, so if all goes well (fingers crossed), it'll be back in February. When it's up and running we'll let you know in the JRS, of course.
Marketplace? Yeah, it's true. You might not have noticed since we don't exactly 'market' the marketplace, it but there is a spot for purchasing Burning Man schwag on the website. From now until December 31st it can be found here: http://marketplace.burningman.com/

THE CHURCH TRAP ORGAN LIVES ON AT THE SPRING ARTS TOWER IN DOWNTOWN LA
Would you believe that Rebekah Waites, creator of "The Church Trap", was a first time Burner this year? Yeah, we had a hard time grokking that ourselves. StuPENDOUS work, especially for a first-timer. Bravo! Rebekah writes:
"Rebekah Waites and the Church Trap Crew are very excited about the opportunity to display the Church Trap organ inside the mezzanine lobby of the Spring Arts Tower in Downtown Los Angeles for the next few months.
If you find yourself in the LA area from now until May please stop by and say hello. The organ is located at:
The Spring Arts Tower
Mezzanine Lobby
453 S. Spring Street
Los Angeles, CA 90013
When you're there you can also stop by Church Trap Lead Artist Jena Priebe's Curio Shop and art gallery which is located upstairs.

We look forward to seeing you!"

BRIAN GOGGIN'S "CARUSO'S DREAM" TAKES FLIGHT
"Caruso's Dream" is a joint production of Goggin and Dorka Keehn, the team that brought the celebrated "Language of the Birds," an installation of blinking books, to the corner of Broadway and Columbus in San Francisco.
The $750,000 commission for this project came through a nationwide competition of 40 artists, organized by the Black Rock Arts Foundation, which started at Burning Man but now focuses on creating urban art experiences outside the desert.

HELP BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS THRIVE IN 2014!
Hurricane Katrina hit during the Burning Man event in 2005 and many participants were inspired to gather up the supplies they were using to survive on the playa to help those in need on the Gulf Coast. Through the act of gifting $1 million in debris removal to Katrina survivors, Burners Without Borders was born and has continued to thrive today due to this community's commitment to creating a better world.
Over the years, your generous support and participation has enabled this incredibly creative community to accomplish so much. Just this year, BWB has gifted over $3 million in debris removal after Hurricane Sandy and helped marginalized artists in Haiti start their own businesses. Through these and many other projects BWB is making a difference, and we couldn't have done it without you.
As we look to 2014, we have BIG plans, and BWB needs your help to make them possible. To support the continued success of BWB, please donate here:
http://bit.ly/1cRFMPK
Any amount that you can give will go a long way in helping us make a difference in 2014!
If you can donate $150 or more, you will receive a one-of-a-kind custom printed T-shirt, thanks to the donated printing talents of our friends at Remixed Ink. Each high-quality, hand-pressed, custom shirt will contain a print of the 'Temple of Wholyness' and your choice of either 'Truth Is Beauty' or the 'Coyote' art installations from Burning Man 2013.
Shirts will be delivered to you by February 15. You can check out the designs and information about how to receive your thank you gift here at the BWB website:

Our Burner friends in Wisconsin say:
"We heard so many good comments about Saturnalia 2012, we realized we had to do it again. We will have:
Grapes, olives, figs and dates on platters, cakes in the shape of fertility symbols, crowns of leaves and vines, lots of wine, the horse race dice game, erotic poetry of Sappho, videos and images of the ancient world, lots of candles, dancing of the Muses, ancient Roman-esque party music, and purification with sage.

Sorry for the intrusion. In this morning's JRS, we gave you the wrong link for making a year-end donation to the Burning Man Project. While the original one would let you make a donation, it wouldn't hook you up with nifty "thank you" gifts for donations over $150. Here's the correct link (we made extra sure this time):

OH MY GOD IT'S FREAKING *COLD*. Is it cold where you are? We hear it is. And while we're admittedly complete weather wussies here in the Bay Area, this time it's seriously legit cold, and we're taking the opportunity to *really* whine.
So Larry just walked by our desk and told us the art theme for Burning Man 2014 will be "'Sup?". But we don't believe him. The real theme will be released soon ... very … soon. We're told by the end of the year, so hold tight.
Speaking of the end of the year, if you've got some money rattling around in your pockets, and are looking for a good (tax deductible) way to put it to good use, consider an end-of-year donation to the nonprofit Burning Man Project ... help facilitate Burning Man's expansion from the playa to the planet! See below for details.
Since it's so dang cold, we've served up a solid serving of quality reading material in this JRS, so you can snuggle up under something cozy and wrap your mind around some warm playa memories.

Commerce & Community: Distilling Philosophy From a Cup of Coffee
by Larry Harvey
"When most people say that any thing or act is too commercial or has been commercialized, very few of them mean to say that the practice of commerce is necessarily bad. Instead, they are expressing the feeling that something essential — something that should never be bought and sold — has been commodified. This is why we have always been careful to use the words 'commodify' and 'decommodify'."

TEMPLE FOR CHRISTCHURCH
Kyle Kastner writes:
This video documents the story of the Temple of Christchurch from the start of construction through to the burn. Based on the Temple concept from the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada, this project sought to offer a place for the community to reflect on and process their thoughts and experiences from the devastating February 2011 earthquake. Built using recycled timber from quake-demolished homes, this piece occupied one of the hundreds of vacant lots in the heart of downtown Christchurch. Citizens were asked to come share their thoughts and emotions on the walls of the structure, which was eventually disassembled and taken out of the city for the ceremonial burn.

I brought camera equipment modified to capture images not only of the visible light spectrum we see everyday, but, also in the Infrared and Ultraviolet. This technique is commonly used for scientific applications such as photographing objects in space. It allowed me to see events in unique ways possibly no one else did. Additionally, I briefly animated a few of the situations where I was shooting is rapid succession.

Teddy Lo, the author, is an artist and Burner from Hong Kong, who brought the mutant vehicle/dragon Gon Kirin, featured in the book, to the playa in 2012.
Back in 2008, Teddy asked me to put together a section on LED art at Burning Man, which I did with Louis Brill; seven of our LED artists are featured in the book: Mark Lottor, Michael Light, Tim Black, Scott Gasparian, Chris Schardt, Jeremy Lutes, and Jared Gallardo.
There's also a chapter on Leo Villareal, and one on Anakin Koenig (aka The Eye), of Disorient, and his inflatable LED projects, including the big orange Disorient cone.
Also - the current edition of Sculpture Magazine features an interview with Leo Villareal: http://sculpture.org/documents/scmag13/nov_13/nov13.shtml.
Leo speaks at length about going to Burning Man back in the mid-90's and being inspired to created LED art by the darkness and disorienting nature of the playa."

PRELIMINARY 2014 TICKETING INFO
We know you've been awaiting information about tickets for Burning Man 2014, but the plan hasn't been finalized. Why the delay? We haven't finalized agreements with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for the 2014 permit.
So while we don't have all of the details, here's some info to help you plan:
1) There will be a Pre-Sale, but it will not happen until mid-January. As in the past, this sale will only offer the highest priced tickets.
2) The full ticketing plan for 2014 will be announced in early January on tickets.burningman.com
3) While details are still pending, our intention is to repeat the basic process and structure from 2013: all of our ticket sales will require pre-registration through the Burner Profile system, there will be a Pre-Sale, a Directed Group Sale, an Individual Sale, a late-season OMG Sale, and we will again offer the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) and our Low Income Ticket Program. We are also striving to keep ticket prices as in line with 2013 as possible. While all of this is still subject to final changes, know that this is our aim.
In December of 2012 the Pre-Sale designated a percentage of the income to the nonprofit Burning Man Project. By not having this sale in December of 2013 we're missing the opportunity to make this useful year-end donation to the Project. The leadership of the LLC are in the final stages of negotiating and completing the transaction that will make Black Rock City, LLC a subsidiary of the Project. Now more than ever the Project needs your support. Please consider making a donation to the Project as you look at your year-end contributions. You can donate online here:

PLEASE NOTE: In order to be eligible interns MUST be receiving official school credit. Prior to beginning an internship with Burning Man, candidates must provide written proof that credit will be received from the relevant educational institution.

THE BURNING MAN CALENDAR MAKES A GREAT HOLIDAY GIFT
Screw Black Friday, Saturday localwhatever, Cyber Monday and all that ... put your money where your heart is. Pick up a Burning Man 2013/14 wall calendar for your gifting pleasure this holiday season (order before December 9 to be sure it gets to you in time). It includes tons of gorgeous Burning Man photography.
http://bit.ly/16bLSKa
But wait ... isn't that ... COMMERCIAL? *gasp*
Not really. We make this calendar every year so YOU can have a chunk of Burning Man memories tacked to your wall throughout the year -- it's a cultural conveyance. Do we make money on it? Once all the costs are calculated, barely. So don't feel like you have to take a shower after clicking "buy". It's all good.

CROWDFUNDING: TRENDS IN THE SHARING ECONOMY - SAN FRANCISCO, CA - DECEMBER 12
Please join us for this special discussion on December 12 at Burning Man Headquarters!
Crowdfunding: Trends in the Sharing Economy
The sharing economy is taking off – whether it's peer-to-peer rentals, skill sharing, crowdfunding, ridesharing or unused parking spots. Spawned by a confluence of the economic crisis, environmental concerns, and the social web coming of age, the sharing economy is quickly becoming the hottest trend in economic paradigms.
We in the Burning Man community are particularly interested in the dynamics and the future of the sharing economy, since it reflects our principles of gifting, communal effort, civic responsibility and decommodification.
Please join us for a panel discussion focused specifically on the future of crowdfunding, one of the fastest-developing areas in the sharing economy. We will explore the role it plays in creative community development, and how it's being applied to entrepreneurial endeavors in the form of spaces (local real estate) and support for small businesses (micro loans).
When: December 12, 7-9pm
Where: Burning Man HQ
Address: 660 Alabama Street, San Francisco
Panelists:
Daniel Miller, Fundrise
Harry Pottash, Kiva
Kate Drane, Indiegogo
Moderator:
Will Chase, Burning Man Project

Wow, we've got some big news to serve up in this JRS ... things just started cranking, converging and concluding all at once this week, and BAM -- there ya go. Big news week. It happens.
First off, we've launched our new 10 Principles blog series, cornerstone to the Burning Man Project's Philosophical Center program. We've been working on this for a while now, and we're excited that it's finally ready to go ... and YOU are invited to participate in this ongoing exploration of the dynamics of the 10 Principles in Black Rock City and year-round! Check it out: http://blog.burningman.com/10principles
Second, we passed our BLM site inspection on Wednesday! Sa-weet! That means we get to host Burning Man on the Black Rock Desert again next year. (For you first-timers, if we FAIL to leave no trace, then our site permit doesn't get approved for the next year ... and that? Would be bad. This shiznit's for real, folks.)
Finally (and not really finally, because there's always more), we reached a settlement in our lawsuit with Pershing County, and we're pretty happy about that, the outcome, and the fact that we can put it behind us and focus on planning for next year's shindig.
Details on all the above, below.
The Man burns in 288 days!

BURNING MAN PASSES 2013 BLM SITE INSPECTION!!
And guess what that means? Well first off, it means YOU ROCK, since you kicked some serious booty in the Leave No Trace department this year, folks. Secondly, it means we can once again return to the Black Rock Desert to make the magic that is Black Rock City. So we'll see you there in 2014, right? Right.
Big thanks (again) to YOU for your LNT efforts, and to the Playa Restoration Crew (aka "Resto") for sticking around long after we all left, working hard to keep the playa beautiful.

BURNING MAN LAUNCHES 10 PRINCIPLES BLOG SERIES, PHILOSOPHICAL CENTER
Representing the cornerstone of Burning Man Project's Philosophical Center, we are proud to present the 10 Principles blog series, an ongoing exploration of the values that have grown out of the Burning Man community.
http://blog.burningman.com/10principles
This series will include a wide variety of posts delving into the philosophical underpinnings of the 10 Principles, how they manifest in the real world (including the challenges they face when the rubber hits the road), and how they challenge and inform one another when they conflict.
You can expect written word, audio, video, photography and -- with your participation -- spirited dialog!
We'll highlight certain posts periodically in the JRS, and we encourage you to join the conversation with your thoughtful insights about the 10 Principles, your experience of them, and their role in your life. Please join us!

I just want to let you know that Homouroboros, By Peter Hudson — originally commissioned by Burning Man for 2007 with a playa encore at this year's event — has come to San Francisco's Exploratorium where it is available from 10am to 10pm every day, until at least the end of November and perhaps longer. The monkeys are in our free public plaza area.
On behalf of the Exploratorium (where my day job is) I cannot begin to express how excited we are about this.
Since this installation is co-presented by the Exploratorium and the Black Rock Arts Foundation, I'd also like to just let you know how grateful we are to BRAF for supporting this (and by extension to all of the lovely BRAF supporters out there in the community) for giving us this opportunity.
Warmest Regards,
Melissa Alexander
Director of Public Programs
Exploratorium"

Is Burning Man a religious experience? Reverend Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young thinks so. Here's his (really good) article about it in the Huffington Post:

BALLOON CHAIN PROJECT SHORT DOCUMENTARY (ALSO, DO YOU KNOW THIS COUPLE?)
"This year at the burn I created a short film about the Balloon Chain project. The film came out great, but that's not why I am posting. See, we did balloons for a wedding and I shot some really terrific footage of the celebration that I included in the film. The couple looks so happy and I would love to get them to see it. Problem is, I have no idea who they are! I gave my information to the still photographer, but never heard anything.
Here is a link to the video: http://vimeo.com/76786641
At about the three minute mark is where the wedding scene is. I think they were there with an art car, the Land Yacht. You know the one I am talking about, huge ocean liner on wheels that's all neon at night? Killer car. Anyway, that's all I know about who they may have been with. I could be wrong.
Any ideas or leads would be great. jared.brian.morgan@gmail.com I would love to share the footage with them. Thanks everyone!
- Jared"

VIDEO OF THE MERKABA PROJECT AT BURNINGMAN 2013 BY MICHAEL EMERY AND CREW
Michael writes:
"The MerKaBa Project is a video and sculptural installation designed for and debuted on the playa at BurningMan 2013. The sculptural centerpiece is a hexagonal 9' tall onion dome fabricated from 12 gauge steel. The dome has been plasma cut with a complex fractal pattern. Within the dome a 7" tall hexagonal mirrored obelisk turns. The dome contains an amplifier playing a looping soundtrack. The dome is also fitted with 12 infrared sensors which when activated trigger over 200 small sound files which play on top of the sound track. At night 6 LCD projectors project an hour long hallucinatory dreamscape video montage. On the playa, the video and sound montages looped and played for the duration of each night.

PLEASE SUPPORT BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS' HAIYAN RELIEF EFFORT
Want to help the Philippines? Burners Without Borders Executive Director Carmen Mauk writes:
"BWB volunteers landed in the hardest hit area of the Philippines yesterday. They are creating order from chaos by running the logistics for a hospital command station and working to clear debris to welcome more volunteers. As you can imagine it's messy, dangerous work, and they are getting a lot done with very few resources.
In the wake of the largest typhoon in recorded history, you might ask what you can do to help given the scale of this unprecedented mass devastation.
You can significantly impact the relief effort by supporting BWB's targeted relief operations. In the next months it will be crucial for the right people to be on the ground to manage the immense logistical challenges to ensure the relief response doesn't cause unnecessary suffering for those survivors who have already lost everything.
Seasoned BWB disaster relief volunteers will continue to deploy within the next week to bring their unique rapid response logistics skills to support the relief effort. You can help.
Your support at this time is crucial and will enable us to make an impact now as well as in the future as the rebuilding phase begins.
Please keep up with our progress at the BWB website and DONATE HERE to support our relief efforts:
