EVENTS & HAPPENINGS:

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Right about now's the time Burners look at a calendar, then at a project, then at a spreadsheet, and proceed to freak the f*ck out because Burning Man is right around the corner!! GAAAH!! Yeeeeah, we feel ya.

OK, in other less panicky news, this last weekend was a doozie in the ever-growing world of global Burning Man regional events. The 14th annual Burning Flipside event did its thing down in Texas, Serendipity happened in Tennessee, and there was Forgotten City V out near Las Vegas ... it's all happening, people!

And coming up in a couple weeks is Israel's Midburn, Holos in Alaska, Lakes of Fire in Michigan, Apogaea in Colorado, Soulfire in the South Bay Area, Freezer Burn in Alberta ...

Are we global? Are we everywhere? All signs point to yes.

The Man burns in 92 days (so ... how you feelin'?)!

Registration Deadline for Art Installations is June 11

Maria Partridge, Burning Man's Artist Advocate writes:

"Are you thinking about bringing your art to the playa? Last year we had around 380 art projects on the playa, and 50 were walk-ins. If you would like to be placed - get your questions answered - receive emotional support - now is the time to register!

Find out what you need to know right here. Then, after you have filled out the questionnaire, you will get a phone call to discuss your project! If everyone waits until the last minute - well - let's just say the conversations get shorter!!!

Looking forward to chatting with you!

Playa Events Directory Opens for Submissions June 12

Are you planning on throwing a Tantric Unicorn Henna Tattoo Contest & Spank-a-Thon at your Burning Man camp this year?

Great! The form to submit your playa events to the Playa Events Directory (part of the Playa Info Directory) will be open for business starting on June 12, so get 'em ready!

The submission form will be available up to the Burning Man event, but only events submitted before July 1 (or the first 960 received, whichever comes first) will also be included in the What Where When guide, the printed playa events listing that's handed out at the Greeters' Station.

Honorarium Art Projects for 2014

We've put up all the honorarium art projects on burningman.com for your viewing pleasure ... take a look at some of the art you can expect to see in Black Rock City this year (including the Temple of Grace!)!

Call for Submissions (#2): The 2014 Burner Resource Page

In our efforts to help our community help itself, and to support the cottage industry that's grown up around our little shindig in the desert, we'll be publishing our Burning Man Resource Listing again this year. So, if you're a Burner-owned or Burner-oriented business and would like to offer your wares to the Burners everywhere, fill out this form by Wednesday June 25.

We will create a webpage of all submissions that don't violate copyright, trademark or other laws, and publicize it to our community starting on July 1. Late submissions will not be considered for publication ... no exceptions. We reserve the right NOT to publish anything we deem inappropriate.

And remember ... Burning Man is NOT anti-commerce. We're against commodification, which is quite a different thing (to wit: "our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising."). We recognize that commerce makes the world go around, and we believe in the creativity and drive of small business owners. Those are the folks we seek to support here, in the face of mass market consumerism. Keepin' it in the family. So, participating businesses ... thank you for serving and supporting our community!

Global [freespace] Movement to Hack the 2014 World Cup

Jon Mitchell covers the latest with the (now global) [freespace] movement -- one of the closest approximations of Burning Man out in the world happening today. Here's an excerpt:

"[freespace]'s first birthday is June 1. It launched as part of the National Day of Civic Hacking, which takes place this year on May 31. Last year, the founders of [freespace] said, screw it, let’s do a whole Month of Civic Hacking. They opened the doors of [freespace] San Francisco that month, and amazing things ensued. The prototype [freespace] ended up running for three months with crowd-funded rent money. The model gathered international attention, and now it’s time to level up."

Play the Groovik's Cube!

Groovik’s Cube, a reincarnation of a 2009 playa installation, is now on display as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the invention of the Rubik’s Cube in Jersey City. You can actually play the 26-foot-high light-up cube live via webcam from the Groovik’s Cube website. How cool is that?

Here's Jon Mitchell's report on the Burning Blog, including a super cool video of the Cube being made.

Duane Hoover's TEDx Talk About Art and Experience at Burning Man

Duane Hoover (aka Big Bear) worked with the Black Rock Rangers for yeeeears and is now an education and legal affairs consultant for Burning Man. He's also the Professor of Practice at Texas Tech University's Rawls College of Business. He's a good 'un. He writes:

"In this TEDx talk at Texas Tech University, Duane Hoover uses photos from the 2013 Burning Man event to educate his audience on how art expression can create a transformative personal experience through art consumption. He discusses how artists can create a 'space' within their artwork with the intent that people transform that 'space' into a 'place' by imbuing it with purpose and personalized meaning.

The result is a touching explanation of the impact of Burning Man and the art of Burning Man on the citizens of Black Rock City."

Writer Looking for Interesting Science Research at Burning Man 2014

Science! Julian writes:

"I’m looking for scientists and/or researchers who plan to do fieldwork at Burning Man this year. I write and edit for a lot of national science publications, and ever since I first went (2008) I've wanted to write in depth about the science-y side of it.

This could involve just about any discipline: archaeology, anthropology, sociology, economics, business, religious studies, geography. You name it, as long as it’s real academic research based on fieldwork at the festival itself.

Bonus points if the work a) involves high-tech methods like drones for digital mapping, etc, or b) relates to the larger study of large temporary settlements, like slums or religious festivals. But those aren’t critical.

Email me! Thanks.

Julian Smith"

Your Burner App Data is Waiting in the Innovation Lobby

This just in from the Burning Man Tech Team! (Also, see this post for a related 'Hacking Man' event!)

"Three … Two … 1 … 0 … 1NN0VATE!

You are a community of innovators and Black Rock City is a mecca for those who D.I.Y. or die. We're excited to give you these tools and building blocks to play with in the digital space. Announcing innovate.burningman.com!

We're gifting you data so that you can gift it back to the community by building amazing apps and other innovative online interactive 'art'. This portal contains datasets, APIs and very important guidelines for your technical tinkering.

We can't wait to see what you create. Nothing’s stopping you from doing a Kevin Flynn, but if taking out the MCP isn’t your cup of mashup, then consider making some other useful social tool for the community … maybe a klown finder app, complete with pinball sounds ...  Or maybe you’re going to boldly go where no Burner has gone before and build an app that finally explains what TTiTD is by bedazzling virgin eyes with burnified pixels.

Just remember, with great data comes great responsibility, and be sure to submit your creations back to us because we’d love to feature your work in our application showcase.

XOX,

The Burning Man Tech Team"

Exhibit Your Artwork at the Center Camp Cafe

"Calling all artists and makers. How would you like to place your art in one of the most popular structures on the Playa? That's right! You have the opportunity to exhibit your talent and ideas in the Center Camp Cafe for Burning Man 2014!

We are looking for art in all shapes and sizes! If you have a sculpture that would get lost in the great expanse of the open playa, and might be appreciated in a more intimate setting, please let us know! You can also take over one of our 'alcove' spaces and create your own environment or vision of the Caravansary Theme. Sculpture or painting, large or small, please write to us and tell us what you would like to bring!

Also, the Cafe hosts a gigantic two-dimensional wall art gallery featuring paintings, photographs, interactive art or whatever you can hang on our boards! If you are a painter or photographer and always felt lost in giant art world on the Playa, now is your opportunity to shine and be a part of our KIOSK project. The works must fit into a 48" x 48" space and extend no further than 8" from the Kiosk surface. To see pictures of the Kiosk spaces, and other parts of the Cafe, see our Flickr gallery here.

To be a part of this beautiful and exciting environment, please write to us and include your name, contact information and the title of your project, along with images or rendering of your project, and estimated dimensions.

Thanks!
Katmandu and the Cafe Art Team"

Volunteer at the Center Camp Cafe Sound & Performance Stage!

Sleepless writes:

"We feel that expressing oneself through, you guessed it, Sound and Performance, is really rad, and we always need help facilitating that magnificent expression. If that sounds up your alley, then come join our wonderfully wacky world of volunteering and help us produce some spectacularly stimulating sound!

We have multiple positions to choose from depending on your strengths and skills: Sound Techs (who know how to run a board), Stage Techs (who know know to set up a stage), and Stage Managers (who can herd cats while maneuvering through talent, time, space, and chaos).

If any of those descriptions feel like a good fit (or even a partial fit!), we’d love to hear more from you! Follow the links for the role you're interested in above, which will lead you to a short form - fill that out so we can learn more about you and our jazzingly jovial journey will begin from there!"

Help Us Create the Sound File for MerKHANa

Artist Michael Emery has made some incredibly beautiful artworks for Burning Man over the years. He writes:

"We want to get your voice and thoughts mashed into our sound montage. We are evolving last years MerKaBa project into this years MerKHANa project. We are inviting you to have your voice added into our sound montage. Go to this website where you can send us your thoughts in written form or send audio files of your voice to us.

We will mash what you send into our audio montage. Be famous. Be the first on your block. Be heard for the beautiful, lusty, soulful, thoughtful, deep or shallow person you know yourself to be. Do it now!"

5th Annual Burning Man Ultramarathon! 50 Kilometer Run

Yep, those crazy bastards are at it again, bless their hearts. If you want in on some lunacy, here's your chance! Cherry Bomb writes:

"On Wednesday, August 28th at 5am, runners across the playa will begin the 50 kilometer run from Pink Lightning Camp. We'll run loops around the playa, traveling journeys in our mind that nothing can compete with. We'll dance with you as we run past, give out free sweaty hugs, and ask you to join us. There's still time to train, so dust off those running shoes and prepare to run what promises to be the funnest race of your life. There are competitive runners, those who are just out to have fun, and those who love the sufferfest and love. However you want to run, we have the race for you. Run with us for the race of a lifetime!

For more info, visit our website or email me with your name, gender, race date age, email address, regular address, emergency contact info for off and on the playa, and t-shirt size.

Volunteers (that significant other?) are also welcome to the party of a race.

Get ready to have the ultimate high: runner's high!"

Call for Submissions: The Jewelry of the Playa

Ladybee writes:

"Karen, George and I would like to thank the community for supporting the Kickstarter campaign for our book, The Jewelry of the Playa!

We’ve photographed hundreds of pieces, but we know we haven't seen everything, so we have created a website where you can upload images and stories of your playa jewelry, whether you made it or were gifted with it. We may add some of these to our book - and we’d love to see what you have.

You'll soon be able to pre-order books on this site as well."

FIGMENT San Diego 2014 Call for Project Submissions

FIGMENT is an awesome thing ... one of the closest things to Burning Man off playa. We love it, and you should too. There are FIGMENTS across the country now. Check 'em out. And now, here's Nicole (aka MissInformation) from San Diego:

"We are excited to announce that FIGMENT San Diego is open for art project submissions for our second FIGMENT at Chicano Park on June 28. The deadline for project submissions is June 9. FIGMENT embodies the belief that everyone can make something of artistic value and that the arts can build a community of our best selves.

We’re looking for artists who embrace those ideals to help us continue FIGMENT in its San Diego setting. To read more about how to submit a project for FIGMENT San Diego 2014, please visit this link. If you have questions about submitting a project, please email us."

Parasolvent: a 20' Tall Interactive Kinetic Sculpture

Dan Benedict writes:

"Ever have a dream that seemed so big you didn’t dare dream it? I’ve always loved Burning Man art but never thought I’d ever see my own on the playa. But after my first Burn last year I was so inspired, and my conception of what was possible had grown so much, that I decided I’d give it a shot!

I managed to get chosen as an honorarium artist this year, been working day and night planning my installation, and now I’m in the home stretch on my fundraising campaign. I now understand the sacrifice, passion, and heart required to build art for the playa and would be honored to have your support.

Learn about my installation here."

Midburn Genesis: In the Beginning There Was Art

Rei Dishon (aka Camera Boy) of the Midburn team writes:

"The Israeli Burning Man community is holding its first regional event in June: Midburn. Hundreds of volunteers are building this 2,500 participant event. More than 30 big art projects are being built right now and the art teams are in need of support.

Many Midburners have been to regional events all over the world and as the global community grows, we're reaching out to YOU, Burners from around the world, for a helping hand (of inspiration).

So, here's our friendly call to action... please check out the Midburn Art Fund project and help to spread the word.

2014 Art Car Forum at Recess-Reunion – Black Rock City, NV - August 27

Well now, this is cool. Superstar writes:

"Mutant Vehicles and Art Cars are one of the most incredible offerings on the Playa.  Ranging from Pirate Ships to Flaming Octopi to Motorized Cup Cakes . . . each are unique, inspiring and an important part of the cultural fabric that makes up Black Rock City.

On Wednesday, August 27 from 1pm - 5pm at Recess-Reunion, we are hosting a forum for Art Car designers, creators, builders, supporters, and enthusiasts to share their stories and their art work with residents of Black Rock City. How did Captain Flipper get a 71’ yacht called “Christina, Queen of BRC” to the playa? What does it take to create an art car from scratch? How do you operate these vehicles during the Burn and what are some of the fun and interesting stories around some of the most unique art projects?

If you have an art car, have worked on art cars, support art cars, work for the Department of Mutant Vehicles, or have any other interest in helping create a forum around these amazing machines, we want to hear from you. Please fill out the information on this link.

We hope to create a forum for people to share and learn more about Art Cars at Burning Man. And we can’t wait to see you at the forum!"
