FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Greetings everybody and welcome to May! The flowers are blooming, Burner Express tickets are on sale (it's the easiest way to get to and from the playa), the Mutant Vehicle application deadline is looming (May 15 = looming), we're calling for submissions for the Burner Resource Page, and we've got a job opportunity and an internship to perhaps tickle your fancy. Yep, that's very May-like.

We've also got an important update on this year's Temple -- a changing of the guard, if you will -- take a look below. Speaking of mind-blowing artwork, if you're going to be pre-registering your art piece with us, the deadline is June 11.

If you were to spin the globe, you'd see that Afrika Burn went OFF last weekend in South Africa -- we'll have full coverage and photo galleries for you in the next JRS. (If you can't wait, here are images from Afrika Burn 2013.)

Read on and enjoy!

The Man burns in 113 days (how's that project comin'?)!

Burner Express Shuttle Bus Tickets Now On Sale!

As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce vehicle traffic to and from Black Rock City (rideshare, yo!), we're increasing the capacity of the Burner Express shuttle bus service this year, and tickets are now on sale! Here are the quick and dirties:

  • Visit the Burner Express website for all the information and to buy tickets.
  • Buses will be offered from San Francisco and Reno.
  • You will need to have a Burning Man ticket, a Will Call confirmation number, or Low Income ticket confirmation number in order to buy a Burner Express ticket.
  • Tickets start from $68 dollars from Reno, and $100 from San Francisco.
  • Folks will be able to bring bikes this year for an extra fee ($20 from Reno, $50 from SF).
  • Group sales are also available from other cities. For example if a 30-person camp is coming from Portland, they can submit a request to charter a bus. Click on "Group Sales" on the Burner Express website to learn more.

[Editor's note: that bus up there in the picture? Yeah, that's not the bus.]

Call for Submissions: The 2014 Burner Resource Page

In our efforts to help our community help itself, and to support the cottage industry that's grown up around our little shindig in the desert, we'll be publishing our Burning Man Resource Listing again this year. So, if you're a Burner-owned or Burner-oriented business, and would like to offer your wares to the Burners everywhere, fill out this form by Wednesday June 25, 2014.

We will create a webpage of all submissions that don't violate copyright, trademark or other laws, and publicize it to our community starting on July 1, 2014. Late submissions will not be considered for publication ... no exceptions. We reserve the right NOT to publish anything we deem inappropriate.

And remember ... Burning Man is NOT anti-commerce. We're against commodification, which is quite a different thing. We recognize that commerce makes the world go around, and we believe in the creativity and drive of small business owners. Those are the folks we seek to support here, in the face of mass market consumerism. Keepin' it in the family. So, participating businesses ... thank you for serving and supporting our community!

Mutant Vehicle Applications Due May 15!

If you're hoping to bring a mutant vehicle to Burning Man 2014, applications are due May 15 ... if you miss the deadline, well then, you miss out.

And remember, the only mutant vehicles (as in, art cars) that are allowed into Black Rock City are those that have been blessed by the Department of Mutant Vehicles due to their extreme awesomeness.

Hop to it, people!

Please submit resume and cover letter by 10:00am PT on Monday, May 19th, 2014, using this link.

JOB SUMMARY

The Government Relations Intern (GRI) will engage with multiple areas of Government Relations functions during the busy Burning Man pre-event production cycle, and during the event in August 2014. The role will require a high level of organization, acute attention to detail and deadlines, top-notch written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to function well and think clearly in a high-pressure, buoyantly fun, and creative environment.

Update: The 2014 Burning Man Temple

We're announcing an unexpected change for Burning Man 2014: this year's Temple in Black Rock City will not be the previously announced Temple of Descendents. Unfortunately artist Ross Asselstine was unable to agree to the terms of our agreement and elected to halt the project.

If you contributed financially to the project, thank you for supporting this community effort. The Temple of Descendents Crew will ensure your contributions are refunded.

We are happy to report that David Best has stepped up and agreed to build yet another of his incredible creations for Black Rock City in 2014. It will be entitled "Temple of Grace", and we'll have design details for you very soon!

Burning Data: Black Rock City Census Blog Posts 2013 Results

Scribble of the Black Rock City Census Lab (that's not a dog, btw) writes:

"Curious about where citizens of Black Rock City 2013 came from? How many are men? The Black Rock City Census Lab has started publishing posts on its blog concerning the 2013 Survey. How is the 2013 population different from earlier years? Starting this week and continuing into June, the Black Rock City Census will be offering up nuggets of Burning Data from the 2013 Survey. Check it out, subscribe or comment here.

Any questions regarding the Black Rock City Census, email the Census Team."

What if Burning Man Had Never Happened? Help Save Beach Bonfires in San Francisco!

Beach bonfires are again threatened at San Francisco's Ocean Beach, but together we can once again keep this tradition alive. In 2007 the National Park Service almost banned beach fires, but in response the Burner community sent in over 3,000 comments and raised $35,000 to have Burners Without Borders place artistic fire pits on the beach and save beach fires. You can read the whole awesome story here.

Now, with the proposed curfew of 9pm, bonfires will no longer be allowed after dark in the summer ... and we fear that this is a first step towards a permanent ban. You can read more about this in Scribe's story in the SF Bay Guardian.

In the spirit of civic participation, we are asking for your help, wherever you live. Every email comment will make a difference, so please make one now. It will take less than one minute. The public comment period ends on May 16! This is an opportunity to promote immediacy, interpersonal connectivity and self-expression by maintaining community gathering spaces. (If this bonfire law had been in effect in 1986, Burning Man would have never occurred at Baker Beach!)

Comment Here!

Sample comment copy:

I support public bonfires on Ocean Beach as a way to build community and share the outdoors. Therefore, I ask that you:

  1. Keep the bonfire curfew at 10pm.
  2. Increase the number of fire pits to 16, the number designated in 2007.
  3. Implement a Public Education plan that supports the future success of bonfires at Ocean Beach and encourages beach goers to adopt Leave No Trace principles.

Burning Man GLC Front Page in the Reno Gazette-Journal

The Reno Gazette-Journal got wind of the Burning Man Global Leadership Conference, and sent along a reporter to cover the proceedings -- particularly the discussion of the "Renossance" as they're calling the impressive cultural tidal wave happening in Reno these days.

Here's the front page article.

Burning Land

New (to us) blogger Hannah Miller adds a lyrical, poetic style to the variety of voices on the Burning Blog, painting some pretty pretty pictures on your brainpan. In her first post (hopefully of many), she covers some of the farflung Regional events in a whirlwind (virtual) trip around the world. Here's an excerpt:

"I wish I could capture all the songs sung in these places. They ought to be tallied and added to the sum of the human race. We humans are as creative at violence as we are at love; love always stays one step ahead of the violence, that is one thing we can depend on. But it will always take perseverance of some kind, the going up into the mountains, the lighting of fire in the night."

Nice, huh? Yeah, we thought so too. Read the whole post, Burning Land.

Research Tip for Burning 365 Days a Year: Reach Out!

Another in the 10 Principles blog series, Caveat Magister takes to the Burning Blog to explore the value of reaching out to strangers and making a connection. Here's an excerpt:

"One of the extraordinary things about Burning Man is the way in which it collapses the borders that keep us apart. The 'Gifting Economy,' Radical Self-Expression, Radical Inclusion, Communal Effort, Decommodification, the visceral experiences we have, the unexpected moments that flash like lightning … these are all things that give us an excuse to reach out to each other … more than that, to reach out to each other honestly, and speak from the heart ...."

"Don't Be A Darkwad" Burning Man 2013 Trip-Lapse

OK this is pretty rad. Gadget Dogpaw writes:

"This video is a documentation of my 2013 Trip Home to Burning Man. It's nearly every photo I took on the Playa completely untouched with a hint of dusty slow motion. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen! Come frolic with our Caravan in 2014 at 'DRAPES EVERYWHERE!'

Join the Black Rock Rangers!

"Interested in participating at Burning Man in a unique and interesting way? Would you like to really get to know Black Rock City by walking its streets and meeting other participants? Do you like to help people out when things have gotten a bit wacky, when tempers flare, or when someone just needs a sympathetic ear?

If so, Rangering might be for you. Day or night, pairs of Rangers can be found walking and bicycling the streets of Black Rock City, engaging with the community, enjoying the art, always at the ready to help sort things out. Black Rock Rangers are participants who volunteer a portion of their time in service of the safety and well-being of the Burning Man community. Rangers act as non-confrontational community mediators, facilitators of public safety (with the expectation that everybody read the back of their ticket, of course!), providers of reliable information, and navigators of the edge of chaos.

If that sounds like fun, please consider volunteering with us! Prospective Black Rock Rangers are at least 18 years old and must have attended Burning Man a minimum of two times, and at least once within the past ten years.

The deadline to apply to become a Black Rock Ranger is August 1. For more information about the Rangers and the application process, please see this page. Questions? Email us! We look forward to hearing from you!"

The Alien Siege Machine

"The Alien Siege Machine is huge. HUGE. H U G E. It is a 4 story, wooden, interactive and interpretive Burning Man sculpture for Burning Man 2014. This project is going to be a hugely collaborative week-long extravaganza of kinetic connection, lights, sounds, myth and exploration.

The piece is alive and active with participants: The grand perch of the elevated catwalks are brimming with participants gleefully looking out over Black Rock City and all of its artistic wonders. The interior spaces are teeming with participants working the cannons, tracks, and deciphering the trans-temporal story of The Alien Siege Machine. Find more information here."

Paha'oha'o - Sacrifice Yourself Into a Giant Volcano

We can't quite decide if this is a "Joe vs. the Volcano" fantasy gone horribly wrong, a junior high science fair project gone horribly right, or just plain outrageously awesome, but whatever it is, we couldn't resist sharing it with you. [Editor's note: we love you people, we really do.] Jenni writes:

"Paha'oha'o will be a 30' tall by 50' in diameter volcano. A hidden lava tube will lead you to a ladder, where you will begin the climb to the top of the caldera. The only way down will be the drop slide of transformation, 22' feet high with a daunting 10' vertical drop. Take a leap of faith into the belly of the volcano, say goodbye to the past and embrace a new beginning. Leave the volcano cleansed and transformed, ready to create a new truth about yourself.

Inside the belly of the volcano will be an enclosed room. This will be a place of learning and sharing of the Hawaiian culture through hula pahu drums and story telling. A group from the island of Oahu will teach hula and mele (songs).

And don't forget the fire! During the week fire will shoot out the mouth of the volcano. On Thursday the whole thing will be burnt to the ground for the ultimate cleansing.

Find out more and help make Paha’oha’o a reality at our website."

"Shelter From the Storm (A Fire Inside)” by Timeless

Timeless has been carving stunning wood sculptures on playa for years ... and these sound especially striking. He writes with this innovative crowdfunding proposal:

"Not your grandmother's Burn ... carved monuments burn on playa, yet survive into the default world: A massive tree stump becomes a 30-ft. depiction of The Man wrapped in carved flames. On playa, the solid wooden sculpture will actually burn from inside-out. The all-night Burn is quenched and later hardened to create the ultimate, enduring swag.

Funding could be as game-changing as this new art form: monuments created last summer in Black Rock City become colossal rewards for investor/angels of this summer's installation. When shared publicly, their value(s) will resonate...

This is crowd funding without the brazier and bouncing with really nice rewards—huge sculptures and bronze casting to share in public spaces.

Also, we seek a camp to interact with for planning and promotions of the actual fire performance. (We'll bring bad-ass art for the camp too!)"
