Hello Builders of Theme Camps, citizens of Black Rock City!

I am in awe of the 2014 version of our community and astonished by the number of submitted Theme Camp Questionnaires.  The Placement team is preparing for our first mapping weekend having reviewed more questionnaires than ever.

Hundreds of you picked 7:30 sector as your first choice of placement location.  We are thrilled by the challenge of fitting as many camps as we can into each sector, but I must alert you that not every camp will be able to be in 7:30.

Some of you will discover the joys of other sectors and other parts of Black Rock City.  I know you are up for the adventure and we all appreciate your gracious acceptance of moves and shifts through the city.

If your camp would like to come forward and volunteer to move to where you are needed in the city, that would fantastic.

To ease the demands on our friends providing Emergency Services, one of the tasks of the Placement Team is to balance population density throughout the city.  We appreciate everyone coming together to help us help them.  Thank you all for your contributions and flexibility.

Our team spends the month of June creating the map.  Once it is built, we announce Placement - look for news in early July.  Meanwhile, enjoy the Newsletter, stay excited and remember - when you write to us:
placement@burningman.com, Subject line: [Sector or Placer's name] Camp Name

Thanks!

1. The "When?" of the What? Where? When? Guide

Get ready to tell the world about your on playa events in 140 characters or less.

The listing opens Thursday June 12, 2014

Whether you're showing a movie at your hand-built drive-in theater, holding a life-size whack-a-mole tournament, or hosting daily tantric yoga classes at your camp, be sure to add your event to the 2014 Playa Events Registration, so people know when and where to find it!  Don't worry that you don't have your placed location, we'll take care of listing your address with your events.

The link to add your event to the 2014 Directory is http://playaevents.burningman.com/

The on-line submission form and directory will be available through the Burning Man event, but only the events submitted before July 1st, 2014 – or the first 1500 received, whichever comes first – will also be included in the What? Where? When? guide, the printed playa events listing that's handed out at the Greeters' Station.

Where else do Playa Events appear? If you've marked your event to be public, it will be found in a variety of places:

The API (Application Programming Interface) for software developers to include in their mobile or PC applications.

The Directory computer system at Playa Info, where participants can add more events as well as browse them. If you add a password, you can edit your event on the Directory.

2. HEALTH DEPARTMENT PERMITS & DEADLINES

In order to fight the threat of food-borne illness on the playa, the Nevada State Health Division (NSHD) has requirements for camps preparing food including the need of a health permit and an inspection. You must apply for and be permitted as a Temporary Food Establishment by the NSHD if:

* You will be cooking or serving food to large groups of more than 125* FELLOW CAMPERS of your theme camp on a consistent basis.

(If you have a communal kitchen shared by 125 or more campers, but meals are prepared individually, or in smaller quantities than for 125 persons, a permit is not required, however we highly recommend you research and review safe food handling practices, starting with the Nevada Division of Health information).

* You wish to share, cook or serve food or non-alcoholic beverages to the general Burning Man population (gifting food).

Here are the permit procedures and deadlines:

If you have already applied for a permit, you should be receiving instructions in the mail soon.

If you are planning to make and give away food or drinks to the public on the playa including fresh squeezed juice, coffee with dairy, or even snow cones, you need a permit. Here's the scoop from Cindy Ulch, Supervisor with the Nevada State Health Divisions Public Health and Clinical Services Environmental Health Program:

The only application any camp needs is the "Food Permit Application for Burning Man" found here:

http://health.nv.gov/BFHS_EHS.htm

Look for the flame icon at the bottom of the website for this application and other food safety information and guidelines regarding Burning Man.

DEADLINES:

Via Mail:  We must have sufficient time to be able to process the application and send back a letter of confirmation.  So they need to be received at Ellen Kunz's office in Winnemucca no later than one week before the event - August 15, 2014.

Don't wait until the last minute. It would be a shame to have to cancel your plans, or even risk being closed at the event.  That mailing address is  NSHD - PHCS 475 West Haskell Street Suite 38, Winnemucca, NV 89445.

In person:  No later than THURSDAY AUGUST 22rd - 4150 Technology Way Suite 100, Carson City, NV.  Phone: (775) 687-7550 or 475 West Haskell Street Suite 38 Winnemucca, NV.  Phone (775) 623-6588.

On the application, the event coordinator is "Burning Man". Leave the location blank, unless you know what street and intersection you be at during the event. After mailing the application and $50 USD payment, all anyone needs to do is come and pick up their permit at Playa Info in Center Camp during the following days:

Sunday August 24th through Saturday August 30th (specific hours to be determined, and announced)

We do this so that we can get an accurate camp location from which to do inspections. WE are NOT issuing new permits at Playa Info.

IMPORTANT: A NUMBER OF CAMPS LAST YEAR DID NOT COMPLETE THE PERMIT PROCESS BY PICKING UP THEIR PERMIT AT PLAYA INFO AND RECEIVING THEIR INSPECTION.  NOT COMPLETING THE PROCESS IS THE SAME AS NOT BEING PERMITTED. DON'T BE SHUT DOWN. YOU MUST PICK UP YOUR PERMIT AND BE INSPECTED TO BE IN COMPLIANCE.

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: Please contact Ellen Kunz (775) 623-6588 or email ekunz at health.nv.gov

3. Theme Camp Listing

Each year we publish a list of every camp requesting Placement and indicated it's okay to be publicly listed.

This is not a list of Placed camps - just those who completed a questionnaire.

If you indicated that you did NOT want to be "Publicly Listed" on your questionnaire, your camp will not be there.

If you spot an error, please contact placement@burningman.com and we will correct it.

The list is almost live and will be found here: http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/themecamps.html?yy=2014
