Greetings and welcome to the onset of May, that wonderful time of year when we once again turn on our vehicle's air conditioning and are rewarded with a face full of playa dust! Sure is a great way to get blasted with memories ... but hopefully you weren't wearing a nice suit.
This last weekend, the DPW had its first managers meeting of the year. A grand total of 32 DPW managers met up at the Burning Man Ranch out in the Black Rock Desert to conspire to build yet another Black Rock City in which the magic will happen. Somewhere in there, the realization hit 'em -- Burning Man is appearing on the horizon.
Speaking of which, today's the last day to pre-register your theme camp for placement (it's all first-come first-served after this), and the deadline for submitting your registration is 12 noon PST. But we're gathering you're on top of this already, right? Right.
We've got a nice smattering of offerings for you here today, including an invitation to submit a design (or more) to be considered for inclusion amongst our official stickers for 2013 ... always a perennial favorite. And it's a good indicator that Burning Man is indeed around the corner.
Can you feel it yet? Give it a minute ... you will.
The Man burns in 123 days!

U.S. DISTRICT JUDGE DENIES PERSHING COUNTY ATTEMPT TO BLOCK BURNING MAN LAWSUIT
U.S. District Judge Robert C. Jones issued an order Friday denying Pershing County's attempt to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Black Rock City, LLC challenging the County's unconstitutional festival permitting process.
Burning Man organizers sued Pershing County in August 2012 after the County breached a series of agreements it had previously entered into with Black Rock City, LLC, and enacted an unconstitutional ordinance that singles out the Burning Man event.

BRUNO'S IS FOR SALE
If you've traveled through Gerlach on your way to Burning Man (which the great majority of you do), you've passed by Bruno's Country Club, or gassed up at the gas station there. Well, Bruno is selling it all off. It could be YOURS if you wanna pony up. Here's the news in the Reno Gazette-Journal:

BURNING MAN IN BUTANE-PROPANE NEWS
The April 2013 issue of Butane-Propane News (dubbed "The New York Times of the LPG industry") has a great article by John Needham about flame effects artist Eric Smith, Burning Man Fire Art Safety Team (FAST) Manager DaveX, and this little shindig out in the desert called Burning Man. You might have heard of it?

BRAF GRANTEE "FLOAT" PROJECT BUILDS COMMUNITY, TESTS AIR QUALITY IN BEIJING
The Black Rock Arts Foundation provided an art grant in 2012 to FLOAT, a participatory art/design project using air-quality-sensing kites in Beijing, China. FLOAT had two components; a workshop and a public installation. The workshops gathered local Beijing residents to make kites with an air-quality-sensing module, and the public installation was a group kite flight in parks throughout the city using these kites.
Check out this blog post and the great video documentary about the project:

STARLIGHT IN RETROSPECT
Remember these pretty things from 2012? Here's a retrospective video montage about the Starlight Project. Seven large plywood stars were placed on the playa to map out the constellation Orion creating a sense of place and a "heaven on earth" effect.

STEPHEN COLBERT COMPARES CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE TO BURNING MAN
We got a chuckle out of this. While interviewing Bill Clinton, Stephen Colbert asks:
"How would you compare something like the Clinton Global Initiative to other big groups that get together, like Davos or TED Talks or something like that - or Burning Man? What is the difference between this and those other gatherings?"

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: BURNING MAN 2013 STICKER DESIGN PROJECT- ENTER BY JUNE 3
This is the official call for designs for the 2013 Burning Man stickers! Your design could be the one passed out with the materials you receive as you pass through the Greeters Station upon entering Black Rock City. Other designs will become official sticker schwag passed out on-and-off the playa throughout the year. Help us remember our wonderful home in the desert even when we're away throughout the year. So, don't hesitate. Participate! Thank you and good luck!

• 2. 5" x 5.75" with a 0.125" corner radius
• 3" x 3"" square with a 0.062" corner radius
• 3" Diameter Circle
Design: Whichever type of sticker tickles your fancy (or maybe you're very ticklish and want to enter several designs), remember there IS a theme, and we like stickers that attempt to use the theme. Read up on the Cargo Cult theme! http://burningman.com/art_of_burningman/bm13_theme.html
The design MUST incorporate both the name Burning Man and the year 2013.
Colors:
• If using 1-3 colors, set up the file to print as PMS
• If using 4 or more colors, set up the file to print as CMYK
Priority: Round stickers are given priority for winning the coveted "Gate Sticker" spot, going out to ALL Black Rock Citizens. Other sticker sizes are printed out and handed out to volunteers throughout the year both in Black Rock City and at other Regional events.

BURNER BEEKEEPERS, DONATE YOUR HONEY!
Smallfry writes:
"My name's Smallfry, and I could use your help on a project. I'm building a bumblebee mutant vehicle to bring to the playa this year by the name of Beezus Christ Super Car. Born in the land of Dust and Honey, Beezus comes before you bringing sweet salvation! He will be equipped with a honey bar at the back where we will be serving honey to weary travelers. We'd like to have flights featuring honey from Burners all around the world! If you're a beekeeper or know someone who is, we'd love to have a jar of yours to share with everyone! Drop us a line at beezuschristsupercar@gmail.com, and put 'Beezus' in the headline so we don't miss it.

THE GUARDIAN OF DAWN
We'd like to direct your attention to a particularly cool (or hot, rather) project for this year's Burn. If you were on playa in 2012, you may have noticed a lack of spots to hang out around a warm fire in the cold wee hours. Well, luckily, The Iron Monkeys (hailing from Seattle) noticed too. And they'll be bringing another one of their amazing fire gardens for us to enjoy: The Guardian of Dawn. With your help, of course.

GENERATORS: BAFFLING!
Bringing a generator can make your Burning Man experience a lot more luxurious ... running a coffee maker, microwave, lights, sound system, heck -- an ice machine! -- all of these take electricity to run. Thing is, generators are usually LOUD and STINKY.
- Bring the quietest generator you can afford, and the smallest that will meet your actual needs. Larger generators are more difficult to transport, use more fuel and create more pollution.
- Don't run your generator late at night or early in the morning.
- Place the generator as far from other camps as possible. Remember, as far from YOUR camp means closer to someone else's.
- Cover your generator with a sound shield or baffle. Do NOT bury it to shield the noise. No matter how well it is filled afterwards, the hole leaves a tremendous gouge in the playa.
- Make sure people can't trip over any power cords.
The ePlaya has a whole thread with ideas for baffling your generator:

Overheard at BMHQ this week: "It's starting to feel a lot like Burning Man around here." Ayup, sure is.
Theme camp fundraiser events are popping up on the calendar, art project Kickstarters are spreading like wildfire through the social network, and early preparations are underway for all sorts of dreams, fantasies, grand schemes and the hard logistics needed to make them happen.
Yep, it's starting to feel a lot like Burning Man.
Speaking of which, the deadline for theme camp registration is fast approaching -- April 30, to be exact. So if you've got plans to register for pre-placement, hop to it. And keep in mind that this year, a Burner Profile is required, so if you don't already have one, allot yourself some additional time to make that happen beforehand.
In ticket news, the Low Income Ticket Program is no longer accepting applications for 2013, and the last of the tickets are in the process of being rewarded as we type. Details below.
Lastly, we wrapped up the 7th Annual Burning Man Global Leadership Conference last weekend, and our man Caveat has been reporting on it in the Burning Blog ... definitely worth a read. http://blog.burningman.com/tag/glc/
The Man burns in 135 days!

RIP: PEPE OZAN, ARTIST & SCULPTOR
We are deeply saddened by the news of artist Pepe Ozan's recent death. Pepe was a formidable and passionate artist, sculptor and visionary who contributed greatly to the Burning Man experience.

LOW INCOME TICKET PROGRAM CLOSES
This just in from the intrepid ticket team:
The Low Income Ticket Program is no longer accepting applications for 2013. If you submitted your application on or before April 12 rest assured we are still busily reviewing applications.
If you submitted your application more than six (6) weeks ago and haven't heard anything back, please double check your spam folder to make sure your notification isn't lingering there before contacting us. We'll continue to send out notifications for the next few weeks.

RIDESHARE TO BURNING MAN
Looking to get to and from Black Rock City this year? Well, plenty of people are too! And of course, ridesharing is the smart, economical and environmentally-friendly way of making it happen. Whether you have a ride to offer or are in need of a ride, coordinate your carpool on our rideshare board.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**
REGISTERING YOUR PROJECT? YOU'LL NEED A BURNER PROFILE
We wanted to give you the heads up that if you're submitting a project registration form for a theme camp, art installation, Mutant Vehicle, or press/media project, you'll need to create a Burner Profile first.
If you do not already have a Burner Profile, please allow extra time in your registration process to create one.
You can access Burner Profiles, forms and their submission deadlines at http://profiles.burningman.com/ .

NEVADA LEGISLATIVE LEADERS LOOK TO TAX BURNING MAN
The Nevada legislature is considering rewriting the Nevada entertainment tax law such that Burning Man would no longer be exempt from paying a 5% entertainment tax. Burning Man is exempt because it is considered an art festival and because it's held outdoors.

SEARCHING FOR SUPPLIES, ART PARTS AND WHATNOT? TRY OUT TINKOMATIC
This is pretty rad. Thought you might find it useful. Bob writes:
"This is my yearly plug about a small web app I developed that can help people get their gears and art parts in place and in time, and without depleting the planet: TinkOMatic (www.tinkomatic.com) allows you to search multiple classifieds and auction sites at once, and save your searches until you find what you're really looking for.
You can search craigslist, oodle, backpage, kijiji, and eBay all at once; and if you don't find right away that elusive playa bike, parabolic antenna, or tent frame you need for your next project, you can just save your searches, and easily check whether anything new came up.
The app is completely free and has been featured on lifehacker, mashable, and techcrunch.
Peace,
-Bob a.k.a. Skinny D."

BURNING MAN AND THE PRINCIPLED LIFE
Here's a snippet from this nice blog post by David Immel:
"I want the world to be a better place. I want to be better at being better in the world. Burning Man gives me a practice ground, a supportive microcosm, a field of experimentation that I can then use in the 'real world.' I strive to be welcoming to strangers in the world. I strive to be welcoming to the potential for poetry and richness and awe and beauty that anyone I meet may create at any moment. I strive to carry wonder and spontaneity and artfulness and surprises to others. Burning Man makes the world alive and full and new and brave and well, a better place."

AROMATHERA POTTY PROJECT
"Burners have said that there's no sense of smell on the Playa.
Yet visitors to the porta potties testify otherwise.
I am Tracey of Lamay Camp, Kidsville and in 2011 I 'found my Gift'.
I had brought some essential oils and essential oil blends I created to the Playa to scent my tent for hypnotherapy experience sessions. Finding my visit to our local porta potties less than inspirational, I scented every third porta potty with a blend and put a sign up on the outside of the door indicating the blend and its all-botanical ingredients. When I returned a few hours later to check on the scented porta potties, I found line ups for them! Soon, the Aromathera Potties were the talk of Kidsville. One person even said that it was the highlight of his Burn! So I started to think: What if Aromathera Potties appeared all over Black Rock City? What if aromatherapy enthusiasts shared their gifts at their local porta potties throughout the Burn?

Be sure that the signs state boldly 'Aromathera Potty Project', name the blend in a fun but accurately evocative way ('Furry Forest' rather than 'Fun Fur' for an evergreen blend) and list all of the ingredients with the common and latin botanical names so that we don't endanger anyone with allergies to specific botanicals. NO SYNTHETIC SCENTS OR PERFUMES, PLEASE AS THESE ARE ALLERGENIC AND NOT NATURAL AND NOT AROMATHERAPEUTIC ETC.

In 2012, The AromaThera Potty Project exploded to over a dozen porta potty sites and AromaThera Potty Super Heroes.
So here's the deal with the Aromathera Potty Project:
1. Contact me so we can get on the same page and so that I can get an overview of the spread of the Project.
2. Select/collect/create a handful of blends or singles (I suggest 30ml of each) to scent your local porta potties with. Here are the 'Anarres Emo Oils' I used: http://www.anarreshealth.ca/catalog/3/essential_oils?page=3 I suggest every third or fourth porta potty to make the job manageable for you and to ensure that scent averse folks have a choice not to use an Aromathera Potty.
3. Create non moopy signs to post on the Aromatherapy Potties. Bring 2 per blend in case one goes missing.
4. Once on the playa, implement your Aromathera Potty Project at your local porta potties! Visit every 4 hours or so, tidy your porta potty and flick drops of essential oil goodness on the walls. It only takes a few minutes and you're done!
5. Marvel at the line ups at 'your' scented Aromathera Potties! Bask in praise, directed and overheard! Rejoice in the gift you are bringing to the Playa Experience!

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CROWDFUNDING YOUR BURNING MAN ART PROJECT
Ian MacKenzie writes:
"As a gift to the Burning Man community, I've collected my best advice for creators to harness the power of crowdfunding. After all, it's a perfect fit: much like Burning Man, the true currency being exchanged isn't money, but relationship (also know as shared indebtedness).

"FIGMENT [http://figmentproject.org] is excited to announce ALPHA [http://alpa.figmentproject.org], a completely new event, in addition to its free participatory arts events in cities across the USA and beyond. ALPHA is a weekend camp designed to provide support of all kinds for creators working in any medium or discipline, as long as their work is interactive or participatory. At ALPHA, creators collaborate to elevate their art, knowledge and skills as they share their work in progress, ideas and even their financial resources.
FIGMENT welcomes any and all artists who are in the process of creating work — for FIGMENT events, any other arts events, or individual installations or performances. Creators of all kinds are welcome at ALPHA… from sculptors, social scientists and playwrights to performers, musicians and philosophers. The only requirement is that they contribute to the content of ALPHA, by either bringing an art project that they are working on, or by hosting a workshop or meet-up to share their skills, knowledge, and experience.
Artists can register as many projects/performances/workshops/idea-swap sessions etc. as they would like after they buy a ticket. With ALPHA, FIGMENT intends to bring a large group of creators together, provide a basic structure for them to interact, share ideas and collaborate, and watch as amazing things happen.

ASK BEFORE YOU SHOOT
Did you just walk up on the PERFECT scene, and you're dying to capture this MAGICAL MOMENT? Before you pull out your camera and take the shot, do the polite and respectful thing: ask first.
Everybody has different sensitivities about their privacy, especially at Burning Man, when we're all flying our various freak flags. It's good form to ask your would-be subject for permission to take their picture BEFORE you shoot.

Greetings! As we write, the worldwide leadership of our far-flung Burning Man community is gathering together in Oakland for the annual Global Leadership Conference. This is annually gathering provides an opportunity for representatives, emissaries, ambassadors, leaders and staff to connect, share ideas and get inspired about sharing Burning Man culture with the world.
The GLC is a full weekend of panels, talks, workshops, and social activities during which participants learn and share best practices around community engagement, event production, civic participation, organizational structures and more. To say we're excited to have these Burning Man representatives all in one place at the same time would be an understatement.
Last night conference participants were treated to a screening of the new documentary "SPARK: A Burning Man Story" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbSUyYXH8hs) ... which is FANTASTIC, to say the least. We look forward to more screenings soon so that YOU can see it as well (more to come on that topic).
Meanwhile, in this JRS, we have job openings with the DPW, BMHQ internship opportunities, the opening of our Support a Project 2013 page (learn how to get your project on there!), getting a runner's high in Black Rock City, Leave No Trace training, Burning Peep and more. Hope this finds you well wherever you are!
The Man burns in 148 days!

We are currently recruiting for three Internships in our San Francisco office.
Burning Man internships will provide opportunities to engage with the pre-event preparations of the Communications Department, Regional Network and the Art Department during the busy pre-event production cycle (June-August) and on site in Black Rock City during the 2013 Burning Man event.
Internships require a high level of organization, acute attention to detail and deadlines, top-notch written and verbal communication skills and a keen ability to think quickly and function well in a high-pressure, creative environment that is often chaotic but always a lot of fun.
*** To be eligible, you must receive official school credit for your internship. ***

2013 PLAQUE OF REMEMBRANCE, CALL FOR NAMES
Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition continues to honor those people who have affected our Burning experiences and who participated in creating Burning Man. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year's Remembrance Plaque.
Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:
remembrance@burningman.com
(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.**)
Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year's plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year's plaque.
Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Manbase, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants).
May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

LEAVE NO TRACE - WITH YOUR TOOTHBRUSH. WHAT? READ ON:
Scott writes:
"We're looking for schools to participate in collecting old used toothbrushes for a communal art recycling project representing the over consumption of plastic material on this planet. The art piece will be displayed on the playa for the 2013 Burning Man event.
In line with the consciousness of Burning Man's principle, "Leave No Trace", we aim to educate kids on the harm plastic has on our environment and what we can do to properly manage its risk through recycling.
Our mission is to engage kids in their schools across the U.S. through education and art in the practices of sustainability through an item they use every day, the TOOTHBRUSH. Over ONE BILLION toothbrushes make their way to landfills annually. It takes several hundred years for these plastic toothbrushes to decompose into our soil. We are now in a full-blown plastic epidemic threatening our environment. The time is NOW to raise our collective consciousness in the proper disposal of plastics through recycling.
We have created a year round sustainable program for every school that participates in our art recycling project. It's a great program where your school earns .02 cents for every piece of plastic they collect and recycle. In addition, our organization will be giving away a $5,000 grant to one school through a collection contest.
We need your help in spreading this campaign to as many schools as possible. Please E-mail us at bmtoothbrush@gmail.com to start the process of registering your school. The process is simple. We'll walk you through each step. Once your school registers, they'll receive a ReVITALize bin to start collecting toothbrushes.
Thank you for your help and participation."

PETER HUDSON'S LATEST ZOETROPE "ETERNAL RETURN"
Lucky for us, Peter Hudson will be creating another of his incredible zoetropes for Burning Man 2013.
In case you weren't aware, a zoetrope cylindrical device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures; instead of drawings and shutters, Peter uses sculptures and strobe lights to achieve the same effect. In the past, he's used his formidable skills to bring swimmers, divers, monkeys, and rowing skeletons to life on the playa, and around the world.
We're not going to tell you the details of his project, as he prefers to unveil his creations in Black Rock City, but you can darn well be sure it's going to be amazing.

FIGMENT - SAN DIEGO, CA - APRIL 7
While we don't normally post local events in the JRS (we appreciate the fact that you don't all live in one place), we definitely want to bring this one to your attention because this is an exceptional example of Burning Man culture happening in the world. So there ya go. Miss Information writes:
"FIGMENT, a celebration of interactive and participatory art, is making its San Diego debut at Chicano Park this spring. This free family-friendly event stretches the boundaries of creativity and community by engaging visitors with art in a fresh new way: all featured artwork is participatory and interactive. FIGMENT also breaks down the barrier between artists and the public by encouraging the community to contribute their talents by bringing their own participatory and interactive art to share. Playing a game, creating a collage, adding paint to a mural in progress, banging on an experimental instrument – anything that gets people working, playing and creating together – is invited and welcome! FIGMENT Comes to San Diego in 2013: Chicano Park – Sunday, April 7th, 10AM – 6PM. For more info, visit our website at http://sandiego.figmentproject.org/ ."

BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR: NOISE
There's really no need to drone on about this one (so to speak), but it's always good form to be a good neighbor, and while radical self-expression says you're welcome to fly your freak flag however you damn well please in Black Rock City, you might consider it part of the gifting principle to be considerate of your immediate neighbors when it comes to how loud you're playing your music (or whatever) and when.
If you're having a conflict, talk with each other, work it out, and play it cool. If you can't come to a workable agreement, talk to a Black Rock Ranger -- they're trained in handling the non-confrontational mediation of disputes just like this.
Everybody loves a good neighbor.

BURNING MAN MAY BE THE FUTURE, BUT IT'S NOT AN ESCAPE
"In a recent Io9 article, futurist Jamais Cascio says that Burning Man 'is often the "default" scenario for tomorrow's culture among many futurists.'
Huh.
I suppose that's a compliment. But ... hey, what kind of future is that exactly anyway?"

Please support his project if you're so inclined:
