We're getting down to the wire here, people. Less than a month until this Rabbit heads to the playa, and shortly thereafter (or thereabouts) YOU will be joining us!
Are you getting that butterfly feeling in your belly yet? Maybe bordering on outright panic? Yeah, us too. This is crunch time around BMHQ and you can practically see the tension in the air like so many dust motes. But we're keeping it together. Breathing. We highly recommend that breathing part.
We hope you enjoyed that last JRS, with all the information about transportation and traffic. Can you BELIEVE there's so darn much to KNOW about going to Burning Man? It's insane, we know. But this ain't no picnic, folks. And we like it that way.
As the countdown to the Burn gets shorter, that "Participate" section gets longer and longer, and yep, we're in the thick of it. Enjoy.
The Man burns in 36 days!

BRC LLC AWARDED 4-YEAR EVENT PERMIT
The Bureau of Land Management has issued Black Rock City, LLC a 4-year Special Recreation Permit (SRP) to host the Burning Man event on the Black Rock Desert, with a maximum population limit of 68,000 participants for the 2013 event.
Being awarded a 4-year SRP is a testament to our community's longstanding practice of Leave No Trace, enabling us to achieve and surpass the environmental compliance requirements of our event permit's stipulations. So thank YOU for helping make this possible.

PROMOTE YOUR CAMP'S EVENTS ON BMIR, 94.5 FM!
Bobzilla says:
"BMIR, Burning Man Information Radio, is the best way to let the citizens of Black Rock City know about your theme camps, art installations and events. Since Placement is out, right now is the perfect time to record a promotional spot that we'll play on the air repeatedly! While BMIR broadcasts on the internet all year long at http://www.bmir.org, beginning August 1, we will start playing this year's camp promos. Then, starting August 21st, we'll be broadcasting LIVE from the playa, 24 hours a day. Across the city, people will be tuning in to 94.5 FM to hear late-breaking news, weather reports and--of course--your announcements.
It's never too soon to send us your radio spots. (Not sure how to record one? No worries! We've put together a handy tutorial at http://tinyurl.com/mn55p5that will show you how to record an announcement with a free audio program. It's pretty easy.) Please record an MP3 at 320kbps and keep it under 60 seconds long. Don't be afraid to repeat the basic information of what, where and when, and remember to mention your specific location! If you have questions, drop a line to our Promo Whisperer, Douglas, at promodoc@douglaswolk.com.
The best way by far to get us your spot is to email an MP3 to us at BMIR@burningman.com before the deadline of August 18; that will ensure that we can get your spot properly programmed and in rotation.
If you can't make that deadline, you can also put your announcements on a CD or flash drive and hand-deliver them to BMIR on the playa. BMIR is located just off Center Camp, right between the Black Rock Rangers and the Department of Mutant Vehicles.
And if your plans don't come together in time to pre-record a spot, the BMIR Production Office will be open during the event every day from noon to 4 PM. We can help you record an announcement right on the playa, though there may be a wait.
Thanks, and don't forget to tune your radio to 94.5 FM!

ADD YOUR CAMP AND FIND YOUR FRIENDS ON THE BURNER MAP
We love this system (now in its 3rd year?)! Mark your camp's location on the Black Rock City map, and find out where your friends are camping. It runs off of your Facebook account, so if you're Facebook-phobic, you're kinda out of luck (yeah we know ... pleh), but if you're down with the Facebooks, it's a great service. Super handy way to keep track of your friends (and people you went to high school with who you thought you'd never see again).

VALLEY FALLS STAGE STOP STORE
OK, so here's a thing. This came in from Tom Wright the other day. Thought we'd share it with you so maybe y'all who are coming from the PNW way can stop in on your way through, and show him some true Burner love. Here you go:
"I own 'The Valley Falls Stage Stop Store', in Valley Falls Oregon. It is an old stage coach stop & post office, expanded into a gas station, convenience store, antiques, art, jewelry & deli. I am at the junction of Hwy 31 & 395. Located right out my front door is Abert Rim, the highest longest freestanding escarpment in North America, surrounded by natural hot springs. I am 207 miles north of the front gates at Black Rock City. I have always wanted to attend but if I leave many would be w/out fuel here in the high desert. I always put out signs welcoming Burners & have a sign-up canvas for anyone to express themselves on. I love the Burner artists, GREAT people. Last year, however, was only problem(s). My first canvas was taken while I was at lunch one day & I had one group, that reminded me of Rainbow family people, that stole my pain pills & about $350 worth of merchandise. I was very disappointed. I will make it to a Burn one day, I have the place up for sale & when it sells I will be at the next Burn. LoveUawl, Tom Wright, Valley Falls, Oregon
Look forward, as always to seeing some of you, coming and returning. Have some mellow fun @ 'The Burn'."

WEBCASTER WANTED
After more than a decade of providing streaming video of the event, Burning Man's webcasting team has announced they want to hand over the reins to new people. JOIN THE BURN GARDEN WOOD DONATION TEAM
Located at 3, 6, and 9, near Promenade and Esplanade, the Burn Gardens are a cluster of Burn Platforms used for burning wood during the Burning Man Event. As the event draws to a close, the burning of wood at the Burn Gardens increases dramatically due to participants eager to burn their excess wood.
Starting Sunday morning 9/1/13 at 9am The Burn Garden Wood Donation Team will make sure that participants do not overstack the burn platforms or burn inappropriate materials, like trash, compost and recycling. Burning Man is proud to be the largest practicing Leave No Trace Event in the world and participants need to take their trash, recycling, and compost with them.
Additionally, the team will facilitate the collection of Wood Donations where participants can donate good quality, useable lumber. The donors will be doing most of the heavy lifting, you just need to direct them.
3-person team per Burn Garden

BURNING MAN CENTER CAMP CAFE COFFEE SHOP
Witchy invites us all:
"We want you to join us, so we can all work together to make coffee and lemonade and chai and oh-just-all-of-it while listening to music and dancing around and having a really good time while we caffeinate the masses of Black Rock City. We'll be really happy to see you in the desert.
We have an exciting self-scheduling system! There are only TWO steps to this new process:
1. You will fill out the 'New Registration Form.'
2. Once you are approved, you will get a welcome email with your password and login. Go to the site again to sign up for your shifts.
That's it. No back & forth emails, just YOU scheduling the shifts that YOU want. We'll still be here to help & you can email us at witchy@burningman.com to get all your questions answered.
Keep in mind that the late night shifts are always the hardest for us to fill, so if you're up for it please take one of those on. They're lots of fun!
Once you register, you'll get your welcome letter within 72 hours after you register for an account.
To Register for Shiftboard:
1) Go to https://www.shiftboard.com/BMCoffeeShop/
2) Click on 'New Registration' and fill out your information. (Yes, we need your contact information, and make sure to enter your phone number like this: 987-123-4567 (Shiftboard doesn't like parenthesis, but I do)).
3) Click the 'Submit Application' button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. This button is small and will try to hide from you. Don't let that button be all sneaky like that: You are better than that button!
4) You will need to enter the 3 characters into the box under the 'No-Spam Code:' section or the machine may think that you are a robot and it will not let you continue.
That's it! It's like magic, but with more coffee."

CALLING ALL FIRE CONCLAVES, FLAME EFFECTS SPECIALISTS, AND FIRE ARTISTS - TO IGNITE "UNIFIRE"!
Sunshine tells us we are all Unifires and this fire stage is for us all!
"Red Lightning and Playatech are collaborating to host UniFire, and we want to radically include YOUR flame effects, conclaves and art!! When many bring their visions, gifts and talents to the fire in communal effort, magick happens and the end result is more beautiful, brighter and brilliant. The deets...
We're building a fire performance stage along Esplanade, and will supply power, transpo, people, and overall organization. It will be framed by 'Threshold' - climbable male & female effigies with nests for laps, that will burn ceremoniously.
We invite awesome fire conclaves from around the world to 'own a night' of the stage and be radically self-reliant in programming, stage management, safety, and LNT. This gift of radical self-expression & civic responsibility within UniFire is an offering of many fires brought together as One, all while keeping their own unique flare.
We seek serious flame effects and the experts who create them, to join us in surrounding the performers with the right kind of light - flaming immediacy! We'll help you raise fuel money. And cool you off with ice cream:)
We also have room for a few small interactive fire experiences (sand, water, world's most radically-decommodified burn barrel, whateva!). We have a few project lead positions open if you want to make HOT new friends while playing with fire. And build days are coming in LA, San Jose and Portland.
If you have flame effects, lead an experienced conclave, or want to pARTicipate in any way, please contact UniFire@RedLightning.Org"

BE A BLACK ROCK SCOUT LEADER!
Zoinks opines:
"We have been working behind the scenes to create events for the Scouts this year. I can honestly write (just like last year) that I want to go to every event. We have a top-notch mix of hosts from previous years (Artery, DMV), and some new ones (Airport, etc.).
These events are designed to get at the heart of how Burning Man is brought to life each year. Have you ever wanted to hang out at BMIR, The Voice of the Man? Ever interested in how the hotties inspect and approve mutant vehicles? Interested in how Gate inspects all those cars while maintaining a professional, friendly atmosphere? You too can do it all this year by volunteering as a leader.
Remember, we are not a babysitting service. The parents are responsible for their children the whole time they are at an event. Scout leaders are responsible for gathering and leading the group to the event, making contact with the event hosts, and having a great time while learning about our community. We also have great swag.
You are what makes Burning Man worth while. You, as a volunteer, create the city and everything amazing within. That is why we need you to join us now. We will be posting the confirmed events within the next few weeks. So, send an email to blackrockscouts1@gmail.com as soon as possible to get confirmed as one of this year's elite squad of pure awesome.

LARRY HARVEY TO SPEAK AT COMMONWEALTH CLUB - SAN FRANCISCO - JULY 31
On July 31st, INFORUM at the Commonwealth Club is hosting an amazing event that gives its attendees unique insight into the founding of Burning Man and inspiration for Black Rock City.
Burning Man: The Story Behind Black Rock City is a one-on-one interview with the founder of Burning Man, Larry Harvey, as he speaks on the effect Burning Man has had on society today, the inspirations for this year's theme, Cargo Cult, how being headquartered in San Francisco has influenced the event, and plans for the non-profit Burning Man Project to extend Burning Man culture worldwide. The program will begin at 6:30pm, followed by a reception for audience members to mingle with Larry in attendance.
This is a great opportunity for Burners to learn more about Burning Man's genesis as they prepare for the event itself!

BATTEN DOWN YOUR CAMP. ALL THE TIME.
You know, either firsthand or if this will be your first Burning Man, via your friends, that the weather in the Black Rock Desert is unpredictable, subject to gale-force winds and zero-visibility dust storms that rise up suddenly and seemingly from nowhere. These winds can and will take your belongings and rearrange them to their whim, sometimes miles from your camp. The solution: batten everything down, all the time!
The Jackrabbits know a person whose half-full-of-greywater wading pool blew away once in a playa storm, near the beginning of the event week. That week the prevailing winds changed direction, and on Sunday, that very wading pool came rolling back down the same street it blew up, days prior. It became a camp shaggy dog story, about the pool that went to Burning Man by itself. You will not be so lucky.
Tie, or otherwise lash, everything down well. There are any number of ways to do this- rebar, 'playa staples', industrial stakes- the method doesn't matter, just make sure you do it. Spring clamps are great for holding things together and down. Know your knots- a bowline can save your camp from sure destruction!

Greetings everybody! This JRS is dedicated to getting TO Black Rock City and getting back OUT of Black Rock City. It expands upon the content found on our travel page here:
www.burningman.com/travel
But yeah, transportation and traffic, people. If there's just ONE thing you get out of this JRS, please please let it be this:
BE CAREFUL OUT THERE. DON'T DRIVE UNDER THE INFLUENCE (OF INTOXICANTS... OR THAT OTHER KILLER, SLEEPLESSNESS). DON'T SPEED. DON'T PASS CARS ON ROUTE 447. ARRIVE ALIVE.
Was that clear enough? Did it seem emphatic? Cool. We want you to arrive in Black Rock City safely, and return to your other home the same way.
OK here's another important one: LEAVE NO TRACE ALWAYS APPLIES - ON YOUR ENTIRE WAY TO AND FROM BLACK ROCK CITY. Do NOT trash our neighboring communities. Deposit your recycling and trash only at authorized dumping stations. For more information on those, see:
www.burningman.com/trash
This is a big JRS, we know, but it's important ... so please, take the time to read it through.
See you in Black Rock City ... the Man burns in 37 days!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO BLACK ROCK CITY
Here are driving directions to Black Rock City, coming from all points on the compass:

BURNING MAN RIDESHARES - GET 'EM HERE
Save yourself some money, and save your planet some carbon emissions by ridesharing. Burning Man has its own rideshare board here:
http://rideshare.burningman.com
Rideshare data is transferred from this service to the Directory at Playa Info in Black Rock City, so you can follow up on return rides and input new ride offers and needs while in BRC. So if you want to handle rideshare stuff while on playa, it's best to use this system since the only internet access in Black Rock City can be spotty, and you may not be able to connect reliably to source your ride.
There are indeed other rideshare services out there ... here are some that have been in touch with us:
Burning Man Rides (not a Burning Man web site): www.burningmanrides.com
Zimride: http://public.zimride.com/ride/add?event_id=2688
Amovens: www.amovens.com
Oh, and some quick reminders when car sharing:
1. Pitching in gas money is cool. Way cool.
2. Tickets are not being sold at the gate. Make sure everybody in the car has their ticket, or none will be allowed in the gate. Yes, really.
3. When you post to the board, be honest about who you are, what you're bringing, how much (and whether) you can share driving responsibilities, your temperment, expectations, stops you have planned on the way and any special needs. When it comes to ridesharing, surprises suck.
4. Make sure you're comfortable with the person with whom you're driving. Bad vibe? Find another ride. Really.
5. Have fun ... you just might make a friend.

BURNER EXPRESS SHUTTLE BUSES FROM SF & RENO TO BLACK ROCK CITY
In an effort to reduce traffic and limit the environmental impact of our event, Burning Man organizers are offering the Burner Express bus service with pickups in San Francisco and the Reno airport to Black Rock City and back. This service offers early arrival, speedier entrance, ticket pick up, reserved camping and quicker departures.
Burner Express is ideal for participants flying into the event and for Burners involved in art projects and theme camps having their gear hauled in by campmates. Tickets start at $60 one way from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and $95 one way from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Additional charges apply for extra luggage or for a stop at a grocery store in Reno. Departures begin from both locations Saturday, August 24 and return trips begin Friday, August 30.
Large motor coach buses will take Burners to Gerlach, where they will hop on smaller buses for the ride into Black Rock City. There will be a "bus only" lane to sidestep traffic backups at Gate and Greeters, and bus passengers will have their own Will Call station for speedier ticket pick up. (Please note: ONLY Burner Express and Green Tortoise buses are permitted in the bus lane.)
Once inside BRC, bus riders have the option of camping in a reserved camping section on the 6 o'clock access road or taking shuttles out to 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock along G Street.
For more information, see the FAQ on our Burner Express page:

"BURNING MAN - THRIVING IN THE DESERT, FLOURISHING IN THE WORLD" EXHIBIT OPENING IN RENO-TAHOE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN AUGUST
Travelers arriving at Reno-Tahoe International Airport this summer will be treated to a showcase of "material culture" from the Burning Man event and - for those who think it's just an event in the desert - examples of how Burning Man's 10 Principles have permeated culture worldwide.
The display: "Burning Man: Thriving in the Desert, Flourishing in the World" will be on display from early August through mid-October in the airport's recently renovated gallery space between the arrival / departure gates and the security gates.
The exhibit includes two display cases of Burning Man "material culture" including examples of beautiful patches and jewelry designed by participants. A standing case will display San Francisco artist $teven Ra$pa's "Dust Devil" costume. Also included is imagery of art installations brought to the Black Rock Desert from around the world, including New York artist Kate Raudenbush's art piece "Star Seed."

THE BLACK ROCK CITY MUNICIPAL AIRPORT
Want to fly your own private plane into Burning Man? You can do that. In fact, we built an airport on the playa just. for. you. The Black Rock City Municipal Airport has the official FAA designation "88-NV". All the info about flying into BRC (by yourself or via air charter services that do), camping at the airport, and departing can be found on our airport web page:

RIDESHARING FROM RENO TO BLACK ROCK CITY
If you are unable to arrange for means of transportation from Reno to BRC beforehand, you have two well-used rideshare possibilities to BRC:
First option is from the Reno airport, where you may be able to negotiate a ride from fellow Burners renting a car. Check in at Air Playa Info to see if anyone has an extra seat. Chances are, you may also be able to get some of your supplies on the ride too, as most everyone flying in has to get supplies -- be sure and ask.
Your second rideshare option is to go to the busiest pit-stop where Burners driving to BRC go to shop. This rideshare location is 10 minutes from the airport, and open 24 hours.
Save Mart Supermarket
525 Keystone Ave - 775-786-2150
Check in at Air Playa Info to see if there may be other Burners who may be willing to give you a ride there (if not to BRC), or to see if anyone may be willing to carpool a taxi with you.
**Some important things to keep in mind about ridesharing with fellow Burners**
Riders:
- Offering to chip in for gas is helpful if you can.
- Everyone in the vehicle must be wearing a seatbelt -- it's the law.
- Be sure to LEAVE NO TRACE at the rideshare locations.
Drivers:
- Make sure EVERYBODY in the vehicle has their Burning Man ticket, or has one at Will Call. If riders aren't holding a ticket or a will call receipt, we ask you to not bring them to BRC.
Riders and Drivers:
- BE COMFORTABLE with whom you choose to share a ride.

GASSING UP IN WADSWORTH & NIXON
One of the biggest concerns the Washoe County Sheriffs have is that when people are arriving and stop for gas at Bruno's in Gerlach, the traffic backs up past the railroad tracks, and then people trying to get around the backup move into the oncoming traffic lane. And this is bad.
So here's what we'd like you to do if you're coming up Hwy 447 from I80:
1. Get final gas in Fernley, Wadsworth, or Nixon!
2. If Bruno's is full and starting to back up, don't stop on the highway and block the road. Keep driving. If people ARE stopped, don't do risky things like moving into the oncoming traffic lane or stopping on the railroad tracks.
The only good solution is for people to gas up in Fernley, Wadsworth, or Nixon. So please, do that.
**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**
DRIVING THE SPEED LIMIT IS THE NEW RADICAL SELF-EXPRESSION
During Burning Man, there are plenty of law enforcement officers patrolling the routes to the Black Rock Desert, just WAITING for you to speed, so they can write you a nice fat citation. Seriously, we hear this EVERY year: "Wow, you were right, I was barely speeding and I got a ticket."
Right, so don't speed. Like even 3 MPH over. You'll get nailed, we SWEAR. It's just not worth it! And just the right thing to do, caring for the safety of the people, children and pets living in the small towns along the way. Thanks!

HOW TO BEHAVE IF YOU GET PULLED OVER BY LAW ENFORCEMENT
Here's an informative video that explains how to behave if you're pulled over by a law enforcement officer en route to the playa (or anywhere else, for that matter). It's a great explanation of your Constitutional rights, and how to protect them:

SOME HELPFUL ADVICE FROM THE NEVADA HIGHWAY PATROL
Every year the NHP helps hundreds of Burners who get stranded or otherwise experience problems on the road to and from the event. At a recent meeting they let us know some super helpful tips to avoid the most common problems that Burners experience while on the road:
Balding...
...The NHP reports that bald tires are a significant factor in accidents and break downs so be sure to check your tires before you leave for the event and replace those old tires if you need to.
Too tired to drive...
...The NHP reports that of the accidents that relate to Burning Man traffic, the number one reported cause of these accidents was FATIGUE. Be sure to be well rested and sober (duh), with a copilot to help to keep you company while you drive. Behind the wheel is no place for a playa hangover.
Driving on empty..
Coming to Black Rock City on Interstate 80? Get fuel in Reno, Wadsworth, Nixon, or Fernley. Coming from the Pacific Northwest? Gas up in Cedarville. Otherwise you risk being backed up with traffic for miles waiting for gas in Gerlach or Empire, and simply running out of gas. Empire and Gerlach CANNOT handle the kind of traffic created by fueling lines, which causes traffic hazards. And it will only be worse on the way OUT of Burning Man. Gas up fully at the recommended filling cities beforehand. And this goes for fuel for RV generators as well. One more thing--figure out what kind of fuel your generator uses BEFOREHAND. Most generators do NOT run on gasoline.
No camping ...
Camping is prohibited in Gerlach. Please respect the local citizens.
Going for broke...
...If your vehicle breaks down please carefully pull off the road to allow traffic to continue past you safely. NHP may push your vehicle off the road if needed but if you can safely coast or push your vehicle onto a gravel shoulder, please do so.
Soft shoulders...
...State Route 447 and the other rural highways have *very* soft shoulders and the chance of getting stuck is much higher than you expect, especially in the soft sands around Pyramid lake. Only pull over if you absolutely have to, and if at all possible only on fully developed gravel shoulders. It's also easy to roll a vehicle if you hit these soft shoulders at high speeds. Be CAREFUL.
Secure your load!...
...Be sure loads on your roof rack or trailers are ABSOLUTELY secured to your vehicle. **This especially applies at the end of the event on the way home** when you may be tired and less careful about how you pack and secure your belongings and trash. Taking a couple of extra minutes to fully secure your load for the sail home is a lot easier and safer for you and for other travelers. Finally, Leaving No Trace both on AND off the playa is absolutely critical to the event's future. So, make triple sure EVERYTHING is secure! Locations to take that trash and recycling is on the way, see below on Exodus Trash and Recycling (EXTRA) locations...
Hurry up and wait...
...the wait for tow trucks can be very long (think hours and hours). Sitting on the side of the road is a major bummer so please be careful.

PYRAMID LAKE BURNING MAN TRAVEL ADVISORY
The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe writes to say:
"The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe would like to invite all Burning Man travelers to its native and sovereign lands. The Tribe would also like to advise all travelers to SLOW DOWN AND KEEP YOUR DISTANCE while traveling through the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation. All of the State Routes on the reservation are two lane roads and the Tribe would like motorists to turn on their headlights during the day and night, and be aware of the dangers associated with high speeds on two lane highways.
Due to the number vehicles traveling to and from the Burning Man Festival, motorists are advised to be extra cautious while traveling on any of the State Routes that run through the reservation. The entire Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation is an open range area for livestock; motorists are to be cautious of livestock that may be on the highways. While passing though the Tribal communities of Wadsworth and Nixon, the Tribe requests that motorists be cautious of children and courteous to Tribal Members that may attempt to cross the highway, or that are accessing their homes, businesses, or Tribal Services. For more important Burning Man travel information please visit http://www.pyramidlake.us.

VENDORS
Throughout the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, motorists may find several vendors along the sides of the highway. The Tribe encourages all visitors to support Tribal Member vendors and other businesses located on the reservation. Motorists are advised to use caution and to not be distracted by the vendors while driving on the highways. These vendors may be selling food or supplies to travelers en route to the Burning Man event on the reservation. The Tribe reminds travelers that all the vendors are required to meet all Federal Health Code standards and other Tribal regulations.
TRASH AND RECYCLING RESOURCES
Every year the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe reports large amounts of garbage littering their roadways during Exodus. And every year Burning Man's Playa Restoration team sends crews to pick this trash up. This year, plan on taking your recycling and trash to one of the 24-hour locations in the Exodus Trash and Recycling Network. Go here for further info:
http://bit.ly/LViq00
FIREWORKS
This year the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe is selling Fireworks that you may shoot ONLY on the reservation. They are illegal everywhere else, including in Black Rock City. Please be advised, if you purchase fireworks on the reservation, you must shoot them on the reservation, and only in very specific locations. You must be over 18 and shooting hours are between dusk and midnight.
PYRAMID LAKE CAMPING AND DAY-USE
Pyramid Lake is a beautiful ancient lake at the heart of the Paiute Tribe Reservation, with plenty of day-use and camping opportunities before or after a week on the hot dusty playa. All day-use and camping requires Tribal permits Proceeds from permits help support the Tribal Government, and water quality and environmental programs that protect the unique ecosystem of Pyramid Lake year round. The Tribe advises all travelers to know that the north and east side of the lake, Anaho Island National Wildlife Refuge, The Pyramid, and The Needles are off-limits to everyone but tribe members. The Tribe also advises that souvenir and artifact hunting are not permitted. To purchase camping, day-use, and other permits online, or for a list of permit locations and additional information about Pyramid Lake, please visit www.pyramidlake.us.
PYRAMID LAKE ART SHOW
The Paiute Tribe invites all Burning Man participants to stop and experience the unique art and culture on display at the Pyramid Lake Arts and Crafts Show, Saturday and Sunday, August 24-25, at the Pyramid Lake Museum and Visitors Center (709 State Street in Nixon, across from The Nixon Store). Native American artists will be displaying and selling their artwork & crafts. The traveler will also find an invaluable experience in checking out the Museum itself with breathtaking architecture and a remarkable display of the history and culture of the Tribe, lake, and land. If you are camping on Pyramid Lake or otherwise have the time, don't miss out on this special arts show at the Museum that will leave you with an appreciation for the unique arts and culture of Pyramid Lake.
WADSWORTH CAR WASH
The Sacred Visions Powwow Committee will be sponsoring a carwash during Exodus for travelers next to the Natchez Elementary School, just as you enter Wadsworth on State Route 447. The wash will be available for vehicles of all sizes during daylight hours from August 31-September 3. All funds raised will go to support the 6th Annual Sacred Visions Powwow.
THE PYRAMID LAKE PAIUTE TRIBE WOULD LIKE TO WISH ALL BURNING MAN TRAVELERS TO HAVE A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE TRIP."

ENJOY "AMERICA'S SOLAR HIGHWAY", COURTESY OF BLACK ROCK SOLAR
Since its inception, Black Rock Solar (www.blackrocksolar.org) has been busy spreading free solar power arrays throughout northern Nevada. In fact, they've been so good at it that Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons declared Highway 447 "America's Solar Highway".
A total of 12 solar arrays have been built by Black Rock Solar under the Solar Generations program along the 75-mile length of Nevada State Highway 447 between Wadsworth and Gerlach, totaling 630 kilowatts for an average of 8.4 kW of energy produced per mile, believed to be the largest amount of distributed solar power per mile of any highway in the country.
So as you're cruising up Route 447, keep an eye out ... you'll see 'em.

GETTING INTO BRC: THE GATE
With an expected population of over 60,000, we are expecting our busiest year yet at the Gate. Wait times during the first 24-36 hours after opening could be 5 or more hours. Do your part to be prepared and know the process, and you will help make it easier for everyone.
In 2013 the eight-day Special Recreation Permit is from 6pm on Sunday, August 25th to 6pm on Monday, September 2nd. The Gate will open at 6pm this year. Please do not show up early.
The Gate Crew works VERY hard in sometimes NIGHTMARISH conditions throughout the entire event, as they meticulously process EVERY SINGLE PARTICIPANT who comes into Black Rock City. The Gate has its own unique culture: part theater, a lot of pride and deep-seated professional integrity ... and beneath every tough exterior beats the soft heart of a very good person. Here are some tips on what to expect at the Gate when arriving at Black Rock City and how to make the process go as smoothly as possible for you.
1. On your way to Burning Man, please drive safely and be considerate while passing through local towns. Speeding, parking on highway shoulders and unsafe driving are safety hazards and could threaten the future of the event. We are guests in their community, so be extra courteous and obey the law.
2. Plan your arrival so that you show up at the Gate after the 6pm opening. We cannot allow people who show up early to wait in town (see #1 above). When the Gate opens, we give priority to those who are coming off the highway....those who showed up on time. This means that if you show up early and we have to stage you somewhere, you will get in later than if you showed up on time.
3. During peak traffic periods we will be controlling traffic with highway flaggers along Hwy 447 at the Gerlach gas station. Past experience has shown that long lines at the gas station have caused unsafe conditions. Once the line reaches the edge of the gas station, you will be instructed to continue driving. Don't risk it! Fill up before Gerlach.
4. As you approach the Burning Man entrance from the highway, tune your radio to 95.1 FM for the Gate Advisory Radio Station! We will be broadcasting up to date info about the entry process.
5. Drive no more than 10mph on Gate Road. Seriously. Speeding causes ruts in the playa surface. And the dust you create when driving more than 10mph can make it hard for you to see our volunteers in the lanes and for other drivers to see you. Play it safe.
6. Stay in your vehicle. If you need to go to will call, your entire vehicle should go with you. Don't risk losing your friends (yes, it happens).
7. About 1/4 mile before you reach the Gate you will come to a set of small kiosks we call the 'Apex.' During busy times there will be Gate staff here to direct you. There is an empty zone just after the "Apex" that will allow vehicles in ANY lane to turn into the Will Call lot.
8. Upon reaching the Gate your tickets will be scanned and torn, and your car searched. Plan ahead for the search and know what items are prohibited.http://bit.ly/f8k6v
9. Be patient. Chances are good that many other Burners will decide to show up when you do, and with a two lane rural highway leading to a single entry point, expect to wait. If the weather gets bad we may have to close the Gate.
10. Carpool! Fewer vehicles = less traffic = shorter wait times = better for the environment. Winning!
11. If you don't have a ticket, do not show up at the event. There is a closure order issued by the BLM and you must have a valid ticket to be inside of it. Tickets will NOT be sold at the gate. If you are at the Gate without a ticket, you will be told to leave or risk citation from the BLM.
12. Be well informed: read up to date info on the Burning Man website and in the JRS. Know what items are prohibited, know what you need for early arrivals, and if you are a camp or project expecting deliveries, know about that process far in advance.
13. Educate your fellow Burners by sharing this information with your campmates and friends. During your entry and exit, help fellow Burners through the process by respectfully teaching them the *right* way to do it.

EXODUS
In prior years, wait times peaked at about 6-9 hours just to get from camp to the highway. Plan for another 3 hours or more from the start of the highway to Reno. These times could increase if there are accidents or other traffic issues, including too many people trying to leave BRC all at once, as we saw in 2011. It's important that you know what to expect and plan accordingly. To state it simply, we cannot get vehicles off of the playa any *faster* than we already are.
Make an Exodus plan! Last year's Exodus was much smoother than in 2011 for one main reason: participants spread out their departures over a longer time frame, thus reducing how much traffic was exiting at any given time. We can do it again! Make a departure plan for your camp, whether you are a camp of just a few people or a few hundred. Create an internal schedule that spreads out the departures of each vehicle over multiple days and times, especially during non-peak times if possible. Have camp mates who are eager to beat the rush? Leave before the Man burn. Part of a theme camp or art project? Stay until Tuesday for strike and MOOPing!
"When is it best to leave?" AVOID PEAK TRAVEL TIMES ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY! Generally any night from 2am to dawn, Monday night after dark, or yes, Saturday before the Man burns are the best times to leave. This does not mean there will not be a line, you should always plan and be prepared to wait.
For a full list of frequently asked questions about Exodus, go here: http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/gate_faq.html
Above all, keep that playa vibe with you! No sense getting road rage, cutting in front of your fellow community members, or trying to dangerously pass cars on the highway in order to save a few minutes. Take your time, have fun, and remember, Leave no Trace and the community spirit do not stop once you leave Black Rock City.
Tips for making your Exodus experience as smooth as it can be:
1. How do you pick the best time to leave? Listen to the community. If everyone you talk to says they are staying to watch the Temple burn on Sunday night, then Monday is going to have very long wait times. If there is a major storm predicted for the weekend (as was the case in 2010), then a bunch of people will probably leave on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
2. If you are looking for a shorter wait time, your best bet is to leave on days other than Sunday and Monday. If you are part of a theme camp or art project, schedule your tear down so that your crew leaves after Monday.
3. Listen to 95.1 FM (the Gate Advisory Radio Station) for specific info about Exodus when you are headed out. BMIR, 94.5 FM, will broadcast general info about Exodus and current wait times.
4. Upon leaving your camp, head straight to L Street at the back of the city. This is the most direct route to Gate Road and helps to prevent the city center from getting too clogged up.
5. Use all available lanes on Gate Road until you hit the back-up. If you see that there are 8 lanes, but see only 6 lines of cars and 2 lanes completely open, USE THEM. All lanes on Gate Road during Exodus are outbound lanes, always, always, always.
6. If the vehicle in front of you is stopped, and traffic in front of it has moved on in a Pulse, go around the stopped vehicle. Do not change lanes! Do not merge into the lane next to you. Go around the stopped vehicle, and stay in your same lane. (All Gate Road lanes are 20 feet wide for this reason.)
7. If a lane is open next to you because a vehicle is stopped or broken down, please ignore your inclination and do not fill into it unless an Exodus staff member directs you to. That open space is for the people behind the stopped vehicle! If you merge into an open lane in the back-up, you are making the system unfair.
8. Ultimately we must rely on the community to police itself and ensure that their fellow participants are respecting the process. If you see people cheating the system, say something! There is no way for us to monitor all of Gate Road for lane changing...nor do we want to be the traffic police. YOU can help make it fair by informing people about the process and making sure they follow it.
9. Any vehicles found to be outside the perimeter of BRC or Gate Road are in violation of the Event Closure Area. Closure Area violations are ticketed by the BLM. They really are out there watching and you will be ticketed. Then you will be returned to the back of the Exodus line. Sounds fun, right?

EXODUS TRAFFIC PULSING
We will implement Pulsing again this year on Sunday and Monday, generally from 10am until 2am (or until the need dissipates). Pulsing is a system of moving vehicles at regular intervals toward the highway on Gate Road to avoid the long slow creep that challenges the sanity of even the most patient among us. With Pulsing, vehicles stop and turn off their engines. Then, every hour, vehicles are "pulsed" a mile forward all at once.
Pulsing does NOT get you out of the city more quickly, it just lets you take a break from driving. During Pulsing, expect to be stopped along Gate Road for periods of time. Listen to BMIR 94.5FM or the Gate Advisory Radio Station 91.5FM for Exodus and Pulsing info.
Make the most out of your Exodus experience! Pulsing is the perfect time to create ONE HOUR NEIGHBORHOODS (see a participant's explanation of this idea here: http://apictureofit.com/2011/09/burning-man-2011-exodus/.) and ensure your fellow Burners have properly secured their loads.
Want more info on how Pulsing works? Check it out here:

Happy Leaving.

DO NOT PASS ... DO NOT GET KILLED
We were going say this ourselves, but Leslie, who wrote in asking us to remind participants about this important issue a few years ago, is pretty spot on, and she has particular cred in this department, as she notes: "I was struck head-on by a person passing and my car was left three feet shorter. I suffered unbelieveable pain, spent time in a wheelchair and in physical rehabilitation as the result of his one bad choice to pass. Much of what was good in my life has been taken from me as a result."
So ... please take a moment to read and consider her invaluable advice ... since we prefer our Burners alive, thank you. She writes:
"Please, while driving to and from the event do not pass AT ALL between the freeway and the event. Passing simply isn't safe and can lead to fatal head-on collisions. Full-size 18 wheelers regularly use these roads and go the opposite directions from the main traffic at high speeds; they are not watching out for you at all.
You simply cannot count on other drivers in a long line of cars bumper to bumper leaving Burning Man to hang back and let you back into the line when an oncoming vehicle is coming at you head-on at 55-85 mph. The delay for just not passing and patiently following the car in front of you may be only a few additional minutes. The cost of passing may be your life.
Besides, when everyone is in a line to leave Burning Man it is just selfish and pointless to pass an entire line of cars as if they didn't want to go faster. We all have to put up with slowly leaving the playa.
One year while leaving Burning Man I saw a catastrophic accident as the result of someone passing. I've also seen numerous near misses that would have resulted in severe head-on collisions, some with full size 18 wheelers going over 40 mph, that would have killed everyone in the car.
Many people who go to Burning Man just do not understand or appreciate the risk."

FLYING OUT OF RENO AFTER BURNING MAN - REMEMBER THIS
A couple important reminders:
Please remember to NOT bring any of your garbage back to the Reno Airport, including rental car agencies. Dispose of your recycling and trash between BRC and the Reno Airport. Go here for info:
http://bit.ly/LViq00
Second, there are several items you may not think of that are prohibited on airplanes -- stuff you bought for your life in BRC. Here's a list from the Travel Security Administration:
http://1.usa.gov/QS8aaf
Finally, also remember that not everyone on the plane with you will be a Burner. Some may appreciate if you had showered beforehand and are fully clothed. Yeah, we know, but just saying, we've heard some complaints in the past, and it's in everyone's -- other passengers, your fellow burners, and maybe even Burning Man's -- interest for you to be playa-dust and -smell free and fully clothed as possible. If you are looking for a place to shower, some locations on the way to the airport can be found here:
http://bit.ly/19e4OYU
**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**
WHERE TO TAKE YOUR TRASH AND RECYCLING!!
Leaving No Trace is absolutely critical to Burning Man's survival. Really critical. Errant trash on the sides of the roads and other littering seriously impacts the time, money, resources, and support of our neighbors. Littering is not only illegal and cause for prosecution -- it makes Burning Man, and all of us, look irresponsible. And if we want Burning Man to continue, we can't have any of that. Period.
Managing your trash and recycling successfully is actually really easy with a little bit of preparation. Here are a few pointers to help ensure your clean Exodus home, our future return to the Black Rock Desert, and our track record as the largest Leave No Trace event on the planet:
After you've MOOP-ed your camp one last time, stop and make extra sure that your load is FULLY SECURED TO YOUR VEHICLE. You absolutely cannot have any bags or bits flying off as you're headed home. Check *again* during Exodus Pulsing Operations -- and remember to check neighboring cars too!
Second, there are 24-hour trash and recycling disposal options in all directions from BRC during Exodus. Check out the Exodus Trash and Recycling (EXTRA) network locations here:
http://bit.ly/LViq00
You'll find other roadside trash vendors during Exodus in Gerlach, Nixon, and Wadsworth, and some of them will also be open 24 hours. They'll have signs up so you can't miss them. Not only will they help take a load off, supporting them also supports local economies.
**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**
RENTING A VEHICLE? CLEAN IT THOROUGHLY ... INCLUDING THE ENGINE
If you're renting a car or RV, you want to clean the living hell out of it, INCLUDING the engine ... you might get dinged for an extra fee if you don't. To clean the engine, you can use one of those air blower hose things at a gas station. And, returning rental cars in bad shape reflects badly on our community and risks our people's future ability to rent cars.

Thanks!
**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe will have both of its convenience stores -- the I-80 Smokeshop (Wadsworth) and the Nixon Store (Nixon) -- open for extended hours during peak travel times, and fully stocked for the convenience of travelers to Burning Man.
The I-80 Smokeshop located off exit #43 in Wadsworth offers gas, ice, food, alcohol, ATM, Native Crafts, pay phone, cheap cigarettes, and many other supplies needed for the Burning Man event. For more information about the I-80 Smokeshop please visit http://www.plpt.nsn.us/tstores/i80.htm.
The Nixon Store is located at the intersection of State Route 447 and State Route 446 in Nixon offers gas, ice, food, ATM, pay phone, and many other supplies needed for the Burning Man event. For more information about the Nixon Store please visit http://www.plpt.nsn.us/tstores/nixonstore.htm.
There are also lake tours, RV Parks and campgrounds, a restaurant and saloon, greywater disposal services, auto/tow service, and a car-wash to be found on the reservation. Check out all the information here:
Wadsworth - http://bit.ly/qYFca6
Nixon and Pyramid Lake - http://bit.ly/qnn6Um

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

First off, thank you for staying patient through the barrage of Jack Rabbit Speaksness we've been cramming in your inbox this week. There's just so much to tell you! Next week we'll have really important one about Traffic & Transportation ... stay tuned for that.
So after a couple special editions earlier this week, we're back today with another one packed with contributions from our far-flung contributors, AND some pretty dope news! Specifically:
Burning Man is very excited to announce the Burner Express, kicking off its inaugural year, offering shuttle bus service from San Francisco and Reno to Black Rock City and back. This is an effort to keep Burning Man sustainable by taking on two of the biggest challenges that face our event as we continue to grow: environmental impact and traffic. We're starting small this year, and there may be some bumps in the road (har!), but we're hopeful this program can and will expand in the future. So yeah, get on board! (And we appreciate your patience in advance as any kinks are worked out of the system.) Learn more below.
We're also excited to tell you about a super special event happening next Wednesday in San Francisco! For the first time ever, "This is Burning Man" author Brian Doherty will join Burning Man co-founders Larry Harvey and Michael Mikel (aka Danger Ranger) for an exciting evening exploring the past, present and future of Burning Man. The event kicks off July 24 at 7pm at Z Space Theater on Florida Street. For more info and to reserve tickets please see: http://tinyurl.com/thisisburningmanevent.
We hope your playa preparations are progressing apace, and that you're having a ball doing it ... after all, preparation is part of the experience too, y'know!
The Man burns in 42 days!

TO FLAME BUSES NOT AUTHORIZED TO ENTER BLACK ROCK CITY IN 2013
Burning Man organizers want participants to know the To Flame bus operated by Rally Bus will not be granted access to Black Rock City in 2013.
Companies providing bus service to the Burning Man event are required to secure permits from Burning Man and the Bureau of Land Management. To Flame and Rally Bus have not secured these permits.
Additionally, Burning Man issued a Request for Proposals for a bus service to the event earlier this year. To Flame submitted a proposal, but was not selected based on gaps in their operational plan to support the event, previous track record and negative feedback about their bus service from operators and participants.
During the RFP process Burning Man advised To Flame to not sell any additional tickets. To Flame was not selected as the bus service vendor, but continued to advertise bus service during and after the RFP process. On June 26 Burning Man issued a Cease & Desist letter to the company.
Participants have a few options for public transportation to the playa, including the new BRC-supported Burner Express bus service operating from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. For more information on options, visithttp://www.burningman.com/preparation/travel_info/.

HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE BURN
Sean writes:
"Do you remember how ill prepared you were for your first Burning Man, despite all your friends' best efforts? While it is true that nothing can truly prepare you for the awesomeness that is Burning Man, it is important to know what to bring, the right attitude to have, what the culture is like (and how it evolved), and what your rights are on the Playa.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Burn is a comprehensive event guide to Burning Man, detailing everything from the history and evolution of the event to traveling to and from (and around in) Black Rock City to building a camp (wiring said camp for solar power, grey water disposal, etc.) and surviving the Black Rock Desert (what to bring, the culture, how to change a bicycle tire, etc.) for a week. I have spent the last year in close collaboration with Burning Man and doing lots of painstaking research to bring you this work. Enjoy!

CENTER CAMP CAFE'S SPEAKER SERIES CALL FOR PROPOSALS: A FEW SPOTS LEFT!
Help pry, pump and pummel folks dusty heads via Center Camp Cafe's Speaker Series. Slots are going fast, so please submit your proposal now.
The theme this year is 'Manufacturing Nostalgia'! We have provided prompts at the bottom to get you thinking about how your research, project and experience may fit under it.
Of course, we accept proposals that do not fit within this theme umbrella, or that of this year's event (Cargo Cult), but those that do are given review and scheduling priority.
General Burning Man ethos and values must be upheld: no promotions of products, corporations, political candidates, or rigid partisanship.
Description:
Manufacturing Nostalgia
Nostalgia can come in many forms, from a personal longing or 'sickness' to a societal yearning for a different time (which may or may not have ever existed), and a myriad more incarnations on that spectrum. Nostalgia frequently is regarded as opposed to modernity/the future and progress and yet, it can be simultaneously looking toward the past, informed by the current and inevitably shapes our future. What and how we interact with nostalgia is key to looking at our relationships, from an individual, societal, national, global and universal perspective to the world we want to make. Nostalgia itself has a utopian dimension. What is your take?
For more information on the topic and how to submit a proposal for the speaker series, please click here: http://bit.ly/18ILG3n
Potential Prompts:
• 'It was better last year' a journey of Burning Man nostalgia, the challenge of changing relationships
• The difference between 'remake' and recycle culture
• LOLCats; our distraction from the broken promises of Industrialism
• Nostalgia and the economy: Privatizing profits while subsiding the risk

HELP THE STORY PORTAL DELIVER THEIR INTERACTIVE STORYTELLING STAGE TO BURNING MAN 2013!
Robert writes:
"The Story Portal invites you to be a part of our story! We are revving up to install our storytelling stage at Burning Man 2013. We hit the road on August 17th, so we please need your help NOW to make it possible!
www.thestoryportal.org
We will be providing the opportunity for 58,000 plus attendees to connect with each other through the power of story. While we are excited to deliver our stage as an aesthetically impressive art piece, we are most excited by the prospect of having a platform like Burning Man to proliferate the Story Portal concept. The Story Portal aims to connect individuals to the vast world of shared experience through spontaneous and true storytelling. The concept is simple - spin the wheel and tell us a story about the topic it lands on. Topics include 'When It All Changed', 'All In The Family', 'Breakdown To Breakthrough' and 'Overcoming Fear'. By delivering the piece to Burning Man we are placing ourselves in a position to gain fantastic awareness for the greater mission and goals of The Story Portal -- connecting individuals to the vast world of shared experience, at Burning Man and far beyond.
For many months our talented volunteer crew have been working diligently toward the goal of taking The Story Portal to Burning Man. We have poured our heart and soul into the project in order to reach this point. The experience we all had at our regional Burn, Apogaea, was validation of how effective our story wheel and stage is at fostering community and providing meaningful and memorable experiences for festival attendees. The platform of Burning Man is the perfect next step to demonstrate the power of The Story Portal concept. Thank you for your support and come visit us in the 7:30 Portal!"

GIFT - THE DOCUMENTARY
Robin writes:
"Canadian doc-maker developing new film/crossmedia project on GIFT.
Looking for stories to follow - larger-than-life gift undertakings/adventures - especially those illustrating the circular nature of gifting & re-gifting - coming to Burning Man 2013 (or possibly 2014). Would love your thoughts & input- robinsoleil@gmail.com
GIFT is a feature-length documentary and crossmedia project inspired by Lewis Hyde's classic bestseller The Gift. It chronicles gift-based cultures, proposing a radically different conception of society. Challenging the logic of global capitalism, and growing in influence among philosophers and thinkers, these societies may, more than ever, have something to teach us.
GIFT interweaves character-driven stories, from Papua New Guinea's Trobriand Islands, following the circular story of a gift as it travels from one island to the next, to North America's Pacific Northwest Coast, as the community undertakes the elaborate preparations for a potlatch; to supporting stories in India (a pyau drinking water stand by the roadside), West Africa (dama gift culture among women), Naples, Italy (home of the "suspended coffee" tradition, in the face of rising unemployment and economic crisis) to Burning Man.
Is life about getting, or giving? What if we measured success by our ability to give? As the limits of growth, environmental destruction and the law of diminishing returns bring modern society to the point of crisis, GIFT proposes an alternative. It takes us inside cultures practicing a radically different approach to property and ownership, which have preserved these values as the global culture evolved in an entirely different direction."

BATHROOM BEACONS -- BECAUSE YOU NEED TO PEE *NOW*
When we're selecting which projects to highlight in our Support a Project section, we look for ones with an extraordinarily high impact on our community. If this doesn't qualify, we don't know what would. Cuz yeah, finding a potty in the open playa at night? Hard. And you ALL need to at one point. So:
"In 2012, the Bathroom Beacons made it easier for the denizens of BRC to find their way to the potties at night-- and we're excited to be bringing the Beacons back this year-- brighter, blinkier, and more fun then ever! As such, we are running a Kickstarter campaign to support our plans for the Beacons. Here's what's in store:
Our flagship from 2012, 'Welcome to Fabulous' was selected as an honorarium project this year. We'll be repainting the wood and adding a new marquee to the trim.
We have awesome upgrades planned for 'The Toilet Bowl,' including an improved ball return and full-color LED strips lighting the lanes; as well as plans for a BRC bowling league championship. (Start forming your teams now!)
And we have a new beacon for 2013-- 'Twisted Bristles,' a 15 foot tall toilet bowl brush. The brush head features over 1200 bristles made of 18" acrylic rods, lit by LEDs dancing in a variety of blissful patterns. The prototype in the Beacons laboratory looks amazing-- this may be everyone's new favorite.
We hope you'll consider supporting the upgrades and infrastructure for the Bathroom Beacons via our Kickstarter-- the bladder you save, may be your own!

SUBJECT: Your Camp Name
MESSAGE: The name(s) and email(s) for your camp's music lineup guru(s) and/or my ultimate contact points for your camp.
I'd love to have a live music pull out and/or sound art car pull out in the guide if enough camps submit information. So, please contact me with your lyrical loveliness. Though it helps and many camps do it, yours doesn't have to have hourly slotted schedules.

Burning Man co-founders Larry Harvey and Michael Mikel (aka Danger Ranger) join "This is Burning Man" author Brian Doherty for an evening exploring the past, present and future of Burning Man, July 24 at Z Space Theater in San Francisco.
'This is Burning Man' is an insightful and provocative look at the first 20 years of Burning Man history. The book traces Burning Man's bohemian roots in groups like the Suicide Club and Cacophony Society, revealing Burner culture's avant garde underpinnings and painting a fascinating picture of the evolution of Black Rock City through the 90s and early 2000s. An 18-year Burner, author Brian Doherty is a senior editor at Reason magazine and the author of several books. His work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Mother Jones and dozens of other publications.
Ticket sales benefit the nonprofit Burning Man Project (www.burningmanproject.org), dedicated to extending Burning Man culture into the world. Pricing is "pay what you can" to benefit the Project: $20, $30 or $50. Premium seating at $125 includes "This is Burning Man" hard cover book signed by the presenters. $100 of this is tax deductible.
Z Space Theater is at 450 Florida Street in San Francisco. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the presentation begins at 7 p.m. A reception and book signing will take place immediately following the discussion.

FEATHERS ARE BAD BAD BAD, RIGHT? WELL ... MAYBE NOT.
Back in the day, folks would show up at Burning Man with cheap feather boas, and they'd inevitably fall to pieces and blow all over the playa, get stuck on the trash fence, and generally be a super MOOPy pain in the butt for everybody.
So we've kept a warning in the Survival Guide for years to not bring feathers (primarily this was directed at cheap boas, as this predated the headdress and fedora fads), and even had the Gate confiscate feathers and boas and whatnot from people as they enter, to prevent a MOOPocalypse.
But here's the thing ... some feathers are super MOOPy and others, well, aren't. So use your head. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SURE YOUR STUFF DOESN'T BECOME MOOP.
Whether it's a costume, or a vehicle, or an art installation, your food, your camp, your bike, your trinkets, whatever, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SURE YOUR STUFF DOESN'T BECOME MOOP.
So be smart. Be self-reliant. Use good judgment and be careful about what you do and don't bring (and wear) to the playa. If you want to wear feathers, OK ... but make sure they're attached in way that won't fail, and if you can't do that then don't wear 'em, because it's on YOU if they become MOOP.
And that goes for anything you bring to Black Rock City.

• Environmental nostalgia- the rise of 'localism' and 'primitivism'

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO YOUR VIRGIN BURNER SELF?
This is rad. Awkwürd writes:
"The Virgin Letters Project is coming back to the playa.
Write a letter to the virgin you were. What would you have liked to know? What you have said if you now were sitting in the car with your virgin self as you drove up Gate Road for the first time?
We are collecting letters online and at Regional Burn events. These letters will be delivered on playa to this year's virgins.

RUSSIAN ART PROJECT CRADLE OF MIR NEEDS OUR HELP!
Dude, these guys are FIRST TIME BURNERS coming from RUSSIA with their project -- so their local community is rather limited. Let's show 'em what Burners are about ... help 'em out if you can.
"Our project needs your help!
We started 22 days ago and with only 6 days left we have raised 36% of the goal.
I think our major problem (besides a somewhat lengthy video) is that most of us are first time burners and we don't know as many people in the burner community. The people we reached are mostly from the Russian community of burners and we wanted to ask you if you could tell the community about us.
We would greatly appreciate your help!
The Cradle of 'Mir'.

BE IN THE 8TH ANNUAL ROCK STAR LIBRARIAN BURNING MAN MUSIC GUIDE
We looooove the Rock Star Librarian. She's at the good work again, we're happy to report. She writes:
"Let's get our booty shakeshake on!
If you are a sound camp, live music camp or other auditorily pleasurable camp and want to be included in the guide so fellow burners find you, send an email to therockstarlibrarian at gmail dot com before August 15 with this information:
SUBJECT: Your Camp Name
MESSAGE: The name(s) and email(s) for your camp's music lineup guru(s) and/or my ultimate contact points for your camp.
I'd love to have a live music pull out and/or sound art car pull out in the guide if enough camps submit information. So, please contact me with your lyrical loveliness. Though it helps and many camps do it, yours doesn't have to have hourly slotted schedules.
Submission Deadline: August 15, 2013!
NEWER THAN NEW THIS YEAR:
Please *do not* send lineups directly to this email. I have a newer than last year's new process to gather your awesome info! Once I have your camp contact(s), I'll email the details!
What does it all mean? This new new process means you have more flexibility and control over making your camp's schedule additions, deletions and changes up until the very last moment before deadline, August 15th, 2013!
The guide will be available for download *the week before Gate opens* via my Facebook Fan Page at http://on.fb.me/15qlHKI
and Twitter at https://twitter.com/rockstarlibn
Like my page and/or follow me to get instant notification when the guide is ready for you!
PS. The Time to Burn iOS/Android app will be back this year, exclusively including the RSL Music Guide, so Like the page, download the app, prepare for TTITD! facebook.com/TimeToBurnApp

"THIS IS BURNING MAN" EVENT WITH LARRY HARVEY, DANGER RANGER, BRIAN DOHERTY - SAN FRANCISCO, CA - JULY 24
