FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Everyone has to get supplies of one sort or another in the towns en route to the playa, and we're here to help. We've compiled an impressive (if we do say so ourselves) collection of information and resources available to you on your way to and from BRC, wherever you're coming from.

Whether you want to load up on water, find a tent, grab another costume, get that last shower ... or just take a moment to kiss civilization goodbye, we've got you handled ...

Coming from the West or Southwest (or flying in), we've got Reno covered. From the Northwest, Cedarville. From the East, we got Lovelock and Fernley. From the Southeast, there's Fallon. Then for most travelers, Wadsworth and Nixon, our good neighbors from the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. And finally, when you get up close to the playa, our favorite small desert towns: Gerlach and Empire.

An important note: these communities are our neighbors. We've forged great relationships with them over the years, and frankly, Burning Man couldn't continue without them. Please pay them the utmost respect on your way through. Show them some love, and remember your actions represent all Burners. When patronizing a local business, rest area or parking lot, please be respectful and courteous. And LEAVE NO TRACE. The future of Burning Man relies on it.

Finally, find everything you need to know about transportation, travel and traffic to and from Black Rock City.

The Man burns in 31 days!

PREPAR FOR BURNING MAN

Reno Information and Resources

The Reno area is the nearest major metropolitan area to Black Rock City, 2.5 hours away.

If you plan to get any or all of the supplies you need in Reno or simply stay overnight, we have a big section on our website PACKED with information on all of the important local resources -- supermarkets, water, hardware, curiosity shops, recycling, trash and greywater disposal, hotels, restaurants, transportation, shipping, favorite spots ... you name it. And all mapped out for your navigational planning. Bookmark it on your mobile device!

These pages are painstakingly updated each year by a team of local Burners who know whereof they speak (hats off to them!). Check it out.

Reno-Tahoe International Airport

Burning Man is the busiest time of year for the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, with over 15,000 Burners coming through on their way to and from the playa. If you're one of them, we've got RTIA information that will help make your airport experience smooth.

From the Northwest — Cedarville & Alturas

The town of Cedarville, CA is a great place to stop and get supplies from the northwest, and your last for 85 miles. The community really supports us and looks forward to seeing us every year.

Burners and are warmly welcomed to participate in the Modoc County Fair in Cedarville August 21-24, and in the Town Parade on August 24. Get to know our neighbors, show off your art and mutant vehicles at this family-friendly event.

Information on the parade, fair and Cedarville resources can be found here.

Also, a special note to all northbound travelers during Exodus:

The Cedarville Rancheria Tribe's Rabbit Traxx store is taking part in the Exodus Trash and Recycling Network again this year, so you can take all your trash and recycling here after Burning Man.

From the East — Lovelock

Set on the western edge of "Cowboy Country," Lovelock -- the County Seat of Pershing County, the county wherein BRC is located -- is a major pit-stop on I-80 to look forward to if you are traveling from the east.

It's also your last chance for 70 miles until Fernley, where you will veer north off to the playa. Great place to stop, get gas, food, supplies, a bed for the night and show our dear neighbors some love.

Get all the details here.

From the Southeast — Fallon

Fallon is your first major town after traveling hundreds of miles across Nevada, whether from Las Vegas or via Highway 50.

Many resources can be found in this very hospitable desert oasis, and we've got them listed here.

From the South — Fernley

Your last town to find major supplies within 100 miles of Black Rock City, Fernley is very supportive of Burning Man with some great things to offer.

BRC's Proximate Neighbors — Wadsworth, Nixon & Pyramid Lake

Most travelers pass through the towns of Wadsworth and Nixon on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation on their way to Burning Man. The Tribe is very supportive of Burning Man and hospitable to travelers. Check out all the information and resources here:

Wadsworth
Nixon and Pyramid Lake

PYRAMID LAKE

Pyramid Lake is a beautiful ancient lake at the heart of the Paiute Tribe Reservation, with plenty of day-use and camping opportunities for before and/or after the hot dusty playa.

NOTE: All day-use and camping requires permits! Proceeds from permits help support the Tribal Government, and water quality and environmental programs that protect the unique ecosystem of Pyramid Lake year round. The Tribe advises all travelers that the north and east side of the lake, Anajo Island, The Pyramid, and The Needles, are off-limits to everyone but Tribe members. The Tribe also advises that souvenir and artifact hunting are not permitted. To purchase camping, day-use, and other permits online, or for a list of permit locations and additional information about Pyramid Lake, please visit www.pyramidlake.us.

PYRAMID LAKE ART SHOW

The Paiute Tribe invites all Burning Man participants to stop and experience the unique art and culture on display at the Pyramid Lake Arts and Crafts Show, Saturday August 23, from 10am-4pm, at the Pyramid Lake Museum and Visitors Center (709 State Street in Nixon, across from The Nixon Store). Native American artists will be displaying and selling their artwork & crafts. The traveler will also find an invaluable experience in checking out the Museum itself with breathtaking architecture and a remarkable display of the history and culture of the Tribe, lake and land. If you are camping on Pyramid Lake or otherwise have the time, don't miss out on this special arts show at the Museum that will leave you with an appreciation for the unique arts and culture of Pyramid Lake.

CAR WASH

The Sacred Visions Powwow Committee will be sponsoring a car wash during Exodus for travelers next to the Natchez Elementary School, just as you enter Wadsworth on State Route 447. The wash will be available for vehicles of all sizes during daylight hours from August 30-September 2. All funds raised will go to support the Sixth Annual Sacred Visions Powwow.

TRAVEL ADVISORY

The Tribe advises all travelers to slow down and keep your distance while traveling through the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation. Obey the posted speed limits and keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. All State Routes on the reservation are two lane roads and the Tribe would like motorists to be aware of the dangers associated with high speeds on two lane highways. The entire Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation is an open range area for livestock. Motorists must be cautious of livestock that may be on the highways. Finally, while passing though the Tribal communities of Wadsworth and Nixon, the Tribe requests that motorists be cautious of children and courteous to Tribal Members that may attempt to cross the road, or that are accessing their homes, businesses or Tribal Services.

BRC's Next Door Neighbors — Gerlach & Empire

Gerlach and Empire are our closest neighbors. In addition to some last-minute or important resources like gas, water, some groceries, booze, clothing and toys, they also have year-round options such as storage, and mutant vehicle and art support.

There's also very important information for all travelers to know about on their way to and from BRC through these towns.

Check it out.

Getting Water in Gerlach

The last place to fill up on water (and thereby the most effective way to reduce your vehicle weight, and thus gas expenditure) is at the Gerlach General Improvement District, the local governing body of Gerlach.

Located at 330 Short Drive, you'll see signs to follow as you enter Gerlach.

The GID will be selling potable water to fill up RVs and water tanks of any size, with the funds going to support the town of Gerlach.

Rates are 50 cents per gallon up to 100 gallons, 45 cents per gallon between 100 and 200 gallons, and 40 cents per gallon for above 200 gallons. 6 and 7-gallon water containers also available (free water with purchase of container). Cash only, but an ATM is onsite.

Open Aug 19-22, 9am-5pm; Aug 23-26, 8am-midnight; and Aug 27-28, 9am-5pm.

You can call them with any questions at 775-557-2601.

EXTRA: Where To Take Your Trash and Recycling!!

Leaving No Trace is absolutely critical to Burning Man's survival. Really critical. Errant trash on the sides of the roads and other littering seriously impacts the time, money, resources and support of our neighbors. Littering is not only illegal and cause for prosecution -- it makes Burning Man, and all of us, look really irresponsible. And if we want Burning Man to continue, we can't have any of that. Period.

In very generous support of our community, several of our neighbors return this year providing 24-hour trash and recycling service along all Exodus routes. Check out the Exodus Trash and Recycling (EXTRA) network locations.

Finally, you'll find other roadside trash vendors during Exodus in Gerlach, Nixon and Wadsworth, and some of them will also be open 24 hours. They'll have signs up so you can't miss them. Not only will they help take a load off, supporting them also supports local economies.

Reno Bonus! The Generator Community Art & Builders Space

The Generator in is an experimental and radically-inclusive art and builders space in the Reno-Sparks area, dedicated to playa-bound and year-round projects. Art installations being built there for Black Rock City include Embrace, Library of Babel, Hayum Temple to Sunlight, Camp Above the Limit!, the Black Rock City Library, and various Souk and other projects and mutant vehicles from around the world.

If you're looking for a place to build close to BRC, check them out.  And they are always in need of volunteers and donations of tools and supplies. Or just stop by and check it out.

Here's our blog post on the Generator!

The Great Depressurization Chamber Music and Art Festival in Reno

Many Burners check into the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno after Burning Man (September 1-3 this year) for off-playa rest, relaxation, community and playa-inspired entertainment. Many of the performers will have been participating in Burning Man, in fact.

Overnight RV parking is available, and hotel rooms may also still be available. Go here for Grand Sierra info and here for info on the events, performers and tickets.

The Temple Burns at 8:00 PM This Year

The Temple is scheduled to burn at 8:00 PM on Sunday, 8/31 this year. The Temple used to burn at 9:00 but in 2012 we decided to move the burn earlier in the evening to help mitigate Exodus traffic but the earlier time caught some by surprise last year. This special burn is an important way to close out the event for many people, so don't miss it if you want to be there!

Black Rock Arts Foundation Joins Burning Man Organization

Burning Man this week announced a reorganization of its arts programs to place more art in communities around the world, make more art available for the annual event in the Black Rock Desert, and create more opportunities for artists and donors.

Black Rock Arts Foundation, which is now a subsidiary of the non-profit Burning Man Project, is joining forces with Black Rock City’s art department to create one program called Burning Man Arts. The mission of Burning Man Arts is to change the paradigm of art from a commodified object to an interactive, participatory, shared experience of creative expression.

Promote Your Theme Camp and Events with a Promo on BMIR!

BMIR, Burning Man Information Radio (94.5FM on the playa and on the internet), is the best way to let the citizens of Black Rock City know about your theme camp, art installation or events. Now that you know your playa address it's the perfect time to create a promo telling every one all about it. BMIR would LOVE to have them in hand before they leave for the playa (August 20) so they can start running them on the air ASAP.

Learn all about how to do it.

A Reminder About Burning Man's Media Policy

Here's a reminder about Burning Man's media policy, how it works, and why it exists.

LATEST NEWS

The Beginning

Mr. Building Black Rock City is back, and that means the rest of us will be back soon, too! John Curley's coverage of the beginning of Burning Man season has begun:

"It’s ironic that Burning Man takes place around a national holiday, because Burning Man has reset the calendar for many people. For them, the year is about the season of the Man; and it culminates when the Man burns on the Saturday of the event. That day is their New Year’s Eve, and after the Temple burns, a new year begins.

So we are into the high holy days now, and to carry the metaphor just a step further, Spike becomes something like Christmas. It’s not so much about the giving of gifts or the birth of a savior, but rather it is more about an affirmation of hope. Maybe in some ways it’s Easter, too, because the feeling of renewal and rebirth is strong."

Worshiping the Cargo Cult

This is a thorough and marvelous photo journal of last year's Burn.

"Watched it burn
Tried to let go
Another year gone, so much change, but seemingly for what?
Battered career
A life in shambles
For what?"

Dear Temple Guardians

Ian MacKenzie has made a bunch of breathtaking Burning Man films in past years, and he's done it again. Carousel, manager of the Temple Guardians, writes:

"Temple Guardians work mostly in silence, holding the sacred space of the Temple around the clock from when it opens until it falls. Vision Weaver, filmmaker and Temple Guardian has been working on a film for the past 9 months about what it is that the Temple Guardians do and how we do it."

Watch the film on his website.

Marco Sanchez 2013 Photo Gallery

This is a great first-timer gallery. The subjects are perfectly chosen (we were particular enamored by the armpit smelling booth). Marco Sanchez writes:

"This is a gallery of some of the photos I took in the 2013 Burning Man. My first time experiencing this megaevent."

Check it out on Flickr.

Summertime Sadness (Skysplitter Remix)

We're putting this in the JRS so we can dance more knowingly when we hear it out in deep playa one night. Sky writes:

"A couple years ago, the JRS staff was kind enough to include my remix of "Take Me Home" by Phil Collins in an issue, so I could share it directly with the rest of my fellow Burners. I now have another solid remix to send to BRC, this time in my absence, as I will not be able to go chase dust storms this year. I hope everyone enjoys the seasonally-themed grooves! Bump it somewhere out deep playa for me! Peace and Love!"

Call for Souk Performers

This year, the Man will be surrounded by a colorful circle of tents known as the Souk. This new public space will be a bustling marketplace where nothing is for sale. The Souk is devoted to gifting, cultural exchange, interactive performance, and a playful commerce in ideas. Stalls in the Souk will be staffed by 25 unmerchant groups from the Burning Man Regional Network. Learn more about the Souk project, including a listing of the Regional participants, here.

To enliven the festive atmosphere of the Souk plaza, caravan master Larry “Al-Ari” Harvey extends his personal invitation to itinerant jugglers, acrobats, fortune tellers, magicians, seers, fakirs, sadhus, strongmen, sword swallowers, fire eaters, dervishes, human statuary, and dancing sign-shakers to bless us with the gift of performance in the Souk throughout the week.

Buddy Bar: Add Mobility to Wheelchairs and Other Rides on the Playa

We love this stuff, and this is a nifty design. Help make Black Rock City accessible for everyone! Idaho Bob writes:

"The playa can be a tough place to get around on 2 wheels, but it's even tougher for our fellow Burners on 3+ wheels. We've come up with a simple DIY solution to hook a friend's bike up to a wheelchair, hand cycle, tricycle, or even another bicycle. It's made of PVC pipe and some bolts, and you can build one for yourself or drop us a line about your mobility ride, and we'll try to make one with you on the Playa at our Mobility Obstacle Course within camp Goodbye Horses on 9:45 and Basara.

You can see an example of the buddy bar with our DIY hand cycle in this video, and here are some photos of the design. If you have questions, email Idaho Bob."

Remote Control BRC is Looking for a Few Good Men and Women

The (brand spankin' new) RCBRC crew writes:

"RCBRC is a new department under the Airport team overseeing registration, training and flying of remote control aircraft at Black Rock City. We’re looking for volunteers to help with registration, hosting the Landing Zone portable RC gathering space, and burn night perimeter support. Here are details on the positions:

R/C HOTTIE
Four congenial volunteers per shift (4:45-6:00) at the ARTery (6:30 and Esplanade) to receive RCBRC applicants and check them in at 5:00pm. Assign pilot a serialized bracelet and affix matched serialized property stickers to transmitter and RC aircraft. Copy those serial numbers onto the application and add them to our spreadsheet. Take photograph showing pilot, transmitter, aircraft and signed application. Put photograph # in spreadsheet and move on to the next pilot.

RC PILOT BRIEFER
Required experience flying RC aircraft with an understanding of AMA rules. The volunteer must be able to clearly convey the RCBRC rules, unique characteristics of flying RC at Burning Man, and be comfortable speaking to individuals as well as small and large groups. Meet at the ARTery (6:30 and Esplanade). Shift runs from 4:45-6:00.

RC MASTER OF CEREMONIES
Three exuberant volunteers per evening. This is a public relations and safety officer in disguise helping to make the Landing Zone a FUN and safe place. Promote good flying practices while aiding in keeping the Landing Zone free of art cars and onlookers. Provide a place to fly so pilots may enjoy flying knowing we are spotting for them. Promote a club like atmosphere. Help participants meet each other. Report unsafe flying to RCBRC Safety Officer. Meet at the ARTery (6:30 and Esplanade) at 5:30pm and go with RCBRC Safety Officer and ARTery placement staff to the RCBRC Landing Zone. Lay out and tack down LED rope light triangle, markers and traffic cones, afterward pack back into truck. Shift ends at 10:30.

PERIMETER
Saturday for Man Burn a team of 16 people will create a safety perimeter surrounding the Landing Zone. This helps pilots concentrate on flying and getting those great aerial videos of the burn we love to see while keeping both spectators and pilots safe. Specific location will be posted at the ARTery prior to Saturday. Shift runs from 8:00-10:00.

If you want to volunteer, fill out the Volunteer Questionnaire on your Burner Profile, specifying your interest in the Airport team. For scheduling questions, email Mile High. For specific volunteering questions, email Firefly.

Submit Your Act to the Rockstar Librarian Music Guide

Thanks to Rock Star Librarian for putting together the comprehensive guide to music on the playa for nine years running. Want to be in the guide? Here are instructions:

"Email Rock Star Librarian with exactly the following information:

SUBJECT: Your Camp Name
MESSAGE: The name(s) and email(s) for your camp’s music lineup guru(s) and/or camp contact points.

I will then send you instructions to register your camp and add your lineup in the new shiny, new RSL database! If you registered last year, you'll just login!

Submission Deadline: August 10, 2014!"

Philadelphia Round Trip Burning Man Container Tickets

If you are Philadelphian (or thereabouts), you might want to take advantage of this. Big Jawn writes:

"Philly Container placed at Camp Bubbles N Bass @ 8:15 & Esplanade

Only 3 weeks remain to reserve your space! Buy tickets here."

Dept. of Public Works Needs Mechanics

Black Rock City's Department of Public Works (DPW) seeks auto mechanics to perform maintenance and repair of all vehicles, heavy equipment, and generators, as necessary.

Please email your resume and cover letter with the "Mechanic" in the subject line ... the deadline to apply is August 5.

How Do I Support a Burning Man Art Project? Let Us Count the Ways!

So you'd like to help out with an art project, but you're not sure how. Well, you can gift your services, skills, time, resources, or funding, and there are plenty of projects in need of assistance. How do you find them? Here's how:

Support Your Temple! Fund the Temple of Grace

Let's be real about this. The Temple Crew needs your help to build Black Rock City's most sacred structure this year. They can't do it without you. No you, no Temple. Get it? This is a big deal.

Please make a tax-deductible donation to the Temple. They still need to raise $50,000, and Burning Man is in a month.

Donate to the Temple of Grace now.

Thank you for your contribution to our city and our culture.

Bring Back the Bathroom Beacons

If you have ever really really really had to pee at Burning Man before, these people have probably saved your life. Owen writes:

"The Bathroom Beacons is a civic art project that consists of three large-scale bathroom sign installations near the potties on the inner playa. They are are brightly lit and high in the air, making it easier to find the bathrooms at night. We have some great upgrades in the works for 2014, and appreciate the continued support of the community in making this project happen. The bladder you save may be your own!"

Donate to the Bathroom Beacons Kickstarter.

A Postcard for Every Participant

The Black Rock City post offices are actually 47% more reliable than the USPS. Nutmeg Alfredo writes:

"Burners - ready to get some mail? send some mail? Wondering how to go postal on and off playa? Well, this year we're lifting up our skirts really high and collecting all the coinage behind dad's ez-boy so that everyone can be a winner!

Donate to the Playa Postal Indiegogo campaign.

And, if you're not attending, but want to send your buddies mail, anyway (cookies!), you can find out more about how to send mail to and from and on the playa on this Weebly website."

For those of you who are long term attendees of Burning Man, you recall that the Burning Man Fashion Show was THE PLACE to be at the event.
