ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|

Why hello! Buckle your seatbelts for the onslaught (sorry!) of Jackrabbits coming your way in the next several weeks, as we help you prepare for Burning Man 2014. Yep, it's like that.
If you purchased tickets for Burning Man this year, they're in the process of being sent out now, so you should receive yours in the mail soon. Please be patient - it takes a while to stuff all those envelopes! If you haven't purchased tickets yet, we've got another sale (the OMG Sale) coming up in early August.
So the Placement team has finished up their theme camp placement, and we're looking at 819 Theme Camps, 63 Villages, and a total of 1027 total placed camps including department, work support, and art support camps in Black Rock City this year. Whoa.
Pair this up with a record number of art installations coming to Black Rock City, including the honorarium art projects, and you've got a glimpse at a small fraction of the mind-blowing experiences you'll have on playa this summer.
The Man burns in 51 days!

Burning Man 2014 Survival Guide
Presenting the Burning Man 2014 Survival Guide, offering all the information you need to survive -- and thrive -- at Burning Man (not to mention on the way in and out).
The Survival Guide is mandatory reading for all Burning Man participants! Make sure you read it through, and that all your campmates do as well. And keep an eye on your mailbox for the printed version, which is mailed along with all purchased tickets.
(Big props to the Survival Guide team for creating such a beautiful and informative document.)

Professional Media Proposals Due Today
Are you a professional photographer or videographer coming to Burning Man? The deadline for Professional Media Project Proposals is July 10 - that's TODAY, folks! Proposals can be submitted online, and you must submit a project proposal, be approved, AND check-in at Media Mecca on site in order to distribute any imagery from the event beyond sharing with your friends and family. Social media outlets like Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr are considered 'personal use' and do not require a formal proposal.
As a reminder: all participants with cameras, regardless of whether they are for personal or professional use agree to abide by the ticketholders terms and conditions for media. This includes always asking for consent to photograph or film and giving credit for the art that you capture. Don’t be a creepster!
For more information on our Media Policy, please read the Press Rights & Responsibilities page of our website.

2014 Burning Man Resource Listing
Once again, we present the annual Burning Man Resource Listing. We've compiled a list of fellow JRS readers who are offering you their bits, bobs, wares, services and suchlike (and often special discounts for Burners) to help you prepare for the playa. And some of the listings stretch the concept of playa preparation a bit, it's true, but rather than arbitrate that, we decided to interpret broadly and let you decide. Anyway, we've got them filtered into the following categories:
Playa Preparation Events
Lights and Electronics
Miscellaneous BRC Gear
Playa Wear
Services
Now, we hear back every year from people for whom the Resource issue strikes a discordant note in their Burning Man world. We'd like to offer a reminder that Burning Man's principles don't state that our community is opposed to commerce. The thing we avoid is commodification of our culture, which is quite a different thing (although the line between the two can be very fine sometimes). Commerce is a part of daily existence ... including those days spent preparing for Black Rock City.
Over the years, we've witnessed a lot of creativity and drive from small business owners who are Burners, and we've seen a cottage industry grow apace with our event - those are the folks we share with you here, in hopes we can keep it in the family in the face of mass market consumerism.
Of course, you don't need to buy a bunch of stuff to go to Burning Man, and what counts most is your creativity. But from Burner DIY goods on Etsy to discounts on EL wire you can use to create your crazy idea of a thing, we'd be remiss not to share these submitted links with you.
This once-a-year posting can be ignored if you prefer to find your own resources for the playa without any help. We can respect that. It's just a link y'know, and you can choose to click it or not.
And please note that if you want to submit a listing, our submission deadline has passed, and we're NOT accepting late submissions. Thanks for respecting that.
Here's the complete list of Burning Man Resources that were submitted to us by the business owners.

Correction: MURS Radio Models
We mistakenly included non-working links for MURS radios in the Health & Safety edition of the JRS. If you're in need of reliable personal radios on playa, here are MURS radios you might want to consider:
Dakota Alert MURS portable
Motorola MURS portable
... and some context, in case you lost track:
To call Art Support Services on a MURS radio: Set your MURS radio to channel 4 (154.570 MHz, CTCSS/PL 97.4).
To call 911 on a MURS radio: Set your MURS radio to channel 5 (154.600 MHz, CTCSS/PL 97.4) to reach the Black Rock City Emergency Services Dispatch.
FOR ALL MURS USERS: We ask that all Burning Man participants respect that channel 4 & 5 will be used for official use only. While the other MURS channels are fine for personal use we want to stress that channel 5 on MURS please be kept open for emergencies and not used for any other purpose.

The Experience of a 12-Time, 15 Year-Old Burner
Kicking off a wonderful interview on the Burning Blog, Brody writes:
"I’d like to present the perspective of a 15 year old Burner who has attended the event 12 times. Her name is Sydney, and she’s no longer attending the Burn while she’s in high school (apparently, it’s a big deal to miss the first week of high school), but has plans to return as soon as she is able.
I sat down with her recently (blue hair, cool glasses, brace on her knee from a snowboarding accident) to ask about her experiences growing up a Burner."

Burning Man and Philosophy: Love in the Desert
Otter, an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Sacred Heart University, wrote this cool post about the erotic and Platonic meanings of Burning Man:
"You will perhaps see that a thriving city of sixty thousand in an otherwise lifeless environment requires something of a social contract. The 'laws' that make the common good possible aren’t the laws you’ve left behind; breaking them warrants no tangible penalty. But their novelty provides an opportunity to appreciate their beauty."

Join the Black Rock Rangers
|
 |
| |
Being a Ranger is a classic way to give back to Black Rock City. Ranger DiverDave writes:
"Day or night, pairs of Rangers can be found walking and bicycling the streets of Black Rock City, engaging with the community, enjoying the art, always at the ready to help sort things out. Black Rock Rangers are participants who volunteer a portion of their time in service of the safety and well-being of the Burning Man community. Rangers act as non-confrontational community mediators, facilitators of public safety, providers of reliable information, and navigators of the edge of chaos.
If that sounds like fun, please consider volunteering with us! Prospective Black Rock Rangers are at least 18 years old and must have attended Burning Man a minimum of two times and at least once within the past ten years.
The deadline to apply to become a Black Rock Ranger is August 1st. Please visit our website for more information about the Rangers and the application process. Email us with any questions."

Guardians for Embrace
Embrace will be one of this year's grandest playa landmarks, as well as an ongoing project for the Reno Burner community. Morgan writes:
"Volunteer to be an Embrace Guardian on the playa. Just as Temple Guardians help to hold the sacred space of the Temple, Embrace Guardians take care of Embrace and its visitors. Embrace is a delicate work of art. It is not going to burn. We want to save it and install it for a wider audience, and we need your help with that. Learn more and volunteer for a shift as an Embrace Guardian."

Add Your Playa Artifacts to the Archive
Bathsheba writes:
"THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to our 2013 Material Culture collection! We had 79 artifacts gifted, everything from jewelry to a snow (dust) globe to coins, badges, stamps and more.
We are a gifting community. These gifts reveal much about the citizens of BRC not recorded elsewhere. They are windows into participants’ way of life, spiritual values and customs. Your treasures enrich our Material Culture archive that we store and display in our San Francisco office.
Please come by the ARTery at Center Camp in BRC and drop off your gifts. You can also mail your contribution to our San Francisco office:
Burning Man
attn: Material Culture
660 Alabama Street, 4th Floor
San Francisco, CA 94110
Make sure to include this submission form."

Speed Dating for On-Playa Performers and Venues
Are you one of the people who yearn (in vain?) for electric guitars to take over the playa? Well then, this post is for you. Sleepless writes:
"Are you a performer or musician looking for a new stage? Are you a camp who has a hole in your line up, or a newly formed stage with time to fill? Want to find new music that you wouldn't normally gravitate to? Expand your experiences! Come to the new Adventure of Sound Speed Dating Monday through Sunday at 2pm at the Performance Stage in the Center Camp Cafe and ask for Barbie.
If you want to get involved with sound sharing pre-playa or have any questions, please feel free to email Barbie."

Black Rock Farmers Market Needs More Cabbage
There is a farmers market that has provided fresh produce to BRC residents for four years running. Did you know that? Help them make it five. Major Tom writes:
"More Carrot, the Black Rock Farmers Market, is all about maintaining the link between food production and consumption even in the middle of the Black Rock Desert, ensuring nutritious produce is available for free to the citizens of Black Rock City and promoting a culture of gifting, leave no trace, communal effort and healthy eating!
Help us out by backing our campaign on Start Some Good.
We are also looking for performers to entertain patrons (8-10am Tuesday-Friday), and if you're a food camp looking for a great spot to distribute your contributions, you are welcome to join the market! Get in touch with us."

Atlanta to BRC 2014 Community Container Project
This Jackrabbit happens to be from Atlanta, and we'd like for all our friends to take note of this message from DaniB:
"Are you in the southeastern US and need to get your gear out to the Burn? Please consider participating in the Atlanta Community Open Container Project. Cost per unit of six cubic feet is $55, due no later than 07/31/15. If our income exceeds our expenses, anything leftover will be refunded to participants according to percentage of space purchased. This Google Drive folder has all the details. You can also join the Facebook group."

We were listening to ...
Your new associate Jackrabbit is somewhat old-fashioned in his listening habits in that he retains the vestigial attention span required to listen to entire albums of music. While compiling this issue, he fell into somewhat of a hole listening to several playa-ready albums of ambient electronica by the LA artist Deru.
