EVENTS & HAPPENINGS:

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

A small crew of Burning Man staffers had a very successful sojourn to South by Southwest Interactive last week, and boy howdy was it a busy trip! We hosted a panel, workshop, and two Burner meet-ups, allowing us the opportunity to share Burner principles and practices with the masses. We love us some SXSW, expecially examining the parallels between our events. We'll have a recap of what we got up to in a future JRS. (On a side note, we were saddened by the tragic events that transpired later in the week - our hearts go out to those affected.)

In other news, we've got a jobby job available at Burning Man HQ, working with this Rabbit and the rest of the Communications Team. Think you've got the chops? Bring it! See below for details.

On a sad note, we've learned that one of the people on board the missing Malaysian plane was a Burner ... our thoughts go out to his friends and family.

The Man burns in 180 days!

Black Rock Solar in the News

Burning Man's affiliated non-profit Black Rock Solar recently built a solar array at Lake Mead Christian Academy, and it made the "Making Las Vegas a Better Place to Live" news segment on their local ABC news.

Coincidentally, Black Rock Solar is now working on an array for WestCare, mentioned in the second story.

Keep on rockin' it, BRS!

Remembrance Plaque of Names of Burners Lost: 2013-2014

"Each year since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition honors those who have participated in creating Burning Man and affected our Burning experiences. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year's Remembrance Plaque.

Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address.

(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.)

Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year's plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year's plaque.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Man Base, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.)

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa! "

The 2013 Black Rock Yearbook is Here! Are You in it?

We've always loved this project. Doug writes:

"What is the Black Rock Yearbook? Every year since 2007, we have been shooting your Burning Man Yearbook photo. In 2013, over 1000 citizens of Black Rock City stopped by our camp to get a yearbook photo taken while in their playa finest. It's a wonderful time capsule of 2013 playa.

Radical Inclusion: That's So Gay?

As part of the 10 Principles blog series, Jessica "The Hun" Reeder talks about a sensitive subject related to the principle of Radical Inclusion. We welcome you to add your thoughts to the discussion. Here's an excerpt:

"Usually, when I think about Radical Inclusion, I think about the way we judge other Burners for doing it wrong in various ways: Too much oontz oontz or a preponderance of yarn dreads…wearing cargo shorts instead of hot pants…watching the event through the window of an RV…marching around screaming CHIIIRRRRRRRP when other people are trying to sleep. There are a million ways to do Burning Man, and just about any way you choose to do it, somebody’s going to have a problem with it.

But recently, my perception of the Radical Inclusion debate shifted, when I realized that we as a community might have an inclusion problem on a much more basic level."

Tips on Running a Successful Bar at Burning Man

Spanky's Wine Bar is one of the longest-running and well-respected camps running a rockin' bar at Burning Man -- they do it right. Their proprietor, Admiral Painjoy, has put together this fantastic list of tips for running a successful bar at Burning Man. Hell, we learned stuff! If you or yours are gonna run a bar, this is well worth a read.

As they say: "Your heart may belong to The Man ... but your ASS belongs to Spanky's."

11 Alternatives to Burning Man

Let's just categorize this under "Round-Up of Not Burning Man Writings" ... or something. We heart our friends at Fest300, who do great work covering festival culture [Editor's Note: Burning Man is not a festival in the traditional sense ... it's an event.]. They write:

"Ever since Burning Man first sold out in 2011, there has been a scarcity mentality around tickets. Although the governing body of the festival has tried to mitigate scalping and push for a higher attendee limit, the reality is that as the event’s popularity continues to grow, some of us simply won’t get to go to Burning Man. So what's a would-be Burner to do?

Well, there are several alternatives to 'That Thing In The Desert.' Some (Nowhere, AfrikaBurn) are Regional events, officially recognized by Burning Man. Others (Secret Garden Party, What the Festival) were inspired by their founders’ trips to the desert. Considering the Individual Ticket Sale was over in 45 minutes this year, you may want to put some of these 11 festivals on a back ... burner."

(Har! Back burner! See what they did there?)

Music: Deep Playa Wonderings

Love this, and we very much look forward to stumbling across Mr. Blink playing in the deep playa someday. He writes:

"I would like to share my performance art project that was recorded last year at Burning Man 2013, 'Deep Playa Wonderings'. This was my ninth year at Burning Man and I've been performing percussion and trumpet through out the years in various venues. The year before I co-composed music for a Fire troop audition tape. It was a fun process. I ended up loading it to my SoundCloud page and gave out the link as playa gifts in 2012.

After the success of that project I wanted to try a different spin on it. I've always been a fan of wandering in the deep playa and the musical encounters have been highlights of my Burn. I decided I would go out each night to the deep playa and perform improvised music at different art installations. My gift back to the audience would be gifting that actual song to them post-playa through my SoundCloud page.

So the project became 'Deep Playa Wonderings'. I hope to continue gifting of this playa artifact to the Burner community."

Call For Senior Burners To Be Interview Candidates

Bookfairy Katy writes:

"Each year as a journalist I come to Burning Man with a question. The answers become my published story. After careful observation, when dust allows, I want to ask senior Burners WHY there are so many more elder (over 60) men than women at Burning Man? Yes, I know the whole crowd is more male than female according to the Census. Is it that guys started coming at Baker Beach and never stopped? Lotsa old computer geeks that love flaming objects? Elder women don't want to get down and dirty?

As one of those senior women that does come where are the gray haired sisters I'd love to see? I'm camping in the Mobility Camp/Dimension of Accessibility usually at Center Circle and 6:30. Come find me and share opinions."

Eternal Return: Peter Hudson's Latest Interactive Zoetrope!

Hudzo's back, people! And this is a good thing. He writes:

"Did you love Charon (the skeleton ferris wheel) and Homouroboros (the wild monkeys swinging)? YES! Want more, more! Well Peter Hudson and crew are at it again ...

Peter Hudson and his dedicated crew are building Eternal Return, their most dynamic, large-scale, kinetic, stroboscopic zoetrope installation yet. The concept of the Eternal Return speculates that the universe has been recurring, and will continue to recur, in a self-similar form, an infinite number of times across infinite time and space. This concept is touched upon in virtually all cultural and religious narratives.

The complexity of Eternal Return required a two-year build period, and thousands of volunteer crew work hours.

Please help us build this dream for all to enjoy by supporting our Indiegogo fundraising campaign. If you'd like to help us build please message us via our Facebook page."

R-Evolution: Marco Cochrane's Next Mind-Blowing Sculpture

Remember Bliss Dance? Truth Is Beauty? Sure you do. Marco Cochrane and Bliss Crew are working on yet another massive, mind-blowing sculpture -- the last of the series -- and they could use your help ... Julia writes:

"I just wanted to let everyone know that Marco Cochrane and Bliss Crew have started work on the third and final sculpture in The Bliss Project, R-Evolution. She won't be Playa ready until 2015 because these sculptures take two years to build, but we need funding throughout the process! If you loved Bliss Dance and Truth is Beauty and want to help us launch R-Evolution, please donate to our Indiegogo campaign.

As always we have great perks including bronze pendants of all three sculptures, as well as six-inch bronze desktop versions. And, everyone who donates will receive a 'Together We Stand' wristband. Even if you can't donate, please help us spread the word. For more information (and photos of course), please click the link above! Thank you for your continued support and love!!"
