HOW TO AVOID BEING STOPPED AND CITED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT ENTERING BRC
Here are a couple recent blog posts about Law Enforcement activity on playa this year, which has definitely seen an uptick over previous years:
Law Enforcement's Comin' to Town: http://bit.ly/189HKVX
and
Law Enforcement in Black Rock City: http://bit.ly/189HGFw
We don't want to see participants get cited or arrested, nor do you want it to happen to you. So be smart, and stay safe. All Federal, State and Local laws apply to Black Rock City, and Law Enforcement is well within their rights to enforce those laws ... they're doing their job. And we have seen that they are indeed doing so. The way to avoid running afoul of the law is to NOT BREAK THE LAW ... handle yourself well, and be prepared to be pulled over for infractions that draw attention.
Take care to tighten up your ship. Make sure that all your taillights, license plate lights, turn signals and headlights are working. Make sure your license plates are not obscured (by bikes, gear, dirt or anything). Wear your seatbelt and go the speed limit (10MPH on Gate Road and 5MPH in Black Rock City ... not 1MPH more). Do not drink and drive, do not have an open container in your vehicle, and do not ride on top of your vehicle. Carry current valid drivers license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Do not crack a drink until you are parked at your camping spot. Always be polite and respectful to law enforcement officers.
And while Law Enforcement has the right to enforce the law, they do NOT have the right to violate the civil rights afforded you under the Constitution, particularly the 4th Amendment. This video from the ACLU does a good job of explaining what your rights are, and how to protect them at Burning Man ... watch it and have your friends watch it too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11fgr9U1mIk
The Burning Man organization works hard year-round and on playa to establish a solid working relationship with these agencies, and while there are always growing pains in a new year and with a new BLM crew, we're committed to cooperative collaboration to create a workable and sensible environment for everybody to enjoy. To that end, we encourage participants to report all interactions with law enforcement — both positive and negative — by filling out a Law Enforcement Feedback Form at Ranger HQ, so we can use that information in our daily on-playa meetings with law enforcement.

BLACK ROCK CITY WEATHER UPDATE
Looks like the weather's going to be pretty nice for Burn week! Warm during the day, cold at night. The usual. More info? Pick a weather forecast:

WHERE DO I CAMP? IMPORTANT CAMPING INFORMATION
Arriving pre-event? In order to spread the art and love throughout the city this year, if you're not already with a registered theme camp, we ask that you please camp between G street (GDP) and the outer rim. So yes ... no general camping between Esplanade and G street unless you're with pre-registered theme camp in that area, please!
Thank you!

BURNING MAN LIVE WEBCAST

BMIR STREAMING ON "I HEART RADIO"
If you're having trouble listening to BMIR on your trip to Burning Man, Burners with "I Heart Radio" have set up a special channel on their mobile apps for the radio station.
In compliance with the 10 Principles, they've stripped the channel of all advertising and are doing no promotion around it. The only way you can find it is by doing a search for Burning Man within the app. So here we are giving you the inside scoop ... share it with your friends! Oh and it's only available in the United States, so there's that.
You can find the channel on their website:

and download the I Heart Radio app here:

Well, we're in the final stretch, folks. DPW is laying down the last bits of the foundation of Black Rock City, the final piece of the Temple of Whollyness is in place (see John Curley's story: http://bit.ly/13RRH92), and what we hope are the last of the dramatic thunderstorms (http://bit.ly/1asDC9C) are passing through the area, leaving a forecast that promises clear skies and a solid playa surface for the event week. But that could change. At any moment. That's how it goes around these parts. Ya just roll with it.
This will be our last JRS of the 2013 event season, and we thank you for your kind attention to the verbal onslaught we're unleashed on you this year. We hope you've found inspiration and helpful information in the mix ... we've certainly enjoyed bringing it all to you.
From all of us on the Jackrabbit team, we thank you for doing the amazing things you do, and we wish you the best Burn yet. We'll see you on the playa. Very soon.

BLACK ROCK CITY CENSUS GOES ONLINE
The Black Rock City Census team writes:
"The only thing constant is change ...
Over time, the data gathering methods of the Census have progressed from an exclusively paper survey distributed on playa and required manual input of responses to the combination of a paper survey, a random sampling of Burners and online surveys. In 2013, the Census team will be gathering data via a random sampling at the Gate during ingress and exodus and a post-event online survey.
The Census is online ...
The Census will be available online Tuesday after the Burn (September 3) at http://census.burningman.com. We would love to receive your responses and welcome your input. The online Census fosters the immediacy principle of Burning Man and enables BRC citizens to access the Census independently of their preferences in terms of Burning Man experiences. It also allows the Census to be more eco-conscious by reducing the need for printed forms. Further, eliminating the paper form means removing the need for data entry and drastically reducing data errors due to manual entry.
The random sampling during ingress and exodus ...
Because data from the online Census is biased toward people that independently choose to complete the online survey, the random sampling of Burners at the Gate yields data that drastically improves representativeness, validity and trustworthiness of all results produced by the Census. The randomness of the cars selected to participate in a paper form of the Census is predetermined. Professional statisticians advise as to the days, times and selection interval for random sampling.
The end result ...
We want to hear from you! Census aims to provide the most accurate and thorough data possible. By employing the online Census and random sampling during ingress and exodus, relatively unbiased results about BRC population can be presented.
Please visit us at Census Lab located in Center Camp near Media Mecca. You can view all data collected last year and Census Burners hope to answer your questions and provide information about the service we provide. There will also be information about the Census in the Greeter packet. We hope you are inclined to participate in the online Census or at the Gate should your car be randomly selected.
Hope you have a great Burn!"

OOOH OOOH OOOH! I WANT TO DRIVE ON THE PLAYA!
A public service announcement about driving on the playa from the Intercept Crew of the Black Rock Rangers:
If you are not authorized to drive on the playa, DON'T DRIVE during Burning Man. The ONLY people who ARE authorized to drive on the playa are registered mutant vehicles with visible licensure from the Department of Mutant Vehicles, artists placing art on the Playa with permits from the Artery, registered disabled persons displaying licensure and a placard, and limited staff vehicles.
ALWAYS operate your APPROVED vehicle in a safe manner. Remember, Black Rock City is primarily a BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN CITY. Take that in to account when operating a mutant vehicle.
Our established community standard is for vehicles to operate at 5 MPH or less. The unique characteristics of many mutated vehicles require drivers to exercise particular care when faced with limited peripheral vision and/or loading and unloading passengers. Please take this into consideration.
All of the laws and restrictions that apply to driving in the default world also apply on the playa. Additionally, playa conditions require that all vehicles STOP during white-out conditions, that you not drive on wet roads, and that you operate at speeds of even less than 5MPH if your vehicle is creating a dust plume in its wake.
Remember, in Black Rock City, driving is a privilege. More information about driving protocols can be found here:
http://bit.ly/o80vyO
**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**
WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH OPEN CONTAINER ON MUTANT VEHICLES?
Keith, a 7-year art car owner/operator, wrote us a helpful email about operating a mutant vehicle on playa, based on his direct experience (and not all in a good way):
"WHAT IS OPEN CONTAINER ON AN ART CAR?
If the art car has NO separated cabin from the rest of the vehicle (e.g. a floating bed) then technically there can be no visible open container on the vehicle. This gets very tricky with certain vehicles especially if the driver's SEPARATION is somewhat subjective and if the driver relies on someone else to allow people aboard. Also throw in the factor of a guest pulling out their drink (or other substance) of choice out of view of driver and/or first mate, and then you have a ticket waiting to happen.
And guess what? The driver can get written up separate, cumulative fines for every different substance that is found on the vehicle. Each person possessing the substances also gets written up for what is individually found.
And while if you cooperate, you just usually get a ticket, getting caught can end your Burn, especially if the substance found is drug based, because of special Federal laws procedures pertaining to certain forms of possession. If they cannot identify the substance and don't trust your description, or you cannot or will not provide ID, you are in for a ride to Reno.
WHAT IS LEGITIMATE PROBABLE CAUSE?
That is any obvious alcoholic beverage with a label, or any obvious drug use, but also the SMELL of any obvious drug use. That will get you boarded and searched. But it could and has also been stretched to when someone is drinking out of a plastic/glass type receptacle that is typical of a bar environment (martini glass) and is displaying inebriation.
Depending on the agency, they usually search the rest of the vehicle (or call in the agency that can). Many past citations from past years are related to these issues. Obviously it doesn't always go down the same way but there are certain procedures law enforcement uses."

BLACK ROCK CITY NAVIGATION APP FOR IPHONE
We have not vetted this -- like at all -- so your mileage may vary (so to speak). And for that matter, we prefer getting lost. But hey, it's up to you. Ali writes:
"We've made a free navigation app for iPhone (no ads, no nothing) and it can help you find your way around the Playa. It doesn't use cell service or roads. It uses the built-in compass to point you to where you're going and tell you how far you are. You can mark your home or any other place you wanna find later. If you somehow get cell service or wi-fi, you can even send them to other burners. A lot people downloaded it last year and gave us great feedback so we've improved it a lot. Here's where you can get it: http://bit.ly/12hYcjp , or just search for 'Falcon' on the app store."

CARGO CULTS, TRUE BELIEVERS AND POLYAMORY
Leeanna writes:
"Presentation by Sexual Anthropologist, Dr. Leanna Wolfe at 3:30 PM on Saturday August 31 at Poly Paradise
Papua New Guinea became the homeland for numerous Cargo Cults when once isolated native Melanesians witnessed military cargo drops during WWII. The locals noted how the military personnel would be seated at desks, scribble notes on scraps of paper and voila cargo would drop from the sky. The magical concept was infectious in that the Melanesian Big Men (chiefs) gained prestige by trafficking in the procurement and dispersal of goods. Oblivious to First World manufacturing and trade practices they assumed that these very light-skinned people who dressed in military fatigues were practicing magic. To procure cargo for themselves, the locals attempted to dress like these foreign magicians and replicated airplanes, rifles and radios out of thatch and coconuts. Sadly for them no cargo dropped from the skies.
People who are drawn to the practice of Polyamory can be seen as sharing a parallel belief system to the members of Cargo Cults. For both groups, belief is central to their practice. Poly people believe many things about how intimacy ought to be negotiated that are diametrically opposed to what mainstream people believe. They encourage transparency, disclosure and joyful acceptance of new lovers into their home relationships and families. Like the members of Melanesian Cargo Cults, they celebrate the supposed positive outcomes of sharing ones beloved with others.
One of the cornerstone beliefs of practitioners of polyamory is compersion, the notion that embracing one's partner's other love-interests is a good thing. Mainstream people would consider such a practice unthinkable and the outcome foolhardy if not downright dangerous. Meanwhile polyamorous people embrace the intricate processing that these otherwise jealous-provoking behaviors can engender. Cheating, the more standard mainstream practice carries a diametrically distinct belief system from polyamory but a very similar goal: love in abundance falling from the sky! Akin to cargo cult magic, they both hope to maintain the safety, love and security of their home relationships while kindling exciting dopamine sparks with outside lovers."

Those who will be busy or sleeping during the specified time, please devote some attention when you can in the hours before and after. All are welcome, and every piece of the human spirit is helpful towards the cause."

MAKE A WISH!
Puppet writes:
"Come make a wish at The Wishing Tree! Located at 7:15 & Esplanade, across the street from Prometheatrics, The Wishing Tree was created as an arboreal space to meditate, imagine, exhale... This is a place for participants to leave wishes, set intentions, release fears, and let go of expectations. All are welcome. Your wishes will be burned with the Temple on Sunday."

BE A READER FOR STORYTIME!
Puppet (again) writes:
"Looking for a way to participate? I need books and Readers for my Storytime events on Playa. You can contribute a short story or thematically appropriate children's book and/or become a Reader (in costume or as your avatar or whatever you like). My Storytimes are primarily meant for adults, but all are welcome. I will have a Storytime Tuesday 8/27 and Thursday 8/29 noon – 3 pm in the Dome at camp Prometheatrics at 7:15 & Esplanade. Email Puppet at phoenix.isacks@gmail.com to participate. You're also welcome to attend the event as an audience member, since we need those too. ;-)"

Your support of this project is a vote for energy independence and a sustainable future. We have the technology and we delight in debuting our unique wind turbine on the playa as a gift for all she has given us. Our turbine will be actively displayed across the Esplanade from Fractal Planet (2:00 & Esplanade) so stop on by, charge some electronics and experience it in action.

TRAVELING TO BLACK ROCK CITY: REMEMBER, YOU'RE A BURNER
As you're traveling to and from Black Rock City, please remember that as a Burner (whether you like it or not), you represent ALL Burners. Be courteous and considerate in our neighboring towns, on airplanes, buses, whatever. Don't speed anywhere (you WILL get stopped), and be careful of small children and animals while you head through small towns along the way. And of course, Leave No Trace wherever you go.
You represent Burning Man out there ... do us proud.

Art is everywhere at Burning Man ... in every theme camp, every street, every nook and cranny of the expansive open playa -- from Center Camp to the Man to the deepest point of the City's perimeter -- you'll find art. In fact, everyBODY at Burning Man IS art, including YOU (see Halcyon's sage advice on this point: http://bit.ly/1cUXPqh).
That's part of what makes our city so special: everywhere you go, you're neck-deep in of one of the most fantastic (and fantastical) art experiences ever conceived. And the best part? A lot of it involves FIRE. In fact, there's going to be over 100 open fire pieces this year (counting burbling fires, blasting poofers and gigantic conflagrations) ... and that's a LOT, people.
Also, there will be 24 CORE projects surrounding the Man, each created by representatives from different Burning Man Regional Groups (more info: http://www.burningman.com/installations/art_core.html, that will ALL BURN SIMULTANEOUSLY AT 9PM ON THURSDAY NIGHT. Hoo boy!
At final count, there are 372 pre-registered art pieces, the largest number ever ... and there will undoubtedly be more to come during the event. There are some amazing pieces coming to the playa this year, and if you want to bring your own artwork, it's not too late ... read on to learn more about how to go about it. EVERYBODY'S art is welcome at Burning Man, including YOURS.
The Man burns in 12 days! (Holy moly!) We can't wait to see you all on playa!

ART TOURS
The ARTery offers a variety of art tours. Pick one that's right for you:
Guided Art Tours
For those in need (e.g. you can't get around to the artwork yourself on foot or by bike), there are art tours that depart on a bus daily from "Everywhere Pavilion", right next to First Camp on the Esplanade. These limited seats are first come, first served, and first preference given to those in need. Tours are Tuesday - Friday at 11 a.m. Tickets are handed out the day before (Monday for Tuesday's tour, Tuesday for Wednesday's tour, etc.) at noon at Everywhere Pavilion. Check in at the ARTery for additional details and tour availability.
Self-Guided Paper Tours
The ARTery also provides written tours you can pick up at the ARTery and create your own tour! Lead a tour with your friends ... take 'em around in a pack of bikes, or do a tour with your Mutant Vehicle.
Bike Tours
Tuesday-Friday, twice a day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., weather permitting. Meet in front of the ARTery and ride your bikes as volunteers from the ARTery provide information on curated art pieces, as well as the Temple and The Man.
Audio Art Tours
The ARTery's Jim Tierney (aka Anarchist Cowboy) has once again produced an awesome audio art tour together with Evonne Heyning, featuring great behind-the-scenes information about many of the Honorarium art installations. You can find the MP3s, which you can download to your computer, smartphone or iPod to bring with you. Here's Mosbaugh's write-up about the tours on the Burning Blog:

DON'T LOCK YOUR BIKE TO THE ART
This may sound stupid, but (well) every year people lock their bikes to art installations ... as if they were giant bike racks. Which they're not. Sometimes this results in a) the lock being cut before the piece is burned, or b) the bike being burned with the piece. Neither is cool. Avoid this situation by ... guess what? ... not locking your bike to the artwork. Done and done.
**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**
RESPECT FOR THE ART: IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING, BUT....
We hope you'll help us with this one. We have few out-and-out RULES in BRC, but there's one very serious thing that really must be called a rule: Unless you made it, don't vandalize artwork.
Yeah, we know "it's Burning Man, man ... don't harsh my mellow ... it's my creative expression, man!" Yeah, no. Messing with somebody else's art isn't cool ... unless of course they expressly imply that their piece is meant to be messed with, written on, etc.
Having created art, this Rabbit is here to tell ya: it blows when somebody else vandalizes your work. So please, help keep an eye on the artwork and treat it with respect, and if you see someone tagging, vandalizing, manhandling or climbing something fragile or unsound, or heaven forbid, stealing a piece of art, do your part and talk to them, or contact a Ranger if you're not equipped to deal with it yourself. There's plenty of room on the playa for eveyrone's art and expression without us having to do it all over each others' work.

In this JRS, we bring you playa tips from a number of perspectives. Packing. Emotions. Travel. Bikes. Surviving dust storms. What to do if it rains. Where to find an orgy. Things like that. We've sprinkled 'em throughout this edition, but you'll find 'em.
One of the better sources of playa tips is going to be the offerings in the Burning Blog, and we've got it all packed up nice and tidy for you here:

And finally, we can't believe we're saying this, but ... (deep breath) ...
The Man burns in 15 days! To say we're excited would be a gross understatement.

THE WEATHER
First off, weather happens on playa. It's quite unpredictable, in fact. It's hot. It's cold. Last week it rained ... like crazy. And when it rains on playa, it gets super muddy and slippery. However, once the rains stop, it dries out rather quickly (which it did, thankfully).
It's unlikely it'll rain during the event, but you never do know. Really, you don't. So come prepared for anything. (And the best thing to do if it rains is to STAY PUT, don't drive your vehicle, don't ride your bike, listen to BMIR for updates and wait it out.)
If you'd like to know what's happening on playa RIGHT NOW, check out our Black Rock City weather station ... data uploads every 5 minutes. Enjoy!

ROAD WORK ON ROUTE 447
Route 447 is the main drag from I-80 to the playa. Most Burners get to Black Rock City via 447. And it has taken a beating this year from a series of flash floods.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is doing road work to repair damage to the shoulders (or "verge" if you're British) on a 20 mile (or "20 mile" if you're British) section of Route 447 about 20 miles north of Nixon near Snoopy Rock (the rock that looks like a beagle).
This work may mean the road is reduced down to a single lane.
Please drive slowly and carefully -- the shoulders (verges) are very soft / non existent after being washed away -- and allow extra time for your journey.
Work will stop Wednesday before the event and resume post-event, but the roads will still be narrow and dangerous. Be careful - it's an (asphalt) jungle out there ....

WHAT ABOUT THOSE DRONES (UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES) ON PLAYA?
We held a summit of drone (unmanned aerial vehicle) operators who love to bring their zippy copters to the playa and get some great photographs and video footage, and looked to them to come up with workable guidelines for their safe use on playa. This is in our usual spirit of looking to participants to come up with their own best practices and follow them so we don't have to create rules.
The resulting guidelines are excellent, and take into consideration participants' concerns about flying over the Temple burn, personal privacy and general safety. We've compiled it all into this webpage for your reference:

Thank you UAV enthusiasts!

IF YOU'RE GOING TO SHOOT PHOTOS AND VIDEO ON PLAYA, KNOW THIS ...
Burning Man was built on freedom of expression, and participants shouldn't have to worry that photos or videos of their on-playa activities might appear online (or elsewhere) without their permission.
Burning Man's photo policy is spelled out in the online terms and conditions applicable to all tickets: any participant is free to disseminate photos for personal use only, and cannot use them for any other purpose without the written permission of Burning Man. The Personal Use Agreement simply provides another mechanism to make participants aware of the limitations on photo use, and the distribution of the PUA at Playa Info also assists in this process.

BMIR IS ON THE AIR NOW
Bobzilla wants you to put it in your earholes:
"BMIR - Burning Man Information Radio is the voice of the Man and is on the air right now. You can listen on your computer by pointing your browser to http://www.bmir.org and clicking the 'Listen Now' link or by using their embedded flash player.
BMIR broadcasts a wide variety of music, artist and participant interviews, news, weather, burn information and much more. In the case of severe weather, BMIR is where you tune for official information and instructions so bring a radio to the playa (one with a line out jack is best so you can hook it up to your camps big speakers or just use the headphone jack).
Tune in while you're at home doing that last minute packing and planning to find out how the city is coming together, what the weather is like and for any important late breaking information. BMIR will start broadcasting live from the playa 24/7 sometime on Wednesday Aug. 21st. You can even listen on your smartphone (if you have cell coverage) as you travel to the playa. Here's how - http://tinyurl.com/mbqek65
When you hit Gerlach start trying to tune BMIR in over the air at 94.5 FM. Come by an visit them at 1:15 and Rod's Road, just off Center Camp between Ranger HQ and The Earth Guardians. Tune in!"

VOLUNTEER FOR THE BURN GARDEN WOOD DONATION TEAM!
DA writes:
"We need YOU to join the BURN GARDEN WOOD DONATION TEAM!
Located at 3, 6, and 9, near Promenade and Esplanade, the Burn Gardens are a cluster of Burn Platforms used for burning wood during the Burning Man Event. As the event draws to a close, the burning of wood at the Burn Gardens increases dramatically due to participants eager to burn their excess wood. The main challenge is dealing with participants who try to overstack the burn platforms, as well as burn inappropriate materials such as trash, compost, and recycling.
Starting Sunday morning 9/1/13 at 9am The Burn Garden Wood Donation Team will make sure that participants do not overstack the burn platforms or burn inappropriate materials. Burning Man is proud to be the largest practicing Leave No Trace Event in the world and participants need to take their trash, recycling, and compost with them.
Additionally, the team will facilitate the collection of Wood Donations where participants can donate good quality, useable lumber. The donors will be doing most of the heavy lifting, you just need to direct them.

GAMELATRON: A SONIC MEMORIAL, TEMPLE OF WHOLLYNESS INVITATION, DEDICATION, SUNSET CEREMONIES
Geoff tells us:
"Dear All Souls destined for BRC,
For 160 hours, from August 25th at sunset till noon on September 1, A Sonic Memorial—Roh Ageng or 'Great Spirit' -- will sound from the central pyramid of the Temple. www.gamelatron.com/bass
Created by The Gamelatron Team, who brought to 2011's Temple of Transition an ensemble of 57 Balinese gongs, Roh Ageng features some of the sexiest, most powerful gongs ever forged by human hands outfitted with robotically-activated mallets. It includes massive royal Javanese hanging bass gongs (up to 105 cm wide, 100 lbs and 40 hertz deep). These ritual instruments traditionally serve to carry intentions between realms, to ward off obstructing forces, and to induce healing trance and meditation.
Sunset Ceremony: Calling of Names
At Sunset on August 25, when the gongs first sound, we will do a formal dedication ceremony with the Temple crew and Guardians. We invite you to send us (geoff@gamelatron.com) the names of anyone you wish to have 'called in' and honored at that time. We will continue this ceremony each evening at sunset.
Sponsoring a Gong as a Memorial Dedication
We invite you to personalize Roh Ageng through sponsoring, personally or as a group, a ritual gong or to commission an original Temple song as a tribute or memorial for a loved one, for a special ceremony or something important to you.
All information on the project, dedications and sponsoring a memorial, is at www.gamelatron.com/bass.
Wholly yours,
The Gamelatron Team"

FACE PAINTERS WANTED TO CREATE VERY SMALL ALIENS
Yaayyy! OK so there's this thing called the Youth Education Spaceship project (Y.E.S.), and it's REALLY COOL. See? http://youtheducationalspacecraftproject.wordpress.com/
On Saturday (Burn day) they're going to facepaint and dress up little kids as aliens at Kidsville (5:30 & D/E) to play in the spaceship in front of BMIR on the Esplanade. If you'd like to help, they could use some facepainters to paint the kiddos faces like creeeeeepy aliens ... email rosalie@burningman.com if you're interested. And here's the invite for the kids:
"Hey Kids -
What if you were an alien scientist that decide to fly to earth to examine what it was like? What would you look like as an alien? What would you wear? How would you capture your observations about 'life on earth' and who would you share them with? What do you think you would learn?
Join us on Saturday at 10:00 in Kidsville. We will put on our alien garb and we will go to our very own spaceship to do our research. The Youth Educational Spacecraft (Y.E.S.) will open for you if you are a kid or teen!
Older than 12 - Can you help create projects to aid our younger aliens in doing their research?
Younger than 12 - Bring your best alien garb and we will get you set up to examine life on earth!"

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION IN HUMAN HEARTBEAT OF THE PLAYA
Megs (who may or may not be a hippy) says:
"When a human heart is surrounded by rhythmic low frequencies of the right meter, it aligns with the beat. Imagine millions of watts of sonic power playing a simple, steady, bass-laden heartbeat across the playa. Imagine 60,000 hearts beating as one. Imagine your heart is one of them.
Thursday night at 10pm, Black Rock Information Radio will broadcast our bass-laden heartbeat on 94.5FM. Our goal is to get every speaker on the playa to tune into the heartbeat, and to get every heart on the playa beating in sync. This project is not a single central event, but an experiment in engaging everyone, connecting the whole playa for five minutes.
You can participate by gathering at the CORE burn, going to a participating sound camp, or tuning your own camp sound system or car radio into 94.5FM at 10pm on Thursday.

BLACK ROCK CITY STAKE MORMON MIXER
This is great (Note: we didn't know what a Stake was, and now we do: http://mormon.org/faq/ward-stake-branch). Jonathan writes:
"10 reasons Burners and Mormons are a match made in heaven. 1) They both love temples, 2) settle in deserts, 3) build cities, and 4) are all about self sufficiency. 5) They love crazy ceremonies, 6) crazier visions, and 7) ornate pageants. 8) They both focus on the community, 9) spend liberally to support their cause, and 10) everyone agrees they're sooo nice.
So let's bring them together and see what happens. Mormons, former Mormons, and anyone intrigued by Mormonism are all welcome to come chat about Joseph Smith, Native American-Hebrew ancestry, your favorite Broadway musical from the creators of South Park, or any other Mormon related topics. We'll be stocked with sparkling cider for the true believers, and champagne and beer for the rest.

PACK ALL THE THINGS! NOW, UNPACK HALF OF THEM.
The world's most elegant woman, Coco Chanel, is said to have advised... "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off."
Yes, Radical Self-Reliance is the order of the day, and yes, you do need clothes for all weather and many occasions. You do need a few headlamps (protip: a red one doesn't blind all your friends when you look them in the eye), and extra stove fuel is always a good idea.
But really. Are you going to do three complete costume changes at the Leia/Luke party? Will you even make that party? Is that single event really worth packing a whole tub full of costumes into your hatchback? Probably not.
Avoid thinking that packing everything will make your Burning Man PERFECT. YOU are enough. Your participation, your welcome-ness, and your awesome week don't hinge on what you bring to the event. Your sleep-deprived, end-of-event self will thank you for not packing more than you did.

Burning Man staffers are literally running through the halls of BMHQ. It's getting kinda nutty up in here, frankly. And it's no less active and electric up in Black Rock City, which is taking form as we type. Check out Curley's ongoing coverage from ground zero in the middle of nowhere:
http://blog.burningman.com/category/building-brc/

We've compiled it all into this webpage for your reference:
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/drones.html

"Did you know that Burning Man has a material culture archive? Well, we do.
The artifacts and gifts we create and give one another at Burning Man reveal a great deal about our community. They provide a unique perspective on our participants' way of life, spiritual values and customs. We believe that it's important to enshrine these playa artifacts in our permanent material culture archive, as part of Burning Man's history.
On playa, we encourage you to come by the ARTery in Center Camp to drop off samples of your artifacts and gifts for our archive. We have a big red box with forms for you to fill out as well as sealed bags to store your contribution.

Kids on playa?! Yep, absolutely. In fact, Burning Man has been a family affair from the very beginning. When Jerry James and Larry Harvey burned the first Man in 1986, their 5-year old sons Robin and Trey built a Burning Dog alongside their dads.
Burning Man enthusiastically welcomes children of all ages to Black Rock City, and kids 12 and younger don't require a ticket. BRC's infrastructure supports the presence of families, and has an excellent record regarding the welfare of children.
Are you planning on bringing your kids along to this year's burn? There are some great resources and programs for Burner families that we want you to know about, including The Survival Guide for Families, Kidsville, Black Rock Scouts and the FUN Child ID Program run by the Black Rock Rangers.
We'll start things off with some great Burning Blog posts from Judes, a Burner since 1999 and an advocate for playa families. She first brought her son Dexter to BRC when he was 16-months-old, and he now has 9 Burns under his belt! Take a look: http://bit.ly/Pf05fK !
The Man burns in 16 days!

PLAYA SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR FAMILIES
Surviving at Black Rock City is difficult enough, and now you want to bring your kids? That's great! It can certainly be daunting the first time, but children actually thrive in the playa environment. It just takes some extra preparation, planning and diligence.
We have compiled an excellent Survival Guide for Families. Learn more and check it out:

F.U.N. CHILD IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM
The Family Unification Network (FUN) program allows families to register themselves and their children at the Black Rock Ranger HQ in Center Camp (daily from 9am-noon or anytime after 2pm).
The registered child will receive a wristband with a serial number that is unique to them, which will identify the child, parents and camp location. That's it! Should your child become separated from you, all he or she has to do is find a Ranger. The wristband serial number will facilitate a speedy reunion.
And bringing your kids to register is a great way for them to become familiar with Rangers and the Ranger Station.

JOIN THE BLACK ROCK SCOUTS!
Jay of the Black Rock Scouts writes:
"This program is for burner kids, based on the Ten Principles of Burning Man. Kids are the next generation, so we aim to teach them how to sustain life in BRC. Camps and services will host playa-cational field trips, events and volunteer opportunities. Scouts will earn patches, tokens or pins for things learned, survival skills achieved, good deeds and volunteering.
Black Rock Scouts is not a baby sitting service. A parent or an adult guardian must attend all events with their kid. Parents must be prepared for extreme changes in perspective. Perspective changes can be as drastic as deciding that Burning Man can morph from 'attending Burning Man with their kid due to child care issues' to deciding that 'a burn is not a burn without their kid'.
Scouts should visit the BRS Headquarters in Kidsville to see the Schedule of Events and pre-register. Each scout will earn one BRS Patch, Bandanna and Sash while supplies last. Most events are hosted or at least meet at the BRS headquarters.
You can download the BRS schedule of events from their Facebook group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/blackrockscouts/files/ "

WELCOME TO KIDSVILLE!
Kidsville is a cooperative village for Burners with kids, which has grown to more than 150 families in recent years. Kidsvillians believe that Burning Man is a unique experience to share as a family.
Kidsville is safe, quiet, centrally located and close to Potties, Center Camp, Medical and the 6:00 Rangers Station. The Village takes up the blocks between 5:00 and 5:30, Desiderata and Extraterrestrial. The entire village is enclosed with playa fencing and flagpoles, to identify boundaries for kids. Vehicles are not allowed within the borders so it's a safe place for kids to ride bikes, run and play. For added safety, all kids are tagged with K'ville wristbands to make them easily identifiable.
Link to the Black Rock City map:
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/maps/13_maps/index.html
A tight-knit community develops overnight; children have plenty of friends to play with and parents bond and share with neighbors. In the K'ville Center Camp is the Mayor's camp, a fire pit, an Information Kiosk with an event schedule, the Black Rock Scouts HQ, resident Ranger Mickey's Camp and play equipment like trampolines. During the week, families host dozens of events like Mini Burning Man. We love it when art cars visit and take little peeps and their families for a spin! To schedule a visit, contact Kidsville Mayor Dawn Lapierre, a.k.a. Queen of F'ing Everything via her Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/dawn.lapierre
While K'ville welcomes all Playa-families to visit, it is NOT A BABYSITTING SERVICE. Children may NOT be dropped off in Kidsville without a parent. Parents are responsible for their children's safety and behavior at all times, inside and outside of Kidsville.
To camp in Kidsville, each camp must have at least one child under the age 18. All camps must work at least one Kidsville Greeter shift. There are still a few spaces left in Kidsville, but you must pre-register and choose a campsite. Once spaces become full, there is a waiting list. NOTE: If you are NOT pre-registered with a camp location, don't expect to arrive at Kidsville and find a space.
