ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

It must be prep season! This issue is paaaaacked full of ways you can get involved. First of all, it's nearly time to start submitting your playa events, it's definitely time to start applying for Low Income Tickets, and maybe even booking your Burner Express Air flights. (Yes, flights!) Meanwhile, the big art projects need help getting their acts together, and there are a couple worthy ones in here.
But there are also exciting new opportunities this time around. You can join the Man Watch team and be a guardian of our city's central figure, or join the Burn Perimeter Support Group and keep the fires burning safely. And if that's not deep enough of a role for ya, there are no fewer than four job postings in here.
Inspired yet? It's almost time to be almost time for the Burn!
The Man burns in 72 days.

Playa Events Calendar Opens 6/30 — Get Your Event in the WhatWhereWhen
Nimbus writes:
“The 2016 Playa Events Calendar opens Thursday, June 30 at 12 pm Pacific. To get your event published in the printed WhatWhereWhen book, it needs to be among the first 1500 events submitted.
Event descriptions are limited to 150 characters, so take the time to write up a snappy and informative blurb. No need to waste your precious characters on your camp name, location, or event time — those all show up as separate lines in addition to your event description.
Hosting the same event on multiple days? Please be sure to mark it as a ‘repeating event’ as opposed to creating duplicate one-time event entries—this allows us to use the limited space more efficiently and include more camps’ listings!”

Kids' Tickets for Kids 12 and Under
Nimbus writes:
“Returning for 2016, each child 12 years old and younger needs their own special no-cost Kid’s Ticket. Each of these tickets is unique and cannot be duplicated, so if you’re bringing more than one kid you’ll need to order multiple tickets. Be sure to print each out and bring them with you. Kids must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian to enter. Kid’s Tickets are only valid for use in conjunction with a valid adult Burning Man ticket or credential.”

You Can Still Be One of 4,000 People to Get a Burning Man Low Income Ticket
Dr. Daneosaur writes:
“Our goal is to award 4,000 Low Income Tickets. We strive to award applicants who we’re sure will make it to the playa and participate fully in the event (No spectators!). This is why it’s important to fill out the narrative part of the application as fully and thoughtfully as you can.
In order to award these 4,000 tickets to deserving folks, we need to review more than twice that number of applications.
We still need to receive and review nearly 2,000 more applications to reach our goal. You heard me: not 20, not 200, not even 1,000. We need 2,000 more applications from our community of dreamers and doers with limited funds to apply for this program.”

Jewish Burners Light the Funky Fires for Burning Mensch
Allie “Lotus” Wollner writes:
“Employing the Burning Man ethos of gifting (the event was free), Radical Inclusion (those in attendance were a mix of Orthodox Jewish families, [Jewish Community Center] holiday regulars, Jewish young adults, and smattering of South Bay Burners who heard about Burning Mensch through the South Bay Burner list), and Communal Effort (via collaborations with two Burning Man Theme Camps; we’ll get to that in a minute), Joel saw an opportunity to infuse some primal vitality into Judaism.”

We Are Midburn
Midburn 2016 just wrapped up, and this Regional Event in Israel just keeps getting more beautiful year after year. Dan Lior writes:
“Since returning from Midburn, I did not speak to anyone about my experience. I could not find the words that would explain the beauty and power of what happened there. I felt like any story or photo would not do the reality of the playa — and the people who filled it — any justice.
I hope this video, which you are all part of, will shed some light about the love and beauty of the city that was raised from dust in the middle of nowhere.”

The Man Needs You! New Volunteer Opportunities with Man Watch Crew
EZ Button writes:
“Man Watch is a group of volunteers from other crews at Burning Man who dedicate some time to protect the Man and enhance the experience of all who come to see it. Man Watch volunteers are stationed at the Man Pavilion around the clock starting on Sunday until early Saturday before the burn. They are promoters, guardians, and information givers who enjoy talking to attendees about each year’s Man Pavilion and Burning Man in general. Man Watch volunteers also act as docents, facilitating interactive experiences associated with the Man.
Starting this year, Man Watch will be an independent crew open to participants looking to help on the playa. We are looking for volunteers who would like to help build and sustain the new Man Watch crew. If you’re interested, please contact EZ Button at manwatch@burningman.org.”

Catacomb of Veils – Help Move Mountains
|
 |
| |
Pick of the Litter writes:
“Catacomb of Veils will be the largest art piece at Burning Man 2016, and one of the largest burns in the history of the event.
At 220 feet across and covering 17,000 square feet of playa, the Catacomb of Veils rises like a rocky outcropping of the desert floor evoking Black Rock Point itself. A path winds up on the Eastern Pyramid of the Catacomb, and from this vantage point participants can begin their descent inward. Hints of ancient relics adorn the walls, as shafts of light illuminate effigies and offerings. The journey culminates in an inner sanctum — a Sanctum of Veils — a confluence of concealment, revelation and realms beyond our own.
We are an all-volunteer group building at Pier 70 in San Francisco currently crowdfunding our project, and the money raised by our campaign goes directly to the materials, construction and transport of the Catacomb onto the playa. We couldn’t be more thankful for your help, support and generosity.”

Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs — case/lang/veirs (2016)

Getting one record by all three of these songwriters is like getting a food that serves as ice cream, filet mignon and fresh organic greens at the same time.
