Support Reno Kids with Kiwanis Bikes for the Playa
It may seem a bit early in the season for this one, but our friends at the Kiwanis Bike Program like to get started early so they can plan their programs supporting the kids of Reno. LNBikeGal writes:
"Our friends at the Kiwanis Bike Program sell affordable used bicycles and accessories (lights, EL-wire kits, baskets, car racks, locks, fat seats, bells and more) to Burners. And if you return your bike to Kiwanis, they’ll refurbish and reuse it for their kids programs or save it for Burners next year! You can also store your bike with them until next year's Burn.
All funds support bike repairs, bike donation, and bicycling education for at-risk kids in the Reno area. Purchase and reserve a bike now while supplies last. Email questions to kiwanis_bikes@sbcglobal.net."

The Meaning of Sunrise
Mia Quagliarello rounded up Burners' touching stories of what BRC sunrises mean to them:
"A sunrise on the playa is not something you’ll ever forget. In my mind, it’s like a single fluttering butterfly after an all-night pterodactyl rave. The sky is awash in pastels, the air is fresh and calm, and the creeping warmth of the sun heralds a new day. It feels good to be alive."

@burningman on Instagram
Photo by @thepixelpilgrim | As the temple burned, this photographer was so struck by the stillness and intensity around him that he wrote a poem about it:
CONSUMED
And those of us born to the fires,
Have no taste for merrier ends
So we march ourselves to pyres
A thousand faceless burning men.

AfrikaBurn launches Radio Free Tankwa
Papa Deadly writes:
"They have a burn in Africa. True story; it's called AfrikaBurn. Also true: they recently launched their own radio station (with a little help and advice from our very own BMIR). It's called Radio Free Tankwa, after the desert AfrikaBurn's held in, and they cracked the mysteries of both FM, and streaming, on their first run. Formidable!"

The Last Apothecary
Shing Khor writes:
"The Last Apothecary is an immersive, interactive, narrative science fiction 'haunted house' installation, headed to deep playa. We've just launched our Kickstarter, which allows you to own a strange hand fabricated artifact from our universe and join in our ridiculous worldbuilding (think outer colony space industrial, with an obsession with Old Earth).
Check it out on Kickstarter
We're also soliciting all sorts of medical ephemera, from past, present and future. Interesting things we've added to our collection recently include dentures, x-rays, dental casts, and a variety of terrifying things that poke at soft people parts. Email blackrockapothecary@gmail.com for a mailing address."

Spark 2016: Liberosis — Austria — June 15–19
 |
|
| |
Where: Seedcamp, Kautzen, Austria
When: June 15 – 19
Gogo writes:
"The 2nd 'Spark' will happen in Kautzen at Seedcamp, a valley with a mill, a spring, meadows and woods situated between Vienna, Prague and Munich. The event will feature a burn, art, workshops and other piratesque happenings (we have a pirate ship to dance and swing on as well). Art grants are available, and emphasis is on creating a community vibe. Camping and beds available.
The art theme for 2016 is Liberosis: 'n. the desire to care less about things—to loosen your grip on your life, to stop glancing behind you every few steps, afraid that someone will snatch it from you before you reach the end zone—rather to hold your life loosely and playfully, like a volleyball, keeping it in the air, with only quick fleeting interventions, bouncing freely in the hands of trusted friends, always in play.'
To get your ticket, sign up as volunteer, announce your workshop or performances or apply for an art grant, visit the website."

The Burn Starts Here: Physical & Material Preparedness — Oakland, CA — June 17
Where: American Steel Studios, Oakland, CA
When: Friday, June 17 6:00 – 7:00 pm
Scott McNeil writes:
"Taught by two veteran East Bay Burners, this seminar will teach you about the physical and mental preparations that will make your Burn more safe and more comfortable; how much water to bring, what kind of lighting to buy, how to prepare for a dust storm, getting familiar with rebar, and how to prep for the mental and emotional workout you're bound to have. This is more of a discussion than a lecture, so bring your questions, concerns and aspirations.
The seminar is free and takes place one hour before the monthly Social, giving you an opportunity to first learn and then fraternize with both new and ripened Burners in a fun, relaxed environment."
