Hello Fine People of Black Rock City!

Mapping weekend #2 wrapped up for the Placement Team and things are looking fantastic for our fair city.  Let's all raise a glass to our amazing team of volunteers!
We will be announcing Placement in Early July.  If you need to make any big adjustments to your camp or if circumstances are changing and you are no longer able to come to Burning Man and must cancel your questionnaire, PLEASE let us know right now.  Edits are much easier to make now while everything is in pencil.

If you want to see your name in lights - the Theme Camp listing is online now:
http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/themecamps.html?yy=2014

Remember, this is a list of everyone who submitted a questionnaire, not just placed camps.  Even camps not receiving placement can provide their information to Playa Info and be found by everyone.

We are planning to announce Placement in early July.  Why the wait?
Wrangling the information of the 1300 groups requesting placement is time consuming.  We check, we map, we double check, we accommodate changes, we check again.  We rely on information from other departments, the DMV and the ARTery and that requires our patience and collaboration.

I promise that we announce as soon as we possibly can.

 - Answergirl

1 Changes to your Theme Camp, need to cancel?

2 Vehicle Passes

New for 2014: all vehicles driving into Black Rock City must have and display a valid Vehicle Pass. (Motorcycles are exempt from this requirement.) $40 Vehicle Passes are available alongside tickets in all of our sales, including STEP. Vehicle Passes may be used for multiple in-and-outs, but are not transferrable between vehicles. If you will be using multiple vehicles you will need multiple Vehicle Passes.

If you find that your question isn't answered in the FAQ you can also email your question directly to ticketsupport@burningman.com.

If you're wanting more background about Vehicle Pass program please check out this blog post.

3 IN THE TRENCHES

As Black Rock City grows, and more camps rely on power and fuel distribution, the issue of trenching becomes more common place.

Trenching within camps is one thing - Please follow the guidelines listed below.

However Trenching across roads is NOT OKAY.  Okay?  Seriously.

Our temporary roads never seem to recover very well during the event, when trenching across them is followed by a week's worth of foot, bicycle, and mutant vehicle traffic.
Similarly, large Mutant Vehicles with draggable mutations could disrupt trenching, leading to all manner of dangerous conditions.
Please plan accordingly.

If you are an Esplanade Camp and need to trench across this no vehicle traffic road, you must gain DPW approval from your Placer on playa.

Trenching/Digging Conditions (instructions to outside service providers)

Provider shall strive to minimize its impact on the playa and shall restore the playa to its original condition at the conclusion of its operations.  Provider shall use good judgment to minimize playa disturbance by limiting digging and trenching to main power distribution lines running from the power source to key power distribution points, and situations where a safety hazard will be created by leaving wires exposed.

The primary intention for trenching is the burial of electrical cables.  No trenching for other purposes may be completed without prior approval from the DPW Heavy Equipment Manager.
  1. Maximum depth for trenches is not to exceed six inches without prior approval from the DPW Heavy Equipment Manager.
  2. No trenching may be done across city streets without prior approval from the DPW Heavy Equipment Manager.
  3. Power lines must be placed immediately upon completion of trenching operations, and trenches must be appropriately backfilled and compacted.  No trench may remain open overnight or for an extended duration regardless of circumstance.
  4. Special care should be taken to avoid the introduction of foreign matter into open trenches during both installation and removal of cables.
  5. Once cables have been removed, Provider shall follow all Leave No Trace practices which include the restoration of disturbed surfaces to their original state.  Provider shall fill and compact all trenches to a surface level with the surrounding area.

4 A greeting from United Site Services and a long document

Dear Valued Burning Man Customers:

Here at United Site Services, we pride ourselves on delivering prompt reliable service to give you peace of mind.  Please be assured we take customer feedback very seriously and therefore have significantly increased our on-site personnel and equipment to handle the demand for this amazing event we are privileged to be a part of year after year.  We've got your back for all your portable sanitation needs at Burning Man 2014.

How all prepaid sales service agreements will be handled

Each client purchasing a service for Restrooms, RV's, or Holding Tanks will receive one service voucher per service ordered.
In order to receive your service voucher(s) you will designate up to 3 authorized people who are able to go to the United Site Services Camp to receive your pre-paid service vouchers.
The last day to place a service voucher order will be July 25, 2014. All service needs past this date will need to be met by flagging down a driver on site.
A service voucher cannot be ordered to service any equipment other than that of United Site Services. All service vouchers will be pre-paid by credit card. United Site Services will not hold any credit cards for cash to be paid at the end of the Burning Man event.
For holding tank service vouchers, you must know the gallon size of your tank when placing your order. If you do not know the gallon size of your tank, you can pre-pay for the estimated number of gallons you believe your tank to have. If you are only pre-paying for an estimated number of holding tank gallons, your service technician will pump the actual amount of gallons in the tank on site. If this amount of gallons goes over what you have pre-paid for, you will be responsible for paying $1.00 per gallon above the pre-paid amount of gallons. The $1.00 per gallon, above pre-paid gallons, must be paid by cash to the service technician on site.
This year the flag down drivers who usually only accept cash on site, will also be accepting pre-paid service vouchers as cash. Any camp of 15 RV's or more will be set up on a VIP program with a set driver and set block of time for service each day. United Site Services will provide you with your set block of time upon arrival to pick up your service vouchers on a first come, first serve basis.
Each camp set up on a VIP program will receive a Voucher Box that all service vouchers will need to be placed in for each RV requiring service. The number of service vouchers in the box upon service technician arrival will be the number of RV's serviced that day. This will allow camp participants the freedom of leaving their site while still having their service provided as long as their service voucher is in the box. If the voucher box is not returned at the end of the event, a $75.00 fee to replace the box will be charged. Any camp of 5 RV's or less per day will not be pre-scheduled. Pre-paid Service Vouchers can still be purchased, but a service technician will need to be flagged down on site for service to be completed.
No monetary tipping of service technicians is allowed on site.
In order to receive credit post event, any unused service vouchers can be mailed to: United Site Services, Attn: Maria Yanez, 3408 Hillcap Avenue, San Jose, CA 95136 within 30 days after September 1, 2014. Any unused service vouchers received after October 1, 2014 will not be credited.

5 Donate to the 2014 Temple of Grace - a letter from Paul Walker

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all well. I am writing with a request for help. I have been involved with the temple for Burning man for several years now. Through an unfortunate turn of events I need to ask you for help. We are in a situation where we really need help funding the temple this year. There are two main ways you can help out. If you are able to donate anything at all to the temple it would be much appreciated, and your donations when made to BRAF are also tax deductible. But in addition as I went through my list, I know a lot of you have your own lists and groups, I ask that you forward this email or link to your own lists and spread the word. We really are desperate for funds and I know with the help of our community we can succeed.
As some of you know David Best will be doing the temple this year. We are a couple of months behind getting started and really need your help.

Thanks so much
Much love to all

Paul

Burning Professionals on Twitter

While they didn't submit it to us, we happened across this Burning Professionals Twitter account somebody's set up, and thought you'd like to know about it.

So here we are, sharing it with you.

Rent Your Playa Bike in Reno Now

Bikes are a necessity in Black Rock City, and getting a bike in Reno is super convenient -- especially if you’re flying in. There are a number of bike programs in the Reno area devoted to Burners, and they still have plenty available but Reno bikes are in high demand, so reserve yours now!

Loop Cycles
145 Catron Drive, Reno
Loop Cycles is operated by Burners and affiliated with the international Bicycles For Humanity. They are selling new and affordable bike cruisers and accessories online just to Burners, who will pick up their bikes in Reno. After the burn you can keep the bike or donate it back to Loop Cycles to go to Bicycles for Humanity to ship to Namibia, Africa, for gifting to health care workers, students and others. Visit their website for all the info and for reservations, or email them.

Black Rock Bicycles
7875 North Virginia Street, Reno
Operated by Burners, Black Rock Bicycles has bikes for rent and purchase. They always rent/sell out, so reserve early. They also have accessories, including lighting, el-wire kits, baskets, car racks, bells, locks, baskets, trailers, tubes and decor. Customers can also ship their other supplies to them 30 days prior to Burning Man, have them stored without charge, and pick them up along with their bike on their way to the playa. They'll also ship your supplies back to you after the Burn for the cost of the shipping (items must be boxed and ready to ship)! See their website for info, reservations and contact info.

Burner Bikes LLC
Ralph and Barrie in Gerlach (just 8 miles from Burning Man) are renting very affordable used mountain bikes or cruisers in good condition again this year. You can reserve a bike and coordinate with them now for a pick-up time in Gerlach on your way to the playa. They also have bike baskets and locks available for sale, and you will be able to return your bike to them in Gerlach after Burning Man. Best to reserve one now while they last! To do so, and for further information, email them.

Shabbat at Camp Sukkat Shalom in Black Rock City

Jon Mitchell writes about Shabbat at Camp Sukkat Shalom in Black Rock City. Here's an excerpt:

"Friday evening of my second Burn, I had one of the holiest meals I can remember. As the stars came out, a big group gathered at camp Sukkat Shalom, lit candles, gave blessings, drank wine, and fried up crispy, savory latkes for each other to eat. It was an ideal way to ground the frenetic energy of the week in preparation for the following night’s burn. The cross-section of Burners interested in gathering to welcome the Sabbath was unlike that of any other on-playa scene. The wine, talk, and song flowed late into the night."

Ignite Interview with Matt Schultz about Embrace

The Ignite Channel has a fascinating interview with Matt Schultz of the Pier Group about Embrace, his crew's latest massive art installation for Burning Man. You may remember their previous projects, the Pier and the Pier 2.

Coverage of Israel's Midburn Regional Event

Israel held its first official Burning Man regional event in the Negev desert June 3-7. Midburn welcomed around 3,000 participants, and was a great success due to the incredible efforts of its organizers, artists and participants.

It got covered by the Associated Press, and the story was picked up by media outlets (literally) around the world, but the best coverage (and pictures) we've seen so far was this story by Shawn Saleme of Visual News.

We'll have our own story on it coming up soon in the Burning Blog.

The Burning Man Polaroid Project

Kristen writes:

"This was my playa gift to people taking polariods and gifting them to people. I wanted to be able to remember all the amazing creatures I met on the playa and so I took my own digital snapshots of them with their photo. This was a super fun and awesome project that turned out to be so rewarding I wanted to share it with you all.

I was so excited about this when I came home I even went to my local bar and started meeting new people and old and continued to gift. The pictures are from 2012 but better late than never! I hope you all enjoy!"

This is a great little story of the Happy Spot and how it's gone from Black Rock City out into the world, making people happy wherever it shows up. Meps writes:

A BRC Toastmasters Get-Together/Meeting and Speak-A-Thon!

Like to speechify? Pontificate? Step up to the podium? Get up on ye olde soap box? Gerald's got you covered. While there's some jargon in here we admittedly don't understand, we assume Toastmasters folks will get it. He writes:

"If you’re a Toastmaster and can’t be in Malaysia for their International Convention, then bring your CC/CL/other manuals you’d like to advance in, and join us (with friends) for a real Toastmasters meeting - and photos! We plan to cram in speeches, evaluations, and table topics into a one hour session, so on time is a good thing. Prompt arrivals will have the best chances for the most fun and credit.

Looking to come? Cartoon Commune camp, Thursday, 1-2PM. Email Gerflash (DTM) so we can plan ahead.

Just maybe - the pix we take might make it into the TI Magazine! You’ll actually be Toastmastering on-Playa, while some of your TM peeps are conventioning in Kuala Lumpur!"

How Do I Support a Burning Man Art Project? Let Us Count the Ways!

So you'd like to help out with an art project, but you're not sure how. Well, you can gift your services, skills, time, resources, or funding, and there are plenty of projects in need of assistance. How do you find them?

If you'd like to support a project with your skills, resources or another kind of contribution, you can find projects seeking help in the Spark system, designed to facilitate collaborative connections.

You can also watch the Jackrabbit Speaks and/or your local Regional announce list for requests from artists for assistance, take a look in the Art and Performance discussion area of the ePlaya, browse Burning Man's Facebook Page, or seek out specific projects in our list of Art Installations. Finally, once you're at Burning Man, visit the ARTery to see which artists are seeking volunteer help on the playa.

Like to help fund a project? Find a complete list of projects doing online crowdfunding on our Support a Project page. (If you'd like to have your project included on that page, here's how to do it.)

Make a Tax-Deductible Donation to a Playa Project through BRAF!

The Black Rock Arts Foundation is thrilled to be in the fortunate position of being able to fiscally sponsor projects bound for this year's Burning Man event. When BRAF was founded, it was the art at Burning Man that set BRAF's standard for participatory, community-driven public art. With this high standard in mind, BRAF established their grants and civic arts programs.

Now, with the recent changes to Burning Man’s organizational structure, BRAF is able to directly lend our support to on-playa art activities. BRAF has offered Fiscal Sponsorship to all honorarium art projects that were not fully funded by their honoraria, and 13 projects signed up. Burning Man participants can now make tax deductible donations to these projects though BRAF. We hope that this creates new fundraising opportunities for these worthy projects.

Now you can receive a tax deduction for donating to these exemplary projects, including this year's Temple.

Browse a complete list of these projects and donate what you can to the projects that call to you. Help these artists realize their dreams of bringing their art to Burning Man!

Inspireality Palace - Inspired by Spiraling Reality

Well now, this certainly looks rad. Gloria writes:

"Gloria Lamb (Los Angeles Regional Contact) & Perry Freeze, along with SuperFriends Synaesthesia & LA Fire Brigade want to bring Inspireality Palace to Black Rock City 2014!

Within the grand caravansary of Black Rock City, Inspireality Palace is an inviting structure, a journey of self-discovery, a communal space and a transformational experience. Two mountainous peaks, draped with hundreds of shiny black rectangles, sparkle from afar. Weary travelers drawn to the abstract edifice discover one of two entrances disguised in the hard outer shell. Inward spiraling arches guide travelers through a warmth of feeling created by intense contrasts of scale, materials, light and sound. As in nature, this large double spiral comes together at its center to form a universal connection. Follow-up project to Circumvolute (2012).

Watch our silly video. It will all make more sense :)

Inspireality website. And Facebook page."

Independent 3D Film, The Art of Burning, Launches Indiegogo Campaign

"The Art of Burning" team has been working on an amazing IMAX-style 3D film about the art of Burning Man. This is going to be epic. They write:

"This indiegogo campaign aims to raise the necessary funds to complete the editing, sound mixing, color grading, music and other post-production work that is required to finish the IMAX-style 3D film "The Art of Burning". With these completion funds, the film could be finished as early as October 2014.

Here's the Indiegogo campaign.

Arnaud Paris and his team have been working on The Art of Burning for over 3 years and won a grant from the French Film Commission for the project. Paris, along with producer Andrea Biscaro, supplemented the grant with their own funds to cover the substantial costs of shooting at Burning Man in IMAX-style 3D. Additionally, both the French and Italian teams donated their time and equipment to the film.

'Burning Man art has become a movement in itself, it is my hope that this film helps give it a voice and space outside the festival and to the larger global audience,' explained Paris."

"Compression Art & Fire is a volunteer and multi-community driven celebration of the culture of Burning Man beyond the playa. A 2014 Black Rock Arts Foundation grant recipient, and an "Official Nevada 150 Event" celebrating the state's birth, Compression returns for its 7th year bringing fire performance and sculpture, flame effects, alternative and youth dance, costuming, music, mutant vehicles and more out of the dust and into downtown Reno -- and now, beginning this summer, into other Nevada communities!

Join Nevada Burners as they bring Compression to Lovelock (the capital of Pershing County, the county where Black Rock City resides) on June 20, Fernley on June 28, Austin (at the Smith Creek Dry Lake) on July 12, and wrapping it up in Reno on July 26. These evening events are free and open to all ages.
