While the deadline for submissions is February 15 at 12(NOON) PST, you know not to wait until the very last minute, right? That's how things go wonky and result in fret and strife, right? Yep, you know it, we know it.

We're very excited to see the amazing proposals coming in, so keep 'em coming and thank you, artists!

Coyote Nose the Ten Principles: Red Wagon

In his post "Red Wagon," Burning Man's longtime City Superintendent Tony "Coyote" Perez writes about gifting and how Burning Man's culture spreads through the Regional Network -- in this case at Michigan's Lakes of Fire Regional event.

This post is part of the ongoing Ten Principles blog series.

Burning Man: NYC’s Search for The Mythical Unicorn

This interesting article came across our radar, and we really dug it. It delves into the challenges faced by folks working to bring Burning Man culture to urban environments off the playa -- in this case, New York City. Check it out.

Burning While Black

Honeyshot writes:

"Nick Powers, ten-year Playa vet and literature professor has a new book featuring Burning Man. After reporting from war zones, protests or natural disasters, he returned to Black Rock City to purge, heal and recreate hope. 'The Ground Below Zero' is reviewed here."

First Mathematical Model of a Gift Economy

While we can't confirm it's actually the first of its kind, this great article provides a mathematical model and fascinating analysis of a gift economy.

Which is particularly intriguing to us, for obvious reasons. :-)

"Look in Your Eyes" - A Song for the Burning Man Culture

Felipe (aka Dr. Fiesta) writes:

"Out of my joy and gratitude for Burning Man and its cultural impact and influence in my life I felt a necessity to express and celebrate its power through my passion. The result was 'Look in your Eyes'.

A song from Felipe Tarantino's debut album 'Social Jet Lag' - Recorded in L.A. and produced by SUPERTRAMP's guitarist, it contains top notch organic production values with lyrics about everybody's favorite city. The catch: only a Burner will understand what the song is truly about.

A gift to my fellow Burners, you can download the song for free at www.FelipeTarantino.com. Also, visit Felipe's Facebook page."

Aviators! Work with the Black Rock City Airport!

This comes from Avi8trix, the (appropriately named) Unicommander for the Black Rock City Airport:

"Yeah you ... the ones that keep noticing (and accurately identifying) the airplanes, ultralights, experimentals, and helicopters that orbit, land, depart and hover over our fair city.

Did you realize Burning Man has its own airport?!? It's 88NV,  Black Rock City Municipal Airport, second busiest in Nevada for the week of the event. WE NEED YOU!! Our unique little aerodrome is growing and evolving and we'll take all the help we can get.

Are you an Air Traffic Controller, pilot, airline employee, dispatcher or obsessive lover of all things aviation? We'd love to tap your sharp minds, strong arms and community enthusiasm. Or perhaps you're not an aviator, but have a flair for the dramatic (unleash your inner TSA employee, customs inspector, border guard or whatever you wish) and would like to help us welcome new arrivals.

If you can offer a few hours, a lot of hours, or want to become part of our camp of Aviators, we've got something for you to do!! Simply select 'Airport' on the Burner Volunteer Form or contact milehigh@burningman.com."

The Life Cube Project, Downtown Las Vegas

Scott writes:

"We are SO excited to create a Life Cube installation for Downtown Las Vegas in February/March 2014. The success of The Life Cube  over the last four years could not have happened without the hundreds of supporters, contributors, volunteers, and an ever-growing community of 'Cube-ists'.

Learn all about the project, its origins, its mission, its outreach efforts in the Las Vegas area -- and make a donation -- on their Indiegogo page.

Whether it's $1 or $1000, please consider a donation. Every little bit helps. If you're here in Las Vegas or supporting The Life Cube from afar, we're glad to have you with us! Your donation, combined with hundreds of others, will enable us to reach our goal!

Every donor gets a wish! There is other stuff you get (see rewards!) -- but most of all, whether small or large,  you will know that your donation really does support this art project and its message."

Support BRAS: Bringing a Massive, Climbable Telescope to the Playa!

We love nerdtastic interactive projects like this. Wabi Sabi (Editor's note: love the name) writes:

"The Black Rock Astronomical Society is based in New York and building a 20" aperture telescope that will stand about 10' feet tall when complete. The telescope will go from 15 to 90 degrees from the horizontal and will be controlled with a motor. To make sure we don't miss any nearby supernovas it will also rotate 360 degrees horizontally. Visitors will be able to climb the telescope in order to reach the eyepiece. Visitors can then take a moment to sit atop the telescope and contemplate their place in the universe while scanning the sky for planets and nebulae.

The telescope will be housed in the BRC Observatory which is being built in CA by the Desert Wizards of Mars who built the Seraphim and the Human Spirit and then wowed Burning Man with the Mars Rover Art Car. The observatory will host star parties, lectures, and projections. We will also have one night when we invite all starships, spaceships, explorers, shuttles and all manner of interplanetary vehicles to gather for a giant party.

Right now, we are looking for volunteers for who can speak on cosmology, astronomy, telescopes or related topics at the observatory; who have done metalworking and can contribute their time and skills to building crucial pieces of the telescope; any volunteers who believe they can contribute to the overall project; and finally support via our Kickstarter that we will launch in the next couple of months.

Stay updated on the build and Kickstarter through our Facebook page."

Join Us for Figment ALPHA 2014 - Darlington, MD - April 25-27

We're psyched to see how Figment has evolved over the years. Way to make it happen, people! Not That Dave writes:

"We’re all creative, right? So what would happen if everyone were expected to participate creatively in our events? What if we actively enforced the 'no spectators' rule? This is the experiment that we’re conducting at ALPHA!

At ALPHA, everyone is expected to bring a project… but a project can be anything at all as long as it’s interactive! Working on an interactive sculpture? Bring it out to share! Got something you’d like to talk about? Run a workshop or meet-up on a specific topic. Working on a new performance and need feedback? You set the framework, and the other participants will fill in. Building something for Black Rock City and need to do a test build? Do it at ALPHA and let participants try it out!

We're very happy to invite you to ALPHA 2014! We had a total blast last year at our first ALPHA ... and we look forward to creating another awesome event that brings creative people together to make and share awesome projects.

ALPHA 2014 will be at Camp Ramblewood in Darlington, Maryland, from April 25-27, 2014. Full information.

Tickets are on sale now. Cabins and meal plans also available. Let us know your ideas for how to make the event as awesome as possible at alpha@figmentproject.org! We look forward to creating with you at ALPHA 2014!"

Black Rock Solar Uses the Sun to Give Back to Rural Nevada Communities

The folks at Black Rock Solar sent along this update:

"Thanks to two 100-kW solar projects just completed by Black Rock Solar, Lovelock, Nev., will save thousands of dollars annually on its water system. The electricity generated by the 770 brand new photovoltaic panels could lower future rate increases for residents of this rural town east of Pyramid Lake. Black Rock Solar – bringing Burning Man's positive impact home for Nevadans!

Best Wedding Video Ever

This was sent in by friends of the happy couple (also, congratulations!):

"This wedding was an example of Burning Man at its finest. Sans wind, 75 degrees and sunny, the quick Karmic pocket of the earth that is Black Rock City serves up the most magical or most challenging of times depending on what you put out there.

For Shannon & Janice Talty they got what they deserved: a perfect day, ideal weather conditions, a pirate ship helmed by Buc Avanizini Captain of the GLDDGR, a playa cruise to The Temple, a stunning sunset for the ceremony, and a twilight cruise accompanied by best friends and champagne showers.

The wedding was magical. The final moment was captured by Burning Man photographer Peter Gordon and is included in his new book "Life & Death - The Temple". Inspired by the beautiful weddings at Burning Man. Peter will be embarking on a new photo exhibition featuring Weddings at Burning Man in 2014."

Here's the video.

The Virgin Letter Project: What Would You Say to the Virgin Burner You Once Were?

We love this project. It's kind of a mind-blowing exercise, if you think about it. They write:

"What would you say to the Virgin Burner you once were? Write a letter! We are ready to receive your letters for the 2014 Burn. These letters are collected online and at regional Burning Man events and distributed on playa to the current year's virgins. Over the past two years we have collected and distributed nearly 1,000 letters.

The Burn is still months away, but the VLP is collecting your letters.

Support Burners Without Borders' Work in the Philippines

Burners Without Borders has partnered with Philippines Communitere to facilitate a  space for the local community and international NGO efforts. The Communications Resource Center is serving as a meeting place for disaster relief trainings and office space of the United Nations Population Fund. Communitere is collaborating with First Response Radio, PECOJON and World Vision to set up a humanitarian based radio station at the communications hub.

Working together, these organizations aim to help inform disaster-affected communities on relief and reconstruction efforts happening in Tacloban and throughout the affected region. The logistics center, or in playa-speak, the makers' space, is also in development.

The plan for the logistics center is to transform two shipping containers en route from Australia into a home for the Tool Lending Library (TLL) and a construction skills training center. The TLL will enable local community members to rebuild their homes and businesses with borrowed tools. This resource coupled with the skills trainings will help them rebuild safer and stronger. In addition, these trainings provide an opportunity to hone vocational skills they can use in the pursuit of a new livelihood.

Communitere is currently seeking monetary donations to secure the land lease where this logistics center will be built.

You can support this project by making a donation to BWB. Thank you!
