EVENTS & HAPPENINGS:

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

In 1997, Marian Goodell started the Jackrabbit Speaks email newsletter in response to an increasing demand for information flowing from the Burning Man organization to a rapidly-growing Burner population. In-person town hall-style meetings were becoming impractical, the diaspora more geographically widespread, and email culture was reaching critical mass.

Since then, the JRS has been a simple (some would say charmingly so) text-only missive. Until today. We've taken the (some would say long-time coming) leap to a modern email system, including graphical capabilities that let us share the gorgeous imagery of Burning Man, and administrative functions that will smooth your list-management experience. You can expect to see the masthead image change regularly, and other graphical surprises to tickle your eyeballs (watch for the rabbits!).

The Jackrabbit Speaks is Burning Man's primary mouthpiece out to the world, and it always has been ... so for us this is truly an auspicious occasion.

In light of all that, we figured we'd do it up right ... this JRS is packed with some of the most highly-anticipated information you'll get this year. We're serving up the Burning Man 2014 art theme, complete ticket information, instructions for applying for a Burning Man art grant, and our comprehensive Traffic Mitigation Plan (critical to our future).

The Man burns in (a numerically auspicious) 234 days!

Announcing the Burning Man 2014 Art Theme: Caravansary

For countless centuries, travelers along the Silk Route crossed paths in caravansaries, a network of oases and sanctuaries that dotted the 4,000-mile road from Europe to East Asia. These bustling caravan stops offered more than just shelter from the desert wilderness; they were vital centers of cultural exchange, bringing together traders, pilgrims, monks, nomads, traveling entertainers, and wild-eyed adventurers from all points of the compass to share their stories around a common fire.

Burning Man 2014 Ticketing Information

We know you've been patiently awaiting the ticket information for the year, so here it is! Below you’ll find the information on all of our sales along with some important general ticketing information.

General Ticket Information:

Just like last year, you must be pre-registered through the Burner Profile system to participate in any of our ticket sales. (Hint: if you haven’t already, set up your Burner Profile now.) Ticket prices are the same as they were in 2013. (Yes, you read that correctly.) We’ll once again offer a Low Income Ticket Program, and an online Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) to facilitate the safe, hassle-free exchange of tickets between people in the aftermarket.

Just like last year, you must be pre-registered through the Burner Profile system to participate in any of our ticket sales. (Hint: if you haven’t already, set up your Burner Profile now.) Ticket prices are the same as they were in 2013. (Yes, you read that correctly!) We’ll once again offer a Low Income Ticket Program, and an online Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) to facilitate the safe, hassle-free exchange of tickets between people in the aftermarket.

There are a few important changes for 2014: First, we are pleased to announce that we are now working with San Francisco-based Ticketfly as our ticketing technology partner. We are excited about the robustness of their system, their commitment to superior customer service, and how well-suited they are to support us in our continuing evolution.

Second is the introduction of the Vehicle Pass. Traffic in and out of Black Rock City is the singular limiting factor to the event’s future, and the BLM and Nevada Department of Transportation are pressuring us to reduce the number of vehicles on the road and pay for road repairs. As part of a larger program to encourage ridesharing, all vehicles driving into Black Rock City will now be required to have a Vehicle Pass. For 2014 there will be 35,000 Vehicle Passes available. They'll cost $40 each, and will be available for purchase in all of our ticket sales.

We have also expanded ticket delivery options. In addition to our past methods, we have added UPS delivery for the US and Canada (2nd Day Air for the US and Expedited for Canada).

As has been the case for a few years, the only payment types accepted are Mastercard or Visa credit cards, or debit cards with either the Visa or Mastercard symbols. If you don't already have one of these cards, you will need to obtain a one-time use card.

Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP): dates TBA

STEP has proven an invaluable resource for our community seeking legitimate tickets at face value outside of our regular sales. Again in 2014 we'll offer STEP to facilitate the secure, safe, hassle-free exchange of tickets. Tickets bought through STEP are transferable, but they are ONLY available for pickup at Will Call. STEP opening and closing dates, as well as full information on how to participate will be announced on tickets.burningman.com as well as via the JRS.

Ticket Delivery: starting mid-June

Folks ask why we send out our tickets in June. Shipping tickets in the summer allows for a longer window to buy and sell tickets through our Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP), helps put a damper on the scalper market, limits the amount of time scammers have to counterfeit tickets and sell them to unsuspecting Burners, and allows us to include a printed Survival Guide with each ticket. Tickets purchased in the Pre-Sale, the Directed Group Sale and the Individual Sale will start shipping in mid-June. We cannot give you an exact delivery date since that depends on where they are being sent, the method of delivery you select, and other factors outside of our control. But rest assured: you will receive an email when your tickets have shipped. If you choose Will Call when you are buying

As always, you can find all official, current ticket information on our ticket page, and answers to your questions in our revamped online ticket support desk. You can also follow @BMantickets on Twitter for real-time ticketing announcements.

Create Your Burner Profile

In order to participate in any of our ticket sales, you must have a Burner Profile. We recommend you create one now, lest you forget this essential step in the ticket-buying process. It only takes a moment ... g'head:

Burning Man Traffic Mitigation Plan

Solving Burning Man's Traffic Problem

Traffic is the greatest impediment to the growth and sustainability of Black Rock City. Burning Man is under pressure from the Bureau of Land Management and Nevada Department of Transportation to reduce the number of cars entering the event. Highways 447 and 34 are at max capacity during the event and we're being asked to pay for road damage caused by participant vehicles. Road travel represents 60% of the carbon emissions related to the event.

And the #1 challenge experienced by participants last year? Entry and Exodus.

Clearly, it's critical we address the traffic issue -- and we can only solve this problem by working together as a community. To that end, Burning Man is expanding existing programs and launching new ones to encourage participants to rideshare or take alternative transportation. These programs include:

Awareness

Our community has always policed itself -- and changed its behavior when necessary -- through awareness. That's how we became the largest Leave No Trace event in the world, against seemingly impossible odds. Burning Man will continue pushing this information out into the community throughout the year so we can solve these issues together.

Burner Express

Burner Express exceeded all expectations during its inaugural run in 2013, accommodating 2,459 riders to and from San Francisco and Reno-Tahoe International Airport, and participant feedback about the experience was overwhelmingly positive. This year we will expand the service, increasing capacity to 5,000 riders. Tickets for Burner Express will go on sale in late February ... keep an eye out for an announcement of exactly when.

Rideshare Board

Burning Man hosts a rideshare board that facilitates hundreds of shared rides to the playa annually. We've revamped and significantly improved it over the last couple years.

BMIR mobile app and traffic reports

Burning Man Information Radio will be available via mobile apps and will provide “no BS” hourly traffic updates for Highway 447 and Empire, during ingress and Exodus. This will provide participants with timely information on road status and optimum times to travel to or from BRC.

Vehicle passes

All vehicles entering Black Rock City will be required to purchase a Vehicle Pass for $40. Our goal is to incentivize participants to reduce the number of vehicles entering BRC by increasing the number of participants per vehicle. Vehicle Passes can be purchased when you buy tickets online. There are 35,000 passes available this year. This may change in future years depending on how successful we are at reducing traffic in 2014.

More Arrivals by Air

Arrivals to Black Rock City via our airport are have been. In order to allow the increase to continue, we need to work permitting agencies and air charters to accommodate higher capacities, while continuing to support our established Burner aviator community.

Regional Container Shipping Program

We will continue to encourage regional groups to share the cost of shipping their gear to Gerlach for delivery to the playa. Several Regional groups (including New York, Boston, Washington DC, and Philadelphia) run container programs and Burning Man has an instruction guide on how to coordinate these efforts.

Near-Playa Shipping Container Program

In 2012, the Burning Man organization began renting near-playa shipping containers to theme camps for storage of their infrastructure elements. We will be increasing the space available for containers this year and into the future -- the more stuff that comes in large containers means less individual vehicles are required.

Traffic Management in Empire & Gerlach

Burning Man will deploy traffic control flaggers in and around Gerlach (and possibly Empire) to help ensure uninterrupted traffic flow to the event.

Playadipity

Have you ever experienced a random playa coincidence? Playa magic? Serendipity? You likely have, whatever you call it ... that stuff's for real.

Trevor has. Enjoy "Playadipity", a Tale From the Playa from Trevor Hughes.

Burning Man is not a Meritocracy

Caveat Magister writes: "The most interesting new challenge I see emerging comes as Burning Man is increasingly attended, referenced, and cited, by both academics and members of the tech industry – work cultures that, in their own ways, claim to be highly driven meritocracies.

Both are increasingly citing Burning Man as a model and a form of inspiration.  And yet Burning Man ... fundamentally and unambiguously ... is not a meritocracy.  Is, in fact, perhaps our most significant cultural movement at the present time to directly challenge the very idea that a meritocracy is the way we want to order society."

"A Whale of a Tale" & "The Journal is Home"

"Hi there,

My name is Terry Pratt, one of the co-founders of the Burning Man Media Department's 'Profiles In Dust' series. During production of our upcoming 'PID International CORE Projects' documentary and a documentary for Burning Man Project, we managed to film all sorts of other delightful moments. My wife (Noelle Charles) and I were asked if we could tow Pepe Ozans Narwhal around the Playa this year.

Here is a video of those adventures: https://vimeo.com/77116062

The latest video is a highlight video of our experience at Burning man this year: https://vimeo.com/77116062

And finally, here is my Flickr Album from this year: http://www.flickr.com/photos/15913381@N00/sets/72157635502784631/

Peace,

Terry Pratt"
