We Bought Fly Ranch
Burning Man Project has purchased the Fly Ranch property, 3,800 acres of land located twenty-one miles north of Gerlach in Washoe County, Nevada.
Fly Ranch opens the door to new possibilities, new cultural experiments, and art and innovation projects on a scale never before envisioned.
Securing a year-round location for decades to come at Fly Ranch is the next step in the grand experiment that is Burning Man.

Embed Artists Everywhere: They Are the Community Innovators the World Needs
Caveat Magister writes:
"So far our look at arts funding solutions in the 21st century has focused on the premise that art which moves through our community gains greater value in the marketplace — thus giving artists who are part of our community leverage.
But perhaps the more vital realization is the other side of that principle: art which moves through communities helps those communities. Art — and artists — are good for communities, and communities which support them flourish."

A Tale of Two (Impossible) Cities: Plato’s Republic and Black Rock City
Larry will like this comparison. Otter writes:
"For the seventh time in seven years, I am spending Labor Day journeying from one impossible city to another, from Black Rock City—the desert site of Burning Man—to Plato’s Republic, the first topic of my Introduction to Philosophy class. As usual, I find myself in something of a daze as I stare out the plane window, not merely from having lost myself to the desert sun and its devotees, but from the sheer intellectual distance I will traverse in a matter of hours."

How Do I Support a Burning Man Art Project?
So you'd like to help out with an art project, but you're not sure how. Well, you can gift your services, skills, time, resources, or funding. There are plenty of projects in need of assistance. Here's how to find them:

Flaming Insect Invasion on the Playa
 |
|
| |
Shelley writes
New Zealanders are bringing a unique interactive art installation to Burning Man! Ugly, prehistoric, endangered, huge and heavy, The Giant Weta is made of steel and made with love by Auckland Burners. Never heard of a Weta before? They are a large native bush-dwelling insect of New Zealand.
The Giant Weta is a 2016 Burning Man Honoraria art grant recipient and the first large art installation to travel to the playa from New Zealand. The project is led by Hippathy Valentine – a Burning Man Regional Contact and artist who is workign hard to grow our community and introduce Burning Man to others through art. Hippathy is most well known for his work on the Temple for Christchurch, a temple built in a civic environment to commemorate the 2011 Canterbury (NZ) Earthquakes.
To craft it out of metal, create flame effects shooting from its antennae, transport it to Black Rock City all the way from Auckland, New Zealand, and then back to the Paddock for Kiwiburn 2017. Help us crazy Kiwis out!

Black Rock Lighthouse Service: Support a Beacon for Burners
Scribe writes:
"Lighthouses will jut out of the playa like quartz crystals, a 60-foot tower connected by its precariously angled brethren by swinging bridges, half-dozen in all, scanning their varied horizons with beams of light or bursts of fire. Each room of each lighthouse will be a new artistic exploration while the outsides will be climbable playgrounds.
The Black Rock City Lighthouse Service is being built by a heroic team of artists who brought you Temple of Flux, Bottlecap Gazebo, Temple of Confessions, Photo Chapel, and many more projects over the years. But they need help. The father-son team of Jonny and Max Poynton and their huge crew are giving everything they have to this project. And they still need you to finish, transport, and install it. They need you so bad that they’re willing to bestow fabulous prizes on you or put their freaky friends at your service."

747 Landing This Year
Who wouldn't love to see this one happen? Ken writes:
"Big Imagination has been working tireless since 2014 to bring a 747 to Burning Man, and now it looks like they just might do it.
Cutting up and moving a 747 to Burning Man is no easy task. Put together it’s two stories tall, three busses wide, and almost half a football field long. The project is so huge they’ve had to break it up into two years: the upper half of the plane in 2016, the lower half in 2017.
It’s also enormously expensive. To help cover costs Big Imagination has launched a crowdfunding campaign and it needs your help to take off."

Help Keep the Good Times Rollin' at the Black Rock Roller Disco
The GodFather writes:
The Black Rock Roller Disco is one of the happiest places on the playa! 2016 will mark 18 years we have been bringing the roller disco to Burning Man. We are very Radically Self-reliant people, but this time we need a little help. We're in the last two weeks of our Kickstarter fundraising campaign. We're doing well raising 60% of our $4,000 goal. We need help with that last 40%. Every little bit helps. Please help if you can!

Opening Saturday, June 25, 6:00 — 9:00 pm
Where: Smith Andersen North Gallery

William Binzen writes:
"I was the original photographer in 1990 on the playa, and photographed the event for 21 straight years. Work is shot on 8x10 and medium format film. Magical realism and surrealism styles are well represented.
Waking Dream at Smith Andersen North is the world premiere of this body of work and contains the missing chapter, the untold story of the well-springs of serious art at Burning Man.
There will be a show catalogue with backstories for the photographs. Print sizes range from 24x36” up to 60x80” and high resolution panoramas are ten feet long.
In addition to my photography there will be work by David Best.
