ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|

We're excited to announce that after three years of working to make it happen, Burning Man has officially transitioned to a non-profit! That's right ... our fiscal structure now mirrors our intentions, and it positions us to bring more of the Burning Man ethos and values to the world at large. Oh and in case you're wondering what this means for the Burning Man event in the desert? Simple answer: you should expect to see no substantive difference whatsoever.
And now onward to the task at hand! The Individual Ticket Sale went off without a hitch last Wednesday, and while demand surpassed supply (welcome to the new Burning Man reality, folks), the ticketing systems handled the deluge like a champ. Big thanks to our ticketing partner Ticketfly, our Ticketing Team (heroes of customer service), and the Burning Man Tech Team for making it happen.
The Burnal Equinox was this last Saturday, marking the high-water point between Burns. Or would that be the low-water mark? Either way, around the world, Burners gathered together in formal and informal events to mark the occasion ... we hope you stopped for a moment to commemorate it in your own way -- or heck, do it now! Perhaps cram your face into your dustiest playa tote and take a big whiff? Mmmmm ... yep, that'll do it.
Oh but wait! If you're in the Bay Area, we're going to be celebrating THIS Saturday. Check it out.
The Man burns in 180 days!

It's Official: Burning Man Transitions to a Non-Profit!
We're excited to announce that Burning Man achieved an historic milestone last month with the successful transition of the 24-year-old organization to a non-profit organization! The process has taken nearly three years, and now more than ever we’re positioned to support the global cultivation of art and community based on the 10 Principles.
“After 24 years of tending our garden in the desert, we now have the means to cultivate its culture worldwide,” said founder Larry Harvey. “Sometimes things just pop and this is one of those moments.”

Individual Ticket Sale Recap
38,000 tickets to Burning Man were sold to eager Burners in 44 minutes on Wednesday, and that? Is pretty impressive.
We'd like to offer our heartfelt thanks to our ticketing partner Ticketfly, the Burning Man Ticket Team and Burning Man's Technology Team for kicking some serious bootie, making this by far the smoothest ticket sales day we've had in yeeeeears.
Demand was higher than supply, which means that unfortunately not everybody who wanted tickets got them. But the systems held up under the load, and if you were first come, you were first served.
If you didn't get tickets, don't despair. There are plenty of opportunities to get a ticket coming down the pike, including the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) system, the OMG Sale in August and on the open market. If you really want a ticket, you'll find one.
And please, the only way to prevent the buying and selling of tickets above face value is to refuse to participate in these profiteering scams. If you only resell and buy tickets at face value, we all win.
As always, you can find official ticket information on our ticket page, and answers to your questions in our revamped ticket support desk. You can also follow @BMantickets on Twitter for real-time ticketing announcements.

Now's the Time to Buy or Rent Your Burning Man Bike in Reno
Bikes are a necessity in Black Rock City, and getting a bike in Reno is super convenient -- especially if you’re flying in. There are a number of bike programs in the Reno area devoted to Burners, and they're gearing up sales and rentals. Reno bikes are in high demand, so reserve yours now!
Kiwanis Bike Program
145 Catron Drive, Reno
Our friends at the Kiwanis Bike Program sell affordable used bicycles and accessories (lights, el-wire kits, baskets, car racks, locks, fat seats, and bells) to Burners. And if you return your bike to Kiwanis, they’ll refurbish and reuse it for kids! You can also store your bike with them until next year's Burn. All funds support bike repairs, bike donation and bicycling education for at-risk kids in the Reno area. Purchase and reserve a bike now while supplies last. Email questions to kiwanis_bikes@sbcglobal.net.
Loop Cycles
Loop Cycles is operated by Burners and affiliated with the international Bicycles For Humanity. They are selling new and affordable bike cruisers and accessories online just to Burners, who will pick up their bikes in Reno. You can keep the bike, or donate it back to Loop Cycles to give to Bicycles for Humanity to ship to Namibia, Africa, for gifting to health care workers, students, and others. Bike reservations end on May 1, 2014, and the Reno pickup/dropoff location is TBD -- customers will be notified and their website updated when the location is determined. Email them at info@loopcycles.org.
Black Rock Bicycles
7875 North Virginia Street, Reno
Operated by Burners, Black Rock Bicycles has bikes for rent and purchase. They always sell out, so reserve early. They also have accessories, including lighting, el-wire kits, baskets, car racks, bells, locks, baskets, trailers, tubes and decor. Customers can ship their supplies to them 30 days prior to Burning Man, have them stored without charge, and pick them up along with their bike on their way to the playa. They'll also ship your supplies back to you after the Burn for the cost of the shipping (items must be boxed and ready to ship)! See their website for info, reservations, and contact info.

How to Budget For Burning Man
Travel blogger Alex in Wanderland kept a detailed dollar for dollar breakdown of the cost of her first Burning Man experience. Conclusion? Worth every penny:
"While there are insane amounts of information online about preparing for Burning Man, there was one question I had a hard time finding a straight answer to: exactly how much does Burning Man cost? I’m providing my own personal dollar for dollar cost breakdown in hopes that it helps someone else prepare for the Playa."

Growing Up Burning: On Kids at Burning Man
Caveat Magister has waded into the debate (if you'd call it that) about bringing kids to Burning Man, and in doing so, asked for input from a great source: Electra Carr grew up as a Burner kid, attending Burning Man starting at age 11. Her perspective is interesting and well worth a read. Here's a snippet:
"I believe Burning Man has a way of affecting people, all people. It’s a place where fifty thousand plus people had reached into their souls and smeared what they found across a desert. I don’t think you can expect to take a child to Burning Man and not have them be affected any less than an adult might. For me those experiences I had and the changes I went through were all beneficial in the long run."

Black Rock Solar: The Video
Our friends at Black Rock Solar share this great video showcasing their incredible work:
"Black Rock Solar began as a dedicated group of mainly DPW volunteers at the 2007 environmentally themed Burning Man – The Green Man. We’ve now gone from that first 30 kilowatt array on the playa to more than 4 megawatts (that’s nearly 20,000 panels!) of low-cost, high-quality solar power installed for other nonprofits, schools, hospitals and tribes throughout Nevada.
We’ve also upped our game with this slick new video telling the world about how Black Rock Solar positively impacts our community and the future. Thanks to our board member Dan Porras for making BRS look so good!
Please consider a donation. We appreciate your support!"

'Take Me Home' - My Journey Back to Temple
 |
|
| |
Pilgrim writes:
"My first journey to the Burn in 2011 marked a massive life shift, importantly a turning away from a corporate career and a return to my life blood - making music. The Temple captured my heart and inspired two dedicated years of clearing the grief I had been carrying from a very young age around my mother's death. In 2013 I returned to the Burn, a healed man, and offered my service as a Temple Guardian to this transformational space.
Just days before I flew out from Australia to the Burn, I finished the final touches on a fittingly titled album 'Home'. The track 'Take Me Home' marked a coming home for me, not just to my music, but also to myself and to a place of peace with my mother's death. It also marked my return to where it all changed and a completion of one of the most tumultuous and rewarding two years of my life.
This track is for anyone who has made the pilgrimage to Temple, whether it be from camp, from your hometown, or even from across the world. To know what it is to be cradled in her arms, as sweet tears wash over you, offering your heart and soul to her sacred walls. I offer it as a gift to all fellow pilgrims.
You can download it here.

Two Weeks at the Lake Lahontan Retreat and Water Show
[If you're wondering about the reference in the title, that's the phrase that was on early arrival wristbands this year. Those Gate kids and their sense of humor, I tell ya.] So, without further ado ... here's a spectacular gallery of images sent to us from Paulius Musteikis:
"Fragments of how we did build, partied our asses off, met beautiful people, participated, slept in the dust, greeted the rising sun, burned everything and learned something. Again!
Here's the gallery."

BIXI 909 - Dragon Tortoise Mutant Vehicle
This is cool. Captain Whopper (clearly vying for Playa Name of the Day accolades) writes:
"Our vision for this year is to bring to life a Bixi, an ancient mythological creature found on the silk road, at Burning Man 2014. With the body of a tortoise and the head of a dragon, Bixi is the first-born son of the great dragon of China.
Bixi will be a rolling 'Caravansary': a sanction of comfort, able to host more than 100 people for great desert escapades. We’re ready to create a beautiful piece as a contribution to Burning Man as well as the perfect venue for our playa caravans. We invite you to be a part of our project and experience this year’s Burning Man on Bixi.
We are a small group of young artists that need all the help we can get to make this project a reality. Our project last year was a success, but this one is much bigger.
Here's our Kickstarter link."
