ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|

Things are heating up in Burning Manlandia ... we're entering the fundraising season (it's pretty much officially a season at this point, because projects!) and the get-our-ass-in-gear-and-what-the-hell-are-we-doing-for-Burning-Man-this-year season, too. Yes, that's a real thing. We didn't make that up. You know it, we know it.
Speaking of which, theme camp placement questionnaires are due April 30. Reserve a location for your placed camp at Black Rock City? Now is your time. Be the hero you were meant to be.
Also, the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) opens up April 21. And Burner Express shuttle bus tickets go on sale April 23. Game on, people!
Meanwhile, around the world, Burning Man is happening, like, everywhere. In fact, AfrikaBurn (now in its 8th year, and expecting over 8,000 people) happens at the end of this month in South Africa. Yes, Burning Man ... in Africa. So yes, we're serving up plenty of international dishes in this and future JRS's, because that's where it's happening, folks, and it's awesome.
The Man burns in 134 days!

And some cool, new stuff for 2014:

Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) Opens April 21
The Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) is an online system that facilitates the safe resale of tickets that have been purchased directly from Burning Man. It’s designed to provide a hassle-free, secure way of buying and selling tickets while avoiding scammers, counterfeits and scalpers.
After a slight delay, the program opens April 21 ... for all the details about how to participate -- whether you're buying or selling tickets -- visit our ticket page.

A Word on Burning Man and Why It Should Be Compulsory
Whether you're a virgin Burner (please don't say "Burgin" ... like, ever) or a vet, you'll love this wonderful piece of writing sprinkled with stunning photography from Rachael Wright:
"I’m not entirely certain what drew me to the idea of Burning Man in the first place, but it’s handsdown the best thing I’ve ever done. I affectionally call it Disneyland for adults, on crack. And by this I mean that everything you could ever imagine is brighter and harder and more crisp and colourful and goddamn fun than you ever thought was possible."

Wait. The Mars Rover? At Burning Man?
Full disclosure: the folks behind the Mars Rover Art Car pulled our butts from the proverbial fire when it came to getting the live webcast from Black Rock City up and running in 2013. Our sincere thanks to them for their efforts. Which is not to say that this isn't a cool story in its own right. Check it out:
Make Magazine covers the Mars Rover Art Car, and their eventful excursion to Black Rock City in 2013.

Porta Pottie Volunteers Needed
 |
|
| |
Pooooop. RobbiDobbs, Chief Poopervisor (we did not make this up) of the Pottie Project writes:
"Please help make everyone’s excremental experience a positive one each and every time! The city has grown. OH MY it has grown in size, population and VOLUME. I need your help!
What we need to do:
-
Talk to participants about treating the porta-potties with respect and educate about hovering, baby-wipes, gray water and other inappropriate uses of our most precious resource. The marketing catastrophe of 'flushable' wipes is continuing to wreak havoc on the Digestive System of the Man. They don’t go in the hole! Even a watermelon rind can get stuck in the truck’s valve causing a breakdown. If you give away watermelon, then provide the means (at least the education) of proper disposal.
-
I am looking for participants that can monitor the porta-potties on 1 to 4 streets: it can be the porta-pottie bank near your camp, to several streets. Your choice!
The Pottie Friend program is an easy way to participate if you live in line of site to a porta potty bank. You simply 'host' TP at your camp, and distribute some to those banks at dusk. I will supply you with TP.
We, the participants of Black Rock City, are required to make a serious effort to reduce the amount of garbage in the porta-potties at Burning Man. This is how you can help keep our event going, and make a pleasant ablutory experience for all.
Thank you for your participation,
RobbiDobbs
Chief Poopervisor of the Pottie Project"

The Temple of Descendants - The Burning Man 2014 Temple
The Temple for Burning Man 2014 -- the spiritual center of Black Rock City -- will be the Temple of Descendants, designed and created by Ross Asselstine and The Temple Crew.
This ambitious effort will be made possible through generous donations from the Burning Man community, in the form of thousands of volunteer hours and financial contributions to augment their Burning Man Honorarium Art grant.
Ross and his crew have expressed their wish to keep the design a secret in order to preserve the purity of the experience participants will have when they first see it in Black Rock City. While this is unprecedented for The Temple, we respect Ross's desire to offer that precious experience to the Burning Man community. We hope you agree.
Please visit the Temple website, and donate as generously as you feel compelled. Share the site widely, and help them create this priceless gift for the people of Black Rock City.

The White Donkey Theater - Israeli Traveling Theater
|
 |
| |
As Burning Man is rapidly becoming a global cultural movement (in case you missed it, it is), we'll be offering up more Support a Project opportunities affecting the world outside of Black Rock City. Oh and hey ... here's one now!
"The White Donkey Theater is the first ever Israeli traveling theater.
It is a non-profit theater that can fold down and be transported anywhere we like to perform. If the people can't go to the theater - the theater will come to the people.
I started this project as a collaboration between my two big passions, theater and Burning Man. It is my way of gifting the underprivileged areas of Israel with a free for all theater show. With a cast of 4 actors and a lot of people who volunteer their time and effort to making this dream a reality, we will start to perform at the end of May (including 2 shows at MidBurn - the Israeli regional). But in order for us to actually do it we need your support.
Help spread the spirit of Burning Man to areas way outside of the trash fence and support our project.
For more information about who we are contact us through our website or on Facebook."

The Jewelry of the Playa
LadyBee writes:
"The Jewelry of the Playa: Extraordinary stories and pictures about jewelry and the culture of collecting, making and gifting at Burning Man.
Boston jewelry maker and teacher Karen Christians has teamed up with former Burning Man art curator LadyBee and photographer George Post to create a book about the jewelry gifted at Burning Man.
Playa jewelry, dating back to 1996, includes a wide range of styles, techniques and materials, and represents annual themes, art installations, theme camps, staff departments, events, and the overall culture of Burning Man. The book features 20 years of playa jewelry, its makers and stories.
The book will be self-published, and the team has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help make that happen. Please take a look!"
