"The Temple of Descendants" - The Burning Man 2014 Temple
We are excited to announce that the Temple for Burning Man 2014 will be "The Temple of Descendants", constructed by a crew led by San Anselmo-based artist Ross Asselstine.
Ross has been a part of David Best's Temple crew since 2002, and he brings the same intention to the project, as he looks to craft a sacred, contemplative and inspiring space to serve as the spiritual center of Black Rock City. "The Temple of Descendants" will be a truly spectacular and awe-inspiring structure.
We'll be sharing (a limited number of) sneak peak images, volunteer openings, and participation opportunities (both financial and material) in future editions of the Jackrabbit Speaks. Stay tuned!
And may we be the first to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ross and his crew for this invaluable gift to the Burning Man community!

Remembrance Plaque of Names of Burners Lost: 2013-2014
Sorry ... we botched the email address to submit your plaque names the last time we posted this, and we decided to do it right this time.
"Each year since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition honors those who have participated in creating Burning Man and affected our Burning experiences. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year's Remembrance Plaque.
Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address.
(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.)
Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year's plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year's plaque.
Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Man Base, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.)
May their spirits move on to the eternal playa! "

Why I Am a Burner
PJ Evans writes about why he's a Burner ... here's an excerpt:
"'Wow dude... You're one of those people? I'm ashamed.' I sit at home reading that sentence in my email. Each time hoping the sentence will turn into a paragraph that gives their perspective some context. But no, it's just that one sentence. I wanted to respond back directly, but it didn't feel like it was the right thing to do. So I let the universe guide me, and ended up just letting it go. I hit delete and erased the message, obliterating it into the cosmos."

Where I Healed
Our Tales From the Playa keep streaming in ... here's a snippet from a Tale from Naomi Jedeikin Starr:
"There was pain everywhere. Pain and grief and sadness, with a chord of hope and love tying it all together. The emotion was palpable, inescapable.
It was heavy but uplifting at the same time.
I just stood there and let the fullness of it wash through me. Then I slowly made my way through the temple, walking in the outermost layer, breathing in the collective yearning that people brought there, the anguish and the hope."

"Life Cube" Burns in Las Vegas!
A Life Cube has been built and burnt in Black Rock City for a couple years now. Skeeter, the artist behind it, has now taken it to the real world -- well, as real as you'd consider Las Vegas ... it's pretty weird in Vegas. :-)
Here's the story (including videos of things burning, naturally!).

The Morris Hotel Brings New Life to Fourth Street in Reno
We've told you about the (really cool) Morris Hotel before -- but to refresh your memory, it's a hotel in downtown Reno, built and run upon the foundation of Burning Man's 10 Principles. Jungle Jim, its proprietor, is a burning rock star.
The Reno Gazette-Journal has put together this nifty video profiling the Morris Hotel, and the impact it's had.

Martial Artists, Acrobats and Monks: Join The Black Rock Kwoon and Dojo
 |
|
| |
This actually made us snort our drink out our nose. And we totally borrowed that awesome image from here. But you have to admit, it was necessary. Kannik writes:
"Our white roofed shrine returns for its fourth year. Within, we are students of motion Martial arts, qi gong, meditation, and other pursuits. Master and novice alike practice cultivation of both mind and body. We are serenity. We are intensity. And when our minds are clear and we are as one with the Zen of the universe itself... the sacred gong rings out and we spring into motion, battle standards flying, delivering fresh baked goods to various points around the city!
Do you have a passion for martial arts and acrobatics? Do you seek a shrine in which to practice your meditation? The Black Rock Kwoon and Dojo is looking for you! There are many opportunities to be part of our temple:
* Teaching martial arts and similar classes
* Leading meditation sessions
* Delivering baked goods with flair and panache!
* Contribute martial arts gear, benches, and temple accoutrements
* Oversee/manage the temple
* Camp with us and join fellow martial and meditation artists!
If you’d like to participate, please sign up here. Our Facebook page is information central. And you may email me directly for more info: kannikcat@gmail.com.
And when you are on the playa, stop by our temple to train and learn!"

What Would You Say to the Virgin Burner You Once Were?
We've said it before, we'll say it again. We love this project (and for the record, we'd tell ourselves not to be such a wussy). Awkwürd writes:
"What would you say to the Virgin Burner you once were? Write a letter! We are ready to receive your letters for the 2014 Burn. These letters are collected online and at regional Burning Man events and distributed on playa to the current year's virgins. Over the past two years we have collected and distributed nearly 1,000 letters.
The Burn is still months away, but the VLP is collecting your letters.

Jobs For Burners: Career and Job Forum
Well now, this is fascinating as it is enterprising ... and pretty brilliant. We love seeing this kind of thing coming out of the fevered brains in our do-ocratic community. Check it out. Wabi Sabi writes:
"The Burning Man community over the years has come together to create amazing art, experiences, parties and festivals. We've made friends and tested ourselves in ways non-Burners would never understand. But we understand one another and because of that, we should take it one step further and help support each other in our jobs and careers. You would be surprised (or not) at the opportunities that pass through some of our hands. Jobs and careers are what sustain us and allow us to go Home every year and continue building our communities.
This is why Jobs for Burners was created on Facebook. The group was originally intended for job listings and introductions. We then made Jobs for Burners: Career and Job Forum for career discussions. Recently, we decided to take it a step further and make the connections even more professional and we created JfB Networking on LinkedIn. I hope everyone checks it out and finds their next dream job!"

Call for Artists to Display Work with the LA Metro
Athena, one of our Los Angeles Regional Representatives, asked that we pass this opportunity on to our community:
"Here is a golden opportunity for EVERY artist in our community to get a commission from LA Metro. They are building new stations like crazy and need lots of artists to decorate them with their art. They are putting together a pool of 300 artists and the deadline to submit for the pool is APRIL 7th.
This is open to artists of all amateur and professional levels. Many of the people who have received Metro commissions thus far were first timers. Some never even had a gallery show. But all have gone on to do additional public works.
Here is the really cool part...you get to keep your originals. Metro is commissioning ($$) you for the image which they will pay to have printed either on Enameled Steel, Powered Aluminum, Glass, Laser Cut Steel, or Ceramic Tile. Metro will also cover the cost of installation. All you need to do is come up with the image. They are looking for 2D and 3D artists of all genres. Painters, print makers, graphic designers, stencils, photographers, collage, assemblage, etc. Metro will provide someone to shoot or scan your image and then they transfer it in a durable format and take care of the rest. You remain the owner of the original.
***VERY IMPORTANT: this is not proposals for work to be put in the stations, just information about you as an artist and what your art work looks like (your talent). ***
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION INTO THE POOL IS APRIL 7TH 5PM
What you need to do:
-
Go here, and click on Artists Opportunities/Events
-
Download and read the Call to Artists and Questions and Answers Regarding the Call
-
To Submit after you read both documents Go here and Sign Up to get started.
-
Follow the directions there and in the Call to Artists document.
-
You will need an Artist Statement, professional resume, ten images of your work (work you have done, not work you are proposing to do - showcase your talent), descriptions of each image, and professional references. You can check both 2D and 3D if you want to be considered for both.
This is the pool they will draw from for the next 3 years for ALL LA Metro art opportunities. This is a nationwide search so please share it with your artist friends in different cities. Must be in US.
If you have questions, you may contact me and I'll try to answer them athena@laburningman.com or you can contact artistopportunities@metro.net
***There are no freestanding sculpture opportunities at this time***"

Embrace: The Latest Project from The Pier Group
The Pier Group, who brought you (coincidentally enough) The Pier and The Pier 2 art installations, are working on "Embrace" for Burning Man 2014 -- yet another ambitious project from this incredible crew. They could use your help making it happen. They write:
"The Pier Group has just launched their Kickstarter for Embrace! If you haven't heard Embrace is a 70ft tall sculpture depicting 2 tree people in an embrace. Inside is a 5 story towering cathedral space with 2 massive hearts constructed by crews in Vancouver and Portland. Embrace is a dedication to the now, a testament to all of the relationships we share with those in our lives."

Help Build a New Pavilion for NV88, Black Rock City's Airport
Agent Nation of the Black Rock Travel Agency theme camp writes:
"Many citizens of BRC may still be unaware that there is a second 'port of entry' to the event, and that it's possible to arrive at Burning Man by air. With the new focus on reducing traffic on Highway 447, the Black Rock City Municipal Airport is preparing for increased air traffic in the coming years. Burning Man continues to support our Burner-Aviator community with facilities and all the basic Airport safety and infrastructure.
So . . . we got the cake, here comes some awesome icing:
Established in 1999, the Black Rock Travel Agency is an independent and autonomous theme camp, and playa home for many Airport volunteers.
"We are building a new pavilion for art and social interaction at the Airport site in 2014, and we need your help. Here is our Indiegogo site for more information on this great project."
