Oh hi! The JRSes are getting thicker, huh?
The Main Ticket Sale has happened. It went off without a hitch from a technical standpoint, but we know that doesn’t mean it felt good for those who didn’t land tickets. We hear you, and we’ve been there. There are still many ways to go to Burning Man! Don’t give up now! We have some suggestions below.
This weekend is the 11th Burning Man Global Leadership Conference! Our introduction to this year’s conference theme is in here, and there’s also — for the first time! — stuff open to the general public, which you’ll find under Events & Happenings.
All that and much more, including info on stickers, Center Camp Café decorations, musical opportunities and all that good ol’ playa stuff. Get on in there!

GLC 2017: Politics, Picket Lines and the Ten Principles

“Burning Man’s 11th Global Leadership Conference begins in Oakland on Thursday, with over 630 Regional Contacts and community leaders converging from around the globe to swap skills, shoot the shit, and share the successes and challenges of their events, projects and communities.
Knowledge exchange is the name of the game at this annual conference. But at this year’s gig, participants will also dig a little deeper into their cultural DNA and explore the juicy realm of politics, picket lines and the role Burners play in times of social upheaval.”

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Main Sale Day
Everything went smoothly in the Main Sale, but we know it’s still disappointing for many people. Nimbus writes:
“Main Sale day is always a bittersweet day for us. Even if everything goes perfectly, it still results in many disappointed Burners not yet having secured a ticket to BRC. Please know that we see the hurt and frustration out there.
At the end of the day, a lot of dyed-in-the-wool Burners will be caught for a while longer in that uncomfortable liminal space between their playa-intentions and default-world logistics. For those folks we ask for everyone to be as kind and understanding as possible. Know a friend with an extra, or whose plans have changed? Reach out.”

#PlayaMade: Creating a Community That Goes Deeper Than Economics

“There’s a secondary theme we’d like you to consider this year (and come to think of it every year ever after). It’s called ‘Playa Made’ — or #PlayaMade in social media parlance — and it’s a simple idea with mighty consequences. It means don’t buy new stuff just because you can and because it’s easy. It is bad for the earth, degrades our culture, and it’s just plain boring.
‘Playa Made’ means putting your wallet away and looking at what’s already around you. It means getting creative, crafty, and resourceful. It’s realizing that, together, we are creating experiences that can’t be bought, and the experience of Burning Man is all of it, from the outsized majesty of the art right down to the tiniest dangly earring gifted by a new friend.”

What, You Think Stickers Just Grow on Trees?
Zac Cirivello writes:
“Now is the time to start getting crafty on images for the 2017 event. Each year, about a hundred designs are submitted and the staff and volunteers at Burning Man headquarters select about a dozen to print for the year.
One sticker design out of those submitted is selected each year as the ‘not really official’ sticker of the year and given to every Burner at the Greeter Station as they arrive. A handful of the other designs will also be turned into sticker schwag sprinkled throughout BRC randomly (Immediacy! Gifting!) and shared with Burners all year round. Help us remember our wonderful home in the desert even when we’re away!”

“Burning Man Art” Is Now Everywhere – but What Is It?
Caveat Magister writes:
“The best way — maybe the only authentic way — to appreciate the art of Burning Man is to be surrounded by it at 3 in the morning after a dust storm and wonder “what in God’s name is that thing over there?”
But if we were to be docents of Burning Man art for people who are not at Burning Man and have never been, what would we say? How do we explain the art of Burning Man to people looking at pictures of it? We can recommend books, sure, but let’s say we just have a conversation. What should we talk about?”

Remembrance Plaque of Burners Lost 2016–2017

“Each year since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition honors those who have participated in creating Burning Man and affected our Burning experiences.
This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year's Remembrance Plaque.
Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, using this form. (Please DO NOT hit reply to this newsletter to submit a name.)
Submissions must be received by July 20 to be included on this year's plaque. Submissions after July 20 will be added to next year's plaque.
Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Man Base, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.)
May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!”

“Cranes, actually. Origami cranes to be even more precise.
We are working on a decor element that involves lots and lots of traditional origami cranes. Have you heard of ‘1000 Cranes’? No? Well, the ritual of folding 1000 cranes carries different meanings for different people (Google it), but the significance of hope and healing is the one we love the most, especially in these trying times of ours.
We need your help! We are looking for as many colorful origami cranes as we can get. That is where you come in.
Using paper that is no smaller than 6" x 6" and no larger than 12" x 12" fold as many cranes as you can and send them to us! They can be solid in color or patterned as long as they are colorful! Here’s a link to the easiest instructions we found.

Burning Progeny EuroBurner Survey 2017: Last Call
G Man writes:
“Burning Progeny is a cultural research project that commenced in 2016 and will continue until end of year 2018. Inspired by the global efflorescence of Burning Man, the project is focused on the movement’s growth in Europe where it has taken root in such far-flung locations as Sweden, Spain and Israel. As a multi-sited study of the adaptation of the ethos and principles of Burning Man in Europe, the project is conducted by a team of social scientists at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
The Burning Progeny team conducted a preliminary survey in 2014, and in 2017 we are conducting a second EuroBurner survey. If you are a European Burner and or have participated in Burning Man events in Europe (and even if you did complete our earlier survey), please answer this short survey designed to collect anonymous socio-demographic and qualitative data useful for the purposes of our study and to our collaborators at the Black Rock City Census.
As a component of a larger ethnographic project on Burning Man culture in Europe, the results of these surveys will greatly assist formulations to be published in a book after the conclusion of the research.

“This June, I3 Arts Fest will be transforming three spaces in downtown, Los Angeles into something quite spectacular. June 2 and 3 will see the night transformed by artists into something quite spectacular, turning these urban canvases into performing arts experiences, large-scale interactive installations and breakthrough multimedia that will open eyes and minds.
Highlights of the weekend include:

Grand Performances will present William Close and the Earth Harp Collective creating the country's tallest musical instrument out of an 800 foot tall skyscraper
