ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Good March to you. It must be March already, because we’ve just announced the 2017 Black Rock City Honoraria Installations!
Here’s a little cross-section of this year’s awarded artists: There’s a professor of sexology, a 12-year-old LARPer, a citizen collective from an Urban Freetown in Denmark, as well as scientists, architects, teachers, puppeteers, inventors, engineers… and also full-time artists, fabricators and creators of various kinds, of course.
As per usual, one of those recipients is this year’s Temple, about which you will find more details below. It will be built by a team led by Steven Brummond, Marisha Farnsworth and Mark Sinclair, all of whom have worked with Temple originator David Best.
Yes, there is actually a Temple, also, too — separate from the Temple of the Golden Spike, which is the Man Base, not the Temple, in case anyone was confused about how Burning Man works.
Beyond that, it’s a light issue for your warming weather. Did you know Midburn tickets are still available? Yes, they are. And after that…
The Man burns in 171 days.

Introducing the 2017 Black Rock City Honoraria
It’s time to really kick off the 2017 Burning Man season. Behold! Here are this year’s art installations selected for Black Rock City Honoraria Grants.
Applicants really embraced this year’s Radical Ritual theme. We’ll find many opportunities for ceremony and ritual, honoring and elevating in shrines, altars, temples, icons, cathedrals — even tombs. Of course, this being Burning Man, it’s a playful mix of the sacred and the profane.

The Temple
Among those honorarium recipients is the 18th incarnation of the Temple — once again called simply “The Temple” — which will be designed this year by Steven Brummond, Marisha Farnsworth and Mark Sinclair. They were leads on David Best’s temples; two are architects and one is a structural engineer.
It will be an impressive 80 feet tall and 120 feet across. They’re milling the lumber themselves, and most of the build will be at a sawmill in Sonora, CA.

We’ve Lost Tom
It’s with an extremely heavy heart that we announce the passing of a longtime member of the Burning Man family, Tom “Lost Tom” LaPorte.
This remembrance, much like everything he did, is a collaboration among friends and acquaintances who came to know Tom through his work in Chicago art community, with Burners Without Borders, BMIR, Media Mecca and the Regional Network.

Radical Ritual Blog Series
The blog series for the 2017 theme, Radical Ritual continues. Enjoy the latest two posts, one from everyone’s favorite bawdy playa storyteller Tony “Coyote” Perez-Banuet, and one from Shawn Saleme that′s a slow and moving first-person account of one of the most mysterious deep playa rituals.
Stay tuned for much more on the Radical Ritual page of the Burning Man Journal.

The Bigness of Burning Man
Skweex writes:
“This year, I attempted to capture the expansiveness of being on the playa. Too often in prior years, my photos either focused on the person/art to the exclusion of context, or captured so much space as to lose all sense of focus. This year, my primary goal was to recreate the often overwhelming and lost and at times lonely as hell feelings you can get while out there.”

The Psychology of Burning Man
Daniel Yudkin writes:
“Scientists at Oxford University and UCLA are studying the psychology of Burning Man. They need your help! This short questionnaire will give them insight into why people go to Burning Man and how it changes them. They especially want to hear from you if you went to Burning Man last year. Thanks!”

The Cosmic Space Worm
Guyler writes:
“The creators of Mechan 9, the fallen metal robot, and TrEeD, the illuminated bike rack tree (as well as a few other projects,) are trying to raise some funds for a space to build their newest Honorarium project: The Cosmic Space Worm! It is pedal-powered, segmented, aluminum worm built upon five adult tricycles. It's going to be awesome but they need a a dry, flat space to build it. They have a line on a perfect spot and are just trying to come up with the funds. Every little bit helps. And please help spread the word to the art-loving world! Thank you!”
