The Burnal Equinox approacheth! Yes, things are starting to pop off around here. This is a crazy-packed JRS, and we’re not even sorry. The Burning Man informational smörgåsbord is already starting to fill up.
You see what we did there? That right there was a Sweden reference in honor of Burning Man Week Stockholm and the European Leadership Summit about to kick off up there in smörgåsbord central. More on that below.
Meanwhile, it really is Burning Man season already. The Low Income Ticket Program is now open, BRC Emergency Services needs Crisis Intervention volunteers, and so forth. Now’s also a pretty good time to remind you of a couple things: For the kitchen sink of BRC coordinating and social networking, visit the ePlaya message board. If you’re looking for particular kinds of collaborators for your projects, have a look at the Spark listings.

2017 Low Income Ticket Program OPEN!

“The Low Income Ticket Program has been helping to ensure Black Rock City is a vibrant and diverse metropolis for over a decade — each year the Ticketing Team reviews thousands of applications in order to award reduced-priced tickets to those in need. There are 4,000 $190 tickets offered through this program.
If you are thinking of applying for a Low Income Ticket, now is the time! The application is available through the Low Income Ticket Program page as well as in your Burner Profile. Tip: Get your financial documents in order before you apply.
Applications are reviewed in the order they are received. The application will close Monday, April 17 or as soon as we have enough applicants, whichever comes first.
New this year: We’ve expanded your ability to manage your application yourself through your Burner Profile. In addition to being able to view your application status, you can now also cancel your application.

Stockholm’s Heating Up in March With Burning Man Week and European Leadership Summit

“At the beginning of March, Burning Man Regional Contacts, community leaders, and Regional Event leads from across the world will gather with Burning Man staff in Stockholm, Sweden, for the fourth annual Burning Man European Leadership Summit.
The Summit is hosted by Burning Man’s Regional Network Team, in collaboration with the Nordic Burner community, and is intended to serve as a platform for peer-to-peer sharing for leaders from a broad geographical and cultural spectrum. Past European Leadership Summits were hosted in Berlin (2014), Amsterdam (2015), and Barcelona (2016), and the leadership event has been growing in size and popularity over the years. This year, Burning Man expects over 200 participants in the Summit, representing more than 24 countries.”

Spaces and Values: Thoughts from Sustainable Creative Communities

What you are about to read might be called a “white paper” if your typical nonprofit published it. There’s nothing typical about this, though. A group convened at the Burning Man Symposium at Esalen in October 2016 writes:
“It’s time to think big about socially conscious real estate development. Our creative culture has grown to a point where we are now a broad constellation of organizations, entities, and movements that share similar values. At the same time, our values (broadly based on participation and inclusion) have been tested by recent events, including the 2016 election and Ghost Ship fire in Oakland and its aftermath. It is a time when we need to work together to better articulate our values, develop plans for how to advance the causes we care about, and reach out to and communicate with those who may not understand or be aligned with our movement of movements.”

Playa Made: Jewelry of Burning Man at the Fuller Craft Museum

“For several years at Burning Man, I took jewelry workshops at Oasis 47, where Karen Christians showed us how to add colored resins to a cast bronze theme pendant designed by Sumner Silverman. When Karen became aware of my playa jewelry collection, dating back to 1995, she suggested that we create a book, with George Post as our photographer, and in 2015, The Jewelry of Burning Man was published.
After seeing our book, Beth McLaughlin, the curator at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts, felt it would be a terrific exhibition that would present a highly creative and personal genre of making at Burning Man — something that was bound to appeal not only to Burners but also to those who might be intrigued by the event and all that it entails.”

Once I’d secured a meet-n-greet with the Temple wizard himself, Mr. David Best, I needed to get my silly head on straight in a jiffy. As tantalizing as it was to catch that Sesame Street Live w/ Kanye celebrity jam out at the trash fence, I wisely elected to stay in for the night with a sixer of Yoo-hoo’s. You know, figured I should prolly whirl together a list of hard-hitting questions instead. To avoid being pulled away by any other filthy temptations, I chained myself to the inside of my tent with a pair of sex cuffs this one peckerwood ‘gifted’ me. (I’m actually still wearing them as we speak. Kinda makes me look like a superhero!)”

ESD’s Crisis Intervention Team Seeks Qualified Volunteers

The Crisis Intervention Team of Burning Man’s Emergency Services Department is recruiting qualified volunteers. We are currently in the prescreening process to determine how many new people we need.
Our team accepts volunteers with either a specialty in mental health or sexual assault and domestic violence. We employ two primary volunteer teams: CIT, and a Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence (SAT) Team, and two sub-specialty teams: A Legal 2000 (L2000) Team, and the Child Respite Center (CRC) Team. If you or someone you know are interested in exploring this opportunity, please create or update your Burner Profile volunteer application to reflect your interest and details or email the CIT Volunteer Coordinator. We will conduct two phone interviews with eligible candidates and share additional intake processes while we review applications.

EuroBurners: The Anthropologists Are Calling You

“Burning Progeny is a cultural research project that commenced in 2016 and will continue through 2018. Inspired by the global efflorescence of Burning Man, the project is focused on the movement’s growth in Europe, where it has taken root in such far-flung locations as Sweden, Spain and Israel. The project is conducted by a team of social scientists at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
The Burning Progeny team conducted a preliminary survey in 2014, and in 2017 we are conducting a second EuroBurner survey. If you are a European Burner and/or have participated in Burning Man events in Europe (and even if you did complete our first survey), please answer this short survey designed to collect anonymous socio-demographic and qualitative data useful for the purposes of our study and to our collaborators at the Black Rock Census.
The results of these surveys will greatly assist formulations to be published in a book after the conclusion of the research.

Fundamentals of Flight: Nest 2017 Takes Off — Cornwall, UK — May 23–29

Join the UK’s burn community at Nest 2017. Moving to our new home in Cornwall, plans are already afoot for wondrous happenings in the woodlands.
The theme this year is Fundamentals of Flight — Nest is where the dragon rests. A mythical, dangerous, passionate and playful creature, that once a year comes home to roost, and to lay out foundations for the rest of the year. In 2017 Nest is coming out of its shell and learning to fly as a standalone, fully self-reliant being. Although we are building from the ground up, our community is what carries forward the momentum of previous years.
Nest takes place between Tuesday 23rd May and Monday 29th May. Project grants are open, and we’d love to hear more from the community on how the event can grow and fill our beautiful new site with creative energies and connections.”
