ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Happy February. Here’s a JRS valentine with a big Robot Heart at the top.
Let’s take this opportunity to welcome Ping Fu and Dennis Bartels to the Burning Man Project! Check out the announcement below to see how lucky we are to have their guidance.
We’re at the 200-day mark, so that means the Burnal Equinox is coming up. You’ll find several exciting events near that auspicious midpoint below, not the least of which is AfrikaBurn, which still has tickets left for now.
In the meantime, those of us who already can’t stop thinking about the big Burn have plenty to do. Below you’ll find the introduction to the Radical Ritual blog series, which’ll get your mind right, and a call-out for proposals for shrines to adorn the Man Base and BRC’s public plazas. Plus, there are already some down-and-dirty ways to participate and art projects to support.
Now might be a good time to check out the Tickets website to see what deadlines are approaching. Stay sharp. It’s sneakin’ up on ya.
The Man burns in 200 days.

2017 Man Pavillion Shrines and Processionals: Request for Proposals
Burning Man seeks Regional groups or artist collectives to propose, create and install one of 20 shrines for the 2017 Man Pavilion or one of several City Plazas in Black Rock City. Shrines installed at the Man Pavilion, this year called the Temple of the Golden Spike, will burn with the Man and should be constructed with that in mind.
Shrines installed in City Plazas will not burn and can be made from a broader range of materials and will be collected by the artists at the end of the event. As the artist, you may choose to propose one or the other, or both!

Burning Man’s Relationship to Politics in a Time of Activism
Caveat Magister writes:
“Let’s not kid ourselves. You love Burning Man, but lately you’ve been asking yourself: “Is this important?”
“In a world that’s being destroyed by (INSERT WHOEVER THOSE PEOPLE ARE), does any of this really matter?”
And if it does – here’s where it gets really tricky – what exactly does it do that makes it relevant? After all, it’s still inviting (INSERT THOSE PEOPLE), and not demanding that they be educated about (INSERT THE THING THAT THOSE PEOPLE NEED TO STOP AND/OR START DOING). It’s not even shaming them! So how can it matter?”

The Darkest Town in America
Awesome portrait of Gerlach, including encounters with some residents you might recognize. Oliver Roader writes:
“Here in the desert, the Earth boils and stars fill the sky. By day, you can see plumes of geothermal steam rising in every direction, pouring from vents in the ground and disappearing into the crisp, dry air. At night, you can see distant galaxies with the naked eye, their light much older than our species.”

We borked the link on this one last time, so we’re running it again. ShutterPants writes, and he’s not kidding:
“Just finished a video of the 2016 highlights, done in a trippy form... enjoy!”

AfrikaBurn Tickets Still Available — Tankwa, South Africa — Apr 24 – 30
Where: Tankwa, South Africa
When: April 24 – 30
Yeah, you know, the second-biggest Burn in the world? That one. Hedmekanik writes:
“There’s an event that happens in a remote desert, where Mutant Vehicles prowl and huge artworks dot the undulating landscape. Where a wild world of theme camps lie in wait, and where they always burn the Man. But wait — It's not the Gerlach Regional we're talking about. Oh, no: we're talking AfrikaBurn here.
If you’d ever had an inkling to check out the largest Regional outside of the USA, here’s your chance. Tickets to the event (which is at the end of April) are available, but if you plan to be there, hop to it: They’re going fast.”
