FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Dear, dear people. Your Jackrabbit feels like holding people close these days. This issue is such a mix of ecstatic and painful information. It's just kinda… like that out there right now.

Good news first: Burning Man 2017 has a theme: Radical Ritual. The Man is inside! Get a load of that below. And right in keeping with the art theme announcement, the BRC Honoraria Grant cycle is now open. Plus, we have more opportunties for artists, as well as inspiring stories from Black Rock and Standing Rock alike.

Okay, now for the hard part. Last weekend, disaster struck in Oakland, right in the heart of our community. At a large musical gathering, a fire broke out, and many lives were lost. In this issue you'll find a message from Burning Man to our community affected by this tragedy, as well as some ways to come together, give and get support.

We love you.

The Man burns in 270 days.

Burning Man 2017: Radical Ritual

Beyond the dogmas, creeds, and metaphysical ideas of religion, there is immediate experience. It is from this primal world that living faith arises. In 2017, we will invite participants to create interactive rites, ritual processions, elaborate images, shrines, icons, temples, and visions.

Our theme will occupy the ambiguous ground that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime. The human urge to make events, objects, actions, and personalities sacred is protean. It can fix on and inhabit anyone or anything. This year our art theme will release this spirit in the Black Rock Desert.

To the Burning Man Community Regarding the Oakland Fire

As we’re all too painfully aware by now, a devastating fire broke out at a gathering in Oakland, California on Friday night. As of this morning (December 5), the death toll was 36, with a portion of the building’s remnants still left to search.

Many in the Burning Man community have been deeply affected by this tragic event, and many more across our global network have reached out to ask how we’re doing. In our tight-knit community of creatives, each of us has been touched if not directly, through friends of friends. The degrees of separation are minimal and the collective sense that “it could have been any of us” is as real as it is heartbreaking. We’re deeply saddened by this loss and we’re holding the victims and their friends and families close to our hearts.

True to the Burning Man spirit, we’re also asking ourselves what we can do, how we can help.

From Black Rock to Standing Rock

Christopher Breedlove writes:

“It’s hard to get a sense of what’s truly happening at Standing Rock. Between the myriad voices from the field, misinformation from the opposition, and the near absence of major media outlets, it takes a lot of work to get the real story.

I just came back from a mission to Standing Rock with a crew of Burning Man participants and staff, some of whom are still on the ground. Here’s what we saw, what we did, and what we learned.”

Not Even a Wheelchair Could Stop Seth Mohler From Going Home

Mia Quagliarello writes:

“Having been to Burning Man twice before the accident, Mohler was determined to put new meaning into the idea of Radical Self-reliance. A builder and a fixer with a background in TV production, he always felt his gift to the playa was helping people, from helping with RV problems to securing shade structures. In 2015, he led his camp, Tortwava, remotely, helping them prepare to have a spectacular Burn. (At the last minute, he realized he wasn’t physically ready to join them, much to his wife’s relief.)

But in 2016, it was time to go home.”

The Playa Provides: A Journey of Starting Over at Burning Man

Maria Gotay writes:

“The temptation to lose myself to the desert nights, to become a dot in the LED glitterscape, was strong. But this wasn’t my first rave, and I was here for so much more than just the party. I was on the mend and I was on my own for the first time. I was here to reclaim my life on my terms. I just happened to be doing it one of the world’s most legendary gatherings. I had a lot to learn.”

SXSW Is Commissioning Art Installations This Year

Burning Man has long had a presence at South by Southwest in Austin, and this year they’re commissioning original artworks! How cool is that? They write:

“Visual artists have always played a role at SXSW through the filmmakers, musicians, and technologists coming to Austin each spring. In 2017, we are expanding our art initiative to deliver an experience of unexpected discovery and inspiration, bringing together diverse people, mediums, and topics.

The SXSW Art Program will showcase international artists, support local talent, and contribute to a vibrant culture of art in Austin through permanent and temporary installations. We seek to work with established artists and emerging talent, and welcome your art installation proposals.”
