GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

It has been one heck of a month on Earth, at least on the continent where Burning Man happens. It's a time of tension, division and uncertainty. In times like these, Burners can prove that we're strong, that our values are uplifting and empowering, that we are everywhere, and that we aren't going anywhere.

In the immediate aftermath of Election Day in the U.S., Burners gathered on the National Mall in Washington D.C. and did what Burners do: danced, mourned, rejoiced, and burned some art. It was the second annual Catharsis on the Mall, and it coincided with the first-ever Mid-Atlantic Leadership Conference, at which Burning Man community stakeholders pondered the hard work ahead of all of us. We can be proud of the leadership Burners are showing in these times.

And in more general news, Burning Man Project has released its 2015 Annual Report and financial information. We're also hiring a Communications Manager, someone to set the tempo of our message and point the Burning Man megaphone around the world... Is it you?

Keep up the good work, y'all.

The Man burns in 285 days.

Regional Leaders Gather in D.C. Days After the Election for First Mid-Atlantic Leadership Conference

JR "Nexus" Russ writes:

“The first ever Mid-Atlantic Leadership Conference, which brought together community leaders from across the region, was months in the making. Timed to coincide with the second annual Catharsis on the Mall, we hadn’t taken into account how the outcome of our country’s presidential election might affect our gathering. I say this because, to be candid, everyone was already drained and raw before the first day even started. But start it did, and so did the conversations, and the work.”

Over 300 Organizations Join Forces in a Nation of Makers

Nation of Makers is a new U.S. nonprofit formed to “serve and represent a wide variety of spaces, events, and institutions serving makers.” With coordination and support from an organization like this, far-flung makers and maker spaces can hopefully come together to revitalize this country’s economy and culture.

Doesn’t that sound like something we could use more of right now?

Catharsis 2016: Burning and Healing on the National Mall

Burners have been busy in D.C. lately. Couldn't be more timely, either. Vladimir Herrera (The Prophet) writes:

“The event began on Veteran’s Day at 11:11 am, November 11 — three days after Election Day — and ended on Sunday, November 13. This year’s theme, ‘Our Journey Home’, was inspired by the healing journey embarked upon by all who have been torn away from their safety and security by trauma. Set amongst the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial and the White House, it was just the perfect place to showcase what those 10 Principles of Burning Man can do anywhere they are applied.”

A Story About Fear

Caveat brings us a short story that might bring some light in dark times:

“A young woman who had moved to the city and learned the art of sculpting from the last legendary survivors of a once boisterous scene now shivered in her garret each night in fear.

For upon the death of the High King a great wave of iconoclasm had swept the kingdom, and young men with hammers crashed through the doors of museums, destroying any art that looked human. They tossed acid on painted portraits, and threw busts out windows. For it was a sin, they said, and a presumption, for art to imitate men.”
