ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Hey everybody, we've got a couple big announcements for you in this edition of ye olde JRS. First off, the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) opens Wednesday at 12 noon PST, so register and get in the queue to have a chance at purchasing a ticket that somebody else is looking to offload.
Second, we're super psyched to announce this year's Temple selection — it truly is a stunning and unique design, and we can't wait to see it in Black Rock City. Learn more below, including how you can get involved.
Speaking of temples, David Best's temple in Londonderry Northern Ireland is now being constructed, and will burn on March 21. Pretty cool.
The Man burns in 177 days!

Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) Opens
If you didn't get a ticket in the Individual Sale, you may want to register for the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) via your Burner Profile, starting at 12pm noon PDT today.
If you have tickets you need to sell to other eager participants, you can submit them NOW (together with unwanted Vehicle Passes) in STEP, also through your Burner Profile.
STEP is an online system that facilitates the safe resale of face-value tickets that have been purchased directly from Burning Man. It’s designed to provide a hassle-free, secure way of buying and selling tickets while avoiding scammers, counterfeits and scalpers.

Burning Man 2015 Temple: The Temple of Promise
We are very excited to announce the selected temple design for Burning Man 2015. The Temple of Promise will "provide solemn spaces for individual contemplation as well as the capacity to accommodate larger gatherings of both remembrance and celebration."
This stunning, beautifully-designed offering will act as the spiritual touchstone for the citizens of Black Rock City.
We'd like to thank the team who will be working on this ambitious project, as well as the other artists who submitted design proposals for consideration.

Burning Man Represents at SXSW 2015
We’re happy to once again be sending a small contingent from Burning Man HQ to participate in SXSWi this year.
Rosie von Lila has put together a pretty impressive group of panelists to discuss participatory cities on March 14, and Burning Man Founder and CEO Marian Goodell will be on a panel about creating a space for social good on March 15.
We’ve also coordinated a couple Burner meet-ups, one for Austin Burners (but really for anybody who wants to come) on March 14, and another for SXSW badge-holders on March 15. Details below … and if you’re in Austin during SXSW, we hope to see you!

Word Play: The Art of Jeff Schomberg
This video vignette about artist Jeff Schomberg is a fantastic portrayal of an artist whose trajectory of work has been irrefutably changed by Burning Man. Jeff tells us about how Burning Man expanded his concept of public art, and opened up the possibility for his own artistic growth.

Artist Update: Flux Foundation
2009-2010 Black Rock City Honoraria artist Jess Hobbs, from the ever-inventive and productive Flux Foundation, shares with us an update on their latest work, Bloom:
"We are currently in the final-two-weeks-mad-rush of finishing our new installation Bloom! It was commissioned by the Philadelphia Zoo as part of their SECOND NATURE: Our Endangered World Revealed In Recycled Materials exhibition. The sculpture leaves Oakland for Philadelphia on March 16."

Raise Your Hand if You’ve “Graduated” From Burning Man
Caveat Magister puts into writing yet another ephemeral feeling in Burning Man culture that needed pinning down:
"What does it mean to graduate from Burning Man? To be an after burner? Because it’s one thing if it’s something people are forced to do ('I haven’t been able to get a ticket, so I guess I’m an afterburner'), and another if it’s something we choose to do. Here the high school metaphor breaks down: choice is always better."

How Burning Man Changed Me
Wonka writes:
"It has taken me over a year to fully process my first Burning Man experience. It’s fair to say that the experience changed me, in ways I could never have comprehended. For me now, Burning Man is Home."

Burning Man and Wife
Sweet story. Anandi writes:
"On Thursday morning of this year's Burn, my sweetheart proposed to me. It caught me completely by surprise! On Friday night (and again on Saturday morning, because why not?) we were married. I wrote a story about the oddly playa-esque way it all unfolded. So much magic and mystery, we are still in awe of it! Check it out if you're in the mood to read a romantic Burning Man anecdote."

Camp Conduit Hat Photos
Marta writes:
"Hi, everyone! Did you visit Camp Conduit on-Playa in 2014? Did you receive a nifty new hat from us? Did we take a photo of you sporting your lovely new chapeau?
If so, the pictures have been posted to Camp Conduit’s Facebook page (don’t worry, we asked your permission to post them before any photos were taken—we promise). Direct links are below, and you do not need to be a Facebook member to view them.
So please find your photo, tag away, and have fun!"

Send Us Your Stories!
We want to share your stories! Use this form to submit your stories (either fleshed out ones or concept ideas) about Burning Man — whether it’s about an experience in Black Rock City, Burning Man culture in the world, or things that just smell like Burning Man — for consideration by our Communications Team. Your submission may be published on the Burning Man website, the Voices of Burning Man blog, the Jackrabbit Speaks newsletter, and/or our social networking channels (Facebook, Twitter and the ePlaya).
We’re looking for stories that convey awesomeness and inspire people to do, be and create more and better things. If edits are necessary that substantively change the piece, we’ll work with you on the final version before publication. Thank you for participating!

Join The Black Rock Rangers
HoldMeCloser writes:
"Black Rock Rangers are participants who volunteer a portion of their time in service of the safety and well-being of the Burning Man community.
Rangers act as community mediators, facilitators of public safety (with the expectation that everybody has read the back of their ticket, of course!), providers of reliable information, and navigators of the edge of chaos.
If that sounds like fun, please consider volunteering with us! Prospective Black Rock Rangers must be at least 18 years old and must have attended Burning Man a minimum of two times (and at least once within the past ten years).
The deadline to apply to become a Black Rock Ranger is August 1, but Ranger trainings start as early as May, so you can get a taste of the playa before summer even starts! For more information about the Rangers and the application process, please see rangers.burningman.com/becoming-a-ranger. Questions? Email us at rangers@burningman.org."

Creators! Join us at ALPHA 2015 — April 24-26 — Ramblewood, MD
 |
|
| |
Not That Dave writes:
"ALPHA is a weekend camping event for creators. At ALPHA, everyone is expected to bring a project… but a project can be anything at all as long as it’s interactive! Working on an interactive sculpture? Bring it out to share! Got something you’d like to talk about? Run a workshop or meet-up on a specific topic. Working on a new performance and need feedback? You set the framework, and the other participants will fill in. Building something for the big burn and need to do a test build? Do it at ALPHA and let participants try it out!
ALPHA 2015 will be our third annual ALPHA event, held at Camp Ramblewood in Darlington, Maryland, from April 24-26, 2015. The event is produced by FIGMENT, the not-for-profit that creates free arts events in 10+ cities around the world. Full information on ALPHA at figmentproject.org/alpha.
Tell us you're coming on Facebook.
Tickets are on sale now at alpha2015.eventbrite.com. There are cabins and meal plans available.
After you purchase your ticket, you’ll receive an email with the link to register your project. We encourage experimentation! Please submit your project by April 15, 2015, to appear on our map and schedule. Got questions? Email the ALPHA team at alpha@figmentproject.org."
