GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Well, the Individual Sale for tickets to Burning Man 2015 came and went in the blink of an eye last Wednesday. We've got a full recap of how it all went, below. And if you didn't get tickets, don't despair, there are still plenty more opportunities to get them.

In other news, the Burning Man Arts team has been hard at work the last few weeks, reviewing the art grant proposals (220 of them, to be exact), going through the very difficult process of selecting which of these amazing offerings will be awarded honorarium art grants for Burning Man 2015. We'll be announcing the grantees in our next JRS — and won't that be exciting? Yes. Yes it will.

One side benefit of this whole process is that we've now got a bunch of maquettes (that's fancy speak for "scale models") at BMHQ, so the office kinda looks like a mini-playa for 6"-tall people.

Oh! And while we don't like to pat ourselves on the back, screw it, we're gonna pat ourselves on the back, because philanthropy.com did — calling Burning Man Project the unlikely leader in financial transparency. Ha! So there!

Read on to check out all the news fit to print from around the Burnerverse, and remember ...

The Man burns in 192 days. (Which means you have 26 work weekends left, so get your butts in gear!)

Individual Ticket Sale Recap

The Individual Sale for tickets to Burning Man 2015 started on Wednesday February 18 at 12 noon sharp, and it was over before you knew it — tickets sold out in about an hour. 80,000 people had registered for the sale, hoping to snatch up one of 40,000 available tickets, as well as 12,000 Vehicle Passes allocated to this sale.

Of course, with that kind of disparity in supply and demand, the harsh reality is there were going to be a lot of disappointed people when the dust settled.

Learn about how the sale works and how it went, why the Vehicle Passes sold out before the tickets did, and your options for obtaining tickets if you were amongst those who didn't.

Lastly, whether he served you well or not, get the lowdown on the unexpected hero of the sale — The Little Green Man.

Love Stories from Burning Man

Nice one from Reno Gazette-Journal Burning Man reporter, Jenny Kane. They're pretty conventional as far as Burner love stories go, if you ask us, but that doesn't make them any less adorable:

"Love on the playa sometimes can be a mirage. Sometimes it's just a moment, often just lust, and, well, sometimes it's too many swigs of a chosen cocktail.

But sometimes Burners do find true love on the playa, or the playa helps Burner couples reinforce their everlasting partnership. For this Valentine's Day, three couples told us their stories of how the burn brought them closer to their other half."

Burners Without Borders Detroit: Homeless Backpack Project

One of our favorite civic Burner projects ever is starting to get some well-deserved love from press, funders, and new volunteers alike, so we wanted to give it a boost:

"The Burners Without Borders Detroit: Homeless Backpack Project has given away over 1200 backpacks full of water, food, clothes, blankets, and hygiene products to the homeless people of Detroit since it was conceived by Danielle 'Doxie' Kaltz in 2008. Their target for this year is to give between 400 and 500 more. It gets cold in Detroit. These people need lots of supplies to survive. This 100% volunteer organization, nearly 100 people strong, is making a major difference for them, making grantors like the Pollination Project into repeat customers."

European Leadership Summit Rocks Amsterdam

Stuart Mangrum reports back from our second annual gathering of Regional contacts in Europe:

"Over 100 community leaders from twenty-five nations converged on Amsterdam for the second annual Burning Man European Leadership Summit, February 6-8 in Amsterdam’s historic Beurs van Berlage. Burning Man Regional Contacts, Meta-regionals, event organizers, and headquarters staff joined forces for a fast-paced weekend of teaching, learning, and creative collaboration."

Morris Burner Hotel: A Short Documentary about Burners Transforming Reno

The Morris Hotel in Reno is nothing less than the first Burner hotel in the world. It’s more than 80 years old, and for much of that time, it was dark, dingy, and underutilized. But that all changed when Jungle Jim and his community of Burners got their hands on it.

Now the hotel’s 43 rooms are designed and decorated by artists, and the facility provides space for the practice of the many Burnerly Arts, not the least of which is helping the homeless. The Reno Gazette-Journal has posted an 11-minute documentary on the work they’re doing, which we present here for your viewing pleasure.

Breaking Down the Dust

Cool playa science! Alecia Orsini writes:

"Two Burners from Medford Massachusetts, upon studying the chemicals that make up the dusty playa, concluded that they should be able to make glass from the dust. I talked with Steve Tucker and Michael Tamburro to find out how that process worked and what the playa is really made of."

Panel Discussion on Pop-up Urbanism

Stuart Mangrum writes:

"Burning Man recently hosted a panel discussion on innovative uses of urban space, from temporary parklets and community gardens to maker spaces and pop-up art. If you’re interested in activating your own city in radical ways that don’t necessarily rely on city bureaucracy and established processes, there’s a lot to learn from these folks."

Help Fund Temples of Life Documentary in Northern Ireland

David Best, creator of the Temple at Burning Man, and Burning Man Arts partner Artichoke are building a temple in Northern Ireland this year. Free Run Pictures is making a documentary about it called Temples of Life, and they need help funding it. While they're a large part of the way to the goal, they still need about $50,000 in funding.

They haven't set up a crowd-funding campaign, but if anyone receiving this is interested in supporting the film, you can reach director Laurent Le Gall via the Temples of Life Facebook page or by email at legleu@freerunpictures.com.

SoundBox "Farther Out" – SF Symphony's Experimental Music Series

Some playa-inspired audio for your earholes came across our desk ... thought you might like it:

"Where: SoundBox, 300 Franklin Street, San Francisco, CA
When: March 6th & 7th, 2015

San Francisco Symphony's new experimental performance space and music venue, SoundBox, has its fourth program in March. For this program, SoundBox is celebrating the mystical, technological, and psychological visions of outsiders.

Program teaser:

This is the scene that started here, in California, on the edge of genius and madness. Playland, the Summer of Love, the Playa, and farther out.

It’s a strange trip brought to you by the limitless imagination of the 1960s. Featuring deep explorations of ambient music, an eccentric vision of a wind-up arcade, a mind-altering take on the psychedelic, and other surprises from the far reaches of creativity.

Enter the musical funhouse and let your experience guide you. What will you make of it?

Doors (of perception) open at 8."

5th Annual Burner Day at Disneyland

Nick writes to tell us about this event he's doing ... sounds fun!

"The playa isn't the only alternative to the default world. It's six months since the last burn, and only six months until the next. Let's bring a little playa to that most corporate of alternate worlds.

Besides, there's no Space Mountain in Black Rock City.

'Street Legal' playwear encouraged.

Meet in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle at 11:11am for the group photo! Also we will do a second meetup time at 3:00 for those of you who get to the park later."
