To the Flames and Back: A First-Timer's Transformational Story

First-time Burner Christina Cline Schneider wrote this great piece (complete with annotated photos!) about how their first Burning Man changed the lives of she and her husband. [We saw and totally dug the Sammiches mutant vehicle they brought!]. Here's an excerpt:

"Since attending in 2012 our lives have altered, morphed and still continue to transform. We sold the home in suburbia, divorced toxic friends, began a new spiritual journey, attended transformational seminars, joined coaching programs, quit corporate jobs, the list goes on. We began learning to live a life we love through community and contribution."

A Few Ground Rules for Talking About the 10 Principles

Caveat Magister adds some context to the ongoing discussion in the 10 Principles blog series in his post "A Few Ground Rules for Talking About the 10 Principles". Here's how he kicks it off:

"Okay, anyone who read the headline to this post and asked 'Who the f*ck are you to set ground rules for talking about the 10 Principles?' gets a gold star.  The rest of you need to stay after class and clean the erasers."

10 Terrible Secrets Behind the “Burning Man” Festival That Sodomites and Socialists Don’t Want You to Know!

Sorry, but we really couldn't pass this up. And yes, for the irony-challenged, this is satire. Enjoy:

"At the end of every summer, a secret cult gathers in an obscure corner of the Nevada desert. They’re young, they’re old, they’re from nations across the world. They say they’re celebrating artistic creativity and old-fashioned self-reliance. Maybe they’re even planting a seed that could change our culture forever… Yet what really happens behind those 6-foot high gates and armies of security guards?"

Burning Man 2013 Photo Gallery From Ales Prikryl

Every year, we look forward to Ales' Burning Man photos. And once again, he has completely, utterly, resoundingly failed to disappoint. He writes:

"This is the short photo essay opening the window to the last year of dusty memories. Just like my last 14 years, this year was the best and will remain this way. Enjoy."

My First Burn Changed My Life

It's always cool to see BRC through the eyes of a first-timer -- especially a photographer. There's just something special about their shots. Gaz writes:

"Hey guys, sorry really late on editing my shots! But bringing back so many amazing memories! Thank you for the time of my life … we plan to try and go again this year … this was my first burn and we are from Australia. See you on the playa! Gaz."

Here's his gallery. (Some of the shots are NSFW.)

Slackline Oasis Brings Volcano Highline to Burning Man

The upshot of the guy in the orange tutu slacklining is reason enough to watch this video. Ray writes:

"For 3 years, Ray Marceau has been building slacklines on the Playa.  This year, the Volcano Highline was born."

[Editor's Note: This Rabbit drove into BRC at the same time as these guys this year, and got to watch them enthusiastically share portable slacklines with folks in the Gate line. (We declined to participate, citing potential for a broken ankle.)]

Burning Progeny: The European Efflorescence of Burning Man

Euroburners! Check this out! Graham writes:

"Burning Progeny is a research project exploring the culture of Burning Man in Europe, focusing on European satellites of the world’s largest temporary city. If you’re a Euroburner, and have been a participant in Burning Man Regional Events in Europe, we invite you to participate in this electronic survey, which is designed to assist understanding of the shape and direction of the Burning Man movement (and its Ten Principles) in Europe.

Burning Progeny is inspired by the way Burning Man is flourishing around the world, with Europe being the region of strongest growth outside North America. Designed by Burner researchers (Graham St John and François Gauthier) at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, the survey has been developed in collusion with the Black Rock City Census team.

The survey will close on Feb 28. Complete the survey (your participation is appreciated!).

Please direct all inquiries to Graham St John: g.stjohn@warpmail.net"

Clutch Village - The Earth is Your Majority Shareholder

Sunflower writes:

"Sustainability and entrepreneurship are seeds of change which are best when paired, like aged wine and good food. Clutch Village aims to facilitate this pairing. Over the course of the past few centuries, human beings have become increasingly disconnected from their natural environments due to urbanization, industrialization, commoditization, and transnational corporatization. We present a vision of entrepreneurship that focuses on the Earth as our majority shareholder.

We’re not just talking about entrepreneurship focused on sustainability, but sustainability focused on entrepreneurship. We could spend days adding our current problems to the list but we’d rather act with solutions. By re-defining entrepreneurship, we look to teach those who assume their role as guardians of the earth to develop their own initiatives, based in a socially just setting.

Startups--meet permaculture.  Permaculture--meet startups. Clutch Village in Black Rock City will operate as a place that builds community between sustainability and entrepreneurship, fosters creation of new ideas, operates in action mode and accelerates movements.

We envision several camps in the village. Workshops will be led by a series of guest lecturers and camp members on topics ranging from permaculture, ecology, appropriate technology,  local economy, and bridging the tech world with the natural world.

We are currently building our core group of organizers and 40-80 inhabitants of our village. We are seeking individuals who appreciate both the process and results of building sustainable systems and initiatives.  If you are interested in getting involved, please send an email to: clutchvillage@gmail.com"
