ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Howdy folks and welcome to this edition of the JRS … we’ve got some important Black Rock City news for you this time ‘round, so pay some attention!
First off, Burner Express shuttle bus tickets are now on sale, and the Burning Man Rideshare board has been revamped and relaunched! So if you want to get to Black Rock City the eco-conscious and fiscally-responsible way, we’ve made it easier than ever. Plus, as we like to remind you, carpooling to Burning Man helps future-proof our event!
Next up, we’ve got this year’s Black Rock City plan (and more importantly, street names!) for ya, too.
And finally (if that weren’t enough), if you’ve got an event or activity planned for Burning Man 2015 that you want the citizens of Black Rock City to know about, the Playa Events calendar will start accepting submissions next week … details below.
In the less-than-ideal category (yes, that’s a thing), the Nevada Legislature passed an entertainment tax law that will add a 9% tax on every Burning Man ticket sold, starting in 2016. Yep, really. See the story below.
The Man burns in 87 days.

More Butts, Fewer Seats! Rideshare Is Now Open WORLDWIDE
The Burning Man Rideshare board is now live for 2015, so get in there and find your ride to Black Rock City ... or to any other Burning Man event on the entire planet, for that matter. We’re making our Rideshare board available to any Burning Man Regional event to manage their own carpooling efforts.
That’s right, we’re taking our sustainability efforts global. Any of the 60+ Burning Man Regional events around the world will be able to facilitate carpooling and flight-sharing using this system (whether they do or not is up to them).
Wait, flight-sharing what? Yes, that’s right. If you’ve got an extra seat to share on your plane, we got that covered too — whichever airport you’re using.

Call for Submissions: The 2015 Burner Resource Page
In our efforts to help our community help itself, and to support the cottage industry that's grown up around our little shindig in the desert, we'll be publishing our Burning Man Resource Listing again this year. So, if you're a Burner-owned or Burner-oriented business, and would like to offer your wares to Burners everywhere, fill out this form by Wednesday June 24, 2015.
We will create a webpage of all submissions that don't violate copyright, trademark or other laws, and publicize it to our community starting on July 1, 2015. Late submissions will not be considered for publication. No exceptions. We reserve the right NOT to publish anything we deem inappropriate.
And remember, Burning Man is not anti-commerce. We're against commodification, which is quite a different thing. We recognize that commerce makes the world go around, and we believe in the creativity and drive of small business owners. Those are the folks we seek to support here, in the face of mass market consumerism. Keepin' it in the family. So, participating businesses, thank you for serving and supporting our community!
Here's the form.

First Asian Leadership Summit with Burning Man Founders
|
 |
| |
Olive writes:
"On May 10-12, over 25 Burning Man Regional Contacts, community leaders, and event organizers from Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore and the Philippines gathered in Taiwan for the first Asia Burner Leadership Summit.
Joined by Burning Man founder Larry Harvey and CEO Marian Goodell, the event was hosted at the Dream Community in Taipei. Friday evening started with a drum and fire jam and Q&A session with Larry, Marian, and Dream Community founder Gordon Tsai moderated by Ian Rowen, summit organizer and International Meta-regional contact (China and Taiwan). Saturday featured regional presentations, break-out discussion sessions, and planning for future regional growth and integration.
Asian Burners are building big projects for Black Rock City this year. A cybernetic collaboration between Taiwan, China and the Burner diaspora, FoxCarn & the Betel Store, will set up shop in the Midway at the Man base this year. Exploring the symbiotic relationship between Chinese factories and Western consumer culture, FoxCarn's rallying cries include: “Consume different! Think global, exploit local. Decommodifying the fetish, unalienating labor. Circulating gifts of Taiwan and China with the Burning world.” Learn more on the Facebook page.
Also coming this year, the Mazu Goddess of the Empty Sea project will be a transnational temple to the Taiwanese deity, Mazu. Featuring a 40-foot tall lotus and fire breathing dragons encircled with lanterns, this temple will also offer oracles providing guidance to desert pilgrims, and host a story-telling parade with giant puppets. Learn more on the project's website or support the project on Indiegogo."

David Best to Build Temple at Patricia’s Green
The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) and Burning Man are pleased to announce the creation of The Temple at Patricia’s Green by renowned artist David Best, to be installed in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. Originally proposed by SFAC, and produced in close collaboration with the Burning Man nonprofit, the new temple will commemorate the 10th anniversary of Best’s Hayes Valley Temple, exhibited at the same location — on Octavia Street at Linden Street — in 2005.

An Open Letter to Businesses Who Want to Offer Luxury Trips to Burning Man
Caveat writes:
"Dear Entrepreneurs:
We’ve never met — at least I don’t think — and so I don’t know whether you’re true believing Burners who are just trying to make a buck sharing something you love without thinking it through or opportunists trying to strip-mine our culture and sell the raw materials to the highest bidder. Could go either way, and I prefer not to think the worst about people, no matter how often it’s justified."

Why Radical Inclusion Should Make Us Uncomfortable
And on the other hand, Caveat writes:
"I’ve always taken Radical Inclusion very personally because I’m convinced that, if it weren’t for Radical Inclusion, I never would have been let into Burning Man. You didn’t know me back then: somebody would have said 'I don’t know about this guy. Is he reaaaaally one of us?' Instead they said 'Welcome Home.'
Done right, Radical Inclusion is the engine that keeps our creative energies going year after year — and is frequently uncomfortable. If it’s not at least a little uncomfortable from time to time, you’re probably just playing with the people you’d hang out with outside of Burning Man, and what good is that?"

What's it Like to Be a Burning Man Doctor?
Jenny Kane writes:
"Burning Man is a weeklong stretch of partying in the most bizarre circumstances. So, what if you had to run a hospital at it?
Dr. Jeff Westin, who has formerly served as the event's associate medical director, this year takes on the role of medical director at the event.
Westin, a recent transplant to the Reno-area, is an emergency medical physician by trade. For a week out of every year, he becomes a Burner doctor."

Nevada's "Burning Man Tax" Passes
Jenny Kane also writes:
"Nevada Burners might have conflicting feelings about a new tax ushered in by the Nevada Legislature late Monday.
On the one hand, their home-state will make more money. On the other, Burning Man officials say that they are looking at all of their options to reckon with the estimated $2.8 million that the tax will cost Burning Man each year.
What are the options?"

Video: Former Congressman's Mind Blown after First Time at Burning Man
Former US Representative Dennis Kucinich sat down with Burning Man founder Larry Harvey for a conversation at the 2015 Burning Man Global Leadership conference in San Francisco.
Dennis participated in the Burning Man event in Nevada in 2014 and as he tells Larry Harvey, "I got it in a second." Dennis was so moved by his experience in Black Rock City that he gave the keynote presentation at the 2015 Burning Man Global Leadership Conference. The GLC is an annual conference held in San Francisco where Burning Man organizers, community leaders, and regional contacts come together for an inspiring weekend of conversations and skill sharing.

Burning Nest: 3rd UK Regional Burn
Simon writes:
"Burning Nest, the UK Regional Burn, just celebrated its 3rd year at the end of May. It took place again in the Welsh valleys, near Port Talbot from May 21-26. People seriously upped their game this year and we saw a huge variety of creativity, art, music, workshops, fun, silliness, love and some genuinely moving Burns. We even had our own 'Esplanade' with a row of wonderfully varied theme cabins along the river running through the site.
If you want a glimpse of the fun had, here's the video we shot of many of the participants. (Warning: video contains ads because it uses copyrighted music.)
Hope to see you there next year!"

Sunset Supper Club Seeks Chefs and Helpers
Chef Dave writes:
"The Sunset Supper Club, founded in 2006 as the Golden Cafe Supper Club, is celebrating its 10th anniversary bringing candlelit gourmet dinners to the builders and shapers of Black Rock City. Each year our agents wander the playa, gifting gilded dinner tickets to the creators of art, the leaders of camps, the lighters of lamps, the makers of infrastructure, the recyclers of trash, and the performers of strange wonders.
Are you a skilled chef, apprentice, server, artist, or musician interested in being a part of culinary or performance art? Have you dreamed of presenting the exotic tastes of six continents, in a seven course meal served by staff in elegant, surreal, or nonexistent attire? Whether you're looking for a camp to join, or just want to guest chef, email blackrocksupperclub@gmail.com for more details!"

Jewelry of Burning Man Book Launch
|
 |
| |
Where: Burning Man offices, 660 Alabama Street, SF
When: Wednesday, July 8, 6-9 pm
LadyBee writes:
"Jeweler and teacher Karen Christians, art curator LadyBee and photographer George Post collaborated for two years on their newly published book, Jewelry of Burning Man. The book features over 20 years of playa jewelry, a section on Karen’s jewelry-making camp, Oasis 47, and a Maker section featuring 50 Burners who make and gift jewelry at the event — their work and their stories.
A lively introduction by renowned jeweler Thomas Mann opens the book. A well-researched archive of playa jewelry, including hundreds of examples, the book is also a testament to our gift economy, via its stories of the makers who generously gift their work. The range and diversity of the jewelry is impressive - from laser-cut wood to finely cast bronze and silver.
Please join Karen, LadyBee and George in a celebration of their book. Copies will be available for sale, and the authors will sign them."

Sunset Piano in Golden Gate Park in Memory of Nina Elizabeth Nilssen
Where: Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park
When: July 9-20
For two weeks, the Botanical Garden inside Golden Gate Park will partner with Sunset Piano to bring twelve pianos and a host of amazing performers to its idyllic settings. It's the Garden's 75th anniversary, and Sunset Piano is going to be a featured part of the celebrations.
During this time a number of amazing musicians will play, as well as leaving the pianos open for anyone to play. The installation will last 12 days and will have at least one or two special "concert" days when folks can wander between pianos and experience different kinds of music in different botanical settings.
This event is funded by a grant from the Nina Elizabeth Nilssen Scholarship Fund through the Burning Man Civic Arts Program. Nina was a young San Franciscan Burner passionate about music, nature, human rights and education of all people. She was killed at the age of 29, and this fund was established in her memory. You can learn more about Nina and this event on Voices of Burning Man.
