ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Perhaps you've been following the hullaballoo about the BLM's demands on Burning Man for this year's event? And the ongoing negotiations about the same? Perhaps you're concerned about whether we're going to get our event permit? Don't worry — we're working closely with the BLM on it, and we'll get there.
So yeah, keep packing.
In this JRS, we bring you plenty of opportunities to participate (it's a live music extravaganza!), more projects seeking your support, and the Burner Resource List for 2015, for those who prefer to patronize Burner-owned and Burner-friendly businesses for your playa preparation needs. Plus some bits that'll get you inspired for Black Rock City 2015!
We hope your plans are running smoothly, and you're holding it all together, because ...
The Man burns in 57 days.

We are looking for seasoned and brand new performers to join us on the Midway; both stages will be curated and scheduled. Performers are encouraged to sign up prior to Burning Man, as time slots will fill up fast. You will not be provided a ticket to Burning Man for performing, you will need to have ticket in hand.

Burning Man 2015 Resource List
Once again, we present the annual Burning Man Resource List.
This is a list of fellow JRS readers who are offering you their bits, bobs, wares and suchlike (and often special discounts for Burners) to help you prepare for the playa. And some of the listings stretch the concept of playa preparation a bit, it's true, but rather than arbitrate that, we decided to interpret broadly and let you decide.
Now, we hear back every year from people for whom the Resource issue strikes a discordant note in their Burning Man world. We'd like to offer a reminder that Burning Man's principles don't state that our community is opposed to commerce. The thing we avoid is commodification of our culture, which is quite a different thing (although the line between the two can be very fine sometimes). Commerce is a part of daily existence — including those days spent preparing for Black Rock City.
Over the years, we've witnessed a lot of creativity and drive from small business owners who are Burners, and we've seen a cottage industry grow apace with our event — those are the folks we share with you here, in hopes we can keep it in the family in the face of mass market consumerism.
Of course, you don't need to buy a bunch of stuff to go to Burning Man, and what counts most is your creativity. But from Burner DIY goods on Etsy to discounts on EL wire you can use to create your crazy idea of a thing, we'd be remiss not to share these submitted links with you.
Please note that if you want to submit a listing, our submission deadline has passed, and we're accepting late submissions.

The Temple at Patricia’s Green
The Temple has come to San Francisco again! Josie writes:
"Last Friday, a jubilant group of locals, art lovers, Burners, City officials, neighborhood activists, and a sizable crew of staff from the San Francisco Burning Man office made their way to the Hayes Valley neighborhood, and gathered to celebrate the unveiling of David Best’s latest temple in San Francisco. Best’s temples, as any Burner knows, have a hard-to-describe, extraordinary quality about them. Each one conveys a distinct meaning specific to its location, community, and point in history. This one is special to us here at Burning Man Arts, as it marks the tenth anniversary of our Civic Arts Program."

AfrikaBurn is a Sign of Things to Come
Ermahgerd this is good. Zac went to AfrikaBurn and has something to say.
"I waited in line. Showed my ticket at the gate. Had my vehicle searched. Got my WTF Guide. Rang the Virgin bell. Hugged a Greeter. Navigated the backstreets. Found a camping spot. And then thought:
'This is fucking trippy.'
I knew this place. It was Burning Man.
Kind of."

Another BRC Love Story in The Washington Post
This is a sweet "welcome home" story. Dara Bramson writes:
"At dusk that evening, as I was fastening on my headlamp, preparing to wander off alone, Dan walked over. He asked if he could join me, and we spent hours wandering around what we called 'the moon,' the cracked desert floor that turns to dust upon contact. We talked about our families, our childhood, our dreams. Every so often we paused to marvel at a giant fire-breathing unicorn passing by or tinker with an amorphous colorful sculpture as one does in Black Rock City, where Burning Man takes place."

You Got Your Money in My Art! You Got Your Art in My Money!
Lastly but not leastly, from Voices of Burning Man's controversy editor, Caveat Magister:
"Most art isn’t that ugly, of course, but it doesn’t exist in a realm of pure intentions either. A field attracts that many enfant terribles for a reason. Getting great art is often complicated and messy, and there’s no other way it gets done. Is there?
Then, when you put money and art together – that’s when things get really complicated. This has always been a Gordian knot that Western society has preferred not to untangle, but right now our culture is going through a whole new set of convulsions as consuming art has never been easier but getting paid as an artist has never been harder."

Aaron Feinberg's Burning Man 2014 Photos
Aaron writes:
"This past year was the most challenging so far for me in the three burns I've been to. Not overly driven to capture as much as experience (radical participation), I somehow came away with the most images so far. With that behind, I am excited to continue my portrait project in to 2015 as well! In dust we trust!
Hope these get you as excited for this year's Burn as I am :)"

Sound and Performance Speed Dating
In this JRS issue, your humble Rabbits have decided to cram all the live music-related requests we've got into one Participate section, so as not to give the appearance of acoustical favoritism. Kicking us off, Reneasy writes:
"Calling all musicians, stage schedulers, and performers: Are you looking to expand your sound and performance resources on playa? Come take part in our experiment in social collaborations: Sound/Performance Speed Dating. We'll match you with performers, musicians, stages, and great people who are focused on creating performances and performing on playa.
To get involved pre-playa, email barbie@burningman.org with who you are (musician, stage scheduler, dancer, etc.), what you're looking for (stages, musicians, visual performance, etc.) and your vibe (jazz, electronic, everything KAZOO, etc.), and we will digitally introduce you to your performance counterparts. It's better than speed dating — it's Sound/Performance Speed Dating!
We are not responsible for end result of hilarious matches. We can not be held responsible if you are overrun with kazoos or kazoo players."

Burning Band Seeks More Musicians (You?)
Next up, it's the Burning Band. SINdy writes:
"The Burning Band! Wanna join? Since 1997, the original, first, ad hoc uniformed marching band founded exclusively at BRC — playing parties, bars, funerals, weddings, parades, bars, wake-ups, bars, and random walkabout raids. No sheet music, no heavy metal; all BB improv, on dozens of classic sing-alongs such as 'Walk Right In,' 'It’s a Long Way to Tipperary,' 'Yes, We Have No Bananas,' 'In Heaven There is No Beer,' and occasional cheerfully attempted requests.
Our dashing, gold-fringed Uniforms make all talent levels look and sound spiffy. So if you’re a backslidden high school or college band/orchestra type with any kind of instrument, or if you just love creating a ruckus, we want your body.
We also welcome gig requests, so let us know if you have an event you'd like us to play for. It can't ALL be random.
Get a glimpse on Facebook, or email SINdy or Carbon Buildup for more info and coercion.

Real LIVE Instruments, Bands and Musicians Wanted
Coming up next, Jenna Germany writes:
"That's right, you heard us. No base bumping, ting tweaking, repetitive electronic dance nonsense here. We seek real live instrumental musicians. Are you a jazz quartet? Jug band? Folk rocker? Americana Ensemble? We desire you!
The compassionate folks at Kamp Suckie Fuckaye have commited to give the ears of Black Rock the rarest form of music on the playa. We all love a good romping at the face blasting sound camps, but often, real singing voices and hand played instruments are a delight and a diamond in the dust.
We are booking for pleasing bands and musicians all week. Our Tuesday night Toolsday has been such a hit that Maynard himself would be proud.
We have mics, amps, projection mapping, even back up dancers and performers, whatever you need, let us know and we can work together to get the music to the ears.
Contact the coordinator Jenna Germany with links to your music."

Madi's Playa Choir Invites You to Participate
And finally, Madi writes:
"The Playa Choir welcomes singers of all abilities to share their voices in this unique BM experience. We rehearse at 10:30am-12:30pm W,T,F,S on playa and give two non-dogmatic, spirit driven, playa-style Sunday services at dawn and 11am. No audition, just email me, Madi, and I'll send you the music. Experienced soloists are encouraged to contact me for possible solo gifting!"

Recycle Costumes with Kostume Kult
|
 |
| |
Costume Jim writes:
"Kostume Kult is scrambling to fulfill our annual mission with enough finery and ridiculousness for this year's insatiable demand. With only a few weeks to go, we need lots more costume pieces, colorful fashion items or anything that can be reworked to create a glorious or absurd ensemble.
To recycle costumes and colorful fashion items with Kostume Kult - Please email us at Donations@KostumeKult.com. More info including a printable flyer you can give to your local costume store is on our website.
Please ship donations to our sorting location in Western PA or bring them by our Esplanade frontage location (~7:30 sector) early in the week… But we strongly prefer that you ship them to us before August. For sizable donations, we can help with shipping costs or send you a UPS label, and we can provide tax deduction letters for large donations… And donors get to jump the line on playa!
As we have since 2002, we are dedicated to this labor-of-love with the help of costume shops, theater groups and BURNERS LIKE YOU whose costume clutter is piling up and seeking new life on the backs, butts and boobs of those hoping to better participate on playa and year-around. All costumes are FREELY GIFTED — no barter, no returns. Nothing is expected other than to WEAR the stuff you want and dance down our runway with the encouragement of our emcees and DJs."

The Arbour, a Miniature Cathedral in the Dust
Josh writes:
"This artwork has been inspired by the tree-like forms of medieval rib vaulting. Medieval architects used these striking forms to achieve a soaring lightness and elevate the spirit; the architecture had a spiritual function.
The Arbour Kickstarter is coming to an end soon and needs your help to reach its target. Any support is greatly appreciated; it is only with your help that we can bring this piece to playa!"

Gallery of Infinity
From their Indiegogo page:
"Gallery of Infinity is a sideshow attraction displaying an array of various infinity mirrors to create wild effects and optical illusions within sprawling corridors. The installation involves walls built with layers of plexiglass sheets. Within the sheets, are LED bands that are hooked to proximity sensors to change colors schemes based on the movement of passing visitors. This structure creates a mind-boggling effect of colorful, dazzling lights that reflect into apparent infinity."

Support the JaNkaSaurUs Mutation, and Live Music on the Playa
Markle writes:
"Hi, we’re the JankyTown Arts Collective! Our village is 120 artists strong and includes some amazing Black Rock City musicians and performers from Albino, Cirque du Cliché, Fou Fou Ha, Ministry of Flow, Samba Stilt Circus, and SambaDá, just to name a few.
This year, we’re bringing a mobile stage to the playa in the form of a prehistoric mutant vehicle: The JaNkaSaurUs! Get ready for a mobile carnival experience. Perfect timing for this year’s theme, but we would have built either way really.
We love the playa’s beats and electronic music, but the main reason for us to Burn are the live performances we experience and create. We wish to share our music and art beyond our village, throughout BRC and the Regional Network.
We need financial support to get there! Read more and considering contributing on our Indiegogo page."
