ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Welcome back... here. You made it.
Some Burn, huh? How 'bout that Space Whale? How 'bout that white-green-purple-orange Lighthouse burn? Wasn't Mayan Warrior's sound incredible this year? Did you check out the Russian banya camp? Ohhhh, you'd better catch them next time.
And then, of course, there was YOU and all the ways you made Black Rock City happen. Thank you for everything.
So that's that. Now what? Time to be counted in the Census, track down all your lost stuff, and leave your feedback on how it all went. The best part is, your Burn is just starting. Black Rock City is the catalyst, but it's the year-round, worldwide reaction
that makes things interesting. This first JRS will get you started thinking about how to keep the fires burning.
What happens next? Whatever it is, time to get started!
The Man burns in 352 days.

Feedback Loop: Tell Us What You Think
Burning Man 2016 is in the bag! And now, we want your feedback. Your thoughts, concerns, questions and reflections will factor into our planning for 2017 and beyond!
The staff reads every word and your input becomes a part of our annual staff debrief process. We’re always open to your feedback, but we’ll be closing the 2016 Black Rock City Feedback Loop on October 15 to incorporate submissions in our review process. Submit your thoughts here:
Feedback Loop
Note: while we do send individualized responses to some submissions, we aren’t able to respond to every one. Subjects generating a lot of public comment will be addressed here in the JRS.

Stand Up and Be Counted! Fill Out Your BRC Census
The Census Team writes:
"Did you attend Burning Man 2016? Are you still washing the dust off? If so, BRC Census would like to invite you to take a break from your unpacking to fill out our annual online survey so we can include your data in our 2016 reports.
For more information about our methods, including a description of how we combine the results from our online survey with the results from the random sample we conducted on-playa, check out our blog post.
Finally, if you are one of the phenomenal volunteers who contributed to BRC Census’ projects on-playa this year, thank you! We couldn’t make this happen without your help and participation. This was a fantastic year. Thanks to all of you who were out there making it happen!"

Lost and Found: Un-Leave Your Traces
The amazing Lost and Found volunteers write:
"Lost something on the playa? Go to the Lost and Found website and follow the instructions. You can search database pictures of phones, clothes and bags. You can also search on your last name for an item with your name on it. You also can describe lost electronic gadgets, cameras and misc. items.
New this year, we will post pictures from lost cameras on the Lost and Found website, once we unpack and resume work. Watch for a Jackrabbit Speaks announcement on when selected pics from lost cameras, keys and glasses pictures are posted.
Our community at large finds many items on playa and posts them to our ePlaya bulletin board, where you can register, look for, or post a lost item."

Law Enforcement Feedback
Did you have or witness an encounter with law enforcement on the playa this year? Whether positive or negative, we want to know about it.
We use this information to work with law enforcement to improve our relations and their interactions with our community, and to ensure your constitutional and civil rights are being protected while in Black Rock City. And we can't be successful in that effort if we don't have your stories.
So please, take a moment to fill out and submit a Law Enforcement Feedback Form.

Lawyers for Burners
If you got arrested or received a citation on playa, you don't have to go it alone. A grassroots volunteer organization called Lawyers For Burners may be able to help you with finding a lawyer or providing legal advice.
Visit their website for more information.
Tip: to contact LFB, fill out their Feedback Form (linked from the left hand column), and they'll be in touch.

Building Black Rock City 2016
Since 2008, John Curley, a.k.a. Headshot, has been doing the hero's work of documenting the annual rise and fall of Black Rock City through heartwarming, informative and touching dispatches from the playa.
Wanna know how many posts Headshot wrote this year? Thirteen. Thirteen posts, John. As Headshot is known to say when a writer or photographer blows his mind, we say, "Damn you, John Curley!"
For real, though: Thank you, John. We can't thank you enough for telling the story of Black Rock City year in and year out.
Read John Curley's 2016 stories in the Burning Man Journal
(Note: you have to click over to page 2 to see them all, because he wrote 13 freaking posts.)

Burning Man 2016 Multimedia Extravaganza

If you miss the sights and sounds of BRC already, at least there's some consolation: The people who take photos and make videos at Burning Man tend to be awesome at it. Here are some early favorites:
In photos, Brian McGloin's gallery collects a whole bunch of up-close and personal impressions from throughout the week, and Wendell DeLano's gallery zooms in on BRC 2016's big art.
In moving pictures, well, everybody likes a nice aerial drone Burning Man video, this one by Phantom Aerial Productions. For contrast, bask in Isi Sarfati's glorious, symphonic slo-mo video shot on a phone! That second one's from last year, but we just got it, and hey, it'll still look familiar.
Finally, we usually avoid these because the copyrighted music results in automated ads, but we can't wrap up 2016 without an on-playa Prince lip sync video, now can we?

Deep Playa Sunrise: A Narrative Short Film Set at Burning Man
It’s not easy to tell a fictional Burning Man story that works. This short film has done it. Josh Yeo writes:
“A narrative short film shot at Burning Man 2015 which follows the journey of a first time Burner on an unexpected adventure for hearing aid batteries. Having recently been stripped of his hearing, our hero’s quest in a foreign place with an unlikely friend is a simple one. How difficult could it be to find what you are searching for in the desert?”

Stay Involved, Keep the Fires Burning Year-Round

Many of us have just returned from our beloved Black Rock City. We are inspired, tired, changed, and, of course, extra dusty. As you know, our city is what we make it. Thanks for contributing, in whatever way you did, to BRC 2016! Now, it’s time to dust ourselves off and share the benefits of our experiences with the rest of the world.
Year-round, beyond Black Rock City, Burning Man works to inspire and instigate more experiences, environments, and events that invite personal growth and nurture community. With our year-round, global projects, we hope to create the conditions for lasting positive change for more people.
Through our global network of Regional Events, Civic Art projects, direct artist support through our Global Art Grants program, and shared initiatives with affiliated organizations, we can share the transformative potential of our culture all year long.
Our year-round programs are supported by the extraordinary generosity of our community. Together, we can change the paradigm of our commodified society and build a more creative, expressive, and connected world. Donate to our year-round programs today, and help us fund more art, support more artists, train more leaders, and inspire more events around the world!

Thank You for Supporting Art in Black Rock City!
Here's a big thank you to everybody who supported Burning Man projects this year, whether it was a financial contribution, a donation, or volunteering your time and talents, the fruits of your generosity sure did show on playa!
While it does seem during the thick of the fundraising season that we're getting inundated by requests for support, the end result is that more people have the opportunity to contribute to these projects, making them truly community-generated creations. So thank you!
