GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Okay, it's October! Everybody feel back to normal yet? Yeah, didn't think so.

Fortunately, the JRS this time of year offers plenty of ways to bask and reminisce. We've got writings, photos and videos galore, and a bunch of upcoming Regional Events and Decompressions.

This issue also offers ways to give back after receiving the gift of this year's Burn. There's a call out for your written stories about great gifts or playa names. If you're really in the giving spirit, there's also a chance to join Burners Without Borders to provide relief from historic flooding in Louisiana.

And stay tuned to the very end of this issue for an important message for grammar pedants.

Don't forget to fill out your 2016 Census!

The Man burns in 333 days.

Feedback Loop: Tell Us What You Think

Burning Man 2016 is in the bag! And now, we want your feedback. Your thoughts, concerns, questions and reflections will factor into our planning for 2017 and beyond!

The staff reads every word and your input becomes a part of our annual staff debrief process. We’re always open to your feedback, but we’ll be closing the 2016 Black Rock City Feedback Loop on October 15 to incorporate submissions in our review process. Submit your thoughts here: Feedback Loop

Note: while we do send individualized responses to some submissions, we aren’t able to respond to every one. Subjects generating a lot of public comment will be addressed here in the JRS.

Burners Without Borders Assisting with Louisiana Flood Recovery

Christopher Breedlove writes:

"Over 50 Burners are contributing time, labor, and resources to aid flood survivors in Louisiana. Over 100,000 people are still waiting for a FEMA response, and Burners Without Borders is calling you into action. This is a disaster with ‘no name’, and it’s critical that we tell the story and get involved.

Join the fray with BWB and collaborating organizations providing housing for volunteers and local efforts that need assistance (That’s you!) with everything from gutting, cleaning, food prep, warehouse sorting, construction, and resource delivery.

If you cannot make it in person, consider donating resources or funds to help with the effort. More information on the BWB website.

Read a volunteer's account of his first day on the job here.

If you can join the relief efforts in person, fill out this form."

MOOP Map 2016

It’s superhero season out on the playa. Playa Restoration has been busting butt to sweep the dust and create the MOOP Map, that all-important record of how well Black Rock City did at Leaving No Trace this year. Summer Burkes has been out there the whole time doggedly reporting on the progress. Read all Summer’s Playa Resto 2016 installments in the Burning Man Journal

The Litterati

In the midst of the MOOP Map reporting, we got a bonus John Curley post this year! He reports on the Litterati, the DPW crew sweeping the highways outside the event for matter out of place:

“For quite a few years, a hardy band of people from the DPW have traveled those same highways and byways, looking for things that might have escaped your grasp. And, just like many things about the DPW these days, the efforts have gotten sharper and more focused, and the hard work seems to be paying off.”

Art and Science of the Burn / BurningMon Go

Susan Karlin at Fast Company has two great Burning Man stories this year, one about the pyrotechnical details of the Man Burn and the people who pull it off, and another about some Burners’ low-tech BurningMon Go game, which you may have read about in the JRS before the event.

Fly Ranch: The Next Step in the Grand Adventure

Jessi “Sprocket” Janusee writes:

“And then I started crying. Not sobbing but just a slow and steady leak. I’m sure the eight days of heat and dust and low level dehydration in a city full of friends and strangers and art and challenges had something to do with it. My partner-in-crime, Aric, leaned in quizzically and asked, ‘are you really crying about Fly Ranch right now?’”

The Mosaic Experiment: Burning Man in Southeast Ohio

LynAnne Vucovich writes:

"The Mosaic Experiment, an official regional event of Burning Man, is a four-day camping and music event in Rutland. The all-age event is based on Burning Man’s 10 Principles and is run entirely by volunteers. Regional Burning Man events are meant to bring the principles to local areas away from the desert and bring people together.

‘Everyone is so welcoming,’ Elizabeth Braithwaite, the co-leader of first aid, said. ‘It’s like a big family there.’"

Thank You for Supporting Art in Black Rock City!

Here's a big thank you to everybody who supported Burning Man projects this year, whether it was a financial contribution, a donation, or volunteering your time and talents, the fruits of your generosity sure did show on playa!

While it does seem during the thick of the fundraising season that we're getting inundated by requests for support, the end result is that more people have the opportunity to contribute to these projects, making them truly community-generated creations. So, thank you!

SOUNDTRACK FOR THIS JRS

We were listening to ...

We interrupt this program for a special message.

The Jackrabbit has learned that complaints have been lodged through extremely circuitous means concerning the pluralization of the title Jackrabbit Emeritus.

The second Jackrabbit Emeritus was added to the masthead as of Vol. 20, #10. When the sitting Jackrabbit’s request to pluralize this title was granted as of #13, the title was pluralized to “Jackrabbits Emeritus.”

The present Jackrabbit, having been trained in the global hegemonic language known as English (and having never studied Latin, an extinct language spoken by this Jackrabbit’s ancestors’ oppressors two millennia ago), made this decision in line with well established English pluralization rules. Precedents include pluralized titles of similarly honorable offices, e.g. “attorneys general,” everyday terms like “passersby”, as well as the longstanding, universally accepted* pluralization of Burning Man events, “Burnings Man.”

Nevertheless, the incessant dribble of indirect complaints prompted an investigation, and the Jackrabbit has found that honorary Latin titles in fancy-ass institutions like college and Burning Man follow Latin rules of pluralization. Therefore, the masthead now bears the correct Latinized pluralization, Jackrabbits Emeriti.

We deeply regret the error.

Please direct complaints about gender-normativity of defaulting to the masculine plural form for this mixed-gender list to anyone who insists that Burning Man writers use proper Latin.

*Some restrictions apply. Usage may not be accepted in all universes.
