2009 Evolution Poster, Back by Popular Demand

Ranger Dusty writes:

"If you attended Burning Man in 2009 (or even if you didn't!) you may be one of the people who has been writing to us asking for the amazing Evolution-themed poster from that year. Alas, they were sold out for quite some time. But now they are back, and you can acquire one by visiting the Burning Man Marketplace.

This master work by Cory and Catska Ench has been re-printed in double size (20″x 36″), because the detail is THAT amazing."

Desert Arts Preview 2015 Video

Burning Man Arts hosted the 10th annual Desert Arts Preview on Sunday May 3 at the Cowell Theater in San Francisco’s Fort Mason. This sold out event, held in its largest venue to date, featured eight artists (and art teams) talking about their artworks in progress destined for Black Rock City 2015.

Speakers included Jon Sarriugarte and Kyrsten Mate (Project Empire), Rebecca Anders (Illumicanth), Scott “Skeeter” Cohen (The Life Cube), Flux Foundation (Dreamland), Capra J’neva (Axayacoatl), Chris “Kiwi” Hankins (Goddess of the Empty Sea), Marco Cochrane and Julia Whitelaw (R-Evolution), and Jazz Tigan (Temple of Promise).

We’ve recorded the event for your viewing pleasure.

Artist Update: Global Lives Project

Denise Li writes:

"The Global Lives Project, in its infancy, was funded by the Global Art Grants program in 2007. At that time, Global Lives was a small collective of ambitious, visionary filmmakers and activists.

Now a nonprofit organization, Global Lives is comprised of hundreds of volunteers (filmmakers, photographers, engineers, programmers, scholars, etc.). Their growth and commitment to their vision is truly inspiring!"

Tales From The Playa are the dreams and memories of events that took place in Black Rock City, as told by participants. That’s you.

There's plenty to read about Burning Man out there, but we believe the most intimate and vivid picture comes from Burners' first-hand accounts. So send us your stories, and we'll publish them on Voices of Burning Man.

You can follow Tales From The Playa on the blog or on Twitter at @FromThePlaya.

Burning by Dylan Jones

The Jackrabbits have quite a pile of photo and video submissions, as you might imagine, but this one really stood out to us this week. Whitebear writes:

"This is a video I put together after my first burn this past year. My first impressions of everything were so overwhelming in the most positive way and I wanted to capture that as I was experiencing it. Biking through the streets, exploring the playa, climbing art, playing in dust storms, seeing a wedding, and meeting awesome people. I look forward to my next experience and being able to capture it with a new perspective. Hope you enjoy."

Black Rock Rangers Want You — Yes, YOU — to Become a Ranger

Hold Me Closer writes:

Would you like to REALLY get to know Black Rock City by walking its streets and meeting other participants? Do you like to help out when things have gotten a bit too wacky for somebody, when tempers flare, or when someone just needs a sympathetic ear?

If so, Rangering might be for you. Black Rock Rangers act as community mediators, facilitators of public safety (with the expectation that everybody has read the back of their ticket, of course!), providers of reliable information, and navigators of the edge of chaos.

Prospective Black Rock Rangers must be at least 18 years old and must have attended Burning Man a minimum of two times (and at least once within the past ten years). The deadline to apply to become a Ranger is August 1, but Ranger training has started!

For more information about the Rangers and the application process, please visit our website. Questions? Email us at: rangers@burningman.org.

Jazz Funeral for the Man

Iggy writes:

"2015 is the 5th anniversary of a lovely tradition, bringing the entire city together in joy and celebration, on that beautiful Sunday afternoon when the Man is fallen, but the Temple still stands. Please join us for a jazz funeral, as part of the band, or with the second line, to give the Man a proper sendoff."

Martial Artists, Acrobats, and Monks! The Black Rock Kwoon and Dojo Wants You

Kannik writes:

"Do you have a passion for martial arts and acrobatics? Do you seek a shrine in which to practice your meditation? The Black Rock Kwoon and Dojo is looking for you!

There are many opportunities to be part of our temple:

  • Teaching martial arts and similar classes
  • Leading meditation sessions
  • Delivering goodies with flair and panache!
  • Camp with us and join fellow martial and meditation artists!
  • Contribute martial arts gear, benches, and temple accoutrements

If you’d like to participate, please sign up here.

Our Facebook page is information central.

And you may email us directly for more information.

And when you are on the playa, stop by our temple to train and learn!"

Acapplaya Seeks Experienced Singers

Bonnie writes:

"Acapplaya has been the organic on-playa acappella soundtrack for 11 years and counting. Each year we bring a new, ½ hour set of Jazz, Funk, Rock, and Ridiculous to the playa. We’re very lucky to have some of the highest caliber vocal musicians from the world over that gather just for the Burn each year. We perform throughout the event, from Center Camp to the Jazz Cafe to Champagne Lounge to random places we just stumble into and join in the fun.

We have two open positions this year: Alto and Baritone. If you have small vocal ensemble jazz singing experience (one voice to a part), love challenging music, want to share the gift of music with others and sing in one of the aforementioned vocal ranges, contact Bonnie at bonnie@proteadev.com. Dusty hugs!"

How Do I Support a Burning Man Art Project?

So you'd like to help out with an art project, but you're not sure how. Well, you can gift your services, skills, time, resources, or funding. There are plenty of projects in need of assistance. Here's how to find them:

Support the Temple of Promise

Each year, the Temple needs to raise a big portion of its budget from participants like you in order to provide its invaluable service as the spiritual heart of Black Rock City. The time has come once again, people. Please donate to support the Temple of Promise today, and ask your friends to do the same.

Support the Storied Haven Project

Storied Haven, the latest project from 5 Ton Crane — creators of such magic as the Steampunk Treehouse, the Raygun Gothic Rocketship, the Nautilus mutant vehicle and more — needs your help to make it to the playa. They've earned an honorarium art grant from Burning Man Arts, but they need more to bring it home.

Let them feel your appreciation for their hard work and impressive achievements over the years: pop open their Indiegogo campaign and give it some love!

Help Us Bring Lacuna to Berkeley in June

Toe writes:

"Lacuna, a FLUX Foundation project, is being installed in downtown Berkeley the first week of June for the Bay Area Book Festival, and we're looking for Black Rock Rangers, Temple Guardians, and anyone experienced in working with folks who have mental health issues to help us bring this project to life safely and thoughtfully. Can you help? Say hello to Toe at toe@baybookfest.org."
