ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

So let's see, what's been crawling up our leg this week? Ah, a few things ...
If you're looking to secure pre-placement for your theme camp, the deadline to submit your Placement questionniare is April 30 at 12 noon PDT (and really, if you're a theme camp organizer and this is news to you, c'mon now ...).
Onward!
We've announced the recipients of Burning Man Arts' Global Art Grants for 2015, which is super inspiring and awesome. Speaking of art ...
Our 10th annual Desert Arts Preview is this Sunday, May 3rd at San Francisco's Fort Mason, where you'll hear directly from artists about the work they're bringing to Black Rock City this year. It's always a great way to get the juices flowing for this year's Burn.
Burning Man Arts is also hosting an Artists' Symposium at Fort Mason, before the Desert Arts Preview, which is a special opportunity for artists to mind-meld and knowledge-share. If you're an artist, you want to be there, trust us.
And meanwhile, we've packed this JRS solid with particularly impressive photo galleries and fun opportunities to participate in Black Rock City, whether you're a baker, a bookworm, a border guard or a bassoonist. Yes, really.
The Man burns in 129 days.

Remembrance Plaque of Names of Burners Lost: 2014-2015
Each year since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition honors those who have participated in creating Burning Man and affected our Burning experiences.
This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year's Remembrance Plaque.
Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to remembrance@burningman.org. (Please DO NOT hit reply to this newsletter to submit a name.)
Submissions must be received by July 20 to be included on this year's plaque. Submissions after the 20 will be added to next year's plaque.
Please note that the plaque is displayed at the Man Base, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.
May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

For the last 14 years, we've been funding collaborative, interactive, and community-building art projects all over the world. 2015's grantee projects are exemplary of how our extended community of creative minds are manifesting the 10 Principles, through art, in their home towns.

Jewelry of Burning Man
|
 |
| |
We told you about this one previously, and here we go! LadyBee writes:
"We are happy to announce the publication of a new book, Jewelry of Burning Man. This two year project is a collaboration between Karen Christians, who runs a jewelry-making workshop at Oasis 47 on the playa; LadyBee, art curator/collector; and George Post, long-time Burning Man photographer and craft photographer by profession.
Playa jewelry is perhaps unique in that it has been fabricated entirely for the sole purpose of gifting to other participants, unconditionally and often at great expense and effort. The book tells the stories, themselves moving and sometimes extraordinary, behind each featured piece.
In addition to providing a detailed archive of playa jewelry, our book beautifully conveys our ethos of Gifting. Also included are a twenty-year chronology of playa jewelry, a section about Oasis 47 and its jewelry-making workshops on playa, a word on process and materials, and an introduction by renowned jeweler Thomas Mann.

(here's a PDF preview)
If you’re in Boston on May 21, you can attend an exhibit and book party. RSVP on Facebook"

The Derry Temple — A Small Step in the Same Direction
Josh Lease writes:
"Temple has redefined what art born in the desert can mean for the world. Before I left Derry I heard calls for other Temples in Derry, in Belfast, and in other cities across the world, because Temple changed Derry. It has shown that art can unite communities after times of deep divide, that fire can be a source of healing instead of intimidation, and amazingly what can happen when so many take a small step in the same direction."

Volunteer at the Black Rock City Airport
 |
|
| |
Avi8trix writes:
"Are you the one that keep noticing (and accurately identifying) the airplanes, ultralights, experimentals, helicopters, balloons and even the lone hang glider that travelled 70 miles last year, to orbit, land, depart and hover over our fair city? We need your help at 88NV, Black Rock City Municipal Airport, second busiest in Nevada and the 60th busiest in the nation for the week of the event.
Are you an air traffic controller, pilot, airline employee, dispatcher (any kind of dispatcher) or obsessive lover of all things aviation? We'd love to tap your sharp minds, strong arms and community enthusiasm. Or perhaps you're not an aviator, but have a flair for the dramatic (unleash your inner TSA employee, customs inspector, border guard or whatever you wish) and would like to help us welcome new arrivals.
If you can offer a few hours, a lot of hours, or want to become part of our camp of Aviators, we've got something for you to do!! Simply select 'Airport' on the Burner Volunteer Form or contact milehigh@burningman.com."

Nametag Day is Back, Now in San Francisco, New York and Pittsburgh
Michael writes:
"Two years ago we had a big idea: what if everyone wore a nametag for one day? A nametag says 'I am open. I want to talk to you.' We gifted 12,000 of them to New Yorkers, inviting them to celebrate openness, humanity, and immediacy.
We’re trying to bring the playa to the default world one piece at a time. Eventually, we want to see Nametag Day on every calendar and celebrated all over the globe. And now it’s coming to San Francisco!
Don’t wait! Visit nametagday.com right now and sign up to gift nametags with us on June 6! It’s one of the happiest ways you can spend two hours. While you’re there, you can also throw a few bucks at our Kickstarter, get pumped up by watching our awesome video, and RSVP to our Facebook event.
See you on June 6!"

Bakers! Volunteer at the Black Rock Bakery
Hella yum! The kids over at the Black Rock Bakery write:
"Do you love to bake? Have you ever wanted to try baking? Do you love the idea of a bakery on the playa? The Black Rock Bakery, part of the Black Rock French Quarter, has numerous ways you can help run the bakery and spread the joy of baked goods across the playa.
Make anything from cookies to birthday and wedding cakes, help pass out baked goods to fellow Burners, help with set up or tear down, help decorate the bakery, or even just help us lift the heavy stuff. Any skill, baking related or not, can be useful!
Join us for our sixth year in Black Rock City! For more information, visit our Facebook page."

How Do I Support a Burning Man Art Project?
So you'd like to help out with an art project, but you're not sure how. Well, you can gift your services, skills, time, resources, or funding. There are plenty of projects in need of assistance. Here's how to find them:

Radical Inclusion by Radical Accessibility
 |
|
| |
Rat Lady writes:
"Mobility Camp has offered services assisting the mobility impaired for over 15 years on the playa.
We are always looking for volunteers to assist on our people-moving trailer, co-pilots for the golf cart, and other key support. We still have room for campers, both mobility-impaired and the able-bodied. Those interested can check us out at mobilitycamp.org. Check out our Wish List page for more ways to help!
We also help legions of 'Walking Wounded', those injured just before or during Burning Man. We can always use complete sets of crutches (with pads, tips, screws and wingnuts), especially for the shorter Burners, walkers and wheelchairs (with footrests) with the bigger (5”) wheels up front. Bring 'em by and make someone's Burn!
If your camp offers an accessible activity, or a volunteer opportunity for the mobility-impaired, let us know! We are ALWAYS looking to inspire the mobility-impaired to invite adventure into their lives, including — or perhaps starting with — Burning Man. If you have any resources, websites, stories, tips and tricks for the alternatively-abled, please email us at brcaccessibility@gmail.com."

R-Evolution: Final Sculpture in Bliss Dance/Truth Is Beauty Series
|
 |
| |
Julia writes:
"R-Evolution is the third and final sculpture in the series of three monumental sculptures —The Bliss Project, by Marco Cochrane — of a woman expressing her humanity. At 48 feet tall, R-Evolution will debut at Burning Man 2015. These sculptures are intended to demand a change in perspective… to be catalysts for social change. They are intended to challenge the viewer to see past the sexual charge that has developed around the female body which has been used for power and control, to the human being. They are intended to de-objectify women and inspire us all to take action to end violence against women, thus allowing everyone to live fully and thrive.
Another collaboration with Deja Solis, R-Evolution is different than Bliss Dance and Truth is Beauty. There is no overt action in her expression; she is not dancing in the face of danger, she is not reaching to meet herself and find her own truth. In R-Evolution, Deja explores and expresses what she feels like when she can just be... a whole person... a woman, radiating her energy into the world."

We were listening to ...
The new Blur album. Did you hear that? We said "new Blur album." It has been 12 years since it was possible to say that. Them's the feels, right there.
Also Underworld, because timeless.
