ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Feels like we just pulled our head out of a hole and suddenly holy crap it's mid-APRIL! Do you realize what that means? It means Burning Man is coming before you know it, that's what!
OK deep breath — OK, we're not panicking yet. We'll save that for later. Plenty of time to panic.
This has to be one of the more jam-packed JRS's we've had in a while. Dunno — it's just been a particularly newsworthy couple weeks here, for some reason. Let's see, there's big Burners Without Borders news, a new laser policy (pew pew!), new owie fixers in BRC, the Desert Arts Preview event, and all the news that's fit to digitize about the massively overstimulating and overly-inspiring 2015 Global Leadership Conference.
Fun art project fundraising events are starting to pop up on the horizon (yep, it's that time of year), and we've got oppportunities to show your art, get your playa bike, and more.
The Man burns in 142 days. Noooooo panicking. No siree.

Burners Without Borders to Become Burning Man Program
We're very excited to announce that at long last, Burners Without Borders — the amazing grassroots group that supports community organizing and disaster relief worldwide — will transition on June 1 to become the cornerstone of Burning Man’s Civic Engagement initiatives.
BWB came into being after Hurricane Katrina when Burning Man participants left the event to help with the disaster cleanup effort. The organization has a 10-year history of supporting disaster relief and local grassroots volunteer initiatives around the world through its annual grants program and direct on-the-ground assistance, including relief efforts in Peru, the Tohoku Prefecture of Japan, Haiti, the Philippines, New Jersey and more.

New Policy on Handheld Lasers in Black Rock City
While the list of things you can do at Burning Man is about as long as your imagination, the list of things you can't do at Burning Man is very, very short. But things on that very short list are the things that can either outright kill you (weapons, speeding vehicles, serving iffy food) or screw up the environment (burning stuff right on the playa floor, visiting the hot springs during the event).
Sometimes you have to make a rule, because it's the right thing to do. And this is one of those times.
Starting in 2015, handheld lasers will be prohibited in Black Rock City. Mounted lasers are only permitted on art pieces, Mutant Vehicles and in theme camps if they comply with specific restrictions.
Read more about the rationale and see the full policy here.

Burning Man Selects CrowdRx to Provide BRC Medical Support Services
Burning Man has selected CrowdRx, Inc. to provide medical support services in Black Rock City beginning with the 2015 event. CrowdRx provides medical support to festivals including Bonnaroo and Coachella and has extensive experience operating in remote environments.
Participants will see very little change in medical support at the event, except that we will be providing additional first aid stations to make it easier for participants to find care on site.
In addition to its own team, CrowdRx will be employing Nevada-based medical professionals to help staff the operations and we'll continue working with Nevada hospitals and other safety professionals.

9th Annual Global Leadership Conference is a Wrap!
The 9th annual Burning Man Global Leadership Conference is a wrap! From humble beginnings in 2007, when 70 regional contacts joined us at Burning Man HQ, the GLC has since grown to include over 400 participants from around the world.
These highly-energized folks are Burning Man’s global representatives and community leaders, ambassadors of Burning Man culture in their regions who throw any of 65 regional events in 20 countries, and faciltiate countless creative civic initiatives at the grassroots level. They participate in the GLC to share ideas, best practices and inspiration, and to make the invaluable face-to-face connections that may just lead to the next big thing.

Female Leadership: “There’s chicks in charge everywhere.”
Jessi 'Sprocket' Janusee wrote a stellar story about how Burning Man is ironically named, considering that it's basically run by women:
"'Women have been running Burning Man since the getgo.' Harley states with sincerity and a bit of levity. Marian Goodell, Crimson Rose and Harley were incredibly instrumental in the creation of Black Rock City. Harley built all her teams by making dinner and feeding them. One of Harley’s tricks is to be nourishing and accommodating, it gets the job done."

Center Camp Café is Calling for Artists
Kez writes:
"Calling all artists and makers! How would you like to place your art in one of the most populated structures on the playa? You have the opportunity to exhibit your talent and ideas in Center Camp Café for Burning Man 2015!
Help us enhance this environment and engage your fellow Black Rock Citizens as they mix and mingle in this popular hot spot on the playa. We are looking for art in all shapes and sizes!
If you have a sculpture that would get lost in the great expanse of the open playa, and might be appreciated in a more intimate setting, please let us know! You can also take over one of our 'alcove' spaces and create your own environment or vision of the 'Carnival of Mirrors' theme."

Getting Your Playa Bike in Reno
 |
|
| |
Nathan writes:
"Whether you are flying or driving through Reno, getting a bike there before you head off on the last 120 miles to Black Rock City will save you hassle and money. There are a number of bike programs operated by (and particularly devoted to) Burners in Reno, and they're ready to take reservations. But their bikes are in really high demand, so act now!
Kiwanis Bike Program
145 Catron Drive, Reno
Our friends at the Kiwanis Bike Program sell affordable used bikes, as well as new accessories, such as lights, el-wire kits, baskets, car racks, locks, fat seats, bells, and more. And after the Burn, you can either store your bike with them until next year, or you can donate it back to be refurbished for kids or for other Burners next year. All funds support bike donations, repairs, and education for at-risk kids in the Reno area. Reserve a Kiwanis bike now while supplies last. Check out their website and email questions to kiwanis_bikes@sbcglobal.net.
Loop Cycles
Loop Cycles returns this year providing new and improved bikes designed ideally for the playa, as well as a variety of accessories. Affiliated with Bicycles For Humanity, they also offer Burners the opportunity to extend the gift of giving beyond Black Rock City. Buy your Loop Bike online, pick it up in Reno, and then give the gift of mobility to someone in-need in Namibia, Africa by donating your bike back after the Burn. See their website for all the details, and email them at info@loopcycles.org.
Black Rock Bicycles
7875 North Virginia Street, Reno
Black Rock Bicycles has a variety of bikes for both rent and purchase great for the playa. They also have many accessories, including trailers, car racks, lighting, el-wire kits, baskets, bells, locks, tubes, and decor. Temple of Transformance: Peacebuilding Through Communal Healing
 |
|
| |
Where: George Mason Univ, Fairfax, VA
When: April 21-May 8, 2015
Nice to see that the Temple meme is catching on ... Michael Verdon writes:
"The Temple of Transformance is an installation that opens on April 21, 2015. It is located on George Mason University's Fairfax campus. At the heart of this art work, it is a peace building structure. This Temple will bring people together and create a space for reflection and healing. Participants are invited to share their stories of remembrance, loss, fear, and forgiveness within its walls.
On the night of May 8, 2015 at 8:30 pm, while it is floating on Mason Pond, we will transform the Temple from tangible object into collective memory. It becomes a vessel to relinquish our feelings of fear and loss so we may move forward and heal together. This project is free and open to the public.
On April 21, Michael will be speaking to the Undergrad Symposium of the Conflict Analysis and Resolution (S-CAR). On April 22, Michael will be speaking at a graduate seminar for the S-CAR program. These talks will frame this form of art within the realm of conflict transformation, this healing experience, and how it can be used to bond communities."

We were listening to ...
The first Rabbit who worked on this issue just went to "Drum and Bass," clicked shuffle, clicked repeat all, and turned the volume up all the way. After he was done, he selected all the music, deleted it, and emptied the trash.
The second Rabbit cranked the Aphex Twin radio station, and deleted nothing.
