ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

You're probably thinking hey wait a minute, didn't I just get a JRS last week? Why yes, yes you did. And here we are again, all up in your inbox. Did you miss us?
Well, we just couldn't wait to tell you that the 2014 AfterBurn Report is now live. For those new to the game, the AfterBurn is the accounting of all the activities, events and action-items that went into creating Black Rock City for a given year. We've been publishing it since 2001 (that's like, forever) and lo and behold, we have one for Burning Man 2014, ready for your curious eyeholes.
We've also got some news about moving and shaking on the Burning Man Project board, the amazing Temple burn in Northern Ireland, 1000-foot-tall giants stomping Black Rock City, Blazing Swans, a looming Dennis Kucinich encounter and more. Y'know, just another day around BMHQ.
The Man burns in 156 days. Hope you're faring well.

Hey Now! It's the 2014 AfterBurn Report!
Now that Burning Man is a bona fide nonprofit, we're shifting how we do our annual reports. Used to be, the AfterBurn report told you everything you'd possibly want to know about the Burning Man organization's efforts to manifest Black Rock City, and everything else we were doing around the world. But now ...
The Burning Man organization will be publishing an annual report in the summer, detailing our nonprofit activities and telling of all the things Burning Man has been up to year-round, around the world. The AfterBurn report will tell the tale of Black Rock City for a given year, and is now a much more condensed — and we believe readable — version of its former self.
And with that pithy preamble, here (drumroll) is your 2014 AfterBurn report. All hail!

Burning Man Project Board of Directors – Membership Update
Jim Tananbaum, who joined the Burning Man Project Board of Directors in April of 2014, has resigned his board position.
Jim is a six-year Burner who first attended Burning Man in 2009. He was inspired to join the Board after witnessing Burning Man's potential to have a positive impact on the world and has contributed in meaningful ways to the Board. Jim intends to continue his generous work supporting the Burning Man community.
Burning Man CEO Marian Goodell and the remaining members of the Board of Directors extend their gratitude to Jim for his year of service and for all his contributions to the Burning Man Project.

Tales From The Playa
 |
|
| |
Tales From The Playa are the dreams and memories of events that took place in Black Rock City, as told by participants. That’s you.
There's plenty to read about Burning Man out there, but we believe the most intimate and vivid picture comes from Burners' first-hand accounts. So send us your stories, and we'll publish them on Voices of Burning Man.
What Tales From The Playa Are — And Aren't
A tale from the playa is one on-playa experience. This can be in the form of a text, audio, photo, or video story.
A tale from the playa is not:
-
an essay about The Essence Of Burning Man
-
an "I Just Got Back From Burning Man, And Lemme Tell Ya” story
-
a travelogue of your entire week’s experience
A tale from the playa is sometimes:
-
a multi-year story, as long as it's all one story. Not if it's all of your Burning Man stories at once.
-
a poem that is also a story
Please sample the diverse tales already posted. We are interested in your unique experiences, episodes, or reflections. No need to offer general descriptions or advice about the event that have already appeared elsewhere.
We may select and edit any submission. (We do not post everything and will not post descriptions of illegal acts or false or inaccurate information.) If you make your submission as grammatically and stylistically precise as possible, that will enhance the likelihood that your exact expression will be posted as you intended.
You can follow Tales From The Playa on the blog or on Twitter at @FromThePlaya.

Fantasy World
Some of these cartoon-ified shots are amazing. Viv writes:
"It was my first Burning Man experience. I was excited and overwhelmed there. 'Fantasy World' reflects my feeling there. Thank you to everyone for such a surreal experience!"

New Year's Eve on the Playa
Always fun to see the playa in the off season. Andrew writes:
"Myself and a couple other long time Burner friends got a wild hair this year and decided to go and spend a very cold New Year's Eve on the Playa. We GPS'ed our way to the Temple site and set up for what I can only describe as a magical night as we had the entire Playa to ourselves.
Check out the photos of our camp, New Year's fireworks and of course, the de-MOOPing fun in the morning including quite a variety of screws, nails, wood and staples from the Temple. We also had a most beautiful First Playa Sunrise of 2015. The low was 6 degrees, we slept in our cars and nearly froze but oh was it so worth it! We also visited Trego Hot Springs and pulled a couple kids out of the mud who had been stuck there for 20 hours. Cheers all and Happy 2015."

Spark: Collaborate with Burners on Anything
Burners are already pretty good at doing stuff, but sometimes we need to put our heads together. That's what Spark, our online hub for listing and finding projects needing collaborators, is for.
If you need help with your project, or if you're looking for something cool to work on, go to spark.burningman.org and find your match.
Alternatively, there's a forum on ePlaya for sharing and collaborating on projects.

Are You Doing a SimulBurn? Let Us Know!
Used to be, people around the world who were unable to make it to Black Rock City would take it upon themselves to create their own mini Burning Man where they live during the main event in Nevada.
We call these SimulBurns.
People will gather friends, create art projects, devise some innovative performance, perhaps build an effigy of some sort, and burn it. Or some combination of those. Whatever it takes to bring yourself a little closer to home.
This year, we'd like to share your SimulBurns with the world. If you're planning a SimulBurn in your town, or would like to, let us know about it. We'll promote your event (if you want), and if there's critical mass, we'd even look at creating a webpage on burningman.org to host livestreams of the various burns as they happen.
If you're interested, let us know!

Burning Man Global Leadership Conference
 |
|
| |
The Burning Man GLC is an annual conference of Burning Man community leadership that happens each spring in San Francisco, and it's coming up starting April 9.
We are excited to welcome a special guest keynote speaker to this year’s Burning Man Global Leadership Conference!
Former U.S. Representative Dennis Kucinich will join us in person on Saturday, April 11 to address why Burning Man culture matters to humanity at this time of great global change.
Dennis is a statesman and philosopher who believes the fundamental truth of our existence is human unity — that we are all one, and that we are interconnected and interdependent. This belief has guided him through public life and he shares it with audiences everywhere. An internationally known environmentalist, Dennis is passionate about the great evolutionary potential which comes from repairing our relationship to the natural world and to each other.
He has had a long and distinguished career in public service, including serving as a Cleveland City Councilman, Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio State Senator, and U.S. Congressman. He was a two-time Presidential candidate.
Dennis participated in Black Rock City for the first time in 2014. Through the creativity and human connection of Black Rock City and the Burning Man Regional Network, he sees that "Burning Man represents an incandescent vision of a world within our grasp."
The conference is for organizers and community leaders in the Burning Man Regional Network (and space is limited) so attendance isn't open to the public, BUT the content will be of interest to all Burners, so for the first time we'll be livestreaming video of the keynotes and covering the conference on Voices of Burning Man. Stay tuned for that.

We were listening to ...
Miles Davis — Bitches Brew (1969), because spring is here, summer is coming, and it's starting to get weird and wiggly out there.
Dug down into the experimental electronica with Kid606, Mouse on Mars, and Plaid.
