ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Happy (calendar) new year, everybody! It's been a minute since we've popped one in your inbox, but hey, those holidays throw everybody for a loop, don't they? Ayup.
Wanted to let you know we're working on solidifying our ticket sales plan for this year, and we appreciate your patience while we sort it all out. We should have details for you in the next JRS, so stay tuned.
In the meantime, we're serving up our typical smattering of cool random stuff to tickle your Burning Man fancy, including a phototastic Moscow (yes, as in Russia) Decompression report, the kickoff of our "Art, Money and the Renaissance"
blog series, a sonically nerdtastic story about the creation of the 2013 Man Base soundscape, details about the upcoming Vienna Burning Ball, and some cool opportunities to participate. Enjoy!
(We may have coined the word "phototastic", and we're cool with that.)
The Man burns in 232 days.

Kiwiburn Tickets Sold Out for the First Time
We are thrilled! Zaryd Wilson writes:
"Kiwiburn has sold out for the first time.
Held on a farm near Hunterville, the event is based on Black Rock City which is built each year in Nevada. The annual New Zealand version is now in its 13th year and its third in Rangitikei after moving from Waikato.
The paddocks turn into a mini town for five days where this year 1200 'burners' (festivalgoers) will gather for the event based on sharing. No money changes hands during the festival and 'burners' bring everything they need for the five days with them. It encourages 'radical self-reliance and participation'."

Art, Money, and the Renaissance: Re-Imagining the Relationship
We've formally kicked off our blog series on the relationship between art and money over on the Burning Man Journal. It's a philosophical exploration of the 2016 art theme, da Vinci's Workshop. Caveat's written the introduction (and there's a trippy video version to match):
"As Black Rock City gets bigger, its art has gotten grander — and correspondingly more expensive. To be sure, it is still possible to have profoundly affecting art projects done on a small scale and without permission, but Burning Man has become increasingly associated with the kind of scale and spectacle that requires either a massive crowd-funding campaign or a very wealthy patron.
This is an uncomfortable tension, and maybe unsustainable. It’s also hard to talk about."

Moscow Through the Blinky Lights of Radical Self-Expression
Anna Skaya writes:
"Moscow Decompression, in its third year and already a tradition with its own set of traditions (Greeters in fur coats!), has just wrapped up, and it couldn’t have been more grand.
Everything is a bit bigger in Russia, and Decompression here is no different. More than 2,600 people, bands, DJs, artists, performers, organizers and volunteers descended on an old silk factory in central Moscow. Over 50 art installations made the space look like a Burner museum. Secret rooms, tea ceremonies, aerial silks, butoh-inspired theater, cabaret, air circus and even glow-in-the-dark capoeira performers entertained all night."

Creating the 2013 Man Base Soundscape
Gogo, longtime member of the Man Base sound team, writes:
"It was back in January 2013 when I got a message from my dear friend Spanky that made me jump through the ceiling. Obviously there was a meeting at Burning Man Headquarters where the UFO that should become 2013’s Man Base was presented, and obviously Spanky raised his hand at one point and said 'It should have sound!', and obviously the answer he got was 'Yes, and you are in charge of it!' That was the beginning of an undertaking that was challenging and crazy and the most ambitious project I ever realized for Burning Man."

Tough break on the drone permit, George, but you did an amazing job working around it! George writes:
"This year I was not granted a permit to fly my drone on playa. It ruined many of my plans that had been worked on for months. I was determined not to let that stop me from making a video from a perspective that has never been seen before.
I am handicapped and decided to make my handicap vehicle an 18-foot-tall ring toss bottle game art car. I strapped my drone (sans the propellers) 12 feet up above the ground. Then I drove around the playa filming the beauty that we all flock to the desert to experience. I am finally happy with my work from this year's Burn. It has taken a while to make this good enough to satisfy me, but I love what I have created. I hope you love it too.

Special thanks to NVO for letting me use their latest release "Reforestation" in this short film. Check them out at NVOmusic.com"

Vienna Burning Ball 2016: "Orient Express"
Gogo writes:
"The 3rd Vienna Burning Ball will happen on 23th of January 2016 at Weberknecht in Vienna. This year’s art theme is “Orient Express”. Founded in 1883, this train connected London, Paris, Munich, Vienna, Belgrade and Istanbul, allowing speedy and safe long-distance travel through Europe and beyond.
In a time when social differences are being reinforced and national borders reinstated, we want to celebrate Radical Inclusion, Radical Self-expression and Gifting as key elements of our Burner culture.
You are invited in all your diversity! Oriental, Balkan Beats, Vienna World Fair, Munich Beer, Fin de Siècle Paris, Steampunk Elizabethan London — make the train your stage. Workshops will be starting Saturday in the afternoon, the ball is Saturday night, and there will be a cosy afterhour party on Sunday.
On our website, you can get your ticket, sign up as volunteer, announce your art project or performance, and get your art grant."
