ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

OK OK OK you've been super patient and we really appreciate it. We promised you ticket information, and it took a little longer than expected to get all the ducks in a row (goddamn ducks!) and pointing in the same direction, but now NOW NOW we have — hot off the presses — your Burning Man 2016 ticket information.
Phew.
Now that that's out of the way, can we talk about art? Great. We've got a particularly artsy-fartsy edition of the JRS in store for you this time around, with the Life Cube in Yerington, Penny the Goose in Lake County, Reach Again in Alaska, and a particularly powerful story (Seife) about a particular soapy art project on playa.
And that's just the beginning ... there's also a profile of the indominable Maria Patridge, and rethinking the relationship between art and money, and a cool movie about Preconceived Notions and and ... oh jeez, just read the damn thing, wouldja?
We love you guys. Hope your winter is going swimmingly. And again, thanks for your patience.
The Man burns in 213 days.

Penny the Goose Lands in Fire-Ravaged California County
 |
|
| |
Kik and Mrs. Ferguson write:
"Penny the Goose has a new home! The Burning Man Arts Honorarium project is now displayed in Lucerne, California, part of Lake County which had devastating fires in September of last year. The so called Valley and Rocky fires ravaged 76,000 acres, destroyed over 1,260 properties and left some 3,000 people homeless.
One of the victims was Hilltop Recovery Services, a drug and alcohol treatment facility which burned to its foundations. After finding a temporary home for the facility, its director, Dr Robert Gardner, asked the artists, Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson, if Penny could be brought to the community for a four month stay. The piece was installed on December 30 with county officials and townspeople on hand to watch as she was placed in her new surroundings off the playa. It is hoped that Penny will represent a symbol of hope and rebirth for the community.
For more info about Penny the Goose and photos please visit us on Facebook.
You can see photos of Penny the Goose being installed in Lake County along with photos from Burning Man in our Dropbox gallery.
An article about the piece was published in the Lake County Record Bee."

Life Cube in Yerington, NV
|
 |
| |
Skeeter writes:
"Late last year, the Mason Valley Boys & Girls Club contacted skeeter, the Life Cube Project artist, to see if he would consider creating a Cube for their community in Yerington, Nevada. The Life Cube was inspired by skeeter’s first trip to Burning Man over ten years ago. The project has grown significantly from its humble origins an 8x8’ box at Burning Man in 2011, to larger installations, both in Black Rock City and in the default world, with a mission to merge art and community.
The Life Cube in Yerington is covered with canvas squares painted by students from nine schools in Lyon County, and over 3,000 colorful ‘Wish-Tags’ hanging and shimmering on the frame. While it would be fun to burn, this Cube is made of metal, glass, canvas, and wood and can be used for future installations. The glass panels are etched with sacred geometry designed by Caitlyn Saville of Las Vegas. Volunteers from Reno, Tahoe, and the Yerington community helped build this Cube.
For more info and photos, check out the Life Cube’s Facebook page or visit the website."

Reach Again: Burning Baskets Rebounds After Vandalism
Great read from the Burning Man Arts team. Peter Bejger writes:
"Last September somebody in Homer wreaked havoc on the latest project 'Reach: A Basket of Remembrance and Unburdening.' This troubled soul tried to destroy the basket on two occasions before the community ceremony, once by shooting flares into it and setting it on fire. A passing bystander extinguished the fire and the basket was repaired. The determined vandal returned the next day with a truck and towline to pull the basket off its base. He dragged it away and flung it into a gully, and sped off into the foggy darkness just a few hours before the final day activities were to begin."

Seife: a Story of Redemption and Soap
New Journal writer Alessandra "Lotus" Wollner has published her first piece, and it's the kind of bold, personal thing a weird day on the playa is bound to wrench from the heart of the right person. She writes:
"This story was bossy; it had demands. It insisted on some cutty Word formatting, the scavenging images, the downloading of fonts, and the invention of dialect. It even necessitated the carving of soap. In short, this story made me get wild.
And that was perfect. Because what we do out there on that alkaline dustscape is wild. What we feel out there is very, very wild."

Temple Stories
Our partners at Artichoke Trust compiled this participant-made documentary at last year's Temple build in Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland. They write:
"As part of the 'Temple' project, Artichoke gave 20 participants video cameras and asked them to record their experiences. The resulting film documents their personal responses as they worked together on a monumental build."

Preconceived Notions: a Burning Man Narrative Film
Raymond Daigle writes:
"Preconceived Notions is a narrative, scripted, conversational film, shot in 2013 at Burning Man. It tells the story of a couple negotiating a life-changing decision, and is set against a stunningly rich and varied visual canvas.
This project came about because we saw a gap in the way Burning Man has been depicted in film. We didn't want to make another documentary or hedonistic travelogue. There are many of those. Instead, we wanted to show how this week-long art experience in the remote desert can serve as a catalyst for deep interpersonal communication and growth."

"Playa Lung" Research Survey
Are Burners taking proper precautions to protect themselves from any unknown effects of inhaling playa dust? That is the question a research team of physicians affiliated with the University of California San Francisco is hoping to answer.
The phenomenon colloquially dubbed “playa lung" is going under the microscope, and you are invited to participate. If you have experienced respiratory breathing problems either during or immediately after being in the Black Rock Desert, please consider taking this five-minute, anonymous survey:
Take the survey here
The researchers have particular clinical training and expertise in wilderness medicine, and they are looking to understand "playa lung" symptoms, time-course, and risk factors. Results of this study could lead to improved health and safety recommendations for all future Burners, including you! While Burning Man is not affiliated with this study, we are happy to share this information with the community.
All surveys will remain anonymous and no one will be able to link your answers back to you.

Burners: a Book of Portraits
Nicholas King writes:
"This campaign is designed to raise funds for the creation, printing and distribution of a book of portraits of Burners all made at Center Camp.
The book is dedicated to my late wife and all who come to Burning Man for whatever reason — many of which the book will reveal visually and in words. I am planning for seven divisions of photographs: Adventure, Creativity, Community, Discovery, Play, Sensuality & Sexuality, and Spirituality with essays and comments from Burners appropriate to each section."

Help Burners Build Shelters for Refugees
 |
|
| |
Nancy writes:
"Can you help support a camp building shelters for refugees and migrants fleeing violence in countries such as Syria, Eritrea, Somalia and Afghanistan?
Ubertown, the biggest camp at Nowhere (the European regional event), is returning to one of the biggest refugee camps in Europe, Calais. They're using the skills they learned building camp kitchens, geodomes and solar showers to change the lives of more than 1,600 people who have lost everything — and all while suffering through one of the worst winters on record.
Shelters have been built, families relocated and infrastructure overhauled, but it's not close to enough. And worst of all, the workshop has been burgled, meaning thousands of pounds of new tools were lost. Without tools, there can be no building.
We're calling on the global Burning Man community to help Ubertown continue this invaluable, life-changing work. The team returns to Calais later this month, and badly need donations."

Fuego Austral, Argentina's First Regional Burn
|
 |
| |
Martin Marquez writes:
"We invite you to Fuego Austral, the first official regional event in Latin America, which will take place in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 23rd to 27th of March 2016.
In the spirit of co-creation, our community decided the subject of this year’s event will be 'INFINISIS'. This is a nonexistent word in the dictionary, but exists in its parts as 'a state or condition of infinity'. INFINISIS adapts and transforms with your participation and experience. We invite you to make art and perform in the great canvas of the Argentinian pampa!
You can find information at www.fuegoaustral.org in Spanish and other languages using the translate program there. There you will find basic info about the event, the survival guide, and registration forms to participate. We invite you to follow us on Facebook, Instagram
and Twitter.

"The Light Chimes" Comes to Reno’s Wingfield Park
 |
|
| |
Nevada artist Scott Morgan (who has worked on a number of Burning Man art installations) unveiled his installation, The Light Chimes, at Reno's Wingfield Park Amphitheater on December 29. From the reno.gov press release:
"'Arts and culture are important aspects of our community,' says Naomi Duerr, Reno City Council Member and liaison to the Reno Arts & Culture Commission. 'We’re excited to be showcasing local talent, and we encourage the whole community to come out and enjoy this spectacular piece of public art.'
The installation is sponsored by the City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission, and the sculpture will remain on display at Wingfield Park through March 2016. 'The Light Chimes' will illuminate Wingfield Park nightly from 4 to 10 p.m. with animated color palettes derived from Reno street murals, the artist's own work, and time lapses of the Milky Way. The color animations depict wind blowing through 'The Light Chimes.'
“The Light Chimes” is free and open to the public. For more information, visit thelightchimes.com."

6th Annual Burner Day at Disneyland
Good luck with the "family-friendly playa wear" part. Salohcin writes:
"Haven't seen LED-covered art cars in a while? Finally got the dust out of that fur vest and need a place to wear it? Six months post-playa, and the default world's got you down?
Let’s break those Burnal Equinox blues with a day in a place with its own magic: Disneyland.
We’ll meet for a picture at the castle then decide which adventures we want to experience together.
Family-friendly playa wear encouraged.
Sunday, March 6 at 11:11 AM
